Celebrating our 140th year with our Sapphires and our Kindergarteners

This week, we welcomed a record number of guests to our annual Sapphires Luncheon, an event which brings together some of our oldest alumnae for a celebration of friendship and shared memories. Those who joined us on Tuesday graduated between 1949 and 1975, and there was no shortage of stories to tell as they reflected on their school days and reconnected with one another.

Looking around the room on Tuesday, I was struck by the joy that shared memories continue to bring. Stories of school days, familiar jokes and past adventures sparked laughter and lively conversation among our Old Girls, a lovely reminder of the enduring pleasure of being with those who knew us when we were young.

At the other end of the spectrum, our Kindergarteners celebrated their 140th day of school today. Their equally joyous chatter, sense of fun and engagement was infectious, and it was wonderful to see so many parents and friends joining in the fun and learning.

There may be more than a 90-year age difference between our Kindergarten students and the oldest Sapphire in attendance on Tuesday, yet being part of both events in the same week was an important reminder that school is a place of growth – not only academically, but socially and emotionally. The lessons and experiences that our girls have from the day that they start in Pre-Kindergarten or Kindergarten will shape who they become and the mark they make on the world.

There is also something wonderful about knowing that your daughters may already be forming friendships that will sustain them through difficult times and bring them joy for decades to come. I hope that one day, they too may gather as Sapphires, laughing over shared memories and picking up conversations as though no time has passed.

Compass Update – App Features and a New User Guide

Compass Update – App Features and a New User Guide

Thank you for your patience over the past week following the launch of our new MLC School app on Thursday 15 October.

By regrettable coincidence, our launch coincided with a major Compass software update. This update automatically enabled several features that we had intentionally disabled during testing and that we had planned to introduce at a later date.

This meant that the new MLC School app looked and felt very different from what many of you expected and we are very grateful for the valuable feedback you shared with us. We heard you and we have already made changes. Here is what we have updated so far:

  • Absence alerts: We resolved the issue that caused incorrect late class absence alerts to be sent.
  • Co-curricular: We improved the visibility of Co-curricular information so it is easier to find.
  • Shortcuts: We strengthened the app’s shortcuts, particularly for submitting Absentee notices.
  • Simplified menus: We removed all the unused and confusing links and menus that came with the Compass update.
  • Reports: These are now conveniently listed under your daughter’s profile. Access them by clicking on your daughter’s profile on the Home Page. Next select Essentials followed by Reports.
  • Excursions (permissions) and Events: These are accessible by clicking on Menu located at the  bottom of the screen and then selecting the Events tab.
  • Illness/Misadventure: To navigate to this Form, select Menu and then click on the Connect icon. Your forms are listed at the bottom of the Action Centre. (For more details on this Form, please read the Compass User Guide via the button below )
  • Parent Guide: We have updated the Parent Guide which is accessible via this button.

Downloading the MLC School app
Ensure you have the correct, up to date app by using the links below. These will take you directly to the MLC School app in your app store:
Flexischools and bus travel: no change
Some services have not changed with the new app:
Personalising your Calendar
You can set up the Calendar to suit your family: in the Calendar tab, select the layer icon to add or remove as many calendar layers as you like. This lets you see only the events that matter to you and your daughter.

We will continue to refine the app based on your feedback. If you have any questions or need help, please contact IT Service by email on service@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au.

Thank you again for your support and partnership.

A Fresh Approach to Student Images

A Fresh Approach to Student Images

You will start to see a new look across our social media channels and online marketing materials. As part of our commitment to protecting student privacy while continuing to celebrate our vibrant learning community, we’re taking a more thoughtful approach to how student images are used.

This updated approach places greater emphasis on capturing the spirit of student life through candid moments, group activities and learning experiences. This will mean fewer individual images.

We’re aiming to balance the risks associated with unapproved use of online images, with storytelling, so we can continue to showcase the incredible achievements, connections and experiences that make our community special. However, ensuring students and families feel confident in how their images are represented is paramount. In time, you will see earlier posts with identifiable images being archived.

Student moments will still be celebrated with families in Audacia newsletter and in Lucis magazine.

STEM School Challenge Grand Final 2026

STEM School Challenge Grand Final 2026

On Monday, six Year 6 students and six Year 9 students attended the STEM Schools Challenge Grand Finale 2026. Students were placed in different teams, giving them the opportunity to work collaboratively with students they had not worked with before, communicate effectively and contribute their ideas to a shared challenge.

Throughout the day, students worked through a Design Sprint process, including an Empathy Think Tank, Ideation Blitz, Prototype Sprint and Pitch Parlour. The girls embraced each stage with enthusiasm, creativity and confidence, developing innovative ideas and presenting their solutions.

Congratulations to all our students for their fantastic participation, with a special mention to Mila Coote (Year 6), whose team placed third overall. It was a fun-filled, action-packed day of collaboration, creativity, and STEM learning!

Carrying the Light Across Generations: Sapphires and Pre-Kindergarten

This week, the Chapel welcomed members of our community at two very different stages of their MLC School journey. On Tuesday, our Sapphires (Old Girls who graduated 51+ years ago) returned for a special service before their luncheon; on Wednesday afternoon, our Pre-Kindergarten students entered the Chapel for the first time. Together, these occasions offered a moving picture of MLC School’s story – cherished across generations and continually renewed.

The Sapphires’ service, themed Carrying the Light and Remembering with Gratitude, reflected on the sapphire as a symbol of strength, faithfulness and sincerity. Our guests brought with them treasured memories of friendships, influential teachers, hymns, stories and moments of mischief that have grown richer with every retelling. Their presence expressed an enduring bond with the School and honoured the wisdom and resilience they continue to share.

Psalm 27, The Lord is my light and my salvation… guided the reflection and reminded us that God’s light is often revealed through ordinary acts of love. For generations, the Chapel has been a sacred heart of MLC School: a place of welcome and farewell, prayer and celebration, reconciliation and remembrance.

That tradition took on fresh meaning the following day when our Pre-Kindergarten girls arrived with curiosity, wonder and joy. Their first visit marked a beautiful beginning as they discovered a place that will accompany them through many seasons of school life. Where our Sapphires recalled experiences gathered over decades, our youngest students stood at the threshold of memories still to be made.

Seen together, these gatherings revealed the fullness of belonging at MLC School. The Sapphires embody a legacy shaped through faith, friendship and service; the Pre-Kindergarten students represent its promise and possibility. Each has a place in the same unfolding narrative, and each enriches the community by being part of it.

We give thanks for those who have shaped our School, for friends remembered among the great cloud of witnesses, and for the children now beginning their journey. The light kindled here does not remain in one time or one generation; it is shared through lives, relationships and acts of care.

From treasured memories to new beginnings, our Sapphires and Pre-Kindergarten students remind us that MLC School is one community, held together by gratitude and hope. May the light entrusted to each generation continue to shine brightly, guiding those who follow and carrying our shared story courageously into the future.

Study Hub+

Study Hub+

Study Hub Form – Term 4

Study Hub+ is MLC School’s structured, pay‑per‑use after‑school study support program, designed for students in Year 7 to Year 12 who would benefit from more personalised academic guidance in a focused and supportive environment.

While the Study Hub provides a supervised space for independent study for Year 11 and Year 12, Study Hub+ offers a higher level of individualised, responsive support. Sessions are student‑led, allowing mentors to tailor assistance based on each student’s specific needs on the day. This may include consolidating class learning, clarifying assessment requirements, preparing for examinations, or developing effective and sustainable study routines.

Led by Program Coordinator Ela Huber, Study Hub+ is supported by a team of knowledgeable mentors, all of whom are pre‑service teachers or working towards a career in education. Most mentors are in the final stages of their undergraduate or Master of Teaching degrees and bring with them a strong depth of subject knowledge, alongside up‑to‑date, innovative and curriculum‑aligned resources. This ensures students receive guidance that is relevant and closely aligned with classroom expectations.

A key strength of Study Hub+ is the opportunity for students to work alongside a mentor, particularly when engaging with written tasks. Mentors can read through work with students, ask guiding questions, suggest improvements to structure, clarity and expression, and help students refine their ideas and arguments. While mentors are unable to mark work or provide grades, they can offer valuable feedback and editing support prior to submission, helping students better understand how to improve their work independently.

Mentors can support students with:

  • Revising and consolidating key concepts and class content
  • Examination preparation and revision strategies
  • Planning and organising assessments and study schedules
  • Reading through drafts alongside students and suggesting edits or refinements
  • Developing confidence, independence and effective study habits

Study Hub+ also plays an important role in supporting students in an era where AI is a valuable and encouraged tool at MLC School, but one that requires thoughtful, ethical and informed use. Students can sometimes over‑rely on AI when completing homework and assessments, which may leave them unsure about underlying concepts, task expectations or how to improve their own work.

At Study Hub+, mentors help reinforce the appropriate and ethical use of AI by guiding students to use these tools as a support for learning rather than a replacement for thinking. Mentors work with students to unpack questions, clarify concepts, check understanding and refine ideas, ensuring students remain actively engaged in their learning and confident in the work they submit.

Program Overview

  • Schedule: Monday to Thursday, 3.30pm–6pm (term time)
  • Location: Level 1, Senior Centre

Recognising the importance of a conducive environment for focused study, MLC School has established a free after-hours Study Hub exclusively for our Year 11 and Year 12 students. Located on Level 3 of the Senior Centre, the Study Hub provides a quiet and supportive space where students can concentrate on their studies, complete assessments, and prepare for examinations under the supervision of experienced MLC School staff across many subject areas.

Key Features:

  • Experienced staff: Two teachers rostered each evening from different subject areas, to guide and assist students with their academic queries and provide valuable feedback.
  • Convenient location: Level 3 of the Senior Centre, providing easy access for Senior students.
  • Flexible hours: The study hub is open Monday to Thursday 3.30pm–6pm, allowing students to make the best use of their time outside regular school hours. Partial attendance is welcome.

Thank you to the Year 1 parents and carers who joined us for this week’s Year 1 Assembly. It was wonderful to welcome you and share this special occasion with our students.

Sydney Science Park STEM Cross-Schools Challenge

On Monday, a group of our Year 6 students took part in the Sydney Science Park STEM Cross-Schools Challenge. Working in teams with students from other schools, the girls enjoyed an exciting and successful day of collaboration, problem-solving and discovery. It was a valuable opportunity to tackle STEM challenges alongside their peers and to build new connections. Our thanks to Year 6 Coordinator Melissa Bye for accompanying and supporting the students at this enriching event. Read the feature by clicking here.

Celebrating 140 Days of Growth in Kindergarten

This term, our Kindergarten girls celebrated a very special milestone: 140 Days of Kindergarten, in honour of MLC School’s 140th anniversary. While many schools traditionally celebrate 100 days of learning, our students embraced the opportunity to reflect on 140 days of growth, discovery and belonging within the MLC School community.

In keeping with this term’s Junior School Value of Growth, the girls arrived dressed as beautiful flowers, plants and other symbols of nature. Their costumes reflected the remarkable progress each child has made during her first year of primary education. From developing new skills and friendships to growing in confidence and independence, the girls have flourished since beginning their school journey.

It was wonderful to welcome parents, grandparents and other family members to share in the celebration, together with our Principal, Lisa Moloney. Just as every flower grows and blooms in its own unique way, so too do our Kindergarten girls. We look forward to seeing their learning journeys continue to flourish over the next 140 school days and throughout the years ahead.

Junior School Swimming Programs

A reminder to our Kindergarten to Year 2 families that the intensive swimming program begins next week. Please ensure your daughter brings all required swimming items each day. Students will attend swimming lessons each day for the next two weeks and celebrate their progress on Friday 6 November 2026 at their Splash Day Carnival.

Pre-Kindergarten’s swimming program will also begin next week. Swimming lessons will take place each Tuesday over the next four weeks.

Adventures, Immersions and Gym

Next week we wish Year 5 all the best for their immersion to Canberra. Year 6 will be attending their Adventure camp at Gerringong and Year 3 at Stanwell Tops. We also wish our IPSHA Gymnastics all the best for their carnival at the Sydney Gymnastics Centre.

MLC School Old Girls – Sapphires

On Tuesday, twelve of our youngest girls from Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 had the special privilege of presenting flowers to twelve of our oldest Old Girls at our annual Sapphires Luncheon.

Our Sapphires are our Old Girls who graduated from MLC School 51+ years ago and the Luncheon honours their lifelong connection to our community. This year our newest Sapphires were from the Class of 1975, and our oldest from the Class of 1949.

The flower presentation was made even more meaningful this year as each of the twelve Junior School girls has another connection to MLC School: they were all daughters, granddaughters and nieces of MLC School Old Girls. These generational connections and the long friendships of our Sapphires, highlight the enduring bonds that span generations and decades within our School community.

Year 2 – A Message for Parents and Carers

Year 2 – A Message for Parents and Carers

As part of our ongoing commitment to improving learning and teaching opportunities for students, MLC School engages Academic Assessment Services to conduct a series of diagnostic assessment tasks as students progress through their schooling. Analysed in conjunction with other assessment data, the results are a valuable resource for us in preparing teaching strategies and materials, and in gaining more information about how students are progressing with their learning and how we can support them into the future.

These assessments usually occur when students are in Year 2, Year 4, Year 6, Year 8 and Year 10. Students who are currently in Year 2 will complete the assessments on Monday 26 October 2026.

The assessments are designed for Year 2 students and are of suitable duration and structure. Your daughter does not need to prepare for the tests. The best way to support her is by ensuring she arrives to school on time, relaxed and refreshed after a good night’s sleep.

Please note that there is no additional cost to you for this assessment service.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Another week done at MLC School! The girls have been fantastic this week wearing hats at recess and lunch and our Year 10 students have completed their examination block. Congratulations to the girls on completing this challenge, they have been great!

New Compass portal

Thank you to everyone for the way in which you have embraced our new parent information system. As we have completed our first week, I am so pleased to report that attendance tracking is much more user friendly than it was previously and our visibility and real time tracking of students throughout the campus has been greatly enhanced. Your daughter may have told you that she received a new student card.

Your daughter will use her student card in the following situations:

  • When arriving late or leaving early, she should tap her card at the Compass kiosk in the Studies Office.
  • When she is out of class during a timetabled lesson – for example, visiting the Health Centre, attending a private music lesson, or completing a study period at Kent House – she should tap her card at the nearest kiosk so that her location is recorded.
  • When moving around campus, she should use her card to sign in at a different location if she is not in her scheduled class.

What else can your daughter use her card for?

  • Canteen purchases: the card still includes a barcode for canteen use.
  • Bus transport: the card will continue to work for bus travel. Please remind your daughter to tap on and tap off.
  • Coming soon: an easier tap-to-use option for bus transport is planned.

What if she loses her card?

If she loses or damages her card, a replacement card can be printed for a fee. You will also be able to order replacement cards directly through Compass for a fee.

New features coming later this term

  • Tap to print: students will be able to use their Compass Card to print.
  • Tap to charge: students will be able to use their card at the Service Desk charging locker.

Mathematics News

We have two wonderful and long-standing members of our Mathematics Department who will be leaving us this year. Both are not moving on to other schools but on to a different phase of their careers. We are now in the active phase of recruitment for our Mathematics Department in 2027.

Kestie Neligan

After an incredible 44 years in teaching, including 23 years at MLC School, with the last few years on a part-time basis, Kestie is retiring from teaching to embark on a new chapter of her career in an administrative role. She will finish teaching on Friday 6 November before taking some well deserved long service leave. Derek Truong will teach Kestie’s Year 9 class from that time.

Throughout her 23 years at MLC School, Kestie has held various roles and made significant contributions to the School community. Her extensive knowledge of the School, its people, and its history is truly remarkable. Her commitment to the School and willingness to share her experience have made her a much valued member of the MLC School community.

While we will certainly miss Kestie, we sincerely thank her for her many years of service and the lasting contributions she has made to MLC School. We wish her happiness, fulfillment, and success.

Monica Lee

After eight years as a valued member of the Mathematics Department, Monica Lee is resigning her position at MLC School at the end of this year. She will take a break from teaching while considering her next career to move beyond education.

As an Old Girl of MLC School (2011), Monica has a special and longstanding connection with the School community. Throughout her time here, Monica has shown genuine care for her students and a strong commitment to supporting their learning. Her kindness, professionalism, and dedication have been greatly appreciated.

Monica will continue teaching with us until the end of the school year. While we will certainly miss her, we sincerely thank her for her contributions to the Mathematics Department and the wider School community and wish her every happiness and success in the next chapter.

Year 7

Year 7

Another busy week has flown by for our Year 7 girls, with school life back in full swing!

A special well done to Year 7 for being among the most consistent groups in following the new requirement to wear hats when outside during recess and lunch. It has been lovely to see the girls embracing this responsibility.

Over the past two weeks, the girls have reflected on the activities that have helped them feel connected at school. Highlights include spending time with their Year 11 Big Sisters, participating in the Athletics House Carnival and sharing their thoughts and opinions during circle activities. It is lovely to hear how these experiences have helped the girls feel connected to one another and to life at MLC School.

This week, the girls have also set goals for this term and for Year 8. Setting goals gives them something to work towards and provides opportunities to recognise and celebrate their progress along the way.

As assessments approach, I encourage each student to reach out to her class teachers if she has questions or needs support. Asking for help is a positive step towards feeling more confident and prepared.

Ms Stolzi’s challenges will continue, and it is wonderful to see the girls getting involved with such enthusiasm. Seeing their smiles is always a highlight of my week!

Finally, a gentle reminder to the girls to include others and celebrate the differences that make each of us unique. Every student has something valuable to contribute to our Year 7 community, and small acts of kindness can help everyone feel welcome and included.

Parents and carers of students who engage with the Learning Enhancement Department for Academic Learning Support and High Potential Learning are warmly invited to participate in a Kindergarten–Year 12 Parent Focus Group this term. A session for each will be run in November.

The session will provide an opportunity for families to share their experiences of engaging with Learning Enhancement, including what has been helpful for their daughter and where there may be opportunities to further strengthen our support, communication and partnership with families.

Your perspectives are important to us and will help inform the ongoing development of Learning Enhancement at MLC School.

Please email s.dimitrelis@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au to express your interest in participating.

Year 9

Year 9

Year 9 students recently heard from Angela Renwick, Head of Students – Year 7 to Year 9, about the opportunity to nominate themselves as Peer Support leaders for Year 7 in 2027. During Luminary sessions this term, students will build their leadership skills and learn activities they can use with Year 7 if they become Peer Support leaders. This is a valuable opportunity for Year 9 students to take on a mentoring role and help our incoming Year 7 students feel welcome and connected as they transition to high school. We encourage students to reflect on their own experiences of starting high school and consider the support they would have valued at that time. Being a Peer Support leader is not about having all the answers, but about being approachable, listening and knowing when to seek guidance from a teacher. These everyday acts of leadership offer meaningful ways for students to contribute to our School community.

During Luminary time, students had the opportunity to reflect on the goals they set for themselves in Term 3. While setting goals provides direction, taking time to reflect helps students recognise their progress, identify challenges and consider what they might do differently. A goal that has not yet been achieved may need a more realistic timeframe or smaller, manageable steps. For example, a broad goal such as improving organisation can be broken down into actions such as recording homework, planning ahead for assessments and checking materials for the following day. Regular check-ins provide an opportunity to celebrate small achievements, adjust strategies and seek support when needed. We encourage students to see goal setting and reflection as an ongoing process throughout their schooling, with a focus not only on the final outcome, but also on the habits and independence they are developing along the way.

A reminder that tickets for the St Patrick’s Dance are still on sale. Further information about the dance, including how to purchase tickets, can be found here.

Have a great weekend.

Year 10

Year 10

Week 2 has been a busy week with examinations and assessments, and Year 10 have risen to the challenge. They have learned new processes and skills and had real life experience of what it is like to sit for a senior exam. My congratulations to the girls who took it all in their stride, supported each other through the nerves, arrived on time and listened carefully to instructions. The exam invigilators were very impressed with their commitment, behaviour and organisation. Next week Year 10 are back in class, learning about new ideas and skills that will not only complete their Year 10 program but also prepare them for Year 11. Final preparations are taking place for the Work Experience week in Week 5 (Monday 9 November 2026) and Camp in Week 6 (Monday 16 November 2026), which we are very excited about.

We are very fortunate to have an exchange student from The Bishop Gate School in South Africa, Sarah Buchanan, who will be with us this term. Her exchange buddy is Darcy Costello, who was at Sarah’s school earlier in the year. Welcome Sarah!

Melisande Pitman, Piya Kaur and Roma Nadubeedi represented MLC School at the recent Round Square Conference held in Sydney. We’re very proud to have them give up their holiday time to represent the school. Round Square is a wonderful organisation built on global youth participation, and it is a great opportunity to meet students from across Australia and around the world. If your daughter is interested in Round Square, please encourage her to speak with these girls or Henry Wijanto, our Round Square Coordinator.

We would appreciate your support with your daughter’s uniform for the remainder of the term. We’ve noticed an improvement in the girls’ jewellery and nails, in particular. If your daughter has a second earring, it must be covered or have a clear stud/spacer in place. Skirt length needs to be on or just above the knee and the girls need a hat to wear during recess and lunch.

For academic issues and concerns, please reach out to your daughter’s class teacher. I am available Monday to Friday on 02 8741 9736 or by email on sconnolly1@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au to discuss pastoral and wellbeing concerns, as well as your daughter’s Luminary teacher. Issues can be discussed via phone, Teams meeting and on-site meetings.

Year 11

Year 11

Congratulations to all our Year 11 students who completed HSC examinations this week in either Accelerated Mathematics Advanced or Accelerated Studies of Religion I. Completing an HSC course is a significant milestone, and it is a wonderful achievement to have done so in Year 11. I am sure these students will have many insights, tips and strategies to share with their peers as everyone approaches their first HSC or IB assessment task over the coming weeks.

Thank you to all the families who were able to join us on Wednesday evening for the Year 12 2027 HSC/IB Information Evening. The evening was designed not only to provide important administrative information, but also to offer guidance about how you can support your daughter at home to achieve her best and enjoy a positive final year at school. Please find the slides from the evening attached here. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, David Posker-Hill, Director of Studies – Year 11 to Year 12, or Marianna Carlino, IB Coordinator.

This term we will officially celebrate all of Year 12 2027 at the Leadership Induction Ceremony. This will take place on Friday 6 November from 1.30pm. This is a special event that officially marks their transition into the senior leaders of the School and the beginning of their Year 12 journey. Attendance is compulsory for all students, and we hope many families will be able to join us to celebrate this important milestone. Please note this date in your diary.

It has also been lovely to see letters already being dropped off to Wendy Allen at the Front Office. As part of Year 11 Retreat, families are invited to write a letter to their daughter. Please place your letter in a sealed envelope with your daughter’s name and Luminary group clearly written on the front and place it in the collection box by Wednesday 4 November 2026.

Sport Report

Sport Report

What a fantastic start to the term last week, with students participating in a wide range of sporting pursuits. It was wonderful to see the MLC School colours proudly represented and supporters cheering from the sidelines. As we gear up for a big term of sport, I hope every student embraces the opportunities to participate, challenge themselves and connect with others.

This week, I’d like to reflect on how sport gives us opportunities to put our values into action.

Courage is stepping onto the court, field or into the pool, trying something new and giving your best, even when the outcome is uncertain.

Compassion is noticing when someone needs encouragement, supporting a teammate after a mistake and remembering that everyone has a place in sport.

Respect is shown in how we treat teammates, opponents, coaches and officials, whatever the result.

Growth comes from consistent effort, listening to feedback, and learning from both success and disappointment.

This week, I encourage every student to choose one of these Values and put it into practice. Success can be a personal best, a brave first attempt or helping someone else feel that they belong. Each is something to celebrate.

MLC on three – one, two, three, MLC!

Competitive Sport – Notification of Unavailability

Students are expected to attend all scheduled competitive sports training sessions and fixtures, including IGSA and IPSHA competitions.

If a student is unable to attend, parents or students must notify the MLC School Sports Department as early as possible, preferably well in advance of the scheduled session or fixture. For unexpected illnesses or emergencies, please notify the Sports Department as soon as practicable.

Advance notice allows staff to organise teams, arrange replacements, and ensure MLC School can meet its competition commitments. Please communicate directly with the Sports Department rather than relying on teammates to pass on a message.

Failure to provide appropriate notice and make the necessary arrangements will result in Accountability Points and may affect eligibility for future blazer Sports Pockets.

Term 1 2027 IGSA Sport Registrations

Registrations for Term 1 2027 IGSA Sport open next Friday 30 October 2026, via the Compass portal and will remain open for two weeks.

  • Senior School: Tennis, Touch, Badminton, AFL, and Water Polo
  • Junior School: (Year 3–Year 6): Football (Soccer) and Water Polo (Year 5–Year 6)

Trials for team sports will begin in Week 6 (starting Monday 16 November 2026)  when teams must be nominated to the IGSA Association. All other 2027 Recreational and Co-Curricular sport options will open Week 6.

DDE Performing Arts Tour: London and Paris 2026

DDE Performing Arts Tour: London and Paris 2026

During the September and October holidays, 60 students from Year 9 to Year 11 embarked on an unforgettable Dance, Drama and Entertainment (DDE) tour through London and Paris. Accompanied by staff Lisa Jinga, Head of Department – Dance, Drama and Entertainment, Jenna Skepper, Dance Coordinator, Kate Drady, Kellie Cogin, Amy Murphy and Jess Dyson, Assistant Dance Coordinator, students enjoyed an overseas adventure of performance, professional learning and cultural immersion.

In London, students explored iconic destinations including Borough Market, Camden Market, Covent Garden, Notting Hill and Portobello Road Markets, A cruise down the Thames, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, The London Eye and of course Buckingham Palace, just to name a few, while experiencing some of the world’s finest performing arts after nightfall. Highlights included attending performances of Alvin Ailey: New Works, Phantom of the Opera, Rhythm Riots, Stranger Things and Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.

Dance students participated in workshops with leading companies including Rambert, Tavaziva Dance and the Akram Khan Company, while Drama students trained with industry professionals through workshops at Frantic Assembly, Shakespeare’s Globe, Complicité and more.

The excitement continued in Paris, where students embraced the city’s vibrant culture, famous landmarks and artistic energy. Arriving in the heart of the city during the opening week of Paris Fashion Week added an unexpected highlight, with students enjoying a front-row view of the excitement unfolding outside their hotel, as celebrities and fashion icons descended on the city. Combined with visits to landmarks including the Louvre, Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower, Paris provided an unforgettable backdrop for learning and exploration.

A major highlight of the tour was the Dance students’ participation in the Disney Performing Arts Program at Disneyland Paris. After working with Disney professionals in a specialised workshop, the dancers took to the stage at the Videopolis Theatre, proudly representing MLC School before an international audience. Their polished and energetic performance showcased months of dedication, teamwork and rehearsals, creating a memorable moment for both performers and audience members alike.

The DDE Tour provided students with invaluable artistic experiences, lasting friendships and memories that will stay with them for years to come. It was a remarkable opportunity to learn from global artists, experience different cultures and celebrate the performing arts on an international stage.

Building International friendships through Round Square

Building International friendships through Round Square

During the holidays, Lily Smith, School Captain 2027, and I had the privilege of hosting and touring students from South Africa (Bridge House School) and Kenya (Brookhouse School). After meeting our Bridge House peers at Sydney airport, we had an evening showing them around Sydney. Although the weather wasn’t on our side, it was a great experience for them to see iconic spots like The Sydney Opera House.

The next day, we helped the IDEALS Society to lead tours around the MLC School campus and Burwood, focusing on the multiculturalism and innovation of the local area. As it was amid the mid-Autumn (Spring) Festival there was a lot of East Asian culture to share with our friends from Africa. We all thoroughly enjoyed our scavenger hunt around town, where we got to display the amazing community that our School is a part of. We introduced them to Australian delicacies (like Yochi) and shared nuanced details about local Sydney-Australian. Finally, we got to share some of Australia’s beloved snacks. Their reactions to Vegemite were definitely one for the books!

Unfortunately, after an amazing day, Lily and I had to say goodbye to our new friends as they departed for Barker College to commence the Round Square conference.

We had a great time with all our visitors, and we thank Ms Jauncey, Director of Experiential Learning, Mr Wijanto, Round Square Coordinator and Mr Rudd, Adventure and Immersions Coordinator, for making this experience possible.

You Couldn’t Make This Stuff Up… Actually, They Did!

You Couldn’t Make This Stuff Up… Actually, They Did!

A vault break-in that turns into a story of unrequited love, an interview with a lipstick expert who is horrified when her magenta lipstick is replaced with orange, and a soap opera scene set at a car wash featuring a car that hasn’t been washed in eighty years!

These were just some of the wonderful storylines explored by the MLC Juinor School Theatresports Team at Monday night’s Theatresports Schools Challenge Heats. Hosted by Impro Australia and attended by schools from across the Inner West, the MLC School players showcased incredible teamwork, characterisation and imagination while creating entertaining stories on the spot.

  • Cassandra Eadie (Year 8)
  • Annika Perosh (Year 8)
  • Evie Briers (Year 8)
  • April Cookson (Year 8)
  • Rosy Nichols (Year 7)

represented their school proudly and tied for FOURTH PLACE in the competition! This fantastic result means they have qualified for the next round, and we can’t wait to do it all again at the Semi Finals on Tuesday 3 November at St Patrick’s College, Strathfield, at 7pm.

The Speech and Drama Studio would like to congratulate the MLC Junior School Theatresports Team and their coach, Taylor Buoro-Long, on their incredible performance!

Want to give Theatresports a go?

We currently have spaces available for new members to join our Theatresports classes, coached by Ms Taylor, on Tuesday afternoons from 3.20pm–4.50pm in G33. Theatresports is a fantastic way to build confidence, creativity, teamwork and quick-thinking skills, all while having plenty of fun!

New students are welcome to come along for a trial class to see what Theatresports is all about. We’d love to see some new faces!

Here’s what the team had to say about the competition.

  • Cassandra Eadie (Year 8) – ‘I find that Theatresports is harder than normal acting, but it is more fun and people should join and challenge themselves.’
  • Annika Perosh (Year 8) – ‘It was my first competition, and I learnt a lot of new skills that I can use every day.’
  • Evie Briers (Year 8) – ‘We have a great time, and it helps give me confidence in other activities too.’
  • April Cookson (Year 8) – ‘Theatresports is such a fun experience and helps boost your confidence.’
  • Rosy Nichols (Year 7) – ‘Through Theatresports I’ve met new people and become a better actress.’
