Among the many values that help us navigate this journey, courage stands out as an essential quality for both students and educators. Courage is not just about facing fears; it is about stepping out of comfort zones, embracing change, and striving to become the best version of ourselves.

Courage can be defined as the ability to do something that frightens one or to persevere in the face of adversity. It is not the absence of fear, but the decision to act despite it. In the school environment, courage manifests in many forms, from trying out for a new sport or club, to asking questions in class, to standing up for what is right.

Why is courage important?

Facing New Challenges: Each school year brings new grades, teachers, classmates and new spaces. Courage helps students adapt to these changes and overcome the anxiety that often comes with the unknown.

Building Confidence: When students act courageously – by speaking up, participating, or making new friends – they build self-confidence and learn valuable life skills.

Promoting Growth: Mistakes and setbacks are part of learning. Courage enables students to learn from errors rather than be discouraged by them, fostering resilience and a growth mindset.

Supporting Others: Courage is also about helping classmates who may be struggling or standing up against mean on purpose behaviours. It contributes to a safer, more inclusive school environment.

As we embark on a new school year, let’s make courage a guiding value in our learning and interactions. By embracing courage, we open ourselves up to new experiences, overcome challenges, and support one another in our shared journey. Every act of courage – big or small – makes a difference and sets the tone for a rewarding and successful year ahead.

– Joanne Sharpe
Deputy Head of Senior School – Wellbeing

Courage – A School Value The start of a new school year marks a fresh chapter filled with possibilities, challenges, and the promise of growth.
