From the Principal

Further update on uniform review

Over the break, we concluded our meetings with various suppliers and finalised our list of uniform items to be introduced, updated or removed. Where items are to be introduced or removed, we will inform the community and make the necessary changes as soon as possible. Changes to garments that have been identified for updating and redesigning will take more time. There will be further consultation about the design of the garments that are to be updated once we have some examples to share. Thank you to all parents, students and staff who participated in the consultation, it was an invaluable source of information.

In response to community feedback and aligned with our values, one of the first items to be added to our uniform is the option of hijab as part of the uniform from Term 3, 2025. This reflects our commitment to meeting the needs of our Muslim students and is consistent with the Uniting Church’s vision of being “a Church for all God’s people”—a community that celebrates diversity and inclusion as a gift of grace and seeks to make space for all cultures and expressions of faith. You can read more about the Uniting Church’s vision as a multicultural church on their website.

NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) 2025 Results

No doubt, you will be familiar with recent Australian media coverage, as highlighted by The Guardian, which reports significant concern regarding the performance of Australian students in the 2025 NAPLAN tests. One of the main points raised is that “one in three students fail to meet NAPLAN benchmarks.” Additionally, the reporting notes that four in ten students performed below expectations specifically in grammar and punctuation, indicating difficulties in recognising verbs and pronouns within sentences.

While NAPLAN is but one measure of student performance and is not without its limitations, the results do provide schools with important feedback about areas of strength, student growth and opportunities for further focus and improvement. Since 2018 we have seen steady improvement in our performance on the tests and our results this year are outstanding. I am delighted to highlight the following comments written for the School community by our Head of Learning and Teaching, Melissa McMahon, ‘NAPLAN results for 2025 were mailed home last week, and I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the phenomenal achievements and remarkable growth demonstrated by our students.

‘At a time when public discourse is focused on declining literacy standards across Australia, MLC School continues to buck the trend. Our students’ literacy and numeracy outcomes are not only strong—they are improving year on year.’

Please read the full analysis in this newsletter.

Congratulations to our students and teachers on these outstanding results.

P&F Parent Forum with Paul Dillon

P&F Parent Forum with Paul Dillon

Many parents braved the rain and cold to attend Wednesday night’s P&F Forum with Paul Dillon focusing on Alcohol, parties and gatherings. Paul canvassed much more than teenage alcohol use, covering the many other substances that are available, as well as vaping (usage is falling) and the emergence of smoking once again. Some of his statistics were alarming. The good news is that alcohol use is on the decline, with statistics indicating many teenagers do not drink at all.

Paul offered insight into the challenges teens face as their social life starts to grow; and shared many practical parenting tips on how to keep children safe while still allowing them to develop socially.

Earlier in the day, Paul spoke to girls in Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12 to help them understand issues around drugs, alcohol and social settings – and importantly ways to stay safe and take care of one another. He reflected on some of his discussions with the students when he spoke with parents in the evening.

This is Paul’s 16th year presenting at MLC School and his expertise makes him a well regarded partner in our pastoral care and parent information program.

Paul offers a wealth of resources on his website https://darta.net.au/ and parents are urged to refer to it as needed. Paul promises to answer every email and can be followed on social media.

We thank the P&F for their support for this important, ongoing initiative.

Celebrating Artistic Excellence: Giuliana McCluskey-Voigt (Year 11) Selected for NAS HSC Intensive Program

Celebrating Artistic Excellence: Giuliana McCluskey-Voigt (Year 11) Selected for NAS HSC Intensive Program

We are delighted to announce that Year 11 student Giuliana McCluskey-Voigt has been successful in her application for the prestigious National Art School HSC Intensive Studio Practice 2025, with a focus on life drawing.

This program is highly competitive, with only a selected few from across the state accepted. Giuliana’s selection is a testament to her dedication, skill, and creative growth in Visual Arts.

‘Here are a few of my drawings. The first ones are quick, three to ten minute gestural drawings, and the other two are ones we did at the end of the day for a few hours.’
Giuliana

Her portfolio so far showcases a dynamic range of techniques, from expressive gestural sketches to more refined, time-intensive compositions. These works reflect Giuliana’s evolving artistic voice and her readiness to take on advanced study.

The HSC Intensive Studio Practice runs across two modules held in the July Holidays and then in the September/October Holidays. We look forward to seeing what she will produce in Term 4.

We extend our congratulations to Giuliana and thank all staff and families who supported students in applying. If your daughter is interested in applying for 2026 and beyond sessions, please look at the options on their website and talk to class teachers. For any questions, feel free to reach out.

Illuminate 2025

Illuminate 2025

MLC School’s annual arts festival, Illuminate 2025 transformed the Senior Centre into a carnival of colour and creativity, displaying Design and Technology, Visual Arts, Food Technology, Textiles and Multimedia works. From the youngest creators in the Junior School to the accomplished artists in the Senior Years, we celebrated all of the incredible artistic and creative pursuits that set MLC School girls apart.

This year’s theme, ‘Step Right Up’, celebrated the open-mindedness, and curiosity that drive artistic exploration, encouraging students to take creative risks, embrace the unexpected, and showcase their talents with boldness and flair, much like the courage it takes to take risks. Just like at a carnival, there was something different and exciting around every corner, with each artwork offering a chance to engage with something new.

A highlight of the evening was the House Challenge, which saw our dedicated House Captains rally their peers to create their own interactive carnival games. Throughout the evening students and their families could play the games that the students worked so hard to create. Earlier this week, we announced Moormoora as the winners of Illuminate 2025, with Prescott coming in second!

From textiles tote bags to surrealist ceramic works, the dedication and creativity of the students was displayed, allowing all to experience the imagination, innovation, and skill that define our their work. Live performances from our talented music students added atmosphere to the evening, making the event a true celebration of creativity in all its forms.

A big thank you to the Art and TAS departments for aiding students in their artmaking practices and allowing the night to come together so beautifully.

Outstanding NAPLAN Results and Individual Student Growth

Outstanding NAPLAN Results and Individual Student Growth

NAPLAN results for 2025 were mailed home last week, and I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the phenomenal achievements and remarkable growth demonstrated by our students.

At a time when public discourse is focused on declining literacy standards across Australia, MLC School continues to buck the trend. Our students’ literacy and numeracy outcomes are not only strong—they are improving year on year.

In Reading, the percentage of students performing at a Strong or Exceeding level is exceptional:

  • Year 3: 94%

  • Year 5: 96%

  • Year 7: 94%

  • Year 9: 92%

In several cohorts, less than 1% of students—sometimes even 0%—were identified as needing additional support.

In Numeracy, results are similarly impressive:

  • Year 3: 90%

  • Year 5: 97%

  • Year 7: 91%

  • Year 9: 95%

These figures compare very favourably with state averages. In fact, MLC School students are achieving two to three times the state proportion of students in the “Exceeding” category.

Having worked in schools for nearly thirty years, I can confidently say that I have never seen NAPLAN results of this calibre. They reflect not only the skill and dedication of our teachers, but also the high levels of parent engagement and the value placed on literacy in MLC School families.

As a researcher currently studying the teaching of writing, I have encountered significant evidence highlighting the power of oral language, particularly its role in vocabulary development, idea formation, reading comprehension, and writing. I am especially proud of the work being done in our Pre-K program to build strong oral language foundations. I’m confident this will have long-term benefits for our students’ literacy growth.

The more we can encourage our girls to engage in rich conversation, around the dinner table, in study groups, or during classroom dialogue, the stronger their learning outcomes will be.

These results also reflect the impact of explicit instruction, differentiation, and the dedicated efforts of our teachers to maintain high levels of student engagement, particularly through the often challenging middle years. While many schools observe a dip in performance between Year 5 and Year 9, this is not the case at MLC School. I am also encouraged by the number of students who continue to read for pleasure well into adolescence.

Congratulations to our students and teachers on these outstanding results. We are so proud of what you’ve achieved.

New Developments and Directions in Learning and Teaching
I am delighted to share some of the exciting developments underway in Teaching and Learning at MLC School. Each initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to nurturing every girl’s potential, supporting our teachers as expert practitioners, and expanding opportunities for deep, rich learning.

1. Expanding Acceleration Pathways
Earlier this year, we introduced an Accelerated Mathematics class for high-achieving Year 10 students, enabling them to begin HSC Mathematics early. Following the success of this program, we have now extended acceleration into Year 9, after a rigorous selection and testing process. Looking ahead, 2026 will see the introduction of accelerated Studies of Religion I, with a selected cohort completing the course in a compressed format and sitting the HSC that same year.

2. Year 9 Electives: Student Voice and Choice
Last week, over 150 parents and students attended our Year 8 Elective Information Evening. Year 9 electives mark the first moment in a girl’s learning journey where she exercises real agency over her studies. Students were encouraged to select a broad and balanced range of three electives, with an emphasis on pursuing current passions and interests—not future career paths. We were particularly excited to introduce Engineering Technology for the first time, aligning with our strategic goal to promote girls’ engagement in STEM.

3. Launching Professional Learning Teams for Teachers
This term we welcomed our new Director of Professional Practice, who will lead the design and implementation of Professional Learning Teams in the Senior School. These teams will engage in collaborative inquiry into key areas of girls’ education, trialling evidence-informed strategies aimed at improving student outcomes. You can read more about this initiative here.

4. A New Quiet Space: ‘Getaway’
Our Learning Enhancement Department recently launched Getaway, a reflective space for girls who may benefit from a quieter environment at recess, lunch, or before school. This calm, inclusive space provides students with an alternative to the playground and is already proving a valuable addition to our wellbeing offerings. More details can be found here.

5. Strengthening High Potential Learning
We are pleased to announce that James Adams will join us on Monday 4 August 2025 as our new High Potential Learning Leader (K–12). James is currently completing his Master of Educational Leadership at Harvard University and has recently been appointed as an Australian Delegate to the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children. In 2026, he will be joined by Amy Kirk in a shared leadership role. Together, they will enhance our identification processes and lead the development of a multi-tiered program that supports high potential learners across the school.

Thank you for your continued partnership as we shape the future of teaching and learning at MLC School.

Professional Practice at MLC School

Professional Practice at MLC School

I’m thrilled to have joined MLC School as the Director of Professional Practice. It’s a privilege to be part of such a vibrant and forward-thinking learning community.

On Wednesday, we launched our new Professional Learning Teams Model with our teacher facilitators. This model is designed to foster collaboration, innovation, and meaningful growth among our educators. The MLC School Collaborative Inquiry Sprints Pilot is a practical and empowering professional learning approach that blends Simon Breakspear’s Teaching Sprints with the reflective depth of the Spiral of Inquiry by Helen Timperley, Linda Kaser, and Judy Halbert.

Delivered over six, one-hour workshop sessions, this model invites teachers to work together on real classroom challenges, trial targeted strategies, gather evidence of impact, and share insights. These workshops showcase practical examples of teaching and learning, encouraging the use of evidence-informed strategies that are relevant and meaningful in each teacher’s unique context.

The model promotes cross-faculty learning, honours teacher expertise, and supports professional growth that is both manageable and impactful. I look forward to seeing the incredible outcomes this initiative will bring to our classrooms and our community.

On Wednesday, our Kindergarten students visited Calmsley Hill City Farm as part of our science topic on Living Things, The weather didn’t dampen our spirits one bit! We had an udderly awesome time milking a cow, petting sheep and goats, and learning all about farm animals up close. One of the highlights was the whip-cracking show, which had everyone watching in amazement and a very bumpy tractor ride. It was a wonderful day of hands-on learning and new experiences.

Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2025 at MLC School

Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2025 at MLC School

This year, MLC School proudly celebrated NAIDOC Week under the theme ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.’ As we mark 50 years of NAIDOC Week, we honour the enduring legacy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and ancestors, while recognising the powerful role of young Indigenous leaders shaping our future. The theme invites us to reflect on the strength found in community, the vision that drives change, and the legacy that inspires us all. At MLC School, we are committed to fostering respect, understanding, and empowerment—ensuring that the next generation continues to lead with courage and connection to Country and culture.

During Chapel service, Rev Vinnie Ravetali and Pastor Caitlin Scott explored how Aboriginal spirituality and Christianity can coexist and how Christian Aboriginal leaders have been at the forefront of the movement for justice for Aboriginal peoples.

In Luminary time, students learned about the history of NAIDOC Week, explored the theme’s significance, and understood the meaning behind this year’s NAIDOC Week poster. As part of the Truth Telling session, Year 8 students learned how the 1938 Day of Mourning evolved into NAIDOC Week.

Last Friday, the entire School gathered on the Sport Field for a special assembly featuring the Buuja Buuja Butterfly dancers. This talented group, led by Wiradjuri woman Rayma Johnson — grandmother of an MLC School student — includes MLC School girls among its members and performed several traditional Wiradjuri dances. After their inspiring performance, the dancers invited teachers up on stage to learn the Cod Fish dance, and soon the whole school was joining in. It was a joyful and memorable celebration of Aboriginal culture, allowing all students to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the traditions and pride of our Aboriginal community members.

Year 7

Year 7

It was wonderful to have a Year meeting with Year 7 this week and I had the pleasure of handing out Awards for students who have sat some Mathematics Competitions recently. Year 7 were very well represented and produced some outstanding results. I must give a special shout out to Sissi Zheng (Year 7) who achieved a Perfect Score Award for the Kangourou des Mathématiques competition. The celebratory cheers from the cohort were wonderful to hear, well done Sissi!

Year 7 also showed their growth and bravery as they had their vaccinations on Wednesday. I was very impressed with their resilience and maturity as they supported one another and challenged themselves through the process.

I also spoke to Year 7 this week about the expectations of uniform, including ensuring they have their tie on each day, and bring their blazer to and from school every day. I thank you for your ongoing support with assisting to uphold the uniform standards.

Stay dry and warm over the weekend and please reach out to your daughter’s Luminary or teachers if you have any questions.

Students know which group they have been allocated to. They are to arrive and be seated in the Kent House playground by 7.15am on the day they are travelling to Mudgee and 7.50am for their Sydney immersion days.

As we are organising a large cohort of students, we please ask that parents and carers quickly say their goodbyes outside of the Kent House gates as we need to keep the area around Kent House clear for safety when loading and heading onto the buses.

The MLC School camp mobile numbers are:

    • 0477 667 797 for Group 1
    • 0400 636 426 for Group 2

These numbers are for emergencies only. If a parent needs to be contacted during the camp, it will be via these numbers. Please do not message this number for general check ins – teachers will be busy spending time with your daughters, face to face, for the duration of the camp.

Unlike primary school camps, you will not be updated regularly on your child via Seesaw or another similar platform. As per the camp communication guidelines outlined in the Code of Conduct you can expect; an app message on arrival, one – two social media posts (not all students may be featured), and an app message regarding return time to school once we have left the camp site.

As much as you might want to know that your child is alright, please do not allow them to take their phone or smartwatch or ask them to take these devices to camp.

Additionally, we request that students do not bring any valuables. We cannot guarantee that they won’t get lost.

In Mudgee, there are outdoor activities in the evening and it’s going to be cold! Ensure your child has thermal clothes, a very warm jacket and a beanie.

A video with more information regarding Year 8 Immersion is available via the link below:

I hope that all students have a fabulous week and thoroughly enjoy themselves.

Year 9

Year 9

This term during Luminary sessions, Year 9 will complete the Teens and Screens program Being Online: Maximising the Good, Minimising the Bad, developed by youth mental health experts at the Black Dog Institute using data from their Future Proofing Study of adolescent mental health.

The program is designed to support adolescent wellbeing in a digital world, and aims to equip students with the tools to:

          • Recognise the positive and negative aspects of being online.
          • Understand the different ways young people engage in the online world.
          • Explore how certain platforms can affect mental health and well-being.
          • Learn how technology companies use persuasive design to keep users engaged.
          • Develop strategies to enhance positive online experiences and reduce potential harms.

While concerns about the negative impacts of being online are widespread, research shows the reality is more complex. The program encourages students to reflect on how to build positive online habits and navigate challenges effectively. We invite you to continue this important conversation with your daughter at home to reinforce the strategies they’ve learned.

On this webpage, you will also find additional resources for families, including:

  • A webinar for parents and carers offering deeper insights into the relationship between young people, screen use, and mental health.
  • A detailed report of the findings on adolescents and screen use from the Future Proofing Study.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact myself or reach out to your daughter’s Luminary.

Getaway Breakout Space in SC101

Starting this Term 3, the Learning Enhancement Department have introduced ‘Getaway’, an alternative space available to students during break times and before school. This initiative will be piloted throughout Term 3. Students may utilise this space as an alternative to the playground. Members of the Learning Enhancement Team have generously volunteered their time to support this initiative and will be present to offer guidance on upcoming assignments, exams, and homework. The space will function both as a drop-in centre for some students and as a sustained quiet environment for others.

Students are expected to be respectful and considerate of diverse needs, as students who attend Getaway will do so for a variety of reasons.

Getaway will operate:

Before school Monday and Tuesday: 7.45am – 8.15am

Recess: Wednesday and Thursday

Lunch: every day

Year 10

Year 10

This week in our Year meeting, we celebrated the many achievements of our Year 10 students. It’s so important to recognise and acknowledge their successes, both inside and outside the classroom. I encouraged Year 10 to continue sharing their accomplishments with me and their Luminary – we love hearing about the amazing things they’re doing beyond school. We’re incredibly proud of how well they balance their academic commitments with a wide range of other interests. Below are some photos of our Year 10 Cadets and Mathematicians. Well done to all involved!

On Wednesday, Year 10 took part in an important pastoral care session with Paul Dillon on Young People, Alcohol and Risk Taking: Looking After Your Mates. The talk provided practical strategies for keeping themselves and their friends safe when socialising, while also debunking common myths around alcohol, vaping, and drug use. Year 10 engaged excellently with the presentation and the feedback highlighted the importance of educating and equipping our students. As part of this program, they will continue to hear from Paul Dillon over the next two years ensuring they have the knowledge and understanding of navigating the world around them.

Year 11

Year 11

Voting for our 2026 Leadership team closed this morning, Friday 1 August at 8am. It has been such an exciting week for the students in more ways than one. As we are aware putting yourself like this takes courage, particularly competing against your peers and sometimes good friends, additionally a large amount of empathy is required as well.

At our Year meeting on Tuesday 29 July, Fiona Pow (Head of Students Year 10 to Year 12) and I reflected on the moments when we have both applied for the same 3 positions over the many years we have been working together, where we have had turns of being successful and disappointed. This almost always brought awkwardness to our relationship. We shared that these times required compassion to ourselves, allowing ourselves time to reflect and be disappointed and compassion to the other person if they have been unsuccessful. We also mentioned that you can be disappointed with grace or ‘class’ even if you must ‘fake it until you make it’. At the end of the day, we have several students who would be excellent at the positions available; however, there is only a limited number available to this wonderful year group.

Thank you to May Nguyen (Year 11) and Mary Cameron (Year 11) for leading our Year meeting and Mary for her interesting MLC School fact about the Silver Jubilee Cake. Thank you also to Year 11 students Maxine Hawkins, Olivia Pan, Allegra Chiang, Zoya Rezainia, Laila Chopra and Sasha Murray for participating in the meeting.

Congratulations to our Term 3 Luminary Representatives who will lead Luminary sessions this term. Their first task is to prepare for the Big Sister Little Sister session next week on Compassion and discussing the upcoming Anti-Bullying Week in Week 4. I am pleased that the following Year 11 students have put themselves forward this term:

  • Abbeythorpe – Olivia Pan and Allegra Chiang
  • Booralee – May Nguyen and Mary Cameron
  • Churunga – Allegra Carlini and Tilly Ackland
  • Leawarra – Stephy Liang and Phoebe Zein
  • Lester – Cathy Nguyen and Zoe Bigg
  • Mooramoora – Gauri Nathan and Harriet Hahn
  • Prescott – Maxine Hawkins and Christine Li
  • Sutton – Jessie Xu, Zoe Taylor
  • Wade – Amelia Tchan and Milla Zhang
  • Whitley – Olivia Sun-Ryan and Serena Farley

The Paul Dillon presentation on Wednesday 30 July received positive feedback from Year 11 students. He provided a tailored presentation to the cohort and provided up to date information on trends, risks and ways for young people to keep safe when socialising. Many of the strategies Paul discussed with the students are to keep others and themselves safe.

If you have any queries or concerns, I can be reached via email arenwick@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au and my direct line which is 028741 3278

Dates Coming up:

  • Year 11 Examination Block – Wednesday 20 August to Wednesday 3 September

Japanese HSC Skill Development Workshops at MLC School

Japanese HSC Skill Development Workshops at MLC School

On July 18 2025, MLC School hosted the Japanese Teachers’ Association of NSW (JTAN) HSC Skill Development Workshops. The day allowed students to come together to enhance their Japanese language skills in preparation for the HSC examinations. JTAN also organised Japanese speaking days to practice for the Japanese HSC Oral examination during Term 2 with the Japanese HSC Beginners Speaking day also being hosted at MLC School.

Students participated in a series of targeted Japanese language workshops tailored for the Beginners, Continuers, and Extension Japanese courses. Each session was led by experienced teachers, who generously shared their expertise and insider tips on how to approach each component of the HSC written exam. The workshops covered essential skills such as listening, reading comprehension, writing, and responding in Japanese, helping students build both confidence and competence.

Students not only gained valuable exam skills, but also built connections with peers from other schools, exchanged study strategies, and learned from experienced teachers. The collaborative atmosphere encouraged active participation and allowed everyone to benefit from a shared passion for the Japanese language and culture.

As the students move forward toward their HSC and future endeavours, we wish them every success and hope that the skills and connections gained during this event will serve them well in their language learning journeys.

Year 12

Year 12

Year 12 are busy preparing for their HSC and IB Trials next week. They have been using their study and prep to finalise notes, complete practise responses and check in with their teachers. Your daughter’s teachers are a key component of the support network on offer at MLC School, including your daughter’s luminary, the curriculum team, faculty heads, wellbeing staff, mentors, counselling team and myself as Head of Year (HOY).

Elisa Scala (Deputy Head of Senior School – Academic) spoke with Year 12 this week about exam rules and regulations for the Trial period. It is essential that students arrive for their exam at least 30 minutes prior to their exam. This time allows your daughter to settle in, have their name marked off and flag any issues with staff. Please familiarise yourselves with the Illness/Misadventure process should your daughter become unwell during the Trials. This can be found on Omnia (the parent portal) and in this week’s newsletter under News. In Luminary this week, girls used the final session for personal study and check ins with luminaries. The Year 12 Luminary Team, some of whom have known your daughters since Year 7, are a great source of support in Luminary and House time.

We have encouraged Year 12 to approach their wellbeing this term in the same way as they do study – to create a wellbeing plan that works for them and to programme things like exercise and sleep. Diet is a key factor in supporting brain health and mood, particularly under stress. Please note that full winter uniform is required for the Trials.

A big congratulations goes to Nadia Chan (Year 12) for her performance in the CAT Competition (Computational and Algorithmic Thinking), run by the Australian Maths Trust. She achieved a Credit and Distinction Award in the Senior Division. We’re so proud of the HSC Drama students who performed their pieces last week and look forward to the HSC Music performances on Friday afternoon.

Our image this week is of Paul Dillon from DARTA (Drug and Alcohol Research & Training) who gave a wonderful talk to Year 12 about the use of alcohol and safe partying strategies. Paul has worked with Year 12 since Year 10 and the girls responded very well to the information he gave them.

The Trials can be a stressful time, so please check in with me if your daughter requires support and look after yourselves too.

As the end of Year 12 approaches, could I ask for your support in ensuring the following:

  • All absences must be accounted for. Absence notification can be submitted by:
    • Using the Absence button on the blue left hand side menu in Omnia
    • Using the Absentee tile on the front of the MLC School app
  • As the Trials approach, please be mindful of the procedure on applying for Illness and Misadventure. Click here for information about how to submit an Illness and Misadventure Form on Omnia.
  • The uniform policy highlighted in the Welcome to Term 3 email sent last week is a very helpful guide on the expectations around uniform, specifically jewellery. Click here for the letter.

MLC School Triumphs at the 2025 Senior School Fencing Championships

The 2025 Senior School Fencing Championships held at Sydney Olympic Park brought together some of the most talented young fencers from across the region—and among them, the MLC School team shone brilliantly.

Demonstrating exceptional skill, teamwork, and determination, the MLC School fencing team returned home with a haul of medals, marking the event as one of the most successful in recent school history.

A Haul of Gold, Silver, and Bronze

MLC School dominated in both the Teams Foil and Epee events, securing two Gold medals and one Silver, underscoring their strength in group performance and tactical cohesion. The teamwork and communication among the fencers were evident as they confidently advanced through rounds against strong competition.

In addition to team success, individual brilliance lit up the piste. Felicia Hannah (Year 12) earned a Bronze medal in the Women’s Foil, showcasing her technical finesse and competitive spirit. In the Women’s Epee, Elena Sun (Year 11) also claimed a Bronze, proving her resilience and sharp tactical thinking in one of the most physically demanding fencing disciplines.

Hockey

MLC01:

‘At our first game of the term, MLC01 had a great 2-0 win over Frensham, despite playing on a grass field in heavy fog. Playing through the tough conditions, all of us had some great moments during the game, keeping calm and showcasing some great hockey. Everyone has worked hard and come back to the new term stronger which was clear on the weekend. With a few new additions to the team, we are looking forward to the rest of the season.’
Evelyn Kerr (Year 11)

MLC02:

‘Our first game back was a grass game at Frensham, and it was forecasted to rain the day before. We not only got out there in the freezing cold, but we worked together and won the game. It was tight game in the first half at 0-0 then we made some changes to our game plan and scored 2 goals. A shout out to our amazing defenders who didn’t let anything past them.’
Alannah Ng (Year 7)

Back by Popular Demand: Science / DofE Combined Exmouth Journey Returns in 2026!

Back by Popular Demand: Science / DofE Combined Exmouth Journey Returns in 2026!

After two years of glowing feedback from both students, parents and teachers, one of MLC School’s most talked-about experiences is back for 2026!

We’re excited to announce the Year 11 (2026), DofE / Science Combined Exmouth Adventurous Journey, will again be offered in 2026, taking place during the Term 2 school holidays between Tuesday 7 April to 15 April 2026 . This unique opportunity brings together the academic richness of science fieldwork with the challenge and achievement of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Adventurous Journey (AJ) — all set against the breathtaking natural beauty of Western Australia’s Ningaloo Coast.

Whether you’re a student passionate about science, committed to completing your DofE Gold, or both — this journey offers something truly extraordinary:
  • 🧪 Hands-on science content aligned with curriculum outcomes for students studying science.

  • 🛶 Kayaking through some of the most spectacular reefs and marine ecosystems in Australia.

  • 🐋 An optional swim with whale sharks — a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a highlight for many past participants.

Feedback from previous years has been overwhelmingly positive, with students praising the balance of education and adventure, and parents commending the careful planning, safety, and depth of learning involved.

Due to environmental protection regulations, places are strictly limited — and they fill fast. We strongly encourage families to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

This is more than a journey — it’s an unforgettable life experience combining challenge, science, and the stunning natural world. We can’t wait to see another group of MLC School students embrace this opportunity in 2026!

DofE Team’s Holiday Efforts Lead to 2025/26 Adventurous Journey Planner

DofE Team’s Holiday Efforts Lead to 2025/26 Adventurous Journey Planner

While many enjoyed a well-earned break over the school holidays, the MLC School Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Team was hard at work behind the scenes — planning, coordinating, and fine-tuning an exciting new resource for our students and families.

We’re proud to launch the 2025/26 Adventurous Journey Planner, a comprehensive guide to help students and their families explore the full range of options available for their DofE Adventurous Journeys. Developed across two school years, this planner reflects the team’s dedication to ensuring every participant has a clear path forward—whether they’re just starting their Bronze or preparing for a challenging Gold expedition.  The document will be a living document and will be updated as more trips come on line.

📌 Stay up to date and access key information
👉 Visit the MLC DofE Padlet page

We encourage all parents and participants to take a moment to review the planner, discuss journey options at home, and reach out to the DofE team with any questions. This is your chance to get ahead, plan wisely, and make the most of every opportunity the DofE program has to offer.  Don’t forget the DofE Team meet every Monday lunchtime in SCG01.

A big thank you to the DofE team for their time, energy, and passion — ensuring another strong year of growth, adventure, and achievement for our students.

Debating Coaches Attain Success at International Competition

Debating Coaches Attain Success at International Competition

The Debating and Public Speaking coaches at MLC School are instrumental in facilitating the achievements of our teams. Most coaches are distinguished university debaters who are committed to fostering continual improvement among students each week. This dedication was exemplified by Old Girl Jade di Girolamo (2022) and Angus MacGregor, who travelled to Guangzhou, China, in July to represent the University of Sydney at the Australasian University Debating Championships.

Both Jade and Angus were selected for the same team, participating in eight rounds and progressing to the partial quarter-finals. Their performance secured a fifth-place ranking overall out of 50 competing teams, reflecting a significant achievement. Additionally, Angus was named the 20th best speaker and Jade the 22nd best speaker out of 150 participants.

Our coaches exemplify the benefits that involvement in co-curricular activities can provide, demonstrating the array of opportunities available to students who choose to participate during their school years and continue their engagement into university.
