23 Jun 2022

From the Principal – Ms Gilda Pussich

Refugee Week

This week, 19 June – 25 June is Refugee Week.

The 2022 Theme is Healing.

During this week, we pray, and where possible take action, to heal the wounds of loss, displacement, war and separation that refugees endure. We hope that all Australians show them compassion, understanding and hospitality.

Almighty and merciful God,
whose Son became a refugee and had no place to call his own;
look with mercy on those who today are fleeing from danger, are homeless and hungry.

Bless those who work to bring them relief;
inspire generosity and compassion in all our hearts;
and guide the nations of the world towards that day when all will rejoice in your Kingdom of justice and of peace;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week

On 26 May, our school acknowledged National Sorry Day, which marks the beginning of Reconciliation Week. On this day we acknowledged the past wrongdoings inflicted on Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people, including the Stolen Generation. We also apologised for the removal of indigenous children from their families and for the laws that caused the breaking up of families. As part of Sorry Day, we acknowledged a commitment to ensure these injustices are not repeated and the culture of our Indigenous people is celebrated and preserved. During Reconciliation Week, we began every morning with an Acknowledgement of Country, followed by prayer.

Mary MacKillop Catholic College, in keeping with the spirit and rich vision of the Sisters of St Joseph,
acknowledges the living culture of the Cabrogal-Gandangarran people,
the traditional custodians of this land on which this College stands.
Respect is also paid to the Elders both present and past of the Darug nation.
We also play tribute to the unique role all our cultures play in the life of this community.

The Order of Australia Association (NSW) Youth Community Service Award for 2022

We are extremely proud of Year 11 student, Kardina Batti who is a recipient of the Youth Community Service Award. The Youth Community Service Award is conducted annually by the NSW Branch of the Order of Australia Association and nominations for the Award are sought from 1,017 Secondary School Principals. Principals can only nominate one senior student (Year 11 or 12). Nominations are considered by a judging panel of three Order of Australia Award recipients to select the 25 Awardees for each year.

This Award recognises the significant service performed by students beyond their school boundaries in the wider community, which may be local, state, national or international.  The Award was initiated in 1992 by Dr John Lincoln AM and has been offered every year since 1993 (except 2020).

We congratulate Kardina who has been selected for her outstanding demonstrated contribution and leadership in community service.  Congratulations on your selfless service, which is recognised by this Award.

Kardina will receive her Award at a ceremony on Friday 2 September, 2022, at NSW Government House. The Award will be personally presented by the Lieutenant Governor of NSW, The Honourable Andrew Bell, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of NSW.

Upcoming Events

Stop Work Industrial Action

You may have heard in the media of the strike action on Thursday 30 June. We will inform you about the impact on MMCC families in a letter.

HSC Trial Examination Preparation

Year 12 students are encouraged to take up the many opportunities to support them with the upcoming HSC Trial Examinations. These include attending the MMCC Holiday Masterclasses, attending/viewing the SCS Masterclasses, joining with their parent(s) the Year 12 Term 3 Information Zoom scheduled for Tuesday 19 July and utilising the extended IMC twilight hours during Term 3 Weeks 1 and 2.

Our students should view these school holidays as a time for intense study and rest. Parents are asked to support their daughter by encouraging and motivating her to study, providing her with space appropriate for study and minimising any distractions so that she remains focused on her studies. There will be plenty of time for fun with friends and family after the HSC Examination Block which is less than 5 months away.

Year 7 – 10 Parent-Teacher-Student Interview

Year 7-10 College Semester 1 Reports will be distributed via Compass at the end of this term. We look forward to meeting with parents/carers at Parent-Teacher-Student Interviews to discuss your daughter’s progress and strategies for improvement. Interviews will be held in the College Hall on Thursday 21 July 3.30-7.30pm and Friday 22 July 8.45am-1.30pm. Students are expected to attend with their Parent(s) and in College Winter Uniform. To accommodate the interviews, classes will not be held on Friday 22 July.

Year 10 Senior Study Transition Interviews

Year 10 students are currently making significant decisions for their senior study years following extensive information sessions, course information and careers counselling. We hope students heed the advice which is based on substantial performance data as well as their attendance rate and their demonstrated attitude towards learning.

We look forward to meeting with parents/carers at the Senior Study Transition Interviews to be held at the College on Thursday 21 July 3.30-7.30pm and Friday 22 July 8.45am-1.30pm. Students are expected to attend with their Parent(s) and in College Winter Uniform.

Enrolling Now – Year 7 2024

From the Assistant Principal – Mrs Christine Harding

Term 2 has progressed very quickly and our students have been working well in the classroom and focused on their learning.

HSC Holiday Masterclasses

I am constantly inspired by the time and effort teachers put into ensuring that our girls are learning and given many opportunities to achieve HSC success.  The dedicated staff at the College are committed to offering our senior students every opportunity to succeed. Winter Uniform Reminder

We commend our many students who wear their uniforms correctly with pride every day. I would like to take this opportunity to remind our community of the College’s expectations in relation to the uniform.

The winter uniform expectations are:

  • All students must wear the College Blazer to and from school. The blazer is the outer garment.
  • Any clothing worn under the College shirt must not be seen.  All undergarments should be neutral in colour.
  • The College Jumper is not part of the Sports Uniform.
  • Due to WHS requirements, hair needs to be tied up.
  • College skirt is to be worn at the knee (not rolled at the waist).

Mobile Phone Policy Reminder

I would like to take this opportunity to remind our community of the College’s expectations in relation to student use of mobile phones at school.

The purpose of the Mobile Phone Policy is to ensure the safety of students, promote appropriate and safe use of mobile phones within College grounds, and encourage interaction and communication without distractions.

Below are the key elements of the policy:

  • All mobile phones are to be out of sight (stored in the student’s locker), switched off or on silent (not vibrate) as soon as the student enters the College front doors of a morning.
  • Mobile phones can only be used on College grounds once students have been dismissed out of their classroom by their teacher after the end-of–school-day bell rings.
  • If a mobile phone is sighted on school grounds from the moment the student walks into the College front doors, for any reason, they will have it confiscated immediately by staff.
  • Refusal to give a confiscated phone to a staff member will automatically result in a Thursday Afternoon RAP detention.
  • Continued abuse of this policy may result in further consequences.
  • The school accepts no responsibility for replacing mobile phones that are lost, stolen or damaged whilst on school premises.
  • If students need to contact their parents/carers they are to go to Student Services and request to use a phone.
  • If parents/carers need to contact their daughters they can call the College reception on 9725-4322 and a message will be passed on to their daughter.

We appreciate the support of parents in having their daughter’s adhere to this policy and ask that you please do not text or call your daughter throughout the day.

Thank you for your continued support of the College,

Mrs Christine Harding

Around the Grounds

Year 11 Drama Performance ‘Ruby Moon’

During the recent McCormack Assembly, two Year 11 Drama students, Merry Shamoon and Menalys Aguilar-Garcia, performed a small section of their recent Drama assessment for the students.
It was a duologue performance based on the Australian Absurdist play, ‘Ruby Moon’ by Matt Cameron. It tells the story of a young girl who goes missing and the parents interview their neighbours to find out what they saw on that dreaded day. All Drama students were introduced to this new theatre style and had to employ Absurdist conventions and Drama Elements to create a performance which captured the audience’s attention, developed unique and engaging characters and highlighted key themes of grief, loss and appearance vs reality.
The performance during assembly was a great success with the girls giving their peers an insight into the work they create within the Drama classroom. Both students mentioned how happy they were that they presented this in front of such a large group as it helped them to develop their confidence, prepare for future HSC performance assessment tasks and feel proud of what they had accomplished.

SCS Dance Eisteddfod ( Years 9-11)

Join us in congratulating our 12 Senior Jazz and Hip Hop students who participated in the Sydney Catholic Schools Dance Eisteddfod at Burwood. We are so proud of the achievements of these two groups as they worked hard as a tight group and devoted many lunch hours to dance practice. The students were also involved in a Dance Gala day along with a Junior Jazz and Samoan Cultural group where they competed against 7 other Sydney Catholic Schools.

Year 12 Hospitality Lunch

Year 12 Hospitality students prepared and cooked a 3 course meal for their teachers as part of their final assessment. Students greeted our guests and showed them to their tables, which were beautiful set. The food was delicious.

The students did an amazing job and the teachers were thoroughly impressed. Well done year 12 Hospitality!

IMC Library

Term 2 has been a busy time filled with many great activities and opportunities for the students at MMCC. Here are a few of the activities and updates that have occurred in the IMC this term…

Stage 6 Research Lessons

As our Year 11 students become more accustomed to the rigours of study in Stage 6, it is important to assist them in developing the skills required to effectively research and evaluate sources of information. This is particularly vital for students studying Society and Culture, Ancient History, and Community and Family Studies as they undertake assessment tasks such as research projects or literature reviews. The IMC provides tutorials which are designed to assist students in refining their research skills so they can confidently navigate the overwhelming amount of information that can be found online. During the tutorial, students are also shown how to evaluate sources to ensure reliability and authenticity as well as being given the opportunity to join the State Library of NSW to enable them to broaden their search through accessing international databases.

Readers’ Club

There is so much fun to be had at our weekly Readers’ Club. Each Friday, Miss Krahe develops a book related activity for the students to share and enjoy. Some of the activities this term have been Book Pictionary, Glitter Bookmark Making and a Book Taster event where students sit in a restaurant-like setting and enjoy “sampling” a range of titles from the menu provided. Each week more and more students join in the fun of Readers’ Club. All students are welcome and all you have to do is turn up to the IMC at lunchtime on Fridays.

Updated Online Catalogue (OLIVER)

Our library technicians, Mrs Muttoo and Miss Krahe have been hard at work to refine the IMC Library catalogue to make it more user friendly for our students to access the information needed regarding the availability of our library resources. The new and improved catalogue will be officially launched next term and we will also be establishing a dedicated cataloguing computer in the IMC to enable students to develop their independent search skills.

Reconciliation Week

Reconciliation Week is always a great opportunity to provide our students with an understanding of the shared histories, cultures and achievements of Indigenous Australians.

The slogan ‘Be Brave, Make Change’ highlights the need for a collaborative approach to reconciliation.

In the IMC, the works of indigenous writers were displayed for students to explore and enable the conversations regarding reconciliation to begin.

Jigsaw Puzzles

The Creation Zone in the IMC has been set up with a jigsaw puzzle space for the students. It has been documented that jigsaw puzzles:

  • improve short term memory
  • improve visual-spatial reasoning
  • help to alleviate stress

Many of our students have taken the opportunity to spend some time working on the puzzle at recess and lunch. This quiet time has proven to be a very calming activity which helps to recharge the girls for their next lessons.

The first completed puzzle!

New Books

We have had lots of new titles delivered to the IMC this term and here is one of the latest additions to the collection:

Witches only exist in stories.

Everyone knows that. But what if the stories are real?

FOUR FRIENDS. FOUR TRUTHS. ONE NIGHTMARE.

If you wander into the wood …

If you hear scratching sounds from the Old Quarry …

If you go too close to the edge …

WATCH. OUT.

A delightfully creepy horror story written by Mike Lucas for lower to middle secondary readers. This is a suspense-filled story that will enthral young readers who are interested in horror but are not quite ready for the likes of Stephen King.
