From the Principal – Ms Gilda Pussich

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

The publican returned to his home justified; the pharisee did not.

Jesus spoke the following parable to some people who prided themselves on being virtuous and despised everyone else,
‘Two men went up to the Temple to pray, one a Pharisee, the other a tax collector.
The Pharisee stood there and said this prayer to himself,
“I thank you, God, that I am not grasping, unjust, adulterous like the rest of mankind,
and particularly that I am not like this tax collector here.
I fast twice a week; I pay tithes on all I get.”
The tax collector stood some distance away, not daring even to raise his eyes to heaven;
but he beat his breast and said, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.”
This man, I tell you, went home again at rights with God; the other did not.
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the man who humbles himself will be exalted.’
Luke 18:9-14

Are you Pharisee or the tax collector? Jesus tell us to be humble and not to be self-righteous and judge others.

Changes to self-isolation rules:

  • From 14 October 2022, it is no longer mandatory to self-isolate at home if you test test positive for COVID-19.
  • NSW Health strongly recommends people who are sick or have tested positive to COVID-19 stay home until their symptoms have gone.
  • Some restrictions will still apply for high-risk settings such as healthcare and aged care facilities.

From NSW Govt https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19

MMCC COVID isolation rules continue to align with the NSW Government and are as per the following:
  • If your daughter tests positive for Covid there is no requirement for her to isolate.
  • If she tests positive and is sick then she should remain at home until symptoms have gone.
  • Parents please enter the illness in Compass and upload documentation as per any other illness. The evidence could be a doctor’s certificate or a letter provided by NSW Health if you register your daughter’s positive test.

Year 12 2023

Year 12 (2023) students commence their HSC courses this term.

Year 12 (2023) students will have the opportunity to engage in study and major work projects during On Target each Thursday afternoon. In the first On Target session in Week 1, students were given a booklet from NESA detailing the 2023 HSC Rules and Procedures. Parents are encouraged to read through this booklet with their daughter.

In this session, I spoke to Year 12 students about the benefit of making small changes to their study habits and routines, that can make significant changes in their overall results and learning outcomes. This is a concept known as aggregation of marginal gains (Clear, 2018). Building into a routine, small adjustments that become habits over time, can greatly assist in reaching learning goals. This is an approach that can be adopted by all students as they take board feedback as part of their learning, and as they engage in completing classwork, homework and study.

Year 10 Camp

In Week 1, Year 10 students attended the Collaroy Conference Centre to participate in their Camp. Delayed from last year due to the restrictions from COVID-19, students were able to take the opportunity to participate and challenge themselves in a range of activities. I had the privilege of joining the Year 10 students and staff on Thursday evening and was delighted to see them so well engaged in all the Camp had to offer.

Catholic Life @ MMCC – Praying the Rosary

October – The Month of the Rosary

The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary.

On 7th October, the Church celebrated the feast day of Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary. The feast day was established by Pope Saint Pius V on the anniversary of the victory at Lepanto on 7th October, 1571. The naval victory was attributed to the Virgin Mary whose intercession was entreated through the recitation of the Holy Rosary.

The Church then proceeded to dedicate the entire month of October to the Holy Rosary so that individuals, families, and communities would pray the Holy Rosary, if possible, on a daily basis for peace in the world. “Not only do we earnestly exhort all Christians to give themselves to the recital of the pious devotion of the Rosary publicly, or privately in their own house and family, and that unceasingly, but we also desire that the whole of the month of October (in this year) should be consecrated to the Holy Queen of the Rosary” (Pope Leo XII; On Devotion of the Rosary, September 1, 1883). https://stjosemaria.org/october-month-of-the-holy-rosary/

No form of extra-liturgical devotion to Mary is more widely practised among the faithful or found by them to be more satisfyingly complete than the Rosary, which has come to be regarded as the very badge of Catholic piety. The authentic Rosary is a happy combination of vocal and mental prayer, each of which is essential to the devotion. It is incorrect to say that meditation is “the very essence of the Rosary devotion”, for vocal recitation of the prayers is also of the essence.

Rosary – Praying Daily

Ways to integrate the Rosary into your daily life during the month of October:

# 1: Say one Hail Mary every day.

# 2: Say one Hail Mary a few times a day (every time you eat is a good reminder).

# 3: Say one decade every day.

# 4: Say the one decade at different times during the day (work your way up to five).

# 5: Say an entire Rosary a few times a week.

# 6: Say the entire Rosary every day. Pray the Rosary Online (Text)

# 7: Going for a walk while you do the Rosary

#8: Find a prayer partner or group who could say it with you.

#9: Listening to the Rosary – The Rosary Online

Rosary for the Family

The Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network and the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life have collaborated to create the “Rosary for the Family” to help families to pray and to pray as a family. Praying the Holy Rosary is a special time to share with family members and other families. In the year of St. Joseph, praying the Rosary as a family was also a concrete way of obtaining a plenary indulgence. In any case, “prayer can do immense good for our families”. (AL 318). “Rosary for the Family” is intended for the spread of Mary’s love throughout the world and is a resource made available in this special year dedicated to the Family, to help families enter into the mysteries and meditations of the Holy Rosary.

Senior Retreat

“Remember, we are all but travellers here”

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop

The Senior Retreat for Year 11 students was held during Week 2 at Vision Valley. During the Senior Retreat students embarked on a journey to seek God and explore their faith life. Following in the footsteps of Mary MacKillop, students took part in faith discussions, prayer, discernment, nature walks and enjoying time with friends.

Staff led students in reviewing what brings them joy, the anchors in life and understanding God’s call to live life to the full. We concluded the retreat with the Eucharist, celebrated by Fr Ben Gandy from Our Lady of the Rosary Fairfield.

Year 10 Camp – The Collaroy Centre

The Year 10 camp was an exhilarating experience filled with a variety of activities that left us all with fond memories. When we arrived, the Collaroy Centre greeted us with morning tea and a quick run down of our itinerary. We then continued with an assortment of challenges that confronted our fear of heights such as abseiling and giant swing. We worked on our team building skills through communication and amplified the skill of being resilient.

Resilient to pick ourselves up every time something did not work out or we thought we “couldn’t do it”. Not to mention the beach hike, that was an afternoon happily spent in the sun. With 6 meals a day, we were definitely well fed and looked after. Filled with constant reassurance from our friends, Year 10 camp was an experience full of support and encouragement. In particular our teachers who were there every step of the way, watching us complete activities and having a laugh with us.

We would like to thank them, especially, Ms Gagliano and Mr McLean, for dedicating their time to accompany us and organising a trip with memories that will last a lifetime.

Book Week Winners

At the end of last term, an award ceremony was held in the IMC to recognise the Book Week competition winners. Students were given book vouchers and gift packs to acknowledge their wonderful efforts. It was great to see so many students take part in our Book Week activities this year and we look forward to celebrating again in 2023.

Year 9 – Mystery Cubes

During their Wide Reading lessons, Year 9 English classes had fun collaborating with their peers on the development of a mystery story. Students were able to apply knowledge gained from their study of the genre and include a variety of mystery text conventions. This helped them to not only establish their own story but also help develop the stories of their peers. The results were incredibly creative and there are some wonderful examples on display in the IMC.

Pens Against Poverty Writing Competition

Pens Against Poverty is a national writing competition which aims to raise awareness of social justice issues through creative writing. The theme of the competition this year was Finding a Home’ and students could enter a short story or poem. Judges of the competition include well known published authors and poets such as Jackie French, Ursula Dubosarsky and John Foulcher.

To coincide with their study of Inequality, Year 8 English students were encouraged to enter this competition. A writing workshop was provided in their wide reading lessons to encourage their creative expression on the topic.

Best wishes to the following students who entered:

School of Rock the Musical

On Wednesday 13th October, Year 7 along with 10 Dance, 10 Drama, 10 Photography and 9 Music ventured to Qudos Bank Arena to watch the Sydney Catholic Schools production of ‘School of Rock’ the musical. It is the first time Sydney Catholic Schools has developed such a large scale, arena filled production and we were able to view this musical in all its glory from high up in the bleachers, looking down on all of the action.

For many students this was their first time attending a theatre performance. It is wonderful that we are able to provide students with opportunities to step out of their comfort zones and experience something new. This excursion allowed students to be immersed in an environment which highlighted and exposed them to the wonder of performing arts.

After the show, many students commented on how exciting it was being in such a large space with many other schools, that the large scale production was very impressive and engaging and that they would be interested in participating in something like this in the future.

Overall, it was a wonderful day out for both staff and students.
