Newsletter | Term 2, Week 8 2023 - 16 June 2023

From the Principal

Despite this having been only a four-day week, it has been filled with exciting performances, exhibitions, and competitions, highlighting the many opportunities available to MLC School students.

Pride and Prejudice

Like many in our community, I had the pleasure of attending the Senior Drama Production of Pride and Prejudice. While Pride and Prejudice is a timeless love story, the MLC School production’s clever modern updates brought the stories and personalities to life for even the youngest in the audience.

It was evident from the quality of the performances that the cast had spent countless hours in rehearsal, and our Year 10 and Year 11 students worked tirelessly to make sure that the performers were suitably attired and made up, assisted with ticketing, and kept the back of house running smoothly. Similarly, the creativity and skill of our Year 11 Entertainment students who helped to construct and paint the set and organise the sound and lighting was exceptional.

Directors Lisa Jinga and Kellie Cogin, and Dance, Drama and Entertainment (DDE) staff member Bojana Kvrgic and all those involved are to be congratulated on their creativity and enthusiasm; and thanked for the countless hours of hard work that they contributed to assist the cast and crew to bring the production to the stage.

Congratulations to all involved.

Illuminate

On Wednesday night the Design, Art, and Technology (DART) Department hosted Illuminate – a celebration of the creative and performing arts at MLC School. This year’s theme ‘Reach for the Stars’ was interpreted in different ways by students from across the School. The exhibitions included Junior School portraits, a contribution from the Japanese Culture Club, a collaborative paper installation, multimedia, and technology projects.

The much anticipated interhouse Lego competition was hotly contested, with each House team designing and building their concept for ‘Let’s go to outer space.’ The teams showed impressive creativity and collaboration as did those students who took the opportunity to build with Lego on the night.

As well as enjoying the various exhibits we were entertained by our dancers, vocalists, and musicians throughout the night, making Illuminate a true celebration of the Arts at MLC School.

Thank you to everyone involved especially Head of DART Sally Marks, Assistant Head of DART and Illuminate coordinator Camille Softley, Caitlin White, Lesley Snelgrove, Renee Willemsen, Victoria Bradshaw, Bede Schofield and Marie Cassar, DART Captain Annabelle Twomey (Year 12) and the Members of the Art & Design Society.

Junior School Athletics Carnival

This week we also held the Junior School Athletics carnival at Sydney Olympic Park, and it was wonderful to see students and staff and many parents enjoying the sunshine and excitement. The day was filled with energetic performances and enthusiastic cheers from each of the Houses. I have mentioned before that I am always impressed by the way that MLC School students support each other and celebrate each other’s achievements, and this was very much on display at the Athletics Carnival. Thank you to the MLC School Sports Department and all members of staff whose efforts made the day such a success.

Congratulations to our Pom and Hip Hop teams

Congratulations to all those who competed at the AASCF Winterfest Competition held at Sydney Showground last Saturday 10 June 2023. This is a hotly contested event with the top schools from across the region competing. Details of the teams’ excellent results can be found here. Thanks to Jenna Skepper and the Pom and Hip Hop coaches for providing our students with this wonderful opportunity.

Principal’s Sabbatical Leave – Term 3

At the start of Term 3, I will be on Sabbatical leave, returning on 4 September 2023. During this time, Melissa (Mel) Boyd will be the Acting Principal, Linda Emms the Acting Deputy Principal, Penny Pachos the Acting Head of Learning and Teaching – Senior School and Natalie (Nat) Hird the Acting Head of Learning and Teaching – Junior School.

At the Coffee with the Principal held on Wednesday 14 June 2023, several parents commented how much they appreciated Mel’s leadership and positive influence on the School, and I have had several emails echoing the same sentiment. I couldn’t agree more and have great confidence that in my absence, she, Linda, Penny, and Nat will do a terrific job. We introduce Melissa Boyd to the MLC School community in this video. It showcases Mel’s journey and her exceptional skills, passion and dedication to her students and to learning.

During my leave, I will be focusing my research on Education and Workplace futures. The world has shifted rapidly since we wrote our last strategic plan, with the emergence of COVID-19 and Artificial Intelligence dramatically changing the educational landscape and the workplace. As well as visiting schools locally and internationally, I will be meeting with educators in non-school settings and undertaking a leadership course at the Centre for Creative Leadership in Colorado with leaders from across the world (most of whom will not be educators). I look forward to sharing my findings upon my return.

MLC School Shines at AASCF Winterfest Competition

We are thrilled to announce the outstanding achievements of our Junior and Senior School Pom and Hip Hop teams at the recent AASCF Winterfest Competition held at Sydney Showground last Saturday 10 June 2023. The event showcased the immense talent and dedication of our students as they competed against some of the top schools in the region.

In the Primary School Scholastic division, our Year 3 to Year 6 Pom team demonstrated their incredible skills and teamwork, securing a wonderful 3rd place finish. Their performance was filled with huge smiles and energy that had the whole crowd clapping along.

Not to be outdone, our Junior School Hip Hop team gave a fun and exciting performance that earned them a well-deserved 2nd place. Their infectious enthusiasm impressed both the judges and spectators alike. Congratulations to these talented dancers for their exceptional achievement.

Meanwhile our Year 7 to Year 12 Hip Hop crews went head-to-head along an impressive line-up of remarkable high school teams. With scoring down to the decimal place, our teams were unable to hit the top three rankings, however they had the crowd cheering and on their feet! The Senior Hip Hop team’s performance then backed up a big weekend with an in-house performance of their items at the MLC School Illuminate Festival on Wednesday night to showcase their talent. Well done girls!

Our next Pom and Hip Hop AASCF competition, Dance Battle, will be held in August at the Quay Centre, Sydney Olympic Park. This event is closely followed by the 2023 Dance Showcase titled Spotlight: Women of Hollywood on Sunday 3 September 2023 at NIDA Parade Theatre.

None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the guidance and support of our dedicated teachers. We extend our deepest appreciation to Ms Jess, Miss Madi, Miss Maya, and Miss Afamia for their unwavering commitment and exceptional choreography. Their passion for dance and their ability to inspire our students has undoubtedly played a significant role in their success.

The MLC School community is incredibly proud of our AASCF teams. Your achievements not only highlight your exceptional skills but also reflect the courage, teamwork and tenacity that are deeply ingrained into our School’s culture.

More photos will be added to the MLC School Facebook page shortly.

Pride and Prejudice Drama Production

Last week, our senior students in conjunction with boys from Newington College, performed five performances of Jane Austen’s classic, Pride and Prejudice. The students rehearsed every Wednesday and Sunday for two terms, showing dedication, creativity and energy. All their efforts were rewarded by sell out performances each night with wonderful feedback, both in person and via email, that focused on the students’ passion and professionalism. Special mention must also go to our crew who negotiated over 100 props and set pieces and moved the set on stage seamlessly. The seminal experience has seen new friendships form and developed a belief in our students that the theatre is a wonderful vehicle to educate both young and old. Indeed, our Year 7 and Year 8 students reported how much they enjoyed the show.

I must thank Kellie Cogin, Bojana Kvrgic and the Dance, Drama and Entertainment (DDE) staff for all their support and the countless other staff members who assisted; Pam McGowan, Robyn Langford, Liane Simpson, Kylie Bickerstaff, Con the Caterer, Wendy Allen and the Marketing and Community Relations department, especially Amelia Morgano and Jillian Avramis for their help.

We look forward to seeing you at our next production.

Illuminate

It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase our girls’ creative talents during this week’s Illuminate Festival, a joint initiative with our Junior School Art and STEM Departments and the Senior School. This is our own version of Vivid! The artistic achievements of all our students never cease to amaze me, and this year’s festival did not disappoint. Congratulations to all students involved.

Kindergarten to Year 5 Athletics Carnival

It was great to see so many parents and grandparents dressed in House colours at the Kindergarten to Year 5 Athletics Carnival at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Warm Up Track on Thursday. The weather was perfect, as was the enthusiastic House spirit on and off the field. The girls (along with the staff and many parents) were dressed up in their House colours and they cheered for their team. The winning House and age campions will be presented at our final Term 2 assembly next Thursday.

More photos from the day will be shared on the MLC School Facebook page soon.

Pre-K Take Over the Junior School Campus

Whilst Kindergarten to Year 5 students were at their Athletics Carnival, Pre-K decided to look after the campus. They visited Illuminate, and then the Junior School studios. They noticed how tall the Year 5 girls are, played on the ‘big girl’s’ yard and even took over the Head of Junior School’s office!

Groove

Next Wednesday 21 June 2023, we host Groove at the Camelot Lounge in Marrickville. This is an opportunity for our jazz musicians from Year 5 and Year 6, with our Senior School students, to perform in a public venue.

From the Deputy Head of Junior School – Wellbeing – The Golden Rule

Ever heard of the ‘Golden Rule’ before? Do you teach it to your children?

‘Treat others how you want to be treated.’

This ‘Golden Rule’ is one of the oldest and most universally agreed upon moral principles in human history according to Kabashinski & Schwartz (Greater Good Magazine, June 2023).

This principle forms the basis of how we view and treat others. It is the basis of the work of the United Nations, charities, the building of personal and collective character and underpins our School Values of Compassion and Respect.

Interestingly, whilst this Golden Rule might be unique to Christianity, many cultures/religions teach that same principle, just using different wording. According to Kabashinski & Schwartz:

While the wisdom captured in the Golden Rule has long been hailed as a universal principle found in all religions, there is no evidence that the term itself is widely used across all cultures. In African cultures, the idea of respect and reciprocity is enshrined in the term ubuntu. At the core of the Confucian ethic is the term zhongshu (to refrain from actions that may upset or hurt others). And while Al-Ghazali, one of the most influential Muslim scholars, wrote tirelessly about the Golden Rule, there are several other phrases and expressions in Islam that express the importance of justice, compassion, altruism, and being a good neighbour. It’s possible that while the ideal of the Golden Rule may still be important, different cultural and ethnic groups in our nation are using other terms.

When I talk to the girls about embodying our four School Values we often talk about treating others as they want to be treated. It is an important principle to have in our friendships, our classrooms, our families and in other groups we belong to. The Golden Rule elevates the ideals of selflessness and care essential to a future grounded in the pursuit of respect, justice, peace, and compassion.

Maybe the ‘Golden Rule’ can be a topic of discussion at your dinner table this weekend.

Pre-K in charge of the Junior School for a day

On Thursday 15 June 2023, with Kindergarten to Year 5 students attending their Athletics Carnival, Daniel Sandral, Head of Junior School, left the Pre-K girls in charge of Junior School. ‘That’s a big responsibility’ said Audrey and all the students thought about what it would entail.

Since we had the Junior School to ourselves, during the morning meeting the girls thought of what they would like to do on this special day. On top of their list was ‘to visit the big girls’ classroom/studios’. There was a rare silence within the Junior School as the Pre-K students walked into every Year studio admiring the work the ‘big girls’ have done in each class. What the girls noticed as they moved through the Year groups was that the furniture started getting bigger. They sat on Year 4 chairs and felt like Goldilocks ‘this chair is too big!’. The finale was reaching our Year 5M buddies’ studio and looking at their work. The fun continued with a visit to the Senior School to view Illuminate artworks and having our own running race on our lawn. Overseeing the Junior School was a lot of fun.

Year 6 students learn to write narratives

Writing is an integral part of learning at MLC School. Throughout this term, Year 6 students have been exploring how to write narratives – easier said than done! The girls faced a number of challenges. The hardest of all was condensing ideas into a short, logical sequence that had a beginning, middle and end. Class 6F explored many ways to create exciting narratives. The process culminated in personifying three items found in the classroom:

  • Scissors
  • A ball
  • A lunchbox

The girls wrote a story from the perspective of one of these items. After a process of self and peer editing, exciting stories evolved. To celebrate the achievements with this writing task, we invited Class 4C to join us. The stories were shared and enjoyed. The Year 4 girls were then asked to help create some illustrations for the stories. The finished products have been collated into a book of short stories to be available in the Junior School library.

Learning and sharing across the grades – collaboration at its best.

Parent Library in the MLC Junior School

Parent Library in the MLC Junior School

Have you recently looked at our parent collection in the Junior School library? If not, now might be a great time to have a look.

Our Parent Library at MLC Junior School is designed to provide you with information on a wide range of issues and topics. Our growing collection includes information on;

  • Health and Nutrition
  • Parent/Child Relationships
  • Girls’ Issues
  • Parenting
  • Tweens

One of the newest books in our collection is TWEENS What kids need NOW, before the teenage years by Michelle Mitchell, a recent visitor to the Junior School. Her book embodies a very specific stage of development that once understood will revolutionise the way you parent, educate and support those in your care.

In Tweens, award-winning parenting educator Michelle Mitchell explains that this is the most rapid period of development since toddlerhood. Right now, before the full pressures of high school hit, you have a window of opportunity that can change the trajectory of adolescence and beyond.

Using the results from her recent survey of more than 2000 parents and tweens, along with interviews with experts, Michelle compassionately guides parents through their children’s friendship issues, mood swings, confidence crises, technology habits, sibling rivalry, body image concerns and seemingly inexplicable behaviour. She provides invaluable practical advice and groundbreaking research from leading organisations to reassure parents that tweens are ready to be switched on to their potential, and every trusted adult in their lives can be a part of that process.

Borrowing Information

Browse and submit a request to borrow online by accessing the Junior School Library Guide here (Password: @MLC). Or pop in to the Library before school, from 8am, to view our parent collection in the Junior School Library.

Parents are welcome to borrow from the Parent Library for a period of two weeks, which can be extended at your request.

Let us know of any titles or topics that you think we could add.

In addition, we have started a book swap for parents and staff which sits beside the Parent Library. Please take from or add to this.

From the Head of Senior School

As we come to the end of the term I have been reflecting on what has been one of the busiest but most fulfilling terms that I have been involved with.

Just this week we have reflected together in our communion chapel, celebrated our fabulous Design, Art and Technology (DART), music and dance students at an absolutely beautiful Illuminate, contemplated the Year 8 subject selection options with our Year 8 families and topped the week off with the highly anticipated Prescott Puppy Pageant!

We now look toward Round Square week for our final week of term. The week is packed with community, service and sustainability initiatives and I am once again so proud of our School and the opportunities our students have to grow and learn. So many of these initiatives are student led with the unwavering support of our dedicated and forward-thinking staff which is key to developing confidence and resilience.

The future certainly looks bright with MLC School girls illuminating the way!

Joanna Graffen
Head of Senior School

From the Deputy Head of Senior School – Pastoral

It has been a busy time at MLC School and has been refreshing to see so many of our students thriving and showcasing their talents in a range of school activities across sport, music and the arts.

On Friday 2 June 2023, nine student from Year 9 participated in yLead’s Altitude Day. Altitude Day is an experience designed to empower Year 9 students during this important stage in their school journey. Students engaged in energising group activities and inspirational presentations to support them in becoming active and inspiring role models and leaders of our school. Students identified their current capacities and future opportunities and explored areas such as positive decision making, overcoming adversity and developing confidence to make positive change. Students were able to network and step outside their comfort zones to further explore the meaning of leadership and reflect on the type of leader they would like to be.

Friday 8 June 2023, saw students in Year 7 to Year 12 participate in a range of workshops and presentations from Elephant Ed. Consent and positive relationships were the key topics. Students explored a range of issues related to promoting safe, fulfilling and enjoyable relationships in person and online, and developing the skills and attitudes to make responsible and safe choices that promote and protect their own health and safety and the wellbeing of others.

MLC School students have also attended Burwood Council’s Youth Advisory Board, and others participated in leading wellbeing workshops at Knox Grammar School. To further complement our programs and support our students, on Wednesday 19 July 2023 we will welcome leading drug and alcohol expert Paul Dillon from DARTA to present to students in Year 10 to Year 12 on the crucial topics of safety and risk.

Chaplain’s Corner

On Tuesday at lunchtime, 10 candles were lit in our chapel and prayers offered to remember the victims of the fatal crash that claimed the lives of 10 wedding guests in the Hunter Valley last Sunday. It was heartening to see our girls walk into the chapel to pay their respects and acknowledge this horrific incident in a compassionate and courageous manner…they are truly daughters of the light.

Rev Viniana Ravetali
Senior Chaplain

Year 7

I hope you had a lovely long weekend (such a distant memory!) and have enjoyed the four day week.

As we look forward to the last week of term, we have enjoyed another busy week this week with the cohort participating in so many exciting events and fundraisers. But firstly, a big congratulations to our Year 7 Cross Country runners, Ruth Costello (Year 7) placed 2nd at CIS Cross Country last Friday and Darcy Costello (Year 7) place 6th, which qualified them both for the CIS team heading to NSW Allschools next term. Another massive congratulations to Ruth, Darcy and Noelle Foo (Year 7) and Veronica Pan (Year 7) who placed 1st as a team at the CIS event, proving, yet again, that team work makes the dream work. Go MLC School!

If you attended Illuminate on Wednesday evening you would have witnessed some amazing installations from our students and also some truly stunning works of art from our Year 7 students. I am constantly in awe of our students and their neverending talents. Congratulations to all our girls who worked so hard in class and out of class to present a truly magical 2023 Illuminate.

Year 7 students were an outstanding force at the Senior School Athletics Championship Trials yesterday. The athletes were strong across the board in both the 12 and 13 age groups. We look froward to the exciting results at assembly on Monday.

The girls had an absolute blast at the Prescott House Puppy Pageant today. This is such an exciting event on our House calendar and an opportunity for our MLC School pooches to strut their stuff for charity. Thank you Prescott House for yet another wonderful event.

Next week is Round Square week and again, so much to do! Please note that there are fundraising events throughout the week, culminating in a Mufti Day on Friday. A reminder that Mufti outfits are to be appropriate attire – no midriff clothing, short shorts, or strappy shirts; besides, it’s just too cold at the moment for these items! The girls will receive the full calendar of events in their weekly update on Sunday evening.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Year 8

There has been lots of excitement running through the Year group with the upcoming Year 9 2024 elective selection process underway. Thank you to all the families who joined us last night for the webinar that outlined the subjects and processes. Over the coming few days, Heads of Department will each be speaking to the Year 8 students about each of the elective options that are on offer in their subject area. It will be a lot of information to take in and I encourage all students to take time to read the Curriculum Guide before making their choices. The curriculum guide and webinar recording from last night can be found here.

Year 8 students are also excited that their big Immersion presentations will be finalised over the weekend and on display next week. They have been working very well in the Immersion sessions and have been energised with their projects following the camp experience. I am really looking forward to seeing their final projects and the culmination of a term of immersive learning.

Have a great weekend, and as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Year 8 students learn more about Year 9 2024 PASS

Year 8 students are eagerly anticipating the selection of their Year 9 electives and this week in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) lessons, students engaged in a range of activities to give them a taste of what the Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) subject entails.

Students used Garmin watches to learn how to track their heart rate, explored the human body using the Virtuali-tee app that works in conjunction with an augmented reality t-shirt to bring learning to life, and took a look inside various body systems with the Meta Quest 2 all-in-one VR headset. PASS is two-year course where students learn about concepts and topics related to body systems, how to promote and engage in active lifestyles, the different types of training and energy systems required to be successful in various sports, participating with safety (culminating in a three-day skiing trip) and the importance of nutrition to performance, health and physical activity.

If you have any questions about the elective, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Year 9

A short, quiet focused week was had for Year 9 students this week with many spending their time refining, editing and submitting their assessment tasks for this term.

On Wednesday, our Middle Years Leaders along with School Vice-Captain (Year 6 to Year 9) Madhavi Chauhan (Year 12) presented their final Middle Years Assembly for the term. They shared in the successes of their peers and recognised the many and varied events occurring at the School, this week and next.

Thursday, during Luminary, was a time for pause and relaxation. Students were guided through a meditation to take a moment to be mindful and to try and centre themselves during a busy week. Martina Stolzi brought in her colourful hula hoops and many students took on the opportunity to learn or practice a new, enjoyable skill.

Friday saw us have our final Year Meeting of the term. I took the opportunity to remind students to make the most of a three-week break from school. Whether they are travelling or not it is the opportunity to unwind, relax and enjoy some time away from the sometimes chaotic and busy experience of being in Year 9.

A reminder to all students that the blazer is the external garment of the Winter Uniform. It must be worn to and from School each day (even if you are only moving from training onto the main campus).

Week 9 Overview – Monday 19 June to Friday 23 June 2023

Year 10

Illuminate 2023 lit up the Senior Centre this week with lots of contributions and beautiful art pieces from Year 10 students. The Photography and Digital Media exhibition was excellent, with portraits and images that shone from the wall on Level 1. Our image this week is of Charlotte Penny (Year 10) and Cassia Davies (Year 10) generously giving their time to help younger students on the origami stall.

The Senior Years Drama Production last week was an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, with Amelia Armstrong (Year 10) and Christina Coffey (Year 10) in the cast and Olivia Walker (Year 10) on stage crew. They worked incredibly hard in rehearsal and with the Year 11 and Year 12 students to bring the Austen classic to life in the Drama Theatre.

On Thursday, Year 10 students had the opportunity to complete the Mission Australia Youth Survey. Further information about the survey can be found here. The survey is confidential and anonymous and is designed to be a snapshot of Australian youth and their concerns.

Uniform for Year 10 students continues to be monitored as students enter campus every morning. Girls are directed to the Head of Year office and Wellbeing Centre to obtain a uniform pass if needed. The girls are very good at doing this and are taking responsibility for their uniform. A reminder that MLC School hoodies and sports uniform are not to be worn, unless for sport or Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) classes. Jumpers and cardigans need to be worn with the School blazer when entering campus and leaving school.

Year 11

As the term begins to draw to a close, there are still many events happening at School. Next week we will be celebrating Round Square week and I know that Year 11 students have been an integral part of the planning for this.

On Friday 9 June 2023, I accompanied Sara Yaqub (Year 11), Ava Dean (Year 11), Divya Sharma (Year 11) and Matilda Banfield (Year 11) to the Student Wellbeing Conference at Knox Grammar School. Here’s what they had to say about it:

‘We were given the opportunity to go to a Student Wellbeing Conference at Knox Grammar School where we were able to connect and share our ideas with students from all across Sydney. We participated in student led workshops that gave us a deeper understanding of what wellbeing entails and different factors that contributed to improving student wellbeing. These valuable insights reminded us to invest in our wellbeing, build meaningful connections by expressing gratitude for the positives within our lives, and balance our professional and personal lives. We left the conference with innovative ideas that we hope MLC School will be able to implement to allow all students to gain further knowledge regarding their own understanding of personal wellbeing.’

On Wednesday this week, the School enjoyed Illuminate, curated by our fabulous Design, Art and Technology (DART) Department. It was brilliant to see the Year 11 work on display; we clearly have a lot of talented artists and I was impressed by the conceptual maturity of their work. To finish off the week, the Year group enjoyed our final Big Sister/Little Sister session of the term, playing games together in the sun.

Year 11 students have successfully navigated a hectic few weeks and can now look forward to the break and some time out. It’s important that each student has a clear idea of what they would like to achieve over the holidays and that they put together a plan for when this will happen. There are a few assessments early next term, but the main priority should be consolidating subject knowledge and skills ahead of the Term 3 assessment block in Week 6 and Week 7 (Monday 21 August to Friday 1 September 2023). The last week of this term is a great opportunity for students to clarify with their subject teachers exactly what they need to do.

Year 12

It was like Christmas when the Year 12 students received their 2023 jerseys yesterday. Many teachers remarked how lovely it was to see them so happy and sharing this moment. After the hard work on academics, co-curricular and special events this term it was a wonderful time of celebration and providing an insight into the exciting celebrations to look forward to next term.

Illuminate on Wednesday night was a fun and inspiring arts festival at School. I was an extremely proud Head of Year watching Year 12 students sing, dance, model textiles, and displaying collaborations and their various stalls. It was a very enjoyable evening to see what everyone has been busy working on.

I hope you enjoyed what is a final parent teacher night for many of you, if not the last for your Year 12 student.

Year 12 students received their Trial Examination timetables from Penny Pachos, Deputy Head of Senior School – Academic, today. The respective timetables can be found in the links below:

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me by emailing arenwick@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au or calling 02 8741 3278, if you have any queries, or concerns or simply wish to touch base.

Celebrate Year 12 in a Different Way

Celebrate Year 12 in a Different Way

Year 12 is an important time in your daughter’s life. Over the years she has dared to be more and has left her mark on the MLC School landscape. Why not leave something lasting at the School to celebrate her time here?

A gift of a paver in your daughter’s name is a permanent tribute to her and your family’s involvement with MLC School. It can include a couple of brief lines about her activities or interests.

Order a paver by Friday 21 July 2023  to ensure that your daughter will be able to see her name in the entry way of the school grounds on her last day of school. Orders received after that date will be laid a little later.

Though it seems that your daughter’s time at MLC School is coming to an end, her connection here will never fade; she will always be part of the fabric of the School, as one of our cherished Old Girls. A paver is a tangible way to provide a lasting memory.

More information about inscriptions and cost can be found here.

For enquiries please contact MLC School Development Manager Heleen Fourie, or MLC School Archivist, Barbara Hoffman.

Sports News – Umpiring, Netball, Volleyball and Swimming

Umpiring News

The ERNA Umpire Committee would like to congratulate Maya Gupta (Year 10) and Eloise Ward (Year 10) on receiving their ERNA Umpiring Badge on Saturday 3 June 2023. Well done and we can’t wait to see you progress further.

Netball News

Crazy Hair and Sock day is happening at ERNA on Saturday 24 June 2023 so let’s get behind the cause!

Netballers are asked to wear their craziest socks and silliest locks and donate to the Kids’ Cancer Project to help raise awareness and valuable funds for research.

ERNA Executive will be walking around the courts at Meadowbank and Brush Farm accepting donations or members can use the QR code below to donate online.

Volleyball News

Well done to Tascha Ireland (Year 10) and Amelia McNamara (Year 10) who have enjoyed a day immersed in volleyball at Sydney Olympic Park. They played with the CIS team in the NSW All Schools Tri Series. As the youngest girls in the team, it was a great experience and opportunity to play with and against high level players. Unfortunately the CIS team did not make the finals, but it was a valuable collaborative experience and a day to celebrate their passion for volleyball.

Swimming News

Congratulations to Emi Liu (Year 2) who participated in the Sydney Metro Northwest 2023 winter championships at SOPAC. Emi swam in the 10 and under 50m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle. She was among one of the youngest girls there being only 7 years old. In Backstroke she achieved an overall result of 3rd, winning a bronze medal. In Freestyle she placed 6th with a fantastic 8.87 second PB! It was a great result.

Important Procedures for Sport Absences from Sport

What to do when you are not able to make training or a game

On the rare occasions that it may be necessary for a player to miss training or a competition, please follow these instructions.

  • If the inability to attend is known in advance – a written explanation (email) from the player’s parent/guardian is to be given to the coach and sports department in advance. This notice should be given as early as possible.
  • If the player is absent from school on the day of training or on competition day – the player’s parent/guardian is asked to advise the coach and sports department of their child’s absence from training or the game.
  • Do not ask your friends or team mates to give your coach the message
  • Do give as much notice as possible
  • If there is a clash with another sport or school event, please speak with the Sports Department to determine which game/event you should attend.

Please Note: Continued failure to attend training or competitions without a timely written explanation is unacceptable and may jeopardise the player’s continued involvement in sport.

A member of the Sports Department will contact parents/guardians of students whose non-attendance at training or games is not notified in the correct manner.

Students are required to attend 90% of all sessions involved with their sport (training and matches).

If Frensham is in your Saturday sport fixtures, your attendance at Frensham is compulsory to be awarded your pocket.

Wet Weather

What do I do if it is Wet Weather?
While on most occasions we would not cancel training for wet weather, cancellations may occur if rain is too heavy to train in or weather conditions deem it unsafe. Additionally, due to safe distancing measures and government guidelines, we may be required to cancel training when we cannot accommodate students safely in an indoor space.

For morning training

The decision to cancel any morning training sessions will be made by 8pm the night before training.

Wet weather cancellations will be posted on the MLC School Sport Facebook page, followed by an email.

No Facebook post, or email means that activities will still go ahead.

For after school training

The decision to cancel any after school training sessions will be made by 1pm on the day of training.

Wet weather cancellations will be posted on the MLC School Sport Facebook page, followed by an email.

On Saturdays

If you are playing an IPSHA Sport, please use this link to take you to the IPSHA Wet Weather site.

Once on the site, select your venue and there will be a notification if your venue is closed. IPSHA normally make a decision by 7am.

If you are playing an IGSA Sport, visit https://igsasport.spawtz.com/. The IGSA website will let you know if your venue is closed or open.

When possible, we will also post the cancellations on our Sport Facebook page.

On all occasions, it is the individuals’ responsibility to check the wet weather information. The Sports Department, coaches and managers are not always in a position to relay any game cancellations.

Piano Festival 2023

The MLC School Piano Festival was held on Friday 9 June 2023 across three different venues – The Daphne Line Hall, Chapel and Music Auditorium. More than 60 students from Kindergarten to Year 12 performed in front of their parents, teachers and peers. It was a great showcase of all their talent, hard work and enthusiasm. There were even two groups of 8-hands piano ensembles, and some teacher-and-student piano duets.

A big thank you to all the students who participated, to the parents for their continuous support and encouragement, and to the team of piano tutors and Music staff who helped make this event happen.

Applications for Australian Youth Orchestra programs now open

The Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) (now led by CEO Kimbali Harding (1997), MLC School Music Captain) offers a wide range of programs for young musicians. From the flagship Australian Youth Orchestra, to National Music Camp and Young Symphonists, these programs aim to provide students with immersive, engaging, and challenging training across multiple periods each year, attracting the hardest working and most driven students from across the nation.

As an alumnus of the AYO myself, I highly recommend anyone who loves making music or is considering studying music at a tertiary level apply to audition.

The programs MLC School students might be interested in are Young Symphonists, National Music Camp, and the Australian Youth Orchestra.

Experience the wonderful world of Theatresports

Join us! New places open for Term 3 for a limited time

We are so excited to announce that our Theatresports Club, which was previously booked out, is expanding with new places now available for Term 3. Get in quick as places are limited.

Theatresports is a form of improvisational theatre that uses the format of a competition for dramatic effect. Theatresports is for all levels of experience.

Each term students work through the Theatresports handbook in addition to improvisational activities focused on increasing the girl’s confidence in performance and devising. Improvisation is such a fun way to strengthen their communication skills while exercising their imagination and storytelling abilities. Most importantly we have fun and lots of laughs!

MLC School participates annually in the Theatresports Schools Challenge, run by Impro Australia in which they compete in teams of three to five against other schools, creating one-, two- and three-minute improvised scenes live on stage, judged and scored by improvisation professionals. Eisteddfod opportunities are also available.

Our lessons are focused on embracing mistakes, nurturing confidence and highlighting the importance of working together as a team. Oh and of course lots of laughter!

Places available: 4
Time: Tuesday 3.20pm–4.50pm
Location: G33
Cost: $297 per term (inc. GST)

Your child’s $100 Creative Kids Voucher can be used towards fees for this program.

Inner West Eisteddfod – The Speech and Drama Studio

A huge congratulations to the following students for their outstanding performances:

Prepared Speech 11 years

  • Ella Rose Zraika (Year 6) – Highly commended

Prepared Speech 15-16 years

  • Jody Feng (Year 11) – 3rd Place

‘On the 3rd of June, I participated in my last Inner West Eisteddfod. As someone who is completing their 13th year of speech and drama, the opportunities and experiences along the way have been fantastic. Performing at eisteddfods and exams have allowed me to play out scripts, or write my own personal speech. Having these chances to perform and present have also helped me grow up confident in public speaking which I am very grateful for.” – Jody Feng (Year 11)

‘The Eisteddfods have been challenging but also rewarding. It isn’t always easy facing an audience and performing, however through these experiences I have gained so much confidence and multiple skills. My speech and drama lessons have paved the way for me to face the challenge of eisteddfods, all whilst having fun and being an enjoyable experience. My achievements would not have been possible without the wonderful support from Ms Fort and Ms Brian.’ – Ella Rose Zraika (Year 6)
