On Tuesday 4 August, Year 9 Commerce students enjoyed an engaging and educational excursion to the Police and Justice Museum and NSW Parliament, bringing their classroom learning on law, society and political involvement to life through authentic, real world experiences.<\/p>\n

At the historic Police and Justice Museum<\/em> in Circular Quay, students explored the origins and development of New South Wales\u2019 policing and justice system. They examined significant historical court cases, gaining insight into how the legal system has evolved over time and the role it continues to play in maintaining a fair and just society. A highlight of the visit was participating in a mock trial within one of the museum\u2019s original courtrooms, where students experienced the legal process firsthand by taking on courtroom roles.<\/p>\n

The learning continued at NSW Parliament, where students discovered how government is formed, how Members of Parliament are elected, and how Australia\u2019s bicameral Westminster system operates. Students also had the opportunity to observe Question Time from the public gallery, providing a valuable insight into parliamentary debate, accountability, and the rules that govern proceedings.<\/p>\n

A particular highlight of the day was meeting Jason Yat-Sen Li, who spoke with students about the role of a local Member of Parliament and encouraged them to think critically about the issues that matter most to young people. Students shared their perspectives on topics they believe should be considered in the lead up to the next state election, demonstrating thoughtful civic engagement and an increasing understanding of active citizenship.<\/p>\n

The excursion provided students with a meaningful opportunity to connect their Commerce studies with the institutions that shape Australian society, inspiring them to become informed, responsible and engaged members of their communities.<\/p>\n
