From the Principal

Farewell Year 12

This week has been a whirlwind of Year 12 farewells and celebrations as the Class of 2022 graduated from MLC School. I would like to thank every student for her contribution to the school during their time with us.

Our day of celebration started with the unveiling of the pavers for the graduating class, followed shortly after by a magnificent Valedictory Service and Assembly which saw Potts Hall overflowing with guests. Last night, students, staff and families danced the night away at the Valedictory Dinner.

Thank you to everyone who attended the events, it has been a fabulous week. All the best to the members of our graduating class as they prepare for their final exams.

Appointment of Deputy Principal and the Head of Senior School

Following a national search which attracted a very strong field of applicants for both roles, it gives me great pleasure to introduce our new Deputy Principal and our new Head of Senior School, both of whom will take up their appointments at the start of Term 1 2023.

Melissa Boyd – Deputy Principal

Melissa is currently a member of the Executive Team and Head of Secondary-Wellbeing at Pymble Ladies’ College where she leads the strategic direction of the Secondary School of over 1500 students. Her responsibilities include student academic care, wellbeing programs, student leadership and house structure. She has held several previous leadership positions including Head and Deputy Head of Upper School, Head of Department PDHPE Years 3-12, as well as seven years of experience as a Year Coordinator in Independent, Catholic and Government Schools. Melissa was an excellence awardee and finalist in the 2022 Educator awards for the best School Wellbeing Program in Australia.

Joanna Graffen – Head of Senior School

Joanna is currently Director of Day School at St Catherine’s School Waverley, where she has oversight of approximately 750 girls from Year 7 to Year 12. She studied law out of school and became a solicitor before moving overseas, where she studied education before teaching at the Australian International School in Hong Kong. Following this international experience, Joanna moved back to Australia and took up a teaching role at St Catherine’s School. After being appointed as a teacher at St Catherine’s, Joanna was promoted to Year 12 Coordinator and then to her current role as Director of Day School. Joanna continues to teach Legal Studies for which she is an HSC marker and has also taught History, Business Studies, Geography and Commerce.

Thank you for your support again this term.

Farewell to Frances Booth

Today is Deputy Principal Frances Booth’s last day at MLC School. Frances will shortly take up the Principalship at Korowa Anglican Girls’ School in Melbourne and we wish her all the best.

Frances will be fondly remembered for her dedication to our students and her willingness to listen and respond to their suggestions. It is through her efforts that, in response to student feedback, school pants have been introduced as part of the winter uniform.

Linda Emms will take on the role of Acting Deputy Principal and Head of Senior School for Term 4.

From the Head of Junior School

It has been a week of mixed emotions at MLC School this week. We said ‘so long, farewell’ to our Year 12 students and wish them well. Our very excited Kindergarten girls sang So Long, Farewell from the The Sound of Music to our Year 12 girls at their final assembly. I do not think there was a dry eye amongst the graduating class. There was another touching moment when the senior girls who have attended MLC School since Pre-Kindergarten or Kindergarten received a farewell card from our youngest students who created a portrait of the big girls! We wish our Year 12 students the very best for their approaching final exams next term.

We also said farewell to our Deputy Principal, Frances Booth. The Kindergarten girls surprised Frances with another rendition of So Long, Farewell with many of the Junior School girls and staff. We wish Frances the very best as she commences her new role as Principal at Korowa Anglican Girls School in Melbourne.

We had many parents onsite this week. Along with Year 12 and Year 6 , Year 3 and Year 1 parents also visited our school for their Celebrations of Learning. Thank you, parents, for taking time to share the importance of learning and show the value of learning here at MLC School.

Year 6 Showcase

It was a very significant and successful event on Monday evening for Year 6 girls as they hosted their annual ‘Showcase’. This evening is an opportunity for each girl to display their skills in chosen area to research as well as share their achievements in other subjects. It was wonderful to see all our Year 6 parents participating, interviewing the girls about their area of study.  Please read all about the Showcase here.

Baby News

Claudia Catania and her husband are very pleased to announce the arrival of their baby boy, Julian Joseph on Tuesday 6 September 2022. He weighed 3.085kgs and 51cm in length. Mother and baby are doing well.

From the Deputy Head of Junior School – Wellbeing

Are you looking forward to the School Holidays?

“I’m bored! Can we do something?”

Sound familiar? The school holidays are upon us again. As parents, you probably either love them or don’t look forward to them. But the holidays are vitally important!

At MLC School the learning day is long. Add onto that any co-curricular activities your daughter does and the day can be extra-long. On top of this, our lives are often tightly scheduled. So the holidays are an opportunity for the kids to have a break.

The school holidays are a time to relax and switch off. This is good for their brains. It is also good for their physical and mental health.

Time for the family. Going away or having nice experiences together builds connections and memories. Children won’t remember the day you got a raise or how clean the house is, but they will remember the day you helped them catch a fish or when they saw a movie together.

Catching up with friends can be a fun time for children and the holidays are a good time to make those playdates. Spending times with friends can be beneficial as they form connections, build their network and practise social skills.

Holidays can provide an opportunity for children to try or learn things not taught at school. Learning beyond an academic education is something we do well at MLC School, but so much can be experienced during the holiday break. Engaging your mind in a new way is fantastic for your brain.

Boredom can be a good thing. It is often a precursor to creativity. It teaches children to occupy themselves and not rely on others (or electronic devices) for entertainment.

Translated from a Chinese saying: “To rest is to prepare for a longer journey.” Your daughters need to recharge their mental batteries so they can start the term stronger and with more drive. So enjoy the opportunities the holidays provide.

HOLIDAY CHALLENGE: Get Caught Reading

In an effort to continue promoting reading throughout the holidays I would encourage students to get caught reading. Take a photo of you reading this holiday and send to Mrs Gilroy at jgilroy@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au. All students who enter go into the draw for a book prize.

Thank you!

To all those parents who promoted reading this term, thank you. Whether you read with your daughter or discussed her reading with her. Perhaps you added your daughter’s PRC books online, or came in and helped distribute Book Club. To those who gave generously in support of the Book Fair and to those who gave their time to assist with both the Book Fair and Book Swap, THANK YOU.

Your support of reading and the initiatives promoted through library help encourage our girls to read, which we all know is key to making us smarter, happier and healthier. If you need any convincing of that, research can be found here. We are so lucky to have your support.

Happy reading this holiday.

Can you imagine a world without discrimination? – Year 6 Showcase

The Year 6 students have been busy this term preparing for Showcase! Our Collaborative Learning Project (CLP) unit this term was called ‘Inclusion Over Time’, where we investigated diverse groups that make up Australian communities, the ways in which they have experienced discrimination over time and how we can create a more positive and inclusive future. These groups included women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disabilities, refugees and migrants and the LGBTQIA+ community. Each student then chose one of these groups, created three inquiry questions to focus their research around and then set to work becoming experts in this topic.

After a month of preparation, on Monday 12 September 2022, the Year 6 families were welcomed into the Year 6 Centre to see and interact with the incredible Showcase stalls. Creativity, innovation and lively discussion filled the room as students shared their knowledge through websites, videos, podcasts, games, infographics, interviews, picture books, models, posters and much more! The students also performed a song from their upcoming musical, some persuasive speeches and a variety of tasks from their specialist classes. The evening was enjoyed by all!

More photos will be shared on the MLC School Facebook page shortly.

Spotlight on Art

We are pleased to share two collaborative artworks created by our Junior School artists.

Aerial Beachscape Series – Year 3

Year 3’s Collaborative Beachscape Series is proudly on display in the Junior School Reception. This series captures the joy, tranquillity and sometimes danger of our beautiful Australian beaches. It was made with diluted painter’s ink, acrylic paint and paper collage elements. Each student had a turn to paint their class’s canvas using a variety of techniques as well as create some paper collage elements. There are so many funny, sweet and interesting details on each canvas, including a turtle family, some cheeky crabs and an excited dog bulldozing over a sunbathing woman. Such care and enjoyment went into creating this series. Well done, Year 3!

Plastic Jellyfish Installation – Pre-Kindergarten

This term, our Pre-K artists have been exploring sustainability in art, particularly how artists use ‘rubbish’ to create their artworks and explore themes related to the importance of sustainability. They created a collaborative sculpture of a jellyfish made entirely of upcycled plastic pieces. Our discussions centred on how we as artists have repurposed this ‘rubbish’, given it a new meaning and created something that makes people stop and take notice. The message ‘SICK OF PLASTIC’ refers to our own attitude towards plastic as well as how plastic in our beautiful oceans is making sea life sick. Pre-K artists enjoyed creating their collaborative sculpture as well as installing it on the Junior School playground for all to see and appreciate. Well done, Pre-K!

Year 7

Congratulations, we have made it to the end of Term 3! Year 7 have made significant progress across the term in relation to their confidence, organisational skills and pride in themselves and their school. There have been challenges for a number of students as well, but it has been wonderful to see the students helping their peers up when they are down.

Next term we have four weeks of our regular timetable and classes, and then in Week 5 (Monday 7 November 2022) the students ‘rollover’ into Year 8. At the end of Week 4 students will be given their new timetables and new classes. It can be exciting but it is also a big change and some students may feel out of their comfort zone as they have become very accustomed to their current class peers and teachers. We will do our best in Luminary time to help prepare the students for this change and encourage you to do the same at home. Change can be really positive and taking steps into what feels unknown is something we do throughout life.

I want to also congratulate the Year 7 band Token Prawn on their amazing performance at the Battle of the Bands – there was so much crowd support and I can see future Battle of the Bands champions in the making.

Reminder: Next term is summer uniform from Day 1, Tuesday 11 October 2022! I know the students will be looking smart and appropriate when they walk in the gates in Term 4.

Have a safe and restful break, and I look forward to seeing the students and you all in Term 4.

Claire White
Head of Year 7

Year 8

The final week of term was a busy one, with the Year 8 cohort participating in the usual end-of-term activities alongside farewelling their Big Sisters in Year 12 alongside the rest of the Senior School. Monday saw the cohort in Luminary groups reflecting on the term; students shared the enjoyable and positive experiences they had over the last nine weeks. When reflecting on the Immersive Learning Experience, students shared that they enjoyed “meeting and talking to people” they previously hadn’t and “spending time with friends…having the opportunity to eat Kangaroo and Crocodile meat” among many other highlights. The cohort also shared how enjoyable experiences such as the House Athletics Carnival had been for them. The Visual Arts excursion was a popular day for the girls this term, with many reflecting on the fun of being on the rides and at Luna Park with their friends.

On Monday we also had the joy of witnessing the Battle of the Bands. We had two Year 8 groups participate and it was beautiful to see groups of students come together to perform music. Thank you to The Flying Caterpillars for their highly commended performance of 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton and to Barton for their energetic rendition of Disco! in the Panic Room originally performed by Bug Hunter. I was so impressed with both groups’ willingness to rehearse, prepare and perform in front of the Senior School – congratulations to you all!

Spring Break

As we move into the break, I would like to remind all the cohort of the importance of slowing down and taking a break. When we return next term, there will be a busy few weeks before the rollover into Year 9. I want to ensure the girls are relaxed and ready to face the experience of moving into their new subjects, electives and classes next term.

I encourage everyone to maintain healthy routines that feature exercise, eating well, drinking lots of water and sleep. It is also timely to have conversations as a family about device use and not overdoing games, online forums and screen time. These, if left unchecked, can quickly get out of hand across a break.

Summer Uniform

The summer uniform commences from Tuesday 11 October 2022 (Term 4, Week 1). I would like to remind parents and students that if a new summer uniform needs to be purchased, it is a good idea to investigate that in the coming week. Please note, pants are only available as a part of the Winter uniform and are not to be worn across Term 4.

A reminder that nail polish, fake lashes, additional piercings and make-up will not be tolerated here at school. Hair needs to remain of a natural colour and should not be worn in either a claw clip or large coloured scrunchies.

It will also be worthwhile to encourage your child to spend a little time with black shoe polish on their shoes before they return in October.

Parents, your support with this across the upcoming break is most appreciated.

Congratulations Year 8 on all your efforts and enthusiasm for the new this term, it is most appreciated. I wish you all a safe, fun break from school and look forward to seeing you all back in Term 4!

Bridget Kovats
Head of Year 8

Year 9

What a week!

I thought this week, pictures of the cohort to celebrating the last week of Term 3 was a great way to share with you what we were up to!

However, I would like to say on behalf of Year 9, a fond and most sincere farewell to Year 12. Good Luck Year 12 we have looked up to you as our senior leaders, we are proud of your achievements and we wish you every success during exams and with your exciting new adventures outside the MLC School gates.

Have a wonderful holiday break! Stay safe and I look forward to seeing you all return in Senior summer uniform when you return for Term 4 on Tuesday 11 October 2022.

Year 10

Year 10

This has been a week of community at school, and a real treat to celebrate our graduating Class of 2022 together as a school. I have encouraged our Year group to look at the example that has been set for them, and to feel inspired by the tremendous group of students that have led the School with real care and dignity. We will miss them and wish them all the best for the coming months and the years ahead.

There has been a palpable sense of relief for Year 10, who have now completed their assessments and wound up their academics before moving into Year 11 courses next term. The first four weeks of term will be spent mainly on immersion, with some regular classes still taking place. Students will be working on skills that will support them for their Senior Years studies and should treat these lessons as a valuable opportunity to learn.

As mentioned last week, Term 4 will see an increased focus on the standard of student uniform. The uniform sets the tone for how students conduct themselves and approach their learning and their day. Jewellery will be an area of focus and students can expect any excess jewellery to be confiscated on the spot to be returned at the end of the week. The students should not return to School wearing false eyelashes or nails and should be aware that hair should be tied back with a hair tie or ribbon in school colours only. No claw clips. Year 10 are more than aware of the requirements and so there really are no excuses. A reminder that pants are part of the winter uniform and are therefore not to be worn in Term 4 and Term 1.

We were low on numbers for our final Year meeting of the term, but I did let the cohort know how proud I am of what they have achieved this year to date and how much I enjoy working with them. I often say that Heads of Year have the best job in the school, it is working with your daughters that makes it so.

I hope all our Year 10 superstars have a good rest over the break and return ready for the challenge of Year 11. I look forward to seeing everyone return for Term 4 on Tuesday 11 October 2022.

Fiona Pow
Head of Year 10

Year 11

We had a special week full of Year 12 farewells and a farewell for Frances Booth, Deputy Principal and Head of Senior School.

On Wednesday, Year 12 had their Final Assembly and our 2023 House Captains received their badges from the 2022 House Captains as well as presenting the outgoing House Captains with flowers. At the Year 12 Valedictory Service on Thursday, the 2023 School Captains received their badges. After the service the Year 12 students walked through a whole school guard of honour.

At our Year group meeting on Thursday we talked about the best way to treat our non-teaching staff in dealings with them when they disagree with the rules, with particular attention on the Nurses and café staff. We hope that in a year’s time when the cohort leaves MLC School that they have learnt to treat everyone with respect and compassion.

We also discussed the Year 12 Leadership Retreat. Thank you to those that have already completed the online medical forms and provided consent for the retreat.

Uniform Reminders

The Summer uniform will begin on the first day of Term 4, Tuesday 11 October 2022. The minor changes for Senior students are

  • Short navy socks
  • No School pants as they are part of the Winter uniform only

Next term there will be a sharper focus across the School on uniform. Could we ask for your support with the following items in particular:

  • Hair is tidy, pulled back with navy or tri-coloured school colours only and of a natural colour. Claw clips are not allowed.
  • Nail lacquer is not allowed.
  • Excessive make-up which also includes eye-lash extensions is not allowed.
  • The only piercings allowed are one plain silver or gold stud in the lobe of each ear.

Students have been warned that sentimental or expensive jewellery could be confiscated and as should not be brought to school.

These holidays will be the last opportunity to have a good rest before taking on Year 12. Some students will be catching up and reviewing work as well, but the students do deserve some relaxation.

I wish all families a relaxing break and a time of connection with one another.

If you have any queries or concerns, I can be reached via email arenwick@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au and my direct line 02 8741 3278.

Year 12

Congratulations to Year 12 2022 on reaching this milestone in their life. I first have to acknowledge the support of the Year 12 Luminaries and of Penny Hewett, who mentored our group from Year 7 to Year 9. You were very lucky to have had such great support at the beginning of your life in the Middle Years.

It has been a privilege to be on the senior journey with you. By the end of Year 10 you had started the transition process out of MLC School and into a new phase of your life – you just didn’t quite realise it yet. You built friendships for life, created great bonds with your teachers as mentors, worked hard, had fun and planned the next steps to your future.

Synchronised swimming for Year 12 is a special MLC School tradition. I had never really thought of it as a metaphor for life until the Swimming Carnival this year – you are given a task you’re not sure about, you jump in the deep end, flail around a bit, complain and then you find your tribe, accept the task, commit to the process and despite that, you find yourself enjoying something you never imagined you would. Hopefully you win but that isn’t really the point. The point is the connections you have made with each other and the lessons you have learnt about yourself. My greatest wish is that you stay in touch with each other as much as your busy lives will allow – wherever you are.

The disruptions of the last two years are a part of your story now and you should look back on that time with pride and the knowledge that you got through it together and as a result, did not take your time with each other for granted. With your wonderful leadership team, led by Anna Gough, you made everything ‘count’. The plays, exhibitions, examinations, recitals and sporting success are a testament to the fact that you refused to let the pandemic affect your life in Year 12.

Use your talents and gifts to support your communities and go out into the world to make it a better place for everyone. I have no doubt that the challenges of the future will be faced with confidence with your ingenuity, creativity and collaboration. In our Year group we have so many talented students – writers, musicians, performers, artists, scientists, carers and academics – all of you with the ability to take the challenge and the opportunity to lead, to care and to protect your planet, your family and friends. The world needs young people of vision and insight and you are the ones to do it.

Finally, as a parent of a Year 12 student this year myself, I wish our parent community all the best and thank you for placing your daughters in our care.

To Year 12, for the last time – take care.

Sharon Connolly
Head of Year 12

Careers Update

Careers Update

This is a bumper article for you to consolidate all the information we have been delivering throughout the year.

We have discussed Early Entry Schemes with Year 12 students and are very happy to announce that many of our students have already received one or more early offers with many anticipating an offer in the next round. While most have now closed there are still some open:

Early bird applications closing Friday 30 September 2022

While many students have already applied through Early Admission Schemes, the Main Round or Early bird applications round closes at midnight on Friday 30 September 2022, after which UAC’s processing charge increases.

You can submit an application to any course and change your preferences as many times as you like, for free. Year 12 applicants can also ‘commit to pay’ using BPAY. Payment must be made, however, in order to have their application assessed and receive an offer.

Preferences by way of clarification, you can have up to five preferences however you will only receive one offer, which is the first preference which you are eligible for. Therefore, you must ensure that the courses are listed in order of what you most want, remembering that adjustment factors can influence your eligibility.

Educational Access Scheme

The Educational Access Scheme is for students whose studies were negatively affected as a result of circumstances beyond their control or choosing.

It is applied for via the student’s online UAC application. Students are to upload their applications and supporting documentation to their online account.

Whilst the application isn’t due to UAC until Tuesday 22 November 2022, we will require a copy of the application by Monday 31 October 2022 to allow time for the School to support the application and complete the Educational Impact Statement. We send this statement directly to UAC.

If you have any questions about EAS, please contact Jo Cilia, Head of Careers and Academic Advising.

Schools Recommendation Scheme closing Monday 19 September 2022

Student applications for SRS close at midnight on Monday 19 September 2022. School ratings close at midnight on Tuesday 4 October 2022 and the first SRS offers will be released on Friday 11 November 2022.

If you are going to apply through this scheme please do so asap so that we can do the school rating.

UAC PINs

If students are having problems logging in to their UAC application, the quickest and easiest way for them to get help is to call UAC Customer Service on (02) 9752 0200, 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. They don’t reply to email or social requests for login details as they need to identify the sender before giving out this information.

Important Sports Procedures – Absences and Wet Weather

Do not miss any important sports information! Please make sure you check Canvas messages, emails, Facebook AND the Sports Update in the newsletter. The Sports Update always contains fixtures and registration information so you should never miss a registration.

Absences from Sport

What to Do When You Are Not Able to Make Training or a Game

On the rare occasions that it may be necessary for a player to miss training or a competition, please follow these instructions.

  • If the inability to attend is known in advance – a written explanation (email) from the player’s parent/carer is to be given to the coach and Sports department in advance. This notice should be given as early as possible.
  • If the player is absent from school on the day of training or on competition day – the player’s parent/carer is asked to advise the coach and Sports department of their daughter’s absence from training or the game.
  • Do not ask your friends or teammates to give your coach the message.
  • Do give as much notice as possible.
  • If there is a clash with another sport or school event, please speak with the Sports department to determine which game/event you should attend.

Please note: Continued failure to attend training or competitions without a timely written explanation is unacceptable and may jeopardise the player’s continued involvement in sport.

A member of the Sports department will contact parents/carers of students whose non-attendance at training or games is not notified in the correct manner.

Pockets are only awarded to students who have attended at least 80% of training and games.

Wet Weather

What do I do if it is wet weather?
While on most occasions we would not cancel training for wet weather, cancellations may occur if rain is too heavy to train in or weather conditions deem it unsafe. Additionally, due to safe distancing measures and government guidelines, we may be required to cancel training when we cannot accommodate students safely in an indoor space.

  • Morning Training – The decision to cancel any morning training sessions will be made by 8pm the night before training.
  • After School Training – The decision to cancel any after school training sessions will be made by 1pm on the day of training.

Wet weather cancellations will be posted on the MLC School Sport Facebook Page, followed by an email. No Facebook post or email means that activities will still go ahead.

Saturday Sport
If you are playing an IPSHA Sport, please visit the IPSHA Wet Weather site here. Once on the site, select your venue and there will be a notification if your venue is closed. IPSHA normally make a decision by 7am.

If you are playing an IGSA Sport, visit https://igsasport.spawtz.com/Leagues/VenueStatus. The IGSA website will let you know if your venue is closed or open.

When possible, we will also post the cancellations on our Sport Facebook page.

On all occasions, it is the individuals’ responsibility to check the wet weather information. The Sports department, coaches and managers are not always in a position to relay any game cancellations.

Junior School Public Speaking Competition Update

Ready, lights, action. Finally, a live public speaking event. After two years of COVID-19 restrictions the girls were finally able to perform in front of a live audience. Students in Year 3 to Year 5 competed in the House Public Speaking Competition. Every girl had the opportunity to present a speech. Eventually, one student from each House was selected to perform in the House Public Speaking final. Last week, 12 girls presented their speeches. Nervous participants waited their turn and then breathed deeply, took their position, and presented their speech.  The two adjudicators, Chloe Jing (Debating and Public Captain for 2023) and Wayne Symes from the English Department, had a difficult time choosing the best presentation. Finally, the winners were announced.

Year 3
Winner: Zara Pandher (Leawarra)

Year 4
Winner: Mariette Karam (Booralee)

Year 5
Winner: Ariahna Giann (Booralee)

Sofia Tzouganatos (Year 6)

Year 6 also held their own Public Speaking Competition. Natalie Hird, Deputy Head of Junior School – Academic, had the unenviable job of judging the speakers. Congratulation to Sofia Tzouganatos (Year 6) for winning the Year 6 Public Speaking Competition.

Both Sofia and Ariahna will represent MLC School at the IPSHA Public Speaking Competition to be held next term.

End of Term Debating Update

End of Term Debating Update

The end of Term 3 marks the conclusion of official competition debating for 2022. Many of our debaters have spent three terms training hard and competing every week in debates. MLC School came top overall in the Friday Evening Debating (FED) competition, third overall in the Independent Schools Debating Association (ISDA) and first in the Archdale competition. We have six trophies to show for our efforts and it has been MLC School’s most successful year for quite a while.

Next term we will be running a friendly interschool debating competition in the British Parliamentary style of debating. Students can register to join in teams of two and the tournament will run every Wednesday afternoon starting Term 4, Week 2 (week commencing Monday 17 October 2022). Any student is welcome to join in this activity, and should email me if they would like more information about the tournament and the cost.

Register here

The BP tournament is also an opportunity for debaters to maintain their skills in preparation for our debating trials for the 2023 Year 8 to Year 12 teams. We are also busy preparing for the igsa Festival of Speech which will run live at Pymble Ladies College from 21–22 October 2022. This final official activity for the year will include a full program of events including debating, drama, poetry, and public speaking.

Speech & Drama Studio Programs Wrapped for Term 3

What an eventful term for the Speech and Drama Studio. We are so proud of each of our students for their enthusiasm and creativity and it was wonderful to see all students gaining and increasing their vocal, speaking and performance skills.

Pre-K to Year 2 Round Square Groups

Our Round Square characters for Term 3 were Communication Cara, Diversity Dani and Self-aware Simba. Students have continued to explore a range of speech and drama activities focused on strengthening their non-verbal and verbal communication skills. This has assisted them in the creation and performance of their own version of the Round Square characters. Through differentiated poetry and prose pieces students have begun identifying characters in scripts, incorporating performance dynamics and engaging an audience. Students have worked on cultivating and strengthening their communication and presentation skills through a variety of impromptu and public speaking tasks that relate to the Round Square discoveries.

We have seen such a growth in performance and speaking skills, focus and teamwork throughout the term and are so proud of the way the girls have embraced the Round Square characters and values.

Speech and Drama ASCA and Trinity Examinations

Students have been busy working towards their Speech and Drama Australian Speech Communication Association (ASCA) and Trinity examinations in acting/performance or public speaking /communication skills. Exams are a wonderful opportunity for students to apply the skills they are developing in class and mark students’ achievements at each stage. This process is extremely beneficial allowing self-expression by bringing their own ideas and choices into the exams. 112 Speech and Drama students from Year 3 to Year 5 and private and duo Year 1 and Year 2 students participated in their ASCA examination. Year 6 to Year 11 students will be completing their exam in Term 4, Week 7 (week commencing Monday 21 November 2022.

ASCA and Trinity are highly respected examining bodies, and I have had many years affiliation with both. ASCA is an Australian Examining Board and Trinity College of London is an International Examining Board. ASCA exams are face to face exams while Trinity exams are currently via digital submission or on zoom.

Four Speech and Drama students will represent MLC School in the junior and senior poetry and readings sections at the igsa Festival of Speech in October.

Sydney Eisteddfod

A number of students performed in the Sydney Eisteddfod this term which marked the end of the Eisteddfod season and added to our 125 students who represented MLC School at the Inner West, Parramatta and Sydney Eisteddfods.

Theatresports Club

MLC School’s Theatresports Club, run by The Speech and Drama Studio and coached by Taylor Buoro, have enjoyed developing their improvisational skills this term through a variety of theatresports games that encourage spontaneity, quick thinking and decision making, teamwork, and of course lots of fun and laughter. Five students represented MLC School in Impro Australia’s School’s Theatresports Challenge. The girls performed brilliantly and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We are looking forward to our intermediate team performing early in Term 4. Four Theatresports students will represent MLC school in the Improv Drama section at the igsa Festival of Speech in October.

Script Writer’s Club

The Script Writer’s Club, run by The Speech and Drama Studio and coached by Zuzana Fort, have been exploring and developing the techniques of script writing. They have been learning about different styles and genres of writing and writing their own scripts focussing on characters, storyline, plot and structure. The best part is sharing their scripts and even acting them out.

Acting for Camera

The Acting for Camera class on Friday afternoons and private acting for camera students have been discovering their casting types, working on monologues and scene work, and learning techniques for self-taping and auditioning. Students are gaining an understanding of the film industry and next term will be assisted with creating acting profiles and gaining professional acting work. As professional actors, directors, writers and producers we are able to offer first-hand knowledge and current practises of our ever-changing film and television industry. It is wonderful to see some of our students already booking work! Well done girls! Acting for Camera classes are not only for students wanting to learn about screen acting, but for all students to develop technique for speaking and presenting on camera which is an essential tool in the world we are living where online communication is vital.

Musical Theatre

Our Musical Theatre stars have been working on scenes from some of the most popular Musicals such as Matilda the Musical, Mary Poppins, Hamilton, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, In the Heights, Westside Story, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, My Fair Lady, etc. Students work equally on all three areas – dance, singing and acting. We are looking forward to presenting a showcase of our Musical Theatre students’ work in Term 4.

We are so proud of the wonderful work we have seen this term from all our students and are excited to see continued development of skills and growth in confidence next term. Thank you to parents for all your support and for the wonderful feedback we receive.

From the Speech & Drama Studio team, we wish all MLC School students a fabulous and relaxing holiday.

Speech and Drama Studio Director

Australian Speech Communication Association (ASCA) Examinations

Congratulations to our 112 Speech and Drama students from Year 3 to Year 5 and private and duo Year 1 and Year 2 students who participated in their Australian Speech Communication Association (ASCA) examination over four days which wrapped on Wednesday 14 September 2022.

The ASCA Examiners, Ms Bron Lim and Mrs Jill Tucker, were so impressed by the high standard and variety of performances including group devised and published scenes, monologues, duologues, prepared speeches, impromptu speeches, sight reading, demonstrations, poetry, prose, choral speaking, mime, storytelling, readers theatre and improvisation. We are so proud of all our students for the hard work and dedication they put into their exam preparation. It was wonderful to see everyone having fun and enjoying the exam experience.

Our Year 6 to Year 12 students have been busy preparing for their ASCA and Trinity exam in Term 4.

Venue:  MLC School Drama Theatre
Cast Cost: Kindergarten to Year 6 $480
Crew Cost: Year 7 to Year 12 $290

Students gain confidence and have lots of fun as they are taken through a rehearsal process including acting, singing, movement and dance to produce a production in five days. Students experience what it is like to be a part of a production team whether it be on or off the stage from start to finish. At the end of the five days students perform the production to family and friends.

An enormous increase in confidence and performance skills can be seen throughout the week. The productions provide a wonderful opportunity for students to form friendships with students in different year levels and allow every student to feel like a star!

The holiday productions are open to external students as well. Siblings, cousins, friends are welcome.
