Newsletter | Term 3 Week 6 2024 - 30 August 2024

From the Principal

We have enjoyed another busy and productive week at MLC School with our newly launched parent portal Omnia, generating lots of positive feedback. The project has been a labour of love for our Head of Marketing and Community Relations Michele Dunn and Head of Information Technology (IT) Steve Swarts, Communications and Digital Manager, Judy Lezon, Digital Experience Manager, Melissa Pollett, Business Systems Manager Suriyadeepan Jeyapirakasam, and members of our IT Development Team Supriya Maradana, and Gregory Americanos who have worked on the project for over 12 months. We are thrilled to hear that it is assisting communication and providing you with the information that you need. We will continue to add additional features and information as time progresses.

On Thursday, we welcomed those Year 7 girls who will be new to MLC School next year and their families. Thank you to the Year 6 Parent Ambassadors who took the time to join our new families for morning tea and to welcome them to the School. Having caught up with our prospective students during the day, I can confirm that they had a wonderful time, had made new friends and are beginning to feel at home in their new surrounds. I look forward to welcoming them back on Orientation Day when they will meet the current year 6 students and have further opportunities to prepare for their formal start early next year.

Another highlight of the week has been the return of the MLC School Round Square Exchange Program. This is an exciting opportunity for our Year 8 students to spend time at another Round Square school and offer reciprocal hospitality to the student with whom they are buddied. We have a student from Kinross Wolaroi School in Orange with us this week and will soon be joined by two students from Radford College, Canberra. Thanks to our Round Square Coordinator Xavier Maling and Director of Experiential Learning Sarah Jauncey for their efforts in reinvigorating this program.

And to round out the week, this morning’s Father’s Day breakfast was a wonderful way occasion and a fitting way to acknowledge the important role that men play in the lives of their daughters. Thank you to all the fathers, grandfathers and other family members who joined us. Father’s Day photos will be published on Facebook next week.

Planned visit by Her Majesty Queen Nanasipau’u

I am delighted to share an update on our visit to Tonga and our time at Queen Salote College. We are making excellent progress in establishing a lasting relationship. Next year will be Queen Salote College’s 99th Anniversary. Her Majesty Queen Nanasipau’u and a delegation from the School will visit Sydney in late March to celebrate the anniversary with the extensive Queen Salote Alumni community of NSW and ACT. At that time, we will also host staff from the school as they familiarise themselves with the NSW curriculum and learn more about our approaches to teaching.

I am very pleased to announce that while in Sydney, Her Majesty Queen Nanasipau’u will also visit MLC School. It is a great honour and one that we will look forward to with great excitement. Our connection with the Kingdom of Tonga goes back some way. The first official record of our relationship is recorded in the 1935 edition of Excelsior, in which it is reported that in August 1935, Her Majesty the Queen of Tonga, Queen Salote Tupou III visited MLC School and addressed the student body who showed their appreciation through ‘a great storm of enthusiastic clapping’ and singing the School song for her. I am sure that the welcome that we extend in 2025 will be just as warm and memorable.

Can you help?

As you would be aware, the MLC School community is hosting its first Sony Foundation Camp. We have great levels of interest from our students and staff and are now seeking the support of our extended community.

MLC School warmly invites nurses and medical professionals to volunteer expertise as part of 24-hour onsite medical staff for the 2024 MLC School Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp.

The four-day, three-night respite camp, hosted by Year 11 students and staff of MLC School will run from Saturday 7 December to Tuesday 10 December 2024 at Land’s Edge Foundation Harbour Lodge, 1 Chowder Bay Road, Mosman.

Children with additional needs who are attending the camp will be treated to a range of fun-filled activities from time at the beach to discos, magic shows, drumming workshops, craft and so much more!

We ask that you please share this opportunity with any nurses or medical professionals that you know.

Omnia – New Parent Portal is Live

Omnia – New Parent Portal is Live

The new parent portal, Omnia, launched on Tuesday and we have received many positive comments.

There are now generally two main channels for you to find information, learn of news, RSVP for events, see your daughter’s activities and confirm her excursions: Omnia and the MLC School app.

Please make sure you have the MLC School app (details are at the end of this email).

It is important to check Omnia regularly.

When you’re having a coffee – check Omnia. If you regularly check your socials – also check Omnia.

It can be accessed in a number of ways:

Your login is the same as for all MLC School systems. Need help with that? Please contact our IT team:service@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au.

Summary To Do

✅ Ensure you have downloaded the MLC School app

✅ Don’t know your login or password? Contact IT Service Desk

✅ Log in to Omnia: https://omnia.mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au

✅ Bookmark this link for future reference

✅ On the side menu – click Take a Tour to become familiar with all the aspects of Omnia.

✅ Go to your My Profile page and check your address details – click Edit to make any changes.

✅ Go to your My Profile page and subscribe to all the tags so you can filter new items to those that are relevant. You can always change these at any time.

✅ Review your daughter/s medical information and ensure it is correct and always up to date – click View/Edit to see more.

📱 💻  Get into the habit of checking Omnia every day or so.

What does that Omnia mean for you?

Essentially, Omnia and the MLC School app will work hand in hand to minimise the number of channels that parents need to access to find out important information about their daughter/s and happenings at the School.

Several emails will cease and you will find that information in Omnia and through app notices. The Tuesday event email has already switched over and so too will many other announcements and event invitations. Some emails will stay in place for a limited period, as we understand there will be a transition phase while people get used to the new processes.

✅ To do: you are urged to get into the habit of checking Omnia every day or so.

Here’s some further explanation of the platform:

The Dashboard:

Coming Up
Parents will be able to view each of their children – their upcoming activities and any confirmed excursions.

Co-curricular information includes sport and music for this purpose. Club swimming and club gymnastics are not included here however.

If something is missing or incorrect – please contact us: communications@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au

Excursions
Approval requests for an excursion, immersion, camp etc display in this list – there is a button for a parent to approve (in gold) – you can also decline here. When it has been approved, the button will be blue and say ‘approved’, if it has been declined, the button goes grey and says ‘declined’. The change may not be visible until you refresh the page. Parents can see the details on this list until the excursion date has passed.

News
Parents can read specific notices and reply directly via email to the staff member who sent the notice if needed.

Any notices sent through the MLC School app will also appear here – parents can subscribe to tags so that only app notices relevant to their daughter appear.

✅ To do: go to your My Profile page and subscribe to various tags so you can filter news items so that they are relevant. You can always change these at anytime.

Events
School events will appear here – some will have RSVP required, others won’t. Once there is an RSVP, there will be a confirmation email and an ical integration sent, so parents can add this to their own calendars. The change from RSVP to ‘Attending’ may not be visible until you refresh the page.

Side Menu

My Students
This page drills down more into each student’s information – a parent can switch from one child to the next on the top tab.

In this area you can see general information about your student, her reports, what co-curricular activities she is enrolled in, and information on approved excursions. For Senior School students the Luminary is listed and their email is linked here.

Importantly, you can view and edit the medical information we hold for the student.

✅ To do: take a look at this medical information and ensure it is correct and always up to date. Click View/Edit to see the information.

You can also lodge an absentee form from here.

Timetable
Generally, shows all Senior School student timetables/activities, but at the moment there is a limited view for Junior School students. Junior School timetables can be found in the School Information section on the side menu.

School Contacts
This section shows your daughter’s subjects and teachers (with an email link to contact them) for all students in the Senior School. For Junior School, it will display the main class teacher. There are also contact details for other significant staff members.

School Calendar
This is populated with a range of upcoming activities and has some colour coding. It is the same calendar as appears in the MLC School app.

My Profile
This section shows the information we hold about each parent – you. It is where you can subscribe to new tags that are relevant for your daughter. Remember to update these tags as your daughter changes activities or moves to a new Year group.

It is also where you edit your OWN contact information. Editing your own details does NOT edit the other parent’s information at all. Each record is distinct, and each parent needs to request a change of details.

✅ To do: check your address details – click Edit to make any changes.

School Information
This is a general information section where parents can find:

  • the Parent Handbook
  • forms you might need – including Illness and Misadventure related to exams/assessments. Click here to download step by step instructions.
  • general information on Flexischools, canteen, etc.
  • Junior School timetables by class
  • there is a page for every year level with contact info and, where relevant, assessment schedules
  • numerous pages on co-curricular activities

Audacia
All weekly School newsletters can be accessed here. These will be sent via the app to alert you a new issue is available.

From the Deputy Principal – Hot Weather Conditions and Student Wellbeing

Due to the predicted warm weather next week, we would like to prioritise student wellbeing and comfort. As such, students are permitted to wear either full winter uniform or full summer uniform for the remainder of the term.

I will take this opportunity to ask you for your ongoing partnership in upholding our uniform standards. Please ensure your daughter has not outgrown summer tunics and that all uniforms are the required length. Despite our best efforts, we are continuing to find students arriving with non-regulation jewellery, false lashes and nails, please ensure you are reinforcing our expectations at home and not permitting your child to leave home with those items.

Thank you for your support.

Important Information for Year 11 Examinations – From the Curriculum Office

Important Information for Year 11 Examinations – From the Curriculum Office

Important Information for Year 11 HSC and IB Students: Examination Protocols

As the Year 11 HSC and IB examinations continue, it is crucial for all students to be well-prepared and informed about the protocols to ensure a smooth and successful examination period. Examinations commenced on Monday 26 August 2024 and run until Thursday 5 September. Below are the key guidelines and rules that all students must adhere to:

Absences and Illness

If a student is ill on the day of an examination, they must submit an Illness and Misadventure form via the new parent portal, Omnia  and attach a Medical Certificate from the same day. Please click here for step by step guide.

This process exists for students who were unable to attempt a task or complete a task while experiencing illness or misadventure.

The Deputy Head of Senior School – Academics determines whether an Illness and Misadventure appeal application is valid. The Head of Department is then notified of this determination. The School will assess the student’s situation on a case-by-case basis, and their examination will be rescheduled with the new date communicated via email.

Prior to the Examination

  • If a student is running late. Notify the school at 97471266 and report to Elisa Scala (HSC) or Priscilla Quintana (IB) upon arrival at SC209.
  • If a student is feeling unwell before the examination, please ask them to go to the Health Centre immediately and do not sit the examination. They will need a medical certificate specifying their illness on the day of the examination.

The student should arrive at school 30 minutes before the examination and be at the examination room 15 minutes before the start time. It is important that they are in full school uniform and bring only clear drink bottles and stationery in a clear plastic bag. Mobile phones, smartwatches and any other technology are not permitted in the examination room. Only blue or black ink pens are allowed; gel pens or erasable pens are not acceptable. If the student feels unwell during the examination, they should notify the supervisor immediately, as the supervisor will document their condition for any possible illness or misadventure appeal.

We commend our Year 11 students for their hard work and dedication throughout this examination period and wish them the best of luck in their final assessments.

Thank you for your attention and support.

After School Study Support – Year 10 to Year 12

After School Study Support – Year 10 to Year 12

Week commencing Monday 26 August to Thursday 5 September 2024 – After School Study Session Nomination Form

Last term we launched the After School Study Support program for Year 11 and Year 12. As previously announced, we are now extending the program to include Year 10 students. The program aims to provide students with a quiet focused environment in which they can maximise their study time with assistance on hand when required.  The sessions are run by our team of highly supportive mentors, most of whom are pre-service teachers. They have subject matter expertise across a range of disciplines including English, Mathematics, the Sciences, History, Legal Studies, Economics, Geography, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE), Sports, Exercise and Health Science (SEHS) and Drama.

Led by Ela Huber, our Program Coordinator, each session commences with girls doing a goal setting exercise so that there are clear outcomes for the session. The study sessions are a phone free zone meaning students are required to hand in their phones at the start of each session. In addition to subject specific support our mentors can provide additional support in setting up study plans, examination preparation techniques and completion of assessments. Please note our mentors will provide verbal feedback on drafts only.

Program Overview

  • The sessions run from 3.30pm to 6pm Monday to Thursday on level 3 of the Senior Centre.
  • It is expected that students will attend for the entirety of the session. If in exceptional circumstances your daughter needs to leave early this should be prearranged with the program coordinator.
  • The sessions are phone free, and your daughter will be expected to hand in her phone at the beginning of the session.
  • Each session will commence with a short goal setting exercise so there is a clear plan of what they wish to achieve in the time.
  • If your daughter has been registered for a session and does not attend, you will receive an email informing you of their non-attendance. You will still be charged for the session.
  • Parents will be able to register their daughter two weeks in advance via a link on the parent portal and the weekly newsletter.
  • The cost per session is $25. Charges will be added to your daughter’s account at the end of the term.

If you would like your daughter to attend, please register her through the link provided below or on the My MLC Portal. If you have any questions, please contact our program coordinator by email here.

This week has been full of adventures with much to celebrate across the Junior School. Today MLC Junior School hosted teachers from other Sydney based ‘Round Square’ schools. Our visitors were extremely impressed with our beautiful campus. Throughout the day, MLC School shared our success implementing Round Square’s new Heroes of Discovery and we also discussed future collaboration between the schools. I look forward to sharing with you more about our engagement with Round Square in the future.

Year 4 Adventure Camp

Our Year 4 girls had a very successful adventure camp at Tallong in the Southern Highlands. The staff were full of praise for our girls who undertook a ‘challenge by choice’ on their bush camp.

RoboCup Success

This has been an extremely successful week for our Junior RoboCup teams. Our two primary teams that partook in the interschool ‘OnStage Primary Division’ took out second and third place (out of a total of 48 teams!) We are very proud of all our RoboCup students. We are also very proud of our STEM Teachers  Marie Cassar and Bede Schofield. Click here to read the full story.

IGSA Athletics Carnival

We had a number of girls representing MLC School at the IGSA Athletics Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. Congratulations to each girl for being selected and please read our Sports news for more details.

Booralee’s Jeans for Genes Day

Following Booralee’s Sunday Chapel service, they hosted Jeans for Genes Day across the Junior School campus on Thursday. Demin was to be seen everywhere (and our teachers took full advantage of the change to their dress code!) During the assembly we listened to a guest speaker learning about the significance of research into genes. We also had demonstrations of the girls’ yoyo skills (as we sold yoyos as part of our fundraiser). Year 3 student, Gem McGuire, is one of this year’s children on the Jeans for Genes Day poster.  It was wonderful for Booralee to support such a good cause. Thank you for your support.

Father’s Day Breakfast, Paper Plane Challenge, Father’s Day Stall and Raffle

It was wonderful to see so many dads (and others) with daughters at our annual Father’s Day breakfast.

For the first time, we hosted a fun paper plane challenge. Family gathered in their Houses to compete in flying their family paper plane. (It should be noted that the dads took this competition very seriously!) Congratulations to the winning House Leawarra. Father’s Day photos will be published on Facebook next week.

My thanks also to our parents who have organised a very successful Father’s Day stall and raffle. Our P&F, parent ambassadors and volunteers do a fantastic job. Thank you!

A Message for Year 6 Parents and Carers, From the Deputy Head of Junior School – Learning

A Message for Year 6 Parents and Carers, From the Deputy Head of Junior School – Learning

As part of our ongoing commitment to improving learning and teaching for students, MLC School engages Academic Assessment Services to conduct a series of diagnostic assessment tasks. This type of assessment usually occurs when students are in Year 4, Year 6, Year 8 and Year 10.

Students who are currently in Year 6 will complete the assessments on Wednesday 4 September 2024. The assessments are designed for Year 6 students and are of suitable duration and structure. The only equipment required is a black or blue pen (and maybe a spare). Please note that there is no additional cost to you for this assessment service.

The assessments will measure current levels of achievement and ability in Mathematics, Reading, Comprehension, Spelling, Written Expression, and Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. You will receive a report detailing your daughter’s performance later this year. From Year 6, performance in each test also measures learning growth over a two-year period.

The test results, together with school assessments and teacher reports, are a valuable resource for us in preparing teaching strategies and materials, and in gaining more information about how your daughter is progressing with her learning and how we can support her into the future.

Your daughter should not be concerned or anxious about this testing. It is not something that she should study for. The best preparation will be to arrive relaxed and refreshed after a good night’s sleep.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Year 2

Year 2

Last Thursday, our Year 2 students delighted us with their performance of ‘Cinder…Really? The True Story of Cinderella.’

We were thrilled to integrate this year’s Book Week theme, Reading is Magic, into our assembly. The girls enthusiastically learned their parts and the accompanying songs, making it a truly magical experience. We hope you enjoyed the show as much as we did!

Year 6 Visit Sydney Science Park

Year 6 Visit Sydney Science Park

On Thursday 22 August, Year 6 visited Sydney Science Park, they jumped on the bus in the morning for a 40 minute drive out to Luddenham. The MLC School girls were joined by several other schools. The girls rotated between a range of pillars, including Heat, Energy, and Health, to name a few. They learnt from a range of industry experts about each pillar, conducting experiments and collecting data. This trip is used to springboard the girl’s Collaborative Learning Project (CLP) Showcase presentation idea to solve a real-world problem related to building a new community with an innovative, sustainable and future-minded focus. Students from Year 6 reflected on their time out at Sydney Science Park.

– Year 6 Teachers

When Year 6 went to Sydney Science Park for the day we did many fun activities in small groups. My favourite activity was the urban development, I found this fun because we got to make our city and think about all the necessities that we might need in it. I made this with one of my friends in my group. The day was about exploring the types of Pillars and having fun. I think I can speak on behalf of Year 6; everyone had an excellent day at Sydney Science Park!
Keira Ritchley (Year 6B)

Year 6 students had the privilege of attending Sydney Science Park. The adventure began with a bus ride, leading the grade to a fun and educational experience. The class were split into groups, each exploring different activities. One activity focused on heat, where we learned about the dangers of heat and its consequences. After 15 minutes, students rotated to a new activity. Some rotations headed water filtration and urban development, learning about smart cities and how urban areas can be sustainable. My favourite activity was the energy presentation, where we discovered how sustainable energy sources are used in various environments, such as farms, cities, and homes. We also had the chance to examine a water filtration system and understand how it works. Overall, this trip was both exciting and educational, it also broadened our knowledge and helped us with information for our upcoming projects.
– Leona Nadarajah (Year 6B)

I loved Sydney Science Park; it was a great experience for us students to have. Two of my favourite things my group did were the circular economy and water, but all the activities were so engaging a fun! It’s interesting you think about what this park is going to be in the future and hopefully, I come back here one day and see it all done. The work and people going into this city were incredible, it was super engaging and hands-on activities like the water experiments and the heat, the health. SSP gave me so many questions and ideas for my project and experiments I should do.
– Alice Boddam-Whetham
(Year 6M)

When we went to Sydney Science Park, we did lots of fun activities with other schools. I have learned so much from Sydney Science Park while having fun! I enjoyed the part when we got to do a scavenger hunt in Smart Cities. In groups of three, we had to find the red cones that gave us information to fill out a worksheet. I learned about the Sydney Science Parkland and what they are planning to do to it. It was a nice experience.
– Charlotte Hing (Year 6M)

Our trip to Sydney Science Park was such a fun and interesting experience. We got to talk to experts from all around Sydney and we gained so much knowledge and ideas for our upcoming showcase. I particularly loved the urban development stall where we got to design a sustainable city that you would love to see at SSP. I also loved mapping out routes for roads and public transportation at the transport and mobility stall. It was such a wonderful day.
– Isla Young (Year 6F)

I had a blast at Sydney Science Park! There was so much to offer and learn with each station being just as exciting then the last one. All the staff were so friendly, and all the activities were fun and engaging. We even had our timetables showing us what we would be doing all day. SSP gave me some new, innovative ideas for my showcase and helped me decide what pillar I would be choosing. My favourite activity was circular economy, in which I learnt that glass could be turned into sand! Thank you to all the Year 6 teachers for organising this super fun day.
– April Cookson (Year 6F)

On Thursday 22 August Year 6 students from MLC School arrived at Sydney Science Park! Everyone was so excited to see what they could learn. There were so many fun and educational experiments but most importantly they covered so many different areas but the main ones were transport, water, energy, heat, and the circular economy. They were all so fun, but our favourites were the comparison of the different materials, The smart city scavenger hunt, and looking at contour lines. This was an interesting and magical experience and it was such a blast!
– Faith Huynh and Gemma Verden
(Year 6K)

On 22 August, we travelled to Sydney Science Park, and we learnt multiple skills on how to improve and create a sustainable city. We learnt about energy, health, heat, transportation, smart cities, circular economy, urban development, and urban agriculture. We also did a site tour and thirty six girls in the grade had the opportunity to plant trees for future generations.

We were taught that water is the most significant aspect of urban development. For the future, SSP community will be planning to become a sponge city. Sponge cities are new urban planning that emphasises flood management via strengthening green infrastructures instead of purely relying on drainage systems. The concept of a sponge city is that urban flooding, water shortages, and heat island effect can be alleviated by having more urban parks, gardens, green spaces, wetlands, nature strips and permeable pavements, which will both improve ecological biodiversity for urban wildlife and reduce flash floods by serving as reservoirs for capturing, retaining and absorbing excess stormwater.

In conclusion, SSP is an enjoyable day out of the classroom learning about how to build a sustainable and inviting city. It was also fun to know that we can help design a city that we could live in when we are adults.

Year 6 – PDHPE Goes Inside Out!

Year 6 – PDHPE Goes Inside Out!

Earlier this term, the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) Department took Year 6 to the movies to watch Inside Out 2! The original, Inside Out 1, has formed an integral part of the learning and assessment for this unit over the past few years so the PDHPE Staff were very excited that Inside Out 2 was released just in time for our unit of learning this year! The students had a fantastic time in a private theatre, enjoying the movie, taking notes (eating lollies!) and paying close attention to the emotions and their roles in our lives. Some Year 6 reflections on their experience are below:

What did you enjoy and what did you learn?

Although this part in the movie was a bit sad, I found the part where Riley had an anxiety attack interesting and relatable. I could easily see myself in a similar situation which made me happy to see that even though I feel as if I can’t handle my emotions well, it is common for adolescents like me. I have been in situations where I have been panicking from stress and it makes me feel happy to see that I’m not alone. I never really noticed that new emotions have come into my life but by watching this movie I have realised that I now do have more sophisticated emotions than years before. My ‘original emotions’ like anger have also started to be exaggerated like Riley’s. I have now learned that new emotions really have come into my life, and that there are better ways to deal with them instead of letting it all out at once.

Going to Inside Out 2 was an amazing and super important experience. I really enjoyed the whole movie, and one of the most memorable parts of the entire film for me was when Ennui (Boredom) took control of the console, and made Riley say something sarcastic. Ennui/Riley’s sarcastic comment caused a sarcasm. Any words said through the sarcasm, adopt sarcastic tones, making any sentence sound sarcastic. The movie taught me that every emotion is so important and helpful, and you need to have a balance of sadness, joy, anger, feat, anxiety, boredom, embarrassement, and envy to help you be yourself. No emotion should be bottled up and your sense of self does not have to be completely perfect and positive. I think that this movie has such an amazing message that lots of kids around my age need to hear.

During our Book Parade last Friday, two library leaders, Genevieve Livesey (Year 5) and Eve Hutchison (Year 5), asked some of the girls what they loved about Book Week. Here are their responses:

  • Antonella Crook (Year 1) – (Book week parade character – Whitney, chicken diva) reading
  • Sahana Siva (Year 3) – (Book week parade character, Taylor Swift) seeing what friends look like.
  • Vanilla Chen (Year 4) – (Book week parade character Ice cream) to read books
  • The Matildas group (Year 4) to read Matilda books

Class Comp

Last week was certainly the best thus far. Throughout the week we held our first ever Class Comp. Inspired by our Mini Olympics, we wanted to create an opportunity for the girls to work collaboratively and compete as a year group. The girls were split into the senior years (Year 10 – Year 12) and middle years (Year 7 – Year 9) divisions where they were able to participate in a range of disciplines including poem-writing, fairy bread relays and dancing.

We kicked off Monday with a creative poetry competition where each year group crafted a poem using an animal metaphor to represent themselves: Year 8 chose an octopus, Year 9 an eagle, Year 10 bees, Year 11 a polar bear, and Year 12 a starfish. The English teachers awarded the win to the imaginative Year 8 octopi and the buzzing Year 10 bees.

On Tuesday, the girls faced a fun and exciting fairy bread relay. In pairs, one girl made the fairy bread while the other ate it, only allowing them to tag the next duo once the bread was fully consumed. The competition was fierce, but Year 9 and Year 11 claimed victory.

Wednesday brought a lively dance competition where staff joined in on the fun. Each group had 10 minutes to choreograph a 30-second routine to ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling.’ The energy was high as Ms Peace danced with bubbles, Mr Symes hit the griddy, and Ms Lee soared in the air. Year 7 and Year 12 were declared the winners.

The week concluded with a challenging trivia contest for the Heads of Year. They answered questions about the School, tested their knowledge of each other, and tackled hypothetical scenarios judged by Ms Graffen (Head of Senior School). In the end, Ms White for Year 9 and Ms Pow for Year 12 emerged as the champions. It was an incredible week where girls from all year groups got involved and supported each other. Year 9 and Year 12 were crowned the overall winners and received framed certificates for their efforts.

Year 12 Stay and Play

We ended the week with our Year 12 Stay and Play. It was such an amazing evening where we were able to come together as a year group and enjoy time together outside of an academic setting. We spent time as a year group playing dodgeball against teachers, giant jenga, cornhole and more and then were surprised with a popcorn machine before gathering in the amphitheatre to watch High School Musical Three. It was an extremely enjoyable night to begin the celebration of graduation and we are extremely grateful for all the teachers who stayed back with us. Our maths teacher Ms Lee even mentioned that it was a great opportunity to have fun with staff and students alike. A massive thank you to Ms Pow and Ms Graffen for organising the night, it will certainly be one of our highlights of the year.

Year 7

Year 7

On Friday last week we were thrilled to welcome Rosemary Mula (grandmother of Victoria Lacchia-Schmidt) to our Year Meeting. Rosemary shared her experiences of service to others by talking through her experiences of volunteering at a range of Olympic Games and for a collection of Olympic teams. She talked of her wonderful experience as an attaché for the Kiribati team, even walking with them at the Opening Ceremony at Athens. I would like to thank Rosemary for sharing her time and insights with us. It so wonderful to hear about the interesting experiences that Rosemary has had the benefits and joy that come from sharing your time, experience, and energy with others. Thank you, Rosemary, for spending time with Year 7 as well as the lovely gifts all the way from Malta!

Week 6 saw students starting to plan out and some even film elements of their Rubbish Project in small groups as a part of their Academic Care program. Students were provided with resources created by Marianna Carlino (Director of eLearning) to support their filming, with tips and tricks about lighting and camera angles. Some groups also experimented with their filming, using the school iPads to piece together moments of action.

In the coming couple of weeks Year 7 will complete the remainder of their summative assessments for the term. With this in mind, we spent Luminary on Monday again focusing on organisation, time management and some dedicated time to ready themselves for the weeks ahead. Students have responded well to having access to a range of resources to aid in their planning ahead of tasks.

Year 8

Year 8

As we head towards the end of Term 3 we have a lot going on the Senior School, as we begin to graduate our Year 12 class of 2024.

This is an exciting and busy time, and we are lucky that at MLC School our Year 12 students share this time with the whole School. Year 8 are beginning to look towards their future time in Year 12 and are starting to monitor the traditions and expectations of celebrations and ceremonies with great anticipation of ‘when it is their turn’.

Due to this unseasonally hot weather students are allowed to wear their summer uniforms for the remainder of the term if they wish. Click here to read the communication from the Deputy Principal.

Please ensure your daughter is not wearing PE uniform to school – Year 8 had at least 30 girls last week who ‘forgot’ their uniforms and had to stay in PE gear all day.

Congratulations to Veronica Pan who was amazing at the Sydney Eisteddfod

  • Clarinet (15 Yrs & Under) – 2nd Place

and the Ryde Eisteddfod

  • Woodwind and Brass Encore Solo Unaccompanied (14 Yrs and Under) –1st Place
  • Woodwind and Brass Open Classical (Any Age) – 3rd Place

Have a great week everyone.

Year 9

Year 9

Year 9 have had another busy week! This week amongst the assessments, the Middle Years Leaders were absolutely wonderful ambassadors for the school at the Year 7 2025 Immersion Day. To hear the students speak so proudly of their school, and show confidence in themselves and their peers was something special and joyous to witness.

This week in Academic Care, the students were all together in a session with David Posker-Hill (Academic Care Coordinator) and discussed how to google and breaking down fake news. It was an engaging session and I encourage you to ask your child about what they learned.

Next Friday is the Senior School House Athletics Carnival! I have heard the students discussing their House themes and outfits and love that the involvement level is so high. This is a reminder that it is a compulsory day and I’d love Year 9 to start showing leadership in all that they take on.

Further to Melissa Boyd’s (Deputy Principal) note about uniform for the rest of Term 3 and Term 4, please note that Year 9 will not begin wearing the senior uniform until Term 1, 2025 when they begin Year 10.

I hope you have a lovely weekend, and please reach out to your child’s Luminary or myself if you need any assistance.

Head of Year 9

Year 10

Year 10

During Luminary this week Year 10 had study sessions to allow themselves some time to complete and prepare for the many assessments they have over this week and next. The students were allowed this opportunity based on feedback they had provided regarding Luminary time this term.

As mentioned in my newsletter piece on Friday 16 August, Andrew Taylor, Deputy Head of Senior School – Pastoral presented to the cohort on Wednesday 28 August as a follow up to the session from Marianna Carlino, (Director of eLearning) on Deepfakes. The cohort had some opportunity to provide some feedback and questions based on Marianna’s presentation which Andrew acknowledged and drew upon. Please click here for the newsletter piece. This important and immerging issue for young women in particular should be a community and social priority for us all to consciously be on top of.

We try to allow the students greater input into what is presented to them and also how they spend Luminary time and how their Year meetings are run. Another way to do this is through Luminary Representatives. Two weeks ago I shared the 16 Luminary Representatives from eight of our houses. I now congratulate our remaining four for our first round.

Siena Jury and Miranda Hudson Churunga
Seraphine McNamara and Han Nguyen Wade

I appreciate these students putting themselves forward and being nominated from their Luminary groups to be the first Luminary Representatives and being prepared to lead their peers.

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of attending a TEDx Youth Event, accompanied by Bridget Kovats, (Head of Year 7), and the following students from Year 10, along with some Year 9 students:

  • Julia Choi
  • Anna Obaid
  • Amelia Tchan
  • Ze Wong
  • Leylim Ozer
  • Laila Chopra
  • Carina Savoca

The students appreciated the opportunity to engage in the event and engage in current youth issues.

Please reach out if you are concerned about your daughter at all. I can be contacted via email arenwick@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au or my direct line 8741 3278.

Year 11

Year 11

Our image this week is of a fairly traditional scene in education – HSC students about to begin the Modern History examination in Potts Hall. MLC School students have been sitting exams since 1886 and in Potts Hall since the 1930s. However, the style of assessment in Senior School has changed in many ways and examinations are now just one aspect of a Year 11 student’s assessment schedule. Leading to this point, girls have completed major works, practical exams, music and drama performances, experiments, oral presentations and scenarios across many key learning areas and two senior programs. Year 11 have done a wonderful job in settling down to the task, getting organised in the exam spaces and working with the invigilators. They have been supporting each other after the exams and working on site in the pods in study groups and by themselves to get the work done.

During the change of season, Health Centre has reported lots of students checking in with coughs, colds and flu. If your daughter is sick for an exam, please contact the Studies Office via email studiesoffice@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au or 61 2 8741 3144 and submit an Illness and Misadventure form via the new parent portal, Omnia  and attach a Medical Certificate from the same day. Please click here for step by step guide.

If you have specific questions on the process, please direct them to Priscilla Quintana by email here for IB and Elisa Scala by email here for the HSC programme. The relevant Heads of Faculty will be contacted from that point.

For wellbeing concerns during the exam period and during term time, please contact myself on 02 8741 9736 or sconnolly1@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au

Year 12

Year 12

A highlight of the term for me was the Stay and Play that we had on Friday 23 August after school. It was fantastic to see many of the cohort blowing off steam with some competitive teacher/student dodgeball, cornhole and giant Jenga. After games we headed inside and whilst Emily Osborne (teacher, Head of Booralee) mastered the popcorn machine the students settled in for a viewing of High School Musical 3. A huge thank you to all the staff who supported this as without them giving up their Friday night it would not have been possible.

This week (Week 6) has seen more examination results returned and I know that many students are meeting with teachers to gain more feedback and establish what next. We reflected on this in Luminary time, looking for common threads in feedback. Year 12 also had an Academic Care session with Joanna Graffen (Head of Senior School) about dealing with success and failure as she shared with them some valuable life lessons.

On Wednesday we celebrated Wear It Purple day, an important date in our calendar to recognise the diversity and inclusivity in our community. Well done to Sarah Furlan (Community and Round Square Captain) for leading events during the day. We rounded out the week with a gratitude activity celebrating what we value in each other. As ever, Year 12 approached this with generosity and warmth.

Even though we are hurtling towards the end of term and Graduation celebrations we still have much to enjoy in the next few weeks. Next week we have the Athletics House Carnival and House Debating challenge followed by the annual Dance Showcase at the weekend. I look forward to seeing full Year 12 participation as we enjoy our last few weeks together.

Science Week 2024 – From the STEM Captain

Science Week 2024 – From the STEM Captain

In celebration of Science Week 2024, the Scholar Captain, Moira Peach, and I, along with the help of some amazing teachers, conducted a series of intriguing and unique experiments during Monday Lunchtime, to showcase the wonders of science and technology. Our aim was to spark curiosity and foster a love for science within the MLC School community.

We arranged a variety of hands-on experiments for students to enjoy, such as film canister rockets, cartesian diver, self-blooming flowers, oil colour cascade and making big bubbles! A teacher and a couple of Year 12 science students were positioned at each experiment, offering their knowledge to enrich students understandings as to how and why each reaction occurred.

We also featured a large demonstration called ‘Elephant’s Toothpaste’, where students watched from a safe distance as large volumes of colourful foam erupted into the sky. Overall, these experiments were highly successful, promoting participation, enhancing scientific understanding, and inspiring a greater passion for science and technology.

A special thank you to Mr Blackburn, Ms McAlister, Mr Tibbey, Ms Cassidy, Ms Ottoway and Ms An for their invaluable help!

Being the Captain for this team has been an absolute privilege. Working with such a talented and enthusiastic group of girls has been a joy and I cannot wait to see what they have in store for the next few years. I would also like to thank Ms Lisa Filby and the Sports Department for their hard work and dedication to our team this year. Congratulations to all team members for 2024, you all worked incredibly hard to earn these fantastic results, so let’s aim for more next year!

MLC School Diving Team Success

MLC School Diving Team Success

The MLC Diving team has been very busy recently as they prepare for the beginning of the 2024/25 age season, and conclude the Elite Junior season.

We would like to congratulate Ada Savage (Year 8) for her recent success at the School Sports Australia National Diving Championships in Adelaide, as she won Gold in the synchronised diving with her partner Lilian Cormack. This continues the success from the Australian Age Championships earlier this year, where Eloise Dastyari (Year 5) won a Bronze medal in the U/11 girls platform.

We wish all the best to the girls competing at the Elite Junior State Championships and the Age Interclub this weekend, where we have 11 girls competing in their first ever competition, as well as seasoned divers hoping to gain qualifications for Nationals next year.

Tennis News – Interdistrict Report

Tennis News – Interdistrict Report

What is Interdistrict?

It’s a club competition involving the top players from each district. As a school we managed to be involved for the last few years to develop the game of MLC School tennis players.

Over the past few weeks, our girls have shown remarkable improvement in various aspects of their game, including attitude, resilience, determination, communication, tactics, shot selection, and consistency.

The MLC School teams participate in different divisions, showcasing their skills and dedication.

U/16 Irene Matthews Cup

Composition:
Number 1: Hannah Olsson (Year 9)
Number 2: Trinity Nguyen (Year 11)
Number 3: Angelina Xu (Year 9)

In a challenging division with tough opponents, this team had to bring their best game to win a few matches. They demonstrated exceptional physical and mental abilities, keeping their heads above water. This competition will serve as valuable experience for the next two terms in IGSA Tennis and Tildesley 2025.

U/14 Wade & Neal Cup Division 2

Composition:
Number 1: Harlow Elsibai (Year 8)
Number 2: Isabella Munoz (Year 9)
Number 3: Georgia Delis (Year 9)

In a highly competitive division, this team utilised their best skills and communication, especially in doubles matches. This experience will be great practice for the upcoming tennis season.

U/14 Wade & Neal Cup Division 3

Composition:
Number 1: Yasmine Allam (Year 7)
Number 2: Kyra Narang (Year 9)
Number 3: Chiarah Nguyen (Year 7)
Reserve: Rayna Zhu (Year 5)

This very young team, led by Yasmine, performed admirably and secured 3rd place in their division.

U/12 Crackanthorp Cup Division 3

Composition:
Number 1: Maggie Ma (Year 6)
Number 2: Remy Pereira (Year 5)
Number 3: Annika Bou (Year 5)
Reserve: Rayna Zhu (Year 5)

This team performed exceptionally well, finishing in 2nd place. Their amazing effort will see them represent the school in IPSHA next term and they are poised to be the emerging players for our Tildesley team in the future.

The dedication and hard work of all the teams have been commendable. Their progress and achievements are a testament to their commitment and passion for the sport. We look forward to seeing their continued growth and success in future competitions.

Absences from Sport

What to Do When You Are Not Able to Make Training or a Game

On the rare occasions that it may be necessary for a player to miss training or a competition, please follow these instructions.

  • If the inability to attend is known in advance – a written explanation (email) from the player’s parent/guardian is to be given to the coach and sports department in advance. This notice should be given as early as possible.
  • If the player is absent from school on the day of training or on competition day – the player’s parent/guardian is asked to advise the coach and sports department of their child’s absence from training or the game.
  • Do not ask your friends or team mates to give your coach the message
  • Do give as much notice as possible
  • If there is a clash with another sport or school event, please speak with the sports department to determine which game/event you should attend.

Please Note: Continued failure to attend training or competitions without a timely written explanation is unacceptable and may jeopardise the player’s continued involvement in sport.

A member of the sports department will contact Parents/guardians of students whose non-attendance at training or games is not notified in the correct manner.

Pockets are only awarded to students who have met all requirements of training and games.

Wet Weather

What do I do if it is Wet Weather?

While on most occasions we would not cancel training for wet weather, cancellations may occur if rain is too heavy to train in or weather conditions deem it unsafe. Additionally, we may be required to cancel training when we cannot accommodate students safely in an indoor space.

FOR MORNING TRAINING

The decision to cancel any morning training sessions will be made by 8:00pm the night before training.

Wet weather cancellations will be posted on the MLC School Sport Facebook Page, and a notification on the MLC School app.

No Facebook post, or app notification means that activities will still go ahead.

FOR AFTER SCHOOL TRAINING

The decision to cancel any after school training sessions will be made by 1pm on the day of training.

Wet weather cancellations will be posted on the MLC School Sport Facebook Page and the MLC School app.

ON SATURDAYS

If you are playing an IPSHA Sport, please download the IPSHA App – this can be downloaded from the App store and has information for parents. It is also used to send push notifications for Girls Saturday Sport weather updates and for marshalling calls at Major Carnivals.

IPSHA normally make a decision about wet weather by 7am.

If you are playing an IGSA Sport, go to the following link https://igsasport.spawtz.com/

The IGSA website will let you know if your venue is closed or open.

When possible, we will also post the cancellations on our Sport Facebook Page and the MLC School app.

On all occasions, it is the individuals’ responsibility to check the wet weather information. The sports department, coaches and managers are not always in a position to relay any game cancellations.
