From the Principal

Today, MLC School staff and students paused to remember all the courageous men and women who have served Australia. We particularly reflected on the contribution of the MLC School Old Girls who served: 11 in WWI and 60 in WWII, plus the countless other Old Girls whose service at home supported the efforts of those overseas.

Our Old Girls served as nurses during World War I as nursing was the only service role available for Australian women at that time. It was not until World War II that women were asked to serve in non-nursing roles.

The lives of Australian women changed dramatically between 1940 and 1945 when young women were compelled to participate in the WWII war effort, particularly in the armed services. Women were employed in the armed services so that servicemen in non-combatant roles could be released to combat units.

Recruitment posters encouraged young women to join up and more than 66,000 of them enlisted, about 7% of the nearly one million Australians who served.

Thousands of young Australian women left home to join the new women’s auxiliary services: the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF), the Women’s Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS) and the Australian Women’s Army Service (AWAS). Nurses joined the two new nursing services: the Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Service (RAAFNS) and the Royal Australian Naval Nursing Service (RANNS) as well as the existing Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS). In December 1942, the Australian Army Medical Women’s Service (AAMWS) was established, and members served as nursing aides alongside army nurses. Amongst them were 60 MLC School Old Girls.

Next time you are in Potts Hall, I encourage you to take a moment to read the honour boards that name the past students who served our country and the role that they played in the war efforts.

My thanks and congratulations to our Cadets and the Cadet Officers for their contribution to our service today. Their presentation, discipline and respect added an appropriate solemnity to the event.

We’re sorry if you haven’t heard back from us

We’re sorry if you haven’t heard back from us

We have uncovered a terrible glitch in our system that may account for why some parents have not heard back from staff if they have sent a message through the My Student portal. These queries do not go directly to the staff member’s email address but rather to a central mailbox address: mlcschool@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au. You might have responded to a portal notice or made a query about a fee statement – all these have gone to that mail address, and until now that mailbox has been unmonitored. We sincerely apologise.

We are working through these emails now and will reply as soon as possible.

Please note, if you wish to contact a teacher or staff member the general email protocol at MLC School is: First initial Surname followed by @mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au. For example, to contact John Smith you would use jsmith@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au.

Again, we apologise for this oversight.

Friday 18 November 2022 is White Ribbon Day

The annual White Ribbon Day is a day to raise awareness about men’s violence against women and girls. As part of the global movement, this event highlights the importance of learning what domestic violence is, understanding its impacts within our community and seeking opportunities where we can each help others.

Throughout next week, White Ribbon badges will be sold for $2 each morning (cash only). The funds raised will go towards White Ribbon Australia, which is a charity that engages men and boys to end violence against women in order to promote gender equality and create new opportunities for men to build positive, healthy, and respectful relationships. Furthermore, during Thursday’s Luminary sessions, discussions will take place around the intentions of White Ribbon Day, its purpose and how girls can actively engage in the issue.

In addition, on Friday morning, we will be holding a discussion panel in the open area of the first floor of the Senior Centre from 7.30am to 8am. With both MLC School and Newington student speakers, we will host a forum with the aim of raising awareness around issues surrounding domestic violence. We will be focusing on normalising these conversations, eradicating stigmas around the topic, and informing students on different support avenues and how they can be of help to others.

We hope to see you all there – bring a friend and remember to buy a badge throughout the week!

Paul Dillon Webinar for Parents – Teen vaping: An update for parents

Monday 14 November 2022
7pm–8.30pm

Vaping (the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or ‘vapes’) continues to be an issue that attracts a great deal of attention as well as debate across the country. Vaping is a new phenomenon, with the first e-cigarette being invented in 2003. As a result, many parents have little or no experience with the issue as the devices simply weren’t around when they were in their teens.

This session will examine what we currently know about the use of e-cigarettes and vaping amongst Australian school-based young people. This is an area that is constantly changing and parents attempting to make sense of the information provided by both the ‘pro-vaping’ and ‘anti-vaping’ lobbies may find it extremely difficult to navigate. As we move towards the end of the school year parents are likely to need as much assistance as possible.

Cost: $25 plus GST

This event will be live-streamed but, for those unable to attend live, a recording of the event will also be made available for a period following the event’s conclusion.

Year 5 Canberra Immersion

Year 5 Canberra Immersion

Last week Year 5 students participated in an education tour of the national capital over three days and two nights. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy, including visiting Parliament House, The War Memorial, CSIRO, museums and art galleries, National Archives MOAD and Electoral Education office to name a few. Students had fun at the pool on the first night, and Questacon the second night. It was surprisingly chilly with the snow spotted on the local mountains

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the School upon completion of the excursion.

From the Acting Deputy Principal and Head of Senior School

From the Acting Deputy Principal and Head of Senior School

This week saw the Senior School commence the new academic year and it was heralded last week by great excitement as timetables were released to students on Friday. For our Year 9 girls there is great anticipation as they undertake new electives that are focused on their passions. For our Year 11 students it has signalled the start of the final years of their education at MLC School and the next major milestone in their learning. Year 12 have reached the point where the end of this stage of their learning journey is in sight, and they now gather their strength for the final stretch.

For some girls though, this week has been a challenge. They may have a new teacher that they do not know and who does not know them. They may not be in classes with their friends, and we all acknowledge that this part of growing up is not always easy to navigate.  And, while it may seem trite to call this character building, there is truth to this. I reflected this week on a quote attributed to Kurt Hahn founder of Outward Bound and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

“There is more in us than we know. If we can be made to see it, perhaps for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less”

I believe the message we can take from this is to encourage the girls to sit with discomfort for just a little while and draw upon an inner strength that will be there, whether she realises or not yet. We can encourage the girls to reframe the way they are feeling and see the changes through a different lens. Instead of focusing on them not having a friend in their class, talk with your daughter about the opportunity to get to know others in their year group. If your daughter is shy and nervous about this talk with them about there being other girls in the class who feel the same way. Perhaps she can be the one with the courage to offer the first gesture towards a new friendship. If we as their teachers and parents always step in to ease the way at the first sign of difficulty, we rob our girls of the opportunity to grow and find the inner strength that will carry them through the challenging times.

The notion of being “unwilling to settle for less” sits comfortably beside our motto of Dare to be More. We want our girls to aim high in whatever they pursue whether it be academic achievement, service to others or collaboration as part of team. To equip them to do this, the development of the strategies to work through periods of uncertainty and challenge is essential.

PDHPE Update

PDHPE Update

It has been an exciting start to the new academic year, with students and Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) staff eagerly anticipating their first lessons together. First and foremost, students were involved in various ‘ice breaker’ activities where they could get to know their peers and develop new relationships. In practical lessons, students from Year 6 to Year 10 showed plenty of enthusiasm in an array of different games and sports. The main image is a snapshot from Year 11 students completing their Internal Assessments in Week 5.

Year 8

Year 8

Welcome to Year 8! It’s been an exciting week and I’m pleased to say that Year 8 have settled in smoothly to their new classes, new timetables, and new routines. We started our week with Big Sister Little Sister in Luminary time. The Big Sisters worked closely with their Little Sisters to help them break down their timetable, chat about their new teachers and give them ideas and strategies for making new connections in their classes. I thoroughly enjoyed walking around to the groups and seeing all the students deeply engaged in the advice and support they were receiving.

It was also lovely to catch up with lots of families at the Parent Teacher Interviews this week, and put faces to the names and voices I have touched base with over the year. As mentioned previously, I will be continuing on as the Head of Year with this amazing cohort of students until the end of Year 9. I am very excited about this and look forward to continuing on this journey through the early years of high school with them.

Thank you for your ongoing support, and as always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Year 9

Year 9

This week, Year 9 experienced the first week of their new timetable and the first week of their new classes. Some were thrilled; excited to be in new classes, starting their electives, working with new students and getting to know new teachers. Some were a little apprehensive; uncertain about the new and finding their way a little more cautiously. What has been great to see is that the cohort was being supportive of one another.

The cohort spent Monday’s Luminary session working to get themselves organised for the week ahead by reviewing their new timetables and planning out their term. On Thursday each group was provided with letter paper and envelopes and were tasked with writing a letter to their future selves. The letter was an opportunity to reflect on their experiences this year and to make goals and plans for the coming year. The letters will be opened at the end of Year 9 (and are now stored safely with me until that time).

Thank you to everyone in the cohort for being so diligent with their uniforms, it is so fantastic to see them all turn up looking so sharp.

All the best for the weekend ahead.

Looking for Alibrandi – Year 9 Drama Excursion

Looking for Alibrandi – Year 9 Drama Excursion

Last week our new students who have chosen elective Drama for 2023 went on a theatre excursion to Belvoir Street Theatre to see the adaptation of the classic novel, Looking for Alibrandi. This was the first real theatre experience on a live excursion for our girls, as theatre closed during the pandemic affecting all the professions who make theatre come to life on stage.

The play tells the story of three generations of women in a family in Sydney. It focuses on the Italian-Australian migrant experience but any family who has migrated could relate to the story. Our girls loved the experience with one saying, ‘Because the main character was 17, the play was interesting’. Another said, ‘I’m not Italian but I talked about the play with my parents who migrated to Australia with my grandmother’. We hope this is one of many great ‘live’ theatre experiences in the future.

Year 10

Year 10

Week 5 marks the rollover of the academic year and Year 9 have now moved into their Year 10 program. It is my great pleasure to welcome you all into the Year 10 community. A special welcome goes to our new students also. The new students were officially welcomed in our Year meeting this week. The Luminary team and I are really looking forward to working with you in the Senior Years. Last, but by no means least, a big thank you goes to the Head of Year 9, Kylie Bickerstaff and her Luminary team for the solid foundations and excellent pastoral work done with this cohort from Year 7 to Year 9. Her support and care in the transition of Year 9 to Year 10 has been invaluable.

The academic prizes for 2022 were announced this week and we celebrated the success of those students who have achieved outstanding academic excellence. Special awards have also been given to nominees who displayed consistent growth and development in their studies this year. I’ve been spending the week getting to know everyone and what really impressed me about this assembly was how genuinely happy the year group was to celebrate the success of these students and ‘claim’ it as a group effort.

It has been a busy week with new classes, teachers and timetables. The girls have done a great job so far in the adjustment to the new routine but please let us know if your daughter is struggling with the management of the transition this term and needs some further support.

A dedicated team of Year 10 volunteers stepped up to lead tour groups, answering questions from prospective parents and students and leading them around the campus. Feedback from the parents on the day was how impressed they were with Year 10 in their communication, confidence and sense of commitment to MLC School. This opportunity comes around regularly and I encourage every student to participate in their Senior Years, as what they have to say and present is so valuable. You are also fed some great food from the café as a thank you!

A number of parents have been contact about book lists for 2023. This link to the My MLC School Portal directs you to Year 10 book list and the Campion website for ordering.

If you need to discuss any aspect of your daughter’s progress in Year 10, or if I can be of any assistance, please email me or call 02 8741 9736.

Sharon Connolly
Head of Year 10

Year 11

Year 11

The overnight transformation of our Year 11 cohort has been quite remarkable. Walking around campus this week, I have loved seeing our students in pods, break out spaces and the library working away. They are taking the switch into Senior Years seriously, and already there is an air of focus and determination about the group.

I know that some students have found embarking on new courses a little overwhelming. Many subjects start the course showing the students what they need to be aiming for and explaining what the next two years will look like. The bar is set high. I have spoken to many students and reassured them. Yes, at times it will be hard. Yes, at times they will have an awful lot of work. Yes, at times they will struggle. However, throughout all of this they have an expert team of teachers who will support them, guide them, and ensure that they can flourish. Their teachers have done this year in year out, and we are well versed in coaching and mentoring Year 11 and Year 12 students through the ups and downs of the HSC and IB courses. It’s important now, more than ever, that your daughter asks for help when she needs it whether that be from her subject teacher, her Luminary or me.

Fiona Pow
Head of Year 11

Year 12

Year 12

Congratulations to the 2023 cohort on beginning Year 12 this week. They are really looking the part as leaders of the School with their shiny Prefect badges.

Many students, particularly the HSC cohort, are pleased with their new timetables. They spent time with their Year 8 Little Sisters during Luminary on Monday helping them adjust, plan and reframe their attitudes. It was great to see the amount of conversation happening across the various Luminary rooms and encouraging to hear one Year 12 student recommend to their Little Sister in Year 8 that they should hand their phone into their parents, when the Year 8 student had complained they were not getting enough sleep.

The Year 12 Common Room and jerseys are privileges to look forward to. There are no other significant changes to privileges from Year 11 into Year 12. Hence, some students are requiring reminders about what they can and cannot be allowed to do with their Senior Passes. The Senior Pass allows them to arrive at 10.05am if they have a spare period in the morning or leave at 1.25pm if they have no more classes for the day.

Please support the School with the following conditions of their Senior Passes:

  • If a student is unwell and has classes, they must sign out via the Nurse, not just have a parent text and leave school. This includes both medical and mental health conditions.
  • All of Year 12 must be at school from at least 10.05am to 1.25pm.
  • A student must sign in and sign out of school if they have spare periods in 1ab and 3ab.
  • Once a student has signed into school, they are not allowed to sign out again until 1.25pm if they have a spare period in 3ab or until after an extension class if they have one after school.

The uniform has been looking great lately, thank you for all you do behind the scenes to encourage this to happen.

Please do not hesitate to reach out. I can be reached by emailing arenwick@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au or calling 02 8741 3278.

  • Your unconditional offer will be sent to you by email. You can also access it by logging in to your UAC application for undergraduate admission and selecting ‘View correspondence’.
  • To accept your unconditional offer, follow the instructions set out in your offer. You must accept your offer by the date specified by the institution, otherwise you may lose your offer.

Conditional SRS Offers

  • Conditional SRS offers require you to meet other condition/s before the institution will make you an unconditional offer. These condition/s may include a minimum ATAR, course prerequisites, a personal statement, a portfolio, an audition, an interview or a test.
  • Conditional SRS offers will only be made in November Round 1 and can be made to any preference.
Notification
  • Your conditional offer will be sent to you by email. You can also access it by logging in to your UAC application for undergraduate admission and selecting ‘View correspondence’.
  • To convert your conditional offer to an unconditional offer, you must:
    • Meet the condition/s stipulated in the offer
    • Meet all other institution requirements for that course
    • Include the course in your list of preferences by midnight Friday 16 December 2022

(closing date of change of preference for December Round 2)

  • It is possible to receive more than one conditional offer, but only one of them can become an unconditional offer in December Round 2.
  • If you receive more than one conditional offer, once your ATAR is released you can determine if you meet the criteria for those offers. You will then need to decide which course preference you would most like to convert into an unconditional offer.
  • Place the course that you would most like to convert into an unconditional offer at the top of your list of preferences by midnight Friday 16 December 2022. By this date you will have received your ATAR, so if a minimum ATAR is one of the conditions you will know if you have met it.

Receiving Further Offers

  • Once you’ve received an unconditional offer, you can’t be made an unconditional offer to any lower course preferences in the next round unless you change your preferences.
  • So, to receive further offers in subsequent rounds, you first need to accept the course you’ve already been offered, then move that course down to the bottom of your list of course preferences or remove it entirely. (As long as you have accepted an offer, removing it from your list of preferences will not affect your existing offer.)
  • Alternatively, if you receive an unconditional offer to a lower preference, you will automatically be considered for higher preferences in the next round.
  • To change your preferences, log in to your UAC application and go to ‘Update course preferences’.
  • If you then receive an offer to a course in your new list, you can decide whether to accept it and withdraw from your original course, or not accept the new offer and keep your place in your original course.

November Round 1 SRS Offers

  • On Friday 11 November 2022 you can receive either an unconditional offer or a conditional offer.
  • If you receive an unconditional offer, congratulations! Go ahead and accept it. If you want to stay in the running for another offer in subsequent rounds, move the course you’ve been offered down to the bottom of your list of course preferences or remove it entirely. (As long as you have accepted the offer, you can’t lose it.)
  • If you receive a conditional offer, you still need to meet additional criteria before the institution will make you an unconditional offer in December Round 2 (on Thursday 22 December 2022) or January Round 1 (Thursday 12 January 2023). The institution will tell you what these are in the conditional offer email you receive on Friday 11 November 2022
  • You might receive more than one conditional offer on Friday 11 November 2022, but only one of them can become an unconditional offer in December Round 2.
  • In this offer round, like in all rounds, you’ll receive an offer to the course that is highest in your list of preferences and for which you are eligible and competitive enough. So make sure you have the course you most want to study at the top of your list of preferences, even if you haven’t received a conditional offer to it.

Representative Swimming Squad Trials

Representative Swimming Squad Trials

To prepare our interested swimmers for the competition season, we are once again holding our assessment day for our Representative Swimming Squad.

Participating in this squad will develop students’ skills and competence in competitive swimming, enabling them to compete with confidence and achieve the goals they set for themselves. The format of moving to a squad-based program means we can develop a team culture based on being committed to training, supporting and encouraging our teammates, and competing to the best of our ability. We want our athletes to learn that hard work pays off, we want them to develop self-belief and to be proud to represent MLC School at Inter-school Championships. The introduction of this squad program has led to our senior swimmers achieving State and National representation.

Being members of a representative swimming program provides more opportunities for training, and other competitions outside of the major IGSA and IPSHA Championships for those students who want to take competing to that next level, and possibly continue on the representative pathway for swimming.

The assessment day will be in the form of time trials. Students will need to swim 50m in any or all of the four swimming strokes.

For students in Year 3 and Year 4 a guide to the times they should be swimming are faster than 50 seconds over 50 metres in all four strokes.

Students in Year 5 and should be faster than 40 seconds.

Students in this squad will be expected to train once a week during the Christmas holiday period, and twice a week during Term 1. Training days are either Tuesday or Friday mornings 7am–8am. This is subject to change depending on the needs of the squad.

Students in this squad are not guaranteed a swim at the IPSHA and IGSA Championships. These teams will primarily be selected from this squad based on times at targeted meets.

If you would like your daughter to trial for the Representative Swimming Squad, please complete the below form by Friday 25 November 2022.

Absences from Sport

What to Do When You Are Not Able to Make Training or a Game

On the rare occasions that it may be necessary for a player to miss training or a competition, please follow these instructions.

  • If the inability to attend is known in advance – a written explanation (email) from the player’s parent/carer is to be given to the coach and Sports department in advance. This notice should be given as early as possible.
  • If the player is absent from school on the day of training or on competition day – the player’s parent/carer is asked to advise the coach and Sports department of their daughter’s absence from training or the game.
  • Do not ask your friends or teammates to give your coach the message.
  • Do give as much notice as possible.
  • If there is a clash with another sport or school event, please speak with the Sports department to determine which game/event you should attend.

Please note: Continued failure to attend training or competitions without a timely written explanation is unacceptable and may jeopardise the player’s continued involvement in sport.

A member of the Sports department will contact parents/carers of students whose non-attendance at training or games is not notified in the correct manner.

Pockets are only awarded to students who have attended at least 80% of training and games.

Wet Weather

What do I do if it is wet weather?
While on most occasions we would not cancel training for wet weather, cancellations may occur if rain is too heavy to train in or weather conditions deem it unsafe. Additionally, due to safe distancing measures and government guidelines, we may be required to cancel training when we cannot accommodate students safely in an indoor space.

  • Morning Training – The decision to cancel any morning training sessions will be made by 8pm the night before training.
  • After School Training – The decision to cancel any after school training sessions will be made by 1pm on the day of training.

Wet weather cancellations will be posted on the MLC School Sport Facebook Page, followed by an email. No Facebook post or email means that activities will still go ahead.

Saturday Sport
If you are playing an IPSHA Sport, please visit the IPSHA Wet Weather site here. Once on the site, select your venue and there will be a notification if your venue is closed. IPSHA normally make a decision by 7am.

If you are playing an IGSA Sport, visit https://igsasport.spawtz.com/Leagues/VenueStatus. The IGSA website will let you know if your venue is closed or open.

When possible, we will also post the cancellations on our Sport Facebook page.

On all occasions, it is the individuals’ responsibility to check the wet weather information. The Sports department, coaches and managers are not always in a position to relay any game cancellations.

Gelato Experience at the Italian Club

Gelato Experience at the Italian Club

Junior School girls in Italian Club were ‘immersed’ in a gelato experience this week. Not only did they taste artisan Italian gelato kindly offered by Prof Tagliabue, alias maestra Elisa and maestra Rosa, but they also learnt about the origins of Italian gelato, which was invented around 1550 in Florence by Bernardo Buontalenti, a Renaissance man of many ‘talenti’, indeed.

In order to receive gelato, the girls need to learn how to ask for a gelato in Italian. No Italian, no gelato! You should have seen their commitment in trying to learn the lines: posso avere un gelato per favore? In the end, everyone was able to order a gelato in Italian. Bravissime tutte!
