{"id":46056,"date":"2026-06-19T14:42:37","date_gmt":"2026-06-19T04:42:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebuzz.net.au\/mlc\/?post_type=article&#038;p=46056"},"modified":"2026-06-19T14:42:37","modified_gmt":"2026-06-19T04:42:37","slug":"year-10-subject-selection-considerations-for-future-university-study","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.thebuzz.net.au\/mlc\/article\/year-10-subject-selection-considerations-for-future-university-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Year 10 subject selection &#8211; Considerations for future university study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">To support you in making informed subject selection decisions, we have linked below a recording of the presentation from earlier this term by Head of Futures and Pathways, <strong>Jo Cilia.<\/strong> We have also included a digital version copy of the Year 10 Handbook handed out at subject selection evening.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"btn btn-primary\" href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/mlcschoolsydney\/docs\/year-10-booklet-2029\">Year 10 Handbook\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The presentation highlights key considerations when choosing your subjects, including:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li><strong>University and course entry requirements,<\/strong>\u00a0such as prerequisites, assumed knowledge and recommended studies e.g. degrees in Engineering, Advanced Computing and Pharmacy often require Mathematics Advanced (or an equivalent level).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Specific course requirements<\/strong>, ANU has several courses with prerequisites, also ACU Allied Health degrees require at least one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interstate requirements <\/strong>can be more complex and often have stricter subject admission requirements.\u00a0For instance, some Medicine courses in Victoria and Queensland require Chemistry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a class=\"btn btn-primary\" href=\"https:\/\/aus01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fvimeo.com%2F1200311056%2F8f2b1c317c%3Fshare%3Dcopy%26fl%3Dsv%26fe%3Dci&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ceditor%40mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au%7C987b09a047ce47b5972108decceeb687%7C297d50d8e5fd4f0b837b06f6611d7cf1%7C0%7C0%7C639173522791007454%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=U%2Bs1FN2p7Oatg%2BC1RpCdijDz3BfSjvtX9NuH%2FNNZyGU%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">View presentation recording here<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The key message is that students should<strong>\u00a0carefully research the requirements<\/strong>\u00a0for their intended courses before finalising subject choices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The presentation also explains Selection Rank, Adjustment Factors and Subject Bonus Points (adjustment factors).\u00a0Many universities <strong>award additional points for strong performance<\/strong>\u00a0in subjects relevant to a chosen degree. These are typically applied automatically through UAC where applicable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another important consideration is that <strong>many Early Entry applications in Year 12 are based on Year 11 results<\/strong>, meaning your subject choices can impact outcomes sooner than expected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">We encourage students to choose subjects that:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li>genuinely interest them<\/li>\n<li>are manageable based on their ability<\/li>\n<li>allow them to achieve consistent results<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can view these resources on the Year 10 Page on <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/omnia.mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au\/school-information\/senior-school\/year-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Omnia<\/a>,<\/strong><\/em> or using the links provided above.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are here to assist you while Jo Cilia is away.
