Year 2 hosted the Kindergarten to Year 5 assembly this week – it was a delight and such a creative way to demonstrate their learning. Congratulations to all involved. At the same time, Year 6 joined the Senior School at the House Athletics Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park.

Celebrations of Learning

This week, Pre-Kindergarten hosted their Celebrations of Learning. My thanks to all the parents and carers who generously made time available to visit their daughter’s studio. It was a delight to see how much joy these celebrations brought to the Pre-Kindergarten girls and the big people too! Click here to view the full story in this newsletter.

Father’s Day Celebrations

It has been a wonderful week of celebrations for our dads, granddads, uncles, and other significant male role models. It was wonderful to see so many attending MLC School’s Father’s Day breakfast.

Thanks to all our volunteers for the Father’s Day raffle and stall, and to our families who purchased raffle tickets.

Following the breakfast was the Junior School Father’s Day Paper Planes event. What fun! This was a whole Junior School event, and there was so much joy as each family created their own plane and competed for their School House.

Congratulations to the winning team who won the paper plane trophy – LEAWARRA!

Parent voice – Diversity, Inclusivity and Belonging

With our School Value of Respect in focus this term, we are particularly concentrating on our diverse community and how we can be inclusive, where every single student feels they belong.

We want to understand and respect our differences because everyone in our School matters and belongs.

In 1993, Carol Goodenow and Kathleen Grady defined school belonging as ‘the extent to which children feel individually welcomed, respected, included, and supported by others within the school social environment’.

This week some parents took up the invitation to join me for morning tea to discuss how the Junior School cultivates a culture of diversity and inclusivity. Hearing the perspective of parents adds to the discussion staff have had and the pastoral care lessons taught this term.

I thank the parents who were able to be part of this discussion. Their voice, perspective and ideas will be taken forward into future planning.

Next steps include talking to student focus groups to get the perspectives of students from Year 3–Year 6.

Ideas from all groups will be considered to plan for the Junior School to continue to be inclusive and build a sense of belonging for all those in our community.

Junior School ‘Stay & Play’ Information

Junior School ‘Stay & Play’ Information

Friday 19 September 2025

Each year, on the last day of Term 3, the Junior School Student Council (JSSC) hosts Stay & Play, an event run by the students, for the students! Year 3 to Year 5 host stalls selling a variety of food, goods and fun activities to raise money to go towards purchasing equipment and resources for the students. This year we have already purchased wet weather games/activity boxes for each class and play/sport equipment for lunchtimes.

Who attends Stay & Play?

  • Pre Kindergarten students are welcome to attend but MUST be accompanied by a parent or carer. If your daughter is at school on Friday 19 September 2025, please come to Reception at 1.30pm to collect your daughter. If your daughter does not attend school on Friday but you would like to attend Stay & Play, please arrive at 1.30pm and enter via the Red Carpet.

  • Kindergarten to Year 5 students.

  • Parents and carers of students in Kindergarten to Year 5 are most welcome to attend, please enter via the Red Carpet. You may take your daughter home early after seeing your daughter’s class teacher.

What can the girls purchase at Stay & Play?
There will be a variety of food and goods to purchase and activities to join.

What is the cost?
Most items and activities are between $2 and $8. This year cards with 10 x squares, with a square worth $1, will be used and must be pre-purchased – cash will not be accepted at the stalls. This is more environmentally friendly.

What should my daughter wear?
So the girls can be comfortable while enjoying the activities during Stay & Play, students are permitted to wear their MLC School sports uniform.

When is Stay & Play?

Friday 19 September 2025 – 1.30pm to 2.50pm. School will conclude at the normal finish time.

Where is Stay & Play?
Stay & Play will take place at various locations around the Junior School Campus.

How much money will my daughter need?
It is recommended that your daughter purchases cards worth $30 – $50 (that is three to five cards). When purchasing something at Stay & Play the girls will have their card stamped – the number of squares equal to the cost.

How may my daughter pay for items or activities?

  1. The cards can be pre-purchased through the MLC School payment pages with each card worth $10. You can buy up to five cards or $50. See the button below to purchase cards.

  2. The cards will be provided to your daughter at the commencement of Stay & Play.

  3. Additional cards can be purchased on the day (cash and EFTPOS accepted) from the Red Carpet.

  4. Please note: All money raised through Stay & Play will be donated, so refunds for unused tokens will not be given at the end of the event.

Toy Drive for Stay & Play

Spring is the perfect time for some Spring Cleaning! As you tidy up, if you come across any unused, undamaged, and clean toys, please consider bringing them to your daughter’s class. These toys will be collected as part of the toy drive for Stay & Play, scheduled for the last day of Term 3. We will be collecting toys during Week 8 (Monday 8 September 2025).

Click here for the flyer from our Environment Captains.

We look forward to concluding Term 3 with an enjoyable Stay & Play event.

Pre-Kindergarten Celebration of Learning

Pre-Kindergarten Celebration of Learning

On Wednesday morning, the Pre-Kindergarten students welcomed their families for their second Celebration of Learning this year. The students were excited to share their learning in Music with Sophie Grattan-Smith, STEM with Bede Schofield and Marie Cassar and with the Pre-Kindergarten teachers in our Studio. The ‘Blue Bots’ were such fun and quite challenging to manoeuvre.

We enjoyed some songs and dances in the Music Studio. In our Pre-Kindergarten studio, the students shared our books and paintings from our NELI Language Program, our Learning Portfolios and completed some puzzles and numeracy tasks.

Thank you to all parents and family members who attended the morning.

Year 7 Experience Day

The Year 7 Experience Day was all about helping our incoming Year 7 2026 students get a feel for life at our school. This was a follow up to our Excitement Day for our MLC School Year 6 students that happened earlier in the term.

The day was carefully planned so that the students could feel welcome in their new school, try out different classes, meet teachers, and make new friends in a welcoming setting.

The students experienced Luminary circles with Alistair Roland, Head of Students – Year 7 to Year 9, Amy Murphy, Fiona Pow, Head of Students – Year 10 to Year 12 and Andrew Taylor, Deputy Head of Senior School – Wellbeing; hieroglyphics in History with Vicky Zinnopoulos, Ashleigh Leck and Katie Clarke, relays in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) with Sarah Papachristoforou, Head of Department – PDHPE, Andrew Simos, Consultant – Professional Learning, PDHPE and Performance and Emily Osbourne. A murder mystery and Mathematics Scrabble – Mabble! in Mathematics with Eugenie Tan, Monica Lee and Stavroula Koulouris and singing and dancing with Assistant Head of Languages, Natasha Collins, Julian Hanuna, Heidy Frew and Helena Wang culminating with a zooper dooper (who knew orange was the least popular flavour?!)  It really was a fabulous experience for our incoming Year 7s, the Class of 2031.

Senior School House Athletics carnival

This year’s Senior School House Athletics Carnival was an explosion of House Spirit, colour, and heart that brought our whole School community together in a celebration of friendly rivalry and teamwork. My favourite part as always was the cheer-off!

Laughter, encouragement and determination (including a Macarena dance off and an aerobics challenge) filled the air as each house strove for victory – not just in points, but in camaraderie and enthusiasm. The carnival wasn’t just about speed or strength; it was about uplifting one another, embracing the spirit of competition, and making memories that will last long after the track has cleared. The energy, joy, and togetherness on display truly embodied what it means to be part of our School.

Year 7

Year 7

As I write this, preparations and excitement for the Senior School House Athletics Carnival are in full swing! I look forward to updating you in next week’s newsletter about how amazing Year 7 were, how fast they ran, how high they jumped and how much they enjoyed the day! We also have Battle of the Bands today, another smashing day in the MLC School calendar!

This week Year 7 had their Chapel with the theme Seasons of Creation. Saumya Pulikkal, Fedra Nikolakopoulos, Chloe Nunn, Annaliese Bott, Susie Wang, Georgia Sutton and Lavinia Xu all spoke wonderfully and it was a lovely service. Year 7 also had some time in Academic Care to prepare for upcoming assessments. It is a busy part of the term and I encourage you to check in with your daughter on her planning, preparation and expectations around assessments. If you have questions about a task, please do not hesitate to reach out to the class teacher.

Have a wonderful weekend and please reach out to your daughter’s Luminary or teachers if you have any questions.

Year 7 PDHPE – Safety Comes First!

Year 7 PDHPE – Safety Comes First!

This term in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE), Year 7 have been learning their ABC’s….their DRSABCD’s!

In the Safety Comes First unit, Year 7 have been looking at decision making, risk taking and first aid. This has culminated in a different style assessment task where Year 7 received a random first aid scenario and were instructed to show their teacher the correct first aid procedure to identify and manage the issue. Year 7 have come prepared for this task and shown lots of interest in First Aid. Should you ever need assistance with bites, stings, allergies, bandaging or slings, ask your Year 7 child what to do!

Year 8

Year 8

At this time of the term, most students have many assessments. Unsurprisingly, this can be a source of anxiety and stress for many young people. I am aware that the pressure can sometimes feel overwhelming, even for students who are typically resilient and organised.

It is important to remember that every student reacts differently to stress. Some may openly communicate their worries, while others may keep their feelings hidden, trying to manage the pressure alone. This is why your check-ins and support are so crucial. I encourage all parents to find a quiet moment to speak with your child this week. Ask them how they are managing their workload, whether they are feeling confident about their upcoming assessments, and if there is anything that is causing them concern.

If your child is not coping or needs extra support, please don’t hesitate to reach out. The pastoral care team, Luminaries and classroom teachers are all available to assist. Whether it’s helping with time management strategies, finding balance with co-curricular commitments, or providing more specialised wellbeing support, we are here to help every student through this busy period.

Nominations are now open for the Student Representative Council (SRC) for Year 8 students. The SRC plays an important role in representing student voices, organising school-wide initiatives, and leading by example. If your child is passionate about making a difference, enjoys teamwork, and is interested in developing their leadership abilities, I strongly encourage them to consider putting their name forward. Please note that nominations for SRC will close on Friday 5 September 2025.

At the time of writing, our School is in the midst of preparing for the Senior School House Athletics Carnival. This event is one of the highlights of the year, offering students the chance to compete, cheer each other on, and contribute to their House teams. I will provide photos and updates about the carnival next week.

Have a great weekend.

Year 9

Year 9

I’m delighted to share highlights from what was a truly fantastic day at the Senior School House Athletics Carnival on Thursday. Every Year 9 student brought their best energy, costume and House Spirit! I was proud to see so many Year 9 students engaging positively and representing their House with pride.

What stood out most, however, was the way Year 9 demonstrated the MLC School Values across the day. We saw respect in action as students stayed back to help tidy their house areas, compassion as they encouraged friends to try every event (even when nerves crept in) and courage as they cheered passionately for their houses. Many also demonstrated growth, pushing themselves to jump just that little bit higher to clear the high jump bar. Well done Year 9!

Reminder – My Mind Check

My Mind Check – is a new wellbeing initiative that we are implementing this year.

Check-in sessions for students in Year 9 will commence in Week 1 of Term 4.

A reminder to please complete the online consent form here to participate in My Mind Check. Thank you to those parents who have already provided consent.

My Mind Check was developed by youth mental health experts at Macquarie University (Sydney) with input from educators and students across Australia, and meets strict Commonwealth privacy and security standards.

Students will be invited to participate in a 20-minute check-in session here at MLC School, under the supervision of a staff member. They will use a computer or tablet to respond to age-appropriate questions about how they’re feeling and can skip any questions they don’t want to answer.

My Mind Check is not a clinical assessment of mental health, but instead offers insights to help us better understand the wellbeing of each student and our collective school community. We’ll follow up if your daughter reports any areas of need and invite you to explore helpful information and resources at mymindcheck.org.au any time. You may also visit the website to learn more about My Mind Check, or watch this video.

Your support is appreciated. Please reach out to Andrew Taylor, Deputy Head of Senior School – Wellbeing, with any questions.

Year 10

Year 10

It is hard to believe we are nearly at the end of Term 3. Year 10 had a busy start to the week tackling several assessment tasks. They managed their time well, stayed positive, and worked through a demanding schedule with maturity and resilience. I am proud of how they growing as learners. Learning to juggle competing demands is a vital part of their development, and it’s great to see them rising to the challenge.

On Tuesday, we were lucky to have Andrew Taylor, Deputy Head of Senior School – Wellbeing, and a Police Youth Officer speak with Year 10 about online safety, and in particular AI and deepfakes. It was an engaging and important session that highlighted the need for open communication with trusted adults. As parents and carers, maintaining these conversations at home is key to supporting our young people in navigating the digital world safely.

To round off the week, we had the Senior School House Athletics Carnival on Thursday. Year 10s energy, enthusiasm, and support for one another was great to see. Participation in school events help strengthen the bonds within the cohort and provide opportunities for fun and connection beyond the classroom. Well done Year 10!

Year 12

Year 12

Yesterday was the last Athletics Carnival for Year 12 2025. We had a fantastic day with lots of fun activities, beautiful sunshine and friends. Events included the 200m race, shotput, long jump and high jump and great novelty activities. It was so much fun, and the girls cheered each other on each time. Mooramoora House won the contest for perfect attendance. The House Captains did an amazing job working with their Heads of House and Andrew Simos, Heads of House Coordinator, on their themes, outfits and cheers. Being a House Captain is so much hard work behind the scenes, and we can’t thank them enough. Our image this week is but a small example of what the girls got up to.

Academic Care this week focused on final preparation for big events. Conor O’Reilly, Teacher, from the Music Faculty and Charlotte Almond, our new Head of Rowing spoke about pre-event nerves, strategies to work with anxiety and performance and motivation. Conor performed for us and got everyone in a great mood. The Year 12 writing exhibition was a wonderful evening that showcased the best of the English program with poetry and prose. A big thank you goes to the English department for their time and care of the girls.

Attendance continues to be a focal point of our academic program and encouraging Year 12 to make the most of their remaining time with teachers. Please reinforce this with your daughters as coursework continues and revision takes place. Nothing replaces the classroom experience and 1:1 engagement with peers and staff. Luminary and pastoral care time continues, as does assemblies, study periods, Chapel and House time.

If you are concerned about your daughter’s academic progress, please get in contact with their class teacher and for pastoral concerns, please reach out to me on 02 8741 9736 or sconnolly1@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au

Shout out to Year 12

On Monday 8 September, all Year 12 students will receive a special message from our Principal, Lisa Moloney, inviting you to complete the Student Reflection and Exit Survey. This is your chance to share reflections and thoughts on your learning experience, journey, and favourite memories from your time at MLC School. The questionnaire also asks for your permission to include ATARs in our communications or socials.

We truly value your voice, and your feedback will help those students who follow in your footsteps. Thank you for being part of our community – we can’t wait to follow your journey after MLC School.

All Year 12 Parents will also have the opportunity to submit their feedback via an Exit Survey from MLC School. Further information will be sent to you next week.

Kind regards and take care.

From the Principal

In today’s world, the ability to express ideas clearly and confidently is more important than ever – especially for young women. Learning to speak up isn’t just about answering questions in class; it’s about developing the confidence to share opinions, lead discussions, and respectfully stand up for their own rights and the rights of others. Programs such as debating, public speaking, and opportunities to give speeches and present their class learning orally offer invaluable opportunities for girls to build these essential life skills.

MLC School has long been renowned for the quality of its oratory program, and anyone who has had to debate an issue with an MLC School girl will know that she is skilled and persuasive!

On Tuesday night, MLC School hosted the grand finals of the Archdale Debating Competition. Archdale debating is a prestigious inter-school debating competition for girls’ schools in New South Wales. It offers students the opportunity to engage in structured debates on a range of topical issues, helping them develop critical thinking, persuasive speaking, and teamwork skills. The competition is named after Betty Archdale, a prominent educator and advocate for girls’ education, and it encourages participants to articulate their viewpoints confidently while respecting differing perspectives.

24 IGSA (Independent Girls’ Schools Association) schools participate in Archdale Debating, which runs from May to September each year.

MLC School had five teams in the 11 Grand Final debates, more than twice as many as any of the other schools. Our girls competed strongly, just as they have throughout the season and for the second year in a row, we were victorious in taking out the coveted Archdale Shield for the best performing school in the competition.

Such is our reputation that there are apparently rumours circulating that our success is due to us offering generous debating scholarships! Of course, this is not true. Our success is due to the leadership of Dr Andrea Rowe, Oratory Coordinator – Debating, the talent of our coaches (many of whom are former MLC School students) and the commitment and expertise of the students in our debating teams. Congratulations and thank you to all involved.

Speaking in public might seem daunting at first, but it’s a powerful way for young girls to conquer nerves and build self-assurance. Whether presenting to classmates or a larger audience, girls learn to express themselves clearly, use persuasive language, and engage listeners. These experiences nurture confidence that extends far beyond the stage or classroom and will place them in a strong position to shine in interviews, leadership roles, and group projects as they progress through life.

As well as Archdale Debating MLC School competes in the Independent Schools Debating Association (ISDA) Competition and the Friday Evening Debating (FED) Competition and students in Year 5 can take part in Gala Debating Days held by Independent Primary School Heads of Australia (IPSHA).

We have a development program for students who are interested in building their oratory skills and large numbers of students compete in the IGSA Festival of Speech each year. Should your daughter be interested in being involved, I encourage her to contact Dr Andrea Rowe you can learn more about supporting your daughter’s voice in Head of Learning and Teaching, Melissa McMahon’s article here.

Archdale Debaters Secure Overall Shield for 2025

Archdale Debaters Secure Overall Shield for 2025

On Tuesday evening, we had the privilege of hosting the Archdale Grand Final in the Senior Centre. As is tradition, the school that wins the overall shield hosts the following year’s Grand Final. The competition comprises eleven divisions, with participation from twenty-four schools, requiring all eleven debates to be conducted simultaneously during the Grand Final.

The Archdale competition, an annual debating tournament for girls’ schools, commenced in early May. Teams compete in seven preliminary rounds, followed by a series of finals, culminating in the top two schools from each division contesting the September Grand Final. Throughout the tournament, teams accumulate points based on their performance in each round, with the overall champion determined by the highest final tally. Additional points are awarded for reaching and winning divisional grand finals, making the final outcome dependent on the results of these concluding debates.

This year, all MLC School teams delivered outstanding performances, leading the standings after seven rounds. Five MLC School teams advanced to their respective Grand Finals, and their exceptional achievements secured our school the shield for 2025.

The dedication and effort of all sixty members of the MLC School Archdale team have been integral to this success. Our debaters are to be commended for their commitment and rigorous preparation alongside their coaches over the past four months.

For a full report on each of our five Grand Final teams please see the co-curricular section by clicking here.

Round Square Exchange Program – The Opportunity of a Lifetime

Round Square Exchange Program – The Opportunity of a Lifetime

This year marks the exciting return of the MLC School Round Square International Exchange program. Two of our Year 10 students, Lily Smith and Rose Turner, have just returned from an unforgettable five-week exchange at Bridge House School in South Africa. Their incredible journey included immersing themselves in the vibrant culture and enriching school life of Bridge House. We eagerly anticipate welcoming students from Bridge House School to our campus this November.

Next week, we will be inviting two current Year 9 students to apply for an exchange next year with Bridge House School.

Stay tuned for this amazing chance to embark on a life-changing adventure!

‘Lily and I were so fortunate to have the most amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity to go on exchange in South Africa for five weeks. We were greeted by our exchange sisters, families, and school with such a welcoming and warm atmosphere, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in our exchange sister’s lifestyle and culture. We were so lucky to experience school life, including a netball tour, new friends, and $1 cheese toasties! Both of us had the amazing experience of going on safari towards the end of our stay, adding extraordinary memories to our already invaluable stay. I am extremely thankful for this incredible opportunity and would absolutely recommend anyone in the years below us to sign up for such a rare chance at making lifelong friends and memories that will last forever. Both Lily and I are excited to welcome our exchange sisters to MLC School in November!’
Rose Turner (Year 10)

‘Rose and I had the most incredible opportunity to do a South African exchange in Cape Town for the last five weeks. Greeted with signs, smiles and such a welcoming environment, we met our lovely exchange sisters and families who went out of their ways to make sure we felt comfortable and at home. Whilst we were away, we immersed ourselves fully into our exchange partners’ lifestyles, with going to netball camp, participating in all areas of school life and even going on safaris at the end of our stay. My highlights of the trip would have to be the outstanding safari, and all of the hilarious small moments we had on camp like hip-hop routines for a talent show! We were able to learn so much about the different culture and language which was equally invaluable. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity and would thoroughly recommend it to the younger years. I think we can both say we have made lifelong friends and memories that we will always cherish. We look forward to welcoming our exchanges over here in November!’

From the Head of Learning and Teaching – The Power of Words

From the Head of Learning and Teaching – The Power of Words

Margaret Atwood once wrote, ‘A word after a word after a word is power.’ At our School, we see the truth of this every day. From our youngest learners to our Year 12 graduates, we strive to build confidence in our young women to communicate clearly, in both speech and writing. Developing a strong voice is not just an academic skill, it is vital for our girls to flourish as agents of change in the world.

This week, I was privileged to watch our Year 12 Extension English 2 students share their powerful major works. These projects, the culmination of a year of independent composition, took many forms – performance poetry, short stories, critical essays, films, and original poetry collections. Each student spoke candidly about the challenges, joys, and frustrations of the creative process, supported every step of the way by our outstanding English teachers, Joe Pfeiffer and Elizabeth King. What struck me most was the way each girl found her identity in her writing and took ownership of her learning. The passion in the room was palpable.

On the very same day, I was honoured to serve as a judge for the Year 11 Interdisciplinary Collaborative Sciences Project. Teams of students presented their inquiries into topics ranging from the energy consumed by artificial intelligence to the benefits of AI in the health system. They crafted research questions, collected and analysed data, and drew insightful conclusions – all of which had to be communicated to an audience in just four minutes. It was a lesson in clarity, confidence, and precision.

The previous evening, our debaters demonstrated their stunning oratory and rhetorical skills, winning the highly esteemed Archdale Competition. Their ability to listen, think critically, and speak persuasively was inspiring.

Across these experiences, one theme shone through: the power of words. Whether in writing, debate, or scientific inquiry, words are the tools our girls use to shape ideas, connect with others, and create change. Parents can nurture this at every age, by encouraging storytelling in the early years, engaging in conversations about the world, and supporting their daughters to take risks in public speaking and writing.

Atwood reminds us that words build upon one another to create meaning and momentum. We are proud that our girls are learning to harness that power and to use it with confidence, creativity, and courage.

How Parents Can Support Their Daughter’s Voice

  • Encourage storytelling: ask your child to share about their day or invent imaginative stories.
  • Model confidence: let them hear you speak up in everyday contexts.
  • Celebrate effort, not just polish: praise their willingness to express ideas, even when imperfect.
  • Create opportunities: whether it’s reading aloud, presenting at the dinner table, or speaking in community forums, practice builds confidence.
  • Listen deeply: show that their words matter by giving your full attention.

Unfortunately Emma Cook (Year 6) and I had qualified for State Championships but were unable to compete due to injury and illness.

Everyone competed well with Mia (Year 9) placing 4th on bars in Level 7 Division 4, Sophia (Year 10) performing a highly scored vault in Level 7 Division 4, Chantel hitting all of her routines in Level 6 Division 4 and Eloise (Year 6) was crowned the State Champion on Beam and placed 5th Overall in Level 5 Division 4.

Overall everyone had a great competition and should be so proud of themselves and despite being unable to compete which was disappointing I was proud to go watch and support my teammates.

Five MLC School Teams Compete in Archdale Grand Final

Five MLC School Teams Compete in Archdale Grand Final

The Senior Centre was abuzz on Tuesday evening as 22 teams from 14 girls’ schools gathered to contest the Archdale Grand Finals. MLC School was represented by five teams: three in the Shield competition and two in the Invitational competition.

Although the seven preliminary rounds for the Invitational competition were conducted online, the Grand Final took place as a live event. The Junior Year 7 team delivered a commendable performance against an older Year 8 team from Frensham but were ultimately defeated in their final.

  • Carolyn Yang
  • Sahana Ramesh
  • Cayla Mellare
  • Anaahat Kahlon
  • Felicity Kouch

The Intermediate Year 10 team are seasoned Grand Final competitors who previously secured victory in the FED Year 10 division this June, achieved a strong win against PLC Sydney.

  • Lindsay Zeng
  • Chloe Song
  • Rebecca Ho-Bui
  • Josephine Doan
  • Luella Farah
  • Yerina Kang

In the Shield competition, the 7B team participated in a closely contested debate but were narrowly beaten by Pymble.

  • Elsa Liu
  • Lauren Cheng
  • Georgia Sutton
  • Georgia Chiang
  • Ashwini Kanesalingam

Our Juniors team of Year 9 students, having previously won their FED competition division in June, faced Wenona in a close debate and unfortunately did not secure the win this time.

  • Amy Doan
  • Pip McGuire
  • Taylor Lu
  • Ingrid Henderson
  • Caydence Sumantri

The 7A team proposed the affirmative side in a debate against Meriden on the topic, ‘That schools should not provide any awards for individual performance (eg: Most Improved, Most Valuable) in team sports (eg: netball, football, debating).’ In a closely judged contest, they achieved victory and contributed significantly to MLC School securing the overall Shield trophy.

  • Jasmine Luo
  • Abira Sanan
  • Jacqui Zhang
  • Sissi Zheng
  • Lavinia Xu

Congratulations are extended to all 60 Archdale debaters and their coaches for an outstanding debating season. The competition year is not yet over, with 18 teams set to participate in the International Debating Championships (IDC) and additional online competitions against Australian and international teams scheduled for Term 4.

Tournament of Minds 2025: A Weekend of Wit, Wonder, and Whimsy!

Tournament of Minds 2025: A Weekend of Wit, Wonder, and Whimsy!

Last weekend, a number of excited and dedicated students were buzzing with creativity and collaboration as they took on the 2025 Tournament of Minds (ToM) challenge!

The Long Term Challenge saw students dive into four dynamic disciplines – Language and Literature, The Arts, STEM, and Social Sciences – crafting imaginative solutions and bringing them to life through thoughtful scripts and clever dramatisations.

But the excitement didn’t stop there…

In the Spontaneous Challenge, teams had just five minutes to brainstorm and present a unique solution to a surprise question. The energy and nerves were evident as students attempted to showcase quick thinking, teamwork, and out-of-the-box ideas.

Despite the transport challenges of making their way to Randwick on the weekend of the Sydney Marathon, the girls amazed us with their innovation, creativity, and collaborative spirit. Their dedication to the tournament shone through and reflected hours of hard work and organisation.

A huge congratulations to all our ToM participants – your passion and teamwork were truly inspiring.

A special thank you to James Adams – HIgh Potential Learning Leader, Wayne Symes, Kos Pather and Lucy Pero – Teachers, for giving up their Sunday to be judges for the Tournament of Minds East Division. Without your help our teams would not have been able to compete.

We had lots of positive feedback and look forward to competing in ToM in 2026.
