From the Principal

“Why did you become a teacher?”

“Do you miss being in the classroom now that you’re a Principal?”

“What’s your favourite part of being a Principal and your least favourite part?”

Welcome to Year 5’s surprise episode of Q and A with Ms Moloney!

As I made my way down to Junior School earlier this week looking forward to an informal visit to 5F, little did I know what awaited me. In true MLC School style, the students had decided that my visit was an opportunity not to be wasted and upon arrival, I was invited to take a seat at the front of the room and participate in their version of Q and A.

After answering the introductory questions above, the students really ‘turned up the heat’ demonstrating the immense amount of thought, planning and preparation that they had put into their questions:

“What are the advantages of having an Indigenous program at MLC School? Why do you think it is important that students like me are part of the MLC School community? What can the rest of the community learn from having us here.?”

And “how much does the School have to change when visually impaired people join the School? What can the rest of the community learn from having us here.?”

So, what were my answers?

The first question is particularly timely given that Reconciliation Week is upon us. Having Indigenous students at MLC School is important because their presence helps all students and staff grow in understanding, respect and connection, and ensures that our understanding of Indigenous culture is real by bringing valuable cultures, histories, and perspectives into everyday learning. As a Uniting Church school, we are committed to reconciliation by walking together in truth, respect, and mutual understanding with First Nations peoples.

Having visually impaired students has helped us understand inclusion, empathy, adaptability, and different ways of experiencing the world. While we have had to make some small physical adaptations, much of the change has been in us. These students have taught us that there is more than one way to learn, communicate and succeed, and that a strong school community is one where everyone is valued and supported. I have also learnt a lot about communication technology and different ways of teaching.

Fortunately, there were also some less challenging questions,

“You are sometimes part of the MLC School orchestra. We know you are busy, so what made you join the orchestra?”

I love playing music and when possible, I do love to play in our School orchestra although I sometimes find it hard to get to rehearsals. The main reason is that I am a very average double bass player and I love to play alongside our students who are excellent; it is my opportunity to learn from them and for students to see that learning is something that continues throughout life. Being part of a high-quality musical performance is also one of the most memorable things that you can do.

I am exceptionally proud that we have a School where our students feel empowered to ask the Principal about things that matter and things that they want to know about her. Well done, 5F!

National Volunteers Week

As we mark National Volunteer Week in Australia, it is an important opportunity to recognise the many volunteers who contribute so generously across our School. Volunteers through the OGU, P&F and Ambassadors, sport and co-curricular activities play a vital role in creating connection, belonging and momentum as they welcome new families, support events and fundraising, assist staff and students, serve on committees, and help keep Alumni and community relationships alive. Thank you to all those who work so selflessly to support our School community.

Growing character through service at MLC School

At MLC School, community service is a living expression of who we are as a community and of the Uniting Church values we seek to embody each day. Our girls are encouraged to look beyond themselves, to notice the needs of others, and to respond with courage, compassion and purpose. Through these opportunities, students learn that making a difference does not begin one day in the future; it begins now, in the choices they make, the relationships they build, and the care they show for the world around them. This spirit of service is one of the many things that makes an MLC School education so rich and deeply human.

Our service strategy helps students move from awareness to action, and from action to character formation. We want girls to understand the issues facing individuals and communities, to engage in service that is relational, respectful and sustained, and to reflect on those experiences so that service becomes part of how they see themselves as people of integrity and contributors to the common good. This work is being strengthened through refreshed leadership of our service programs, with Pastor Luisa Bland appointed as Service Learning Coordinator, supported by Director of Experiential Learning Sarah Jauncey. In this way, service at MLC School is a visible and valued part of an education that forms thoughtful, capable young women ready to lead with heart and purpose.

These opportunities take many forms across the life of the School and reflect the generosity, energy and compassion of our students. Girls serve through outreach, advocacy, partnerships with community organisations and student-led initiatives that invite them to bring others with them in a shared sense of purpose. Across the years, service is both practical and relational, helping students grow in understanding as well as action.

Across the Senior School, students can participate in lunchtime clubs and service initiatives that invite them to serve with generosity and purpose. Hands-on projects such as loom-knitting hats for people experiencing homelessness remind students that even simple acts of care can carry extraordinary meaning. Through Days for Girls, students engage with global issues by creating sustainable period products for girls around the world experiencing period poverty, helping them understand that service can be innovative, practical and justice focused.

From Year 6, our girls visit Locke Haven, where they spend time with elderly residents through conversation, shared activities and simple acts of companionship. These visits help students appreciate the importance of presence, attentiveness and intergenerational connection, while also building their confidence in relating warmly and respectfully to others.

In Year 7, students will be invited to participate in a meaningful service-learning experience connected to their Religious Education unit on stewardship of the environment. As part of this learning, students will move beyond classroom theory into lived practice, engaging in service that contributes positively to the environment and the wider community.

In Year 8, students participate in Neighbourhood Aid’s Stronger Together program, where they engage with elderly members of the community through meaningful, relationship‑centred activities. This program provides students with the opportunity to connect across generations, fostering a deeper understanding of compassion, dignity, and belonging.

In Year 9, students serve at the Loaves and Fishes Exodus Restaurant, where they contribute in practical ways while learning more about the experiences of people facing hardship. This opportunity helps students understand the importance of dignity, hospitality and respectful service, and reinforces the value of meeting others with compassion and humility.

In Year 10, we are establishing a partnership with Lucas Gardens, a learning centre that supports students with intellectual and physical disabilities. As part of this collaboration, our students will contribute to the centre’s social program, building relationships, promoting inclusion, and participating in meaningful, reciprocal learning.

Our involvement in the Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp is another particularly special expression of service and a pinnacle of service learning at MLC School. Through this program, Year 11 students help create joyful, inclusive experiences for children with disability while also providing valuable respite for their families. In doing so, they learn about empathy, patience, responsibility and the dignity of every individual.

Together, these experiences shape girls who understand that service is both practical and personal. They learn empathy by listening carefully, humility by serving respectfully, resilience by stepping beyond their comfort zone, and moral courage by choosing to act when action requires effort and persistence. Over time, service helps form young women who are not only capable, but compassionate; not only confident but deeply connected to the communities of which they are a part.

This work is closely aligned with the MLC School 2025–2027 Strategy, which places the MLC School girl at the heart of everything we do and commits the School to cultivating students who are connected, compassionate and courageous. The strategy affirms the importance of nurturing each girl’s spiritual life, underpinned by Christian values and a commitment to service, justice and compassion towards others, while also providing rich co-curricular and service opportunities that foster belonging and connectedness. As a Uniting Church school, MLC School’s approach to service is strengthened through connections with Uniting Church organisations, helping students experience service not only as generosity, but as a lived expression of faith, justice and community. In this way, service brings our mission, values and graduate attributes to life.

In a world that needs wise, generous and principled leadership, community service remains a deeply valued part of an MLC School education. It teaches our girls that character is formed not only in the classroom, but also in how they respond to others with kindness, conviction and care. As students serve, reflect and lead, they come to understand that they can make a genuine difference now. In true Lucis spirit, they learn to walk in the light and to use that light in service of others.

P&F Update

P&F Update

As we approach the half way point of Term 2, I thought it a good time to provide an update on what the P&F have been up to. As always, it’s a lot!

One of the highlights of this term was the 140th anniversary celebrations on 1 May. It was a day of wonderful events organised by the School, that saw many of the P&F executive joining in the celebrations including Felicity Clemens, our Vice President (and Old Girl) representing the P&F in the cake cutting ceremony.

Speaking of the 140th Year anniversary, the Gala Dinner is on Saturday 13 June and promises to be a glittering event! The ticket is all inclusive and you can book until Friday 29 May. It is sure to be a memorable evening so gather your friends and come along.

The latter part of last term saw the amazing Cardboard Challenge happen again in Junior School. This is a massive effort by the Junior School P&F and is always a great success. I had the pleasure of attending this year and saw first hand the fun had by all – especially me! You can read more about it here.

The P&F also provided Easter Morning Tea for the teachers and staff of both Junior School and Senior school. A small but heartfelt gesture of gratitude, that was appreciated and enjoyed by all.

This term, the Junior School has already had the Mother’s Day stall and the Mother’s Day Disco, great community building activities and of course great fun. The Mother’s Day Walk brought together the whole community: students, parents, staff and family members to support breast cancer research.

We had our inaugural Year 7 parent welcome event this year, hosted by the P&F, that saw a very good turn out and was much appreciated by the new parents. This event will be added to the P&F calendar going forward and a big thank you to the Year 7 ambassadors for organising the event.

The Parent Forum, also a P&F hosted event, was held earlier this term and was presented by the incredible Yasmin London. We had excellent attendance and the topic centred around online safety. The information and insights provided by Yasmin were enlightening and useful, and we had an extended Q&A that showed the level of engagement by parents.

The Second Hand Uniform shop continues to do well and provides parents with another option for top ups and back ups, that we all need!

I look forward to updating you again soon on the upcoming events and activities of the P&F and encourage you to get in touch if there is anything we can help you with or if you would like to be part of the P&F in the future.

Even when we feel disconnected or not enough, God’s Spirit is always with us, gently growing love, peace and strength within.

This week in Devotional Service, we reflected on Pentecost and our theme, ‘Spirit Strong – Switched On’. Using the image of a phone without power, students explored how easily we can feel ‘disconnected’….particularly in seasons of pressure, comparison and uncertainty.

Through a story of a student feeling overwhelmed, we reminded girls of a simple but powerful truth: they do not have to navigate these moments alone. God’s Spirit is present not only in big, visible experiences, but also in the quiet, hidden ones….offering comfort, strength and a sense of being deeply known and loved.

Students were introduced again to the fruit of the Spirit — qualities such as love, peace, kindness and gentleness — not as expectations to meet, but as gifts that grow within them over time.

‘Spirit Strong’ is not about having everything together, but about recognising that even in challenging moments, they remain connected, supported and held.

A beautiful Fijian phrase shared in chapel captured this message:
“Na Yalo Tabu sa tiko vata kei keda, ena gauna kecega”
The Holy Spirit is with us, at all times.

I extend my sincere thanks to the following students, who contributed music to our devotional services under the direction and leadership of Richard Coward:

Woodwind Ensemble
  • Freyja Gray (Year 9)
  • Jocelyn Su (Year 11)
  • Angelina Xu (Year 11)
  • Cloris Xu (Year 10)
String Ensemble
  • Juah Hyun (Year 12)
  • Dana Hyun (Year 8)
  • Josephine Doan (Year 11)
  • Tiffany Lai (Year 12)
A Prayer for this week

Loving God,
Thank you for your Spirit, always with us.
When we feel overwhelmed, remind us to pause and breathe,
and to know we are not alone.
Grow in us love when we feel unsure,
peace when life feels busy,
and gentleness when we are hard on ourselves and others.
Help us to be “Spirit Strong,”
in the small, quiet moments of each day.
Your Holy Spirit is with us, always.
Amen.

The most underrated word in learning

There’s something quietly unfashionable about the word consistent. It doesn’t have the energy of ‘excellence’ or the promise of ‘innovation’. And yet, as I find myself in my 30th year as an educator, it is the word I return to again and again when I think about what truly makes a difference for students.

Not talent. Not even motivation, on its own. But consistent application.

Year after year, when I look at the students who have shown the most growth, not necessarily those who started at the top, but those who have moved — they are the ones who return to their learning again and again. They complete the practice, they act on feedback, they try again after a setback.

What is striking is that when I ask teachers what has made a student successful, they rarely talk about brilliance. They talk about habits. And very often, they use the same word: consistent.

  • Consistent in bringing the right materials.
  • Consistent in finishing what they start.
  • Consistent in responding to feedback, even when it’s difficult.
  • Consistent in showing up, mentally as well as physically.

It is not glamorous. In fact, it can look quite ordinary from the outside. But over time, it becomes powerful.

For younger students, consistent application might look like practising reading each night, even when it feels repetitive. For older students, it might be drafting, redrafting, and refining a piece of work rather than settling for a first attempt. Across all ages, it is about developing the discipline to keep going when learning becomes challenging.

There is an understandable temptation, particularly in a world that celebrates quick results, to look for shortcuts. To hope for a burst of effort the night before a task is due, or a sudden surge of motivation before an exam. But learning does not tend to work this way. It is built gradually through steady effort over time.

As a school, this is something we value deeply, not just high achievement, but the habits that make achievement possible. Consistency often doesn’t mean getting it right first time, often it looks like continuing after something hasn’t gone well. A helpful response is to ask when your daughter is disappointed with how something has gone.

“What will you do differently next time?” or “When will you have another go?”

Instead of focusing just on outcomes, ask your daughter questions about habits:

  • What’s your plan for the next 20-30 minutes?
  • What’s the first thing you are starting with today?
  • What are you trying to improve from last time?

Celebrate effort more than outcomes. Ask your daughter what she is proud of sticking with.

Finally, when reports come home, I encourage you to pay more attention to your daughter’s work habits than her marks. Ultimately, these work habits will have the most significant impact on her learning over time.

Year 12 Holiday Study Camp (Monday 29 June – Friday 3 July)

To support Year 12 students in their preparation for the upcoming Trial examinations, we are offering a Holiday Study Camp during the first week of the June/July holidays, from Monday 29 June to Friday 3 July, running 9am – 4pm each day.

This program provides a valuable opportunity for students to consolidate their learning in a structured and supportive environment. Across the week, students will be able to:

  • Participate in targeted revision workshops for selected courses
  • Engage in independent or collaborative study
  • Access support from our excellent Study Hub Plus mentors
  • Complete practice examination papers under supervised conditions

Please note that revision for Trial examinations will also take place during regular class time, and not all courses will run holiday workshops. However, the Study Camp is designed to ensure that all students have access to high-quality support and a productive study environment during this critical period.

We strongly encourage all Year 12 students to take advantage of this opportunity to build confidence, refine their exam techniques, and prepare effectively for the weeks ahead.

Study Hub+

Study Hub+

Term 2 2026 Study Hub+  – Fill in form

Study Hub+ is MLC School’s structured, pay‑per‑use after‑school study support program, designed for students in Year 7 to Year 12 who would benefit from more personalised academic guidance in a focused and supportive environment.

While the Study Hub provides a supervised space for independent study for Year 11 and Year 12, Study Hub+ offers a higher level of individualised, responsive support. Sessions are student‑led, allowing mentors to tailor assistance based on each student’s specific needs on the day. This may include consolidating class learning, clarifying assessment requirements, preparing for examinations, or developing effective and sustainable study routines.

Led by Program Coordinator Ela Huber, Study Hub+ is supported by a team of knowledgeable mentors, all of whom are pre‑service teachers or working towards a career in education. Most mentors are in the final stages of their undergraduate or Master of Teaching degrees and bring with them a strong depth of subject knowledge, alongside up‑to‑date, innovative and curriculum‑aligned resources. This ensures students receive guidance that is relevant and closely aligned with classroom expectations.

A key strength of Study Hub+ is the opportunity for students to work alongside a mentor, particularly when engaging with written tasks. Mentors can read through work with students, ask guiding questions, suggest improvements to structure, clarity and expression, and help students refine their ideas and arguments. While mentors are unable to mark work or provide grades, they can offer valuable feedback and editing support prior to submission, helping students better understand how to improve their work independently.

Mentors can support students with:

  • Revising and consolidating key concepts and class content
  • Examination preparation and revision strategies
  • Planning and organising assessments and study schedules
  • Reading through drafts alongside students and suggesting edits or refinements
  • Developing confidence, independence and effective study habits

Study Hub+ also plays an important role in supporting students in an era where AI is a valuable and encouraged tool at MLC School, but one that requires thoughtful, ethical and informed use. Students can sometimes over‑rely on AI when completing homework and assessments, which may leave them unsure about underlying concepts, task expectations or how to improve their own work.

At Study Hub+, mentors help reinforce the appropriate and ethical use of AI by guiding students to use these tools as a support for learning rather than a replacement for thinking. Mentors work with students to unpack questions, clarify concepts, check understanding and refine ideas, ensuring students remain actively engaged in their learning and confident in the work they submit.

Program Overview

  • Schedule: Monday to Thursday, 3.30pm–6pm (term time)

Homework

This week the Sydney Morning Herald, published an article about homework in primary schools. The article noted that there is ‘no benefit’ to homework in the primary years. Indeed, research does inform us that there is very little academic benefit to homework in primary school. So why does MLC Junior School have homework?

Our approach to homework is intentional and grounded in longitudinal research, and our commitment to the development of the whole girl. Research does indicate that homework has the greatest academic impact in the secondary years, where it supports consolidation, revision and preparation for more complex learning.

At MLC Junior School, girls engage in homework so they may develop sound habits that will serve them well as they progress through their schooling. This includes organisation, responsibility, independence and the ability to complete a task within a given timeframe. Research also suggests that homework can support the development of these positive learning routines and self-regulation skills, which are important foundations for later success.

Importantly, homework at MLC School is always designed to be familiar, purposeful and achievable. It is not intended to be difficult or overly challenging; rather, it reinforces classroom learning and provides an opportunity for girls to revisit concepts in a supportive and manageable way. We want homework to be a positive experience, one that builds confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

We also recognise the valuable role that homework can play in strengthening our home–school partnership. It provides an opportunity for parents and carers to engage with their daughter’s learning. This may be by reading together, discussing ideas, or simply showing interest in what has been learned at school. This shared experience sends a powerful message: learning matters, and what you do at School is important.

At the same time, we are equally mindful of the importance of balance. Our girls are actively involved in a wide range of co-curricular activities. MLC School has one of the very best co-curricular programs in Australia. For this reason, homework is intentionally kept to a manageable length and designed to fit alongside the rich and diverse opportunities offer that part of our holistic MLC School education.

Homework at MLC Junior School is purposeful, age-appropriate and supportive of both learning and wellbeing. It helps each girl to develop the habits and dispositions she will need in later years, while ensuring your daughter continues to take advantage of all that is on offer at our School.

Spotlight on PE in Kindergarten

Spotlight on PE in Kindergarten

Kindergarten students have bounced into Term 2 with energy and excitement, ready to move, learn and have fun!

This term, they’ve been busy exploring a range of object control skills, including throwing, catching, bouncing, and rolling, building both confidence and coordination along the way. There’s been plenty of laughter as students challenge themselves and cheer on their friends. With the Junior School Athletics Carnival just around the corner, our young athletes have also been training their running skills. The girls are working hard to improve their technique and build stamina.

It’s been fantastic to see their determination grow each week as they prepare for their running races with enthusiasm and pride!

Year 7

Year 7

Another super busy week for our Year 7s has gone by! This week we had some fun during Luminary, where the Booralee girls practised some hula hooping moves. Hula hooping will be one of the challenges I will launch during camp, so it is important to practise ahead of time.

On Wednesday, we had a presentation from School Counsellor Gia Aggarwal to introduce the counselling service here at MLC School, and to reinforce the idea of the wide support that we provide here at school if any student needs it. The girls listened to the presentation beautifully and actively engaged when asked questions.

In fact, it is wonderful to see how the girls behave during assemblies, presentations, and year meetings. I am so proud of them for being so quiet, respectful and showing beautiful listening. For this reason, I awarded the entire year group a special ‘star’ directly from space.  Another reason Year 7 should be proud is how punctual they are! I think that it is important to be on time as it shows respect and organisation. Again, Year 7 has been fantastic so far. The prize for ‘most on time’ has gone to Lester this time but I encourage every Luminary group and every girl to continue to be on time for every school event, especially lessons.

On Thursday, we had our second briefing for the upcoming camp led by Adventure and Immersions Coordinator, Jack Rudd, so the girls were able to get a full understanding of how camp works. They could ask questions as well as clarify any doubt. Please remind the girls to send me an email if they have questions so that I can answer to the entire year group as an announcement on CANVAS. I can feel the excitement slowly rising, and this is fantastic. However, please remind the girls that MLC School is a ‘no phone school’ so this will apply at camp too. I trust that every girl will do the right thing.

Finally, we had vaccinations on Friday and the girls were brave, and followed instructions. I hope that their arms are not too sore at the moment.

Almost camp time now. A few more days and we are on!

Year 7 Pyramid-Making Challenge!

Year 7 Pyramid-Making Challenge!

Year 7 historians recently stepped back in time to Ancient Egypt, taking on the role of Egyptian engineers. Using their STEM skills, students worked in teams to construct a stable pyramid in under 10 minutes. Each team had to ensure their structure was strong, stable, and able to remain standing.

The challenge brought historical learning to life, and students had a lot of fun applying their knowledge and teamwork skills in a hands-on, engaging way!

Year 8

Year 8

Year 8 are halfway through Term 2! It’s been a busy week with assessments, and this will continue for another two weeks or so. Please ensure your daughter is across her upcoming assessments and reach out early for teacher support if required. This week we had Year 8 Chapel, and it was lovely to hear our Year 8 volunteers speaks so beautifully, as well as our musicians (Claudia Pruscino, Charlotte Hui and Erin McCrudden) play and sing for us a live version of Shine Jesus Shine.

On Thursday, Year 8 had a session with Director of eLearning, Marianna Carlino about digital organisation with Outlook. The students discussed different ways to organise and categorise their emails to assist with their learning. I encourage you to speak to your child at home and have them show you their organisation strategies. Five minutes at home managing their inbox each night, will set them up for a great next day.

Have a lovely weekend, and please reach out to the Luminary or myself if you have any concerns.

2026 Chinese Bridge Newsletter

2026 Chinese Bridge Newsletter

On 17 May 2026, five students from the MLC School Year 8 Chinese class, Fedra Nikolakopoulos, Vy Truong, Maeve Suwanto, Stella Lee Speyer and Lauren Cheng, attended The 19th Chinese Bridge – Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students. The Chinese Bridge Competition aims to inspire young students to learn Chinese as a second language and to enhance their understanding of Chinese language and culture. It also provides a platform for communication among young people in China and around the world.

Fedra Nikolakopoulos and Vy Truong participated as contestants, while the other three students attended to support them and learn from the experience. Both Fedra and Vy performed very well and were awarded Merit Certificates.

As part of the competition, Fedra and Vy each prepared and presented a speech on the topic “Fly High with Chinese”. Both students spoke with confidence and expression, and it was inspiring to see them share their learning in front of an audience.

After the speeches, the talent show took place. Contestants performed either individually or in pairs. Fedra and Vy worked together during class to create a unique performance that combined tai chi movements with a dance to the popular Chinese song 小苹果, which means “Little Apple”. Their performance showed creativity, teamwork and a strong connection to Chinese culture.

For all of us, the experience was meaningful and memorable. We enjoyed watching students from different schools and backgrounds come together through their shared interest in Chinese language and culture. It helped us understand that learning Chinese is not only about vocabulary and grammar, but also about communication, confidence, creativity and cultural appreciation.

The competition truly reflected the theme ‘Fly High with Chinese’. It encouraged us to see Chinese learning as something that can take us beyond the classroom and connect us with a wider community.

We would like to thank Ms Helena Wang for organising this wonderful opportunity and supporting us throughout the experience.

Year 9

Year 9

And once again, in the blink of an eye, we are already halfway through the term.

This week, Year 9 attended two presentations as a whole cohort. The first was delivered by Anna Michalopoulos, Head of Counselling and Student Health, who spoke with students about stress and strategies for managing it. This was a timely presentation, with Year 9 currently in the midst of assessment tasks. Anna explained that stress is not always negative; in some cases, it can be beneficial and help students achieve their best. However, it is important for students to recognise the difference between helpful and unhelpful stress. She also outlined the signs of stress and discussed appropriate strategies for managing it when it becomes overwhelming. It is important to reinforce that there are many support avenues available at MLC School for students who may be struggling and need assistance. These include their Luminary, myself as Head of Year, Angela Renwick (Head of Students Year 7 – Year 9), the nurses in the Health Centre, and the school counselling team. Please encourage your daughters to speak up and seek support early, rather than allowing stress to become unmanageable.

The second presentation was delivered by Sarah Jauncey, Director of Experiential Learning, and focused on the opportunity for Year 9 students to participate in an international exchange in 2027. The School is currently offering exchanges with two schools in South Africa and one in the United States. Students were provided with information about the experience and the requirements of the program. This is a valuable opportunity for students to immerse themselves in another culture, broaden their perspective, and develop greater independence by stepping outside their comfort zone. The exchange would involve students travelling overseas for six weeks, as well as the student and their family hosting an exchange student here for six weeks. As this represents a significant commitment for families, students were encouraged to discuss the opportunity at home with you if they are interested.

Year 9 reports will be published at the end of this term, and Parent – Teacher interviews are scheduled for early next term. In the meantime, if you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your daughter’s teachers. Please remember that, in most cases, no news is good news.

Have a great weekend.

Year 10

Year 10

In Week 5, Year 10 were introduced to the Subject Selection process for their senior program. Melissa McMahon (Head of Learning and Teaching) gave a comprehensive presentation to the girls about the available options for Years 11 and Year 12 – the HSC or IB pathways. The main messages for Year 10 are to investigate both options thoroughly, ask questions, keep their options open, check prerequisites, seek advice and play to their strengths. The presentation offered lots of ideas to reflect on: What’s my learning style? What engages me? What have been my favourite subjects so far? What am I curious about? The Year 10 Luminary Canvas page has a wonderful careers resource.

Knowing how to support your daughter with these conversations can be challenging. If you need some guidance on important conversations on choosing subjects, check HERE

In Luminary this week, Year 10 will be exploring work experience options for work placement in Term 4. If you have any questions, the Futures and Pathways Team is Andrew Kozyra and Nicole Massara.

Lester House presented Chapel this week and Pastor Luisa got everyone moving on the theme of Music and Faith. Lester did a great job with the readings and presentations – a big thanks to Dijana Mastronardi (Lester House luminary) for guiding the girls in their preparation.

If you have a concern with your daughter’s learning, please contact their subject teacher. For pastoral and wellbeing concerns – please contact your daughter’s luminary and myself on sconnolly1@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au or 02 8741 9736.

Head of Year 10

Year 11

Year 11

Year 11 are now at the halfway point of both the term and their preliminary course, which I think many are finding hard to believe. I know that the coming weeks are particularly busy for Year 11, with multiple academic and co-curricular commitments. This week, we have been discussing practical strategies to support them through this period, including prioritising tasks, breaking work into manageable steps, using available time effectively, maintaining perspective, and reaching out for support when needed. Please don’t hesitate to contact your daughter’s Luminary or me if further support is needed.

This week, our Year 11 SRC representatives, Anika Gupta, Isabel Warusavitarne and Lily Smith. presented to the cohort about this year’s fundraising efforts for Sony Camp. Year 11 plays a key role in leading these initiatives, and it has been encouraging to see the early enthusiasm from students. A big shout out to Isabella Vangestel who is the lead fundraiser so far! The Colour Run at the end of the term is our major upcoming fundraising events and Year 11 oversee the bake sale. All students have been asked to consider how they can contribute, and I encourage you to support your daughters in getting involved. We certainly have some talented bakers in the cohort, and this is a great opportunity for students to contribute to an important cause while building a strong sense of community.

On Thursday 28 May next week, Year 11 along with Year 12 will attend the HSC and Careers Expo at Royal Randwick. The Expo provides students with the opportunity to explore a wide range of post-school pathways, with over 40 exhibitors including universities, TAFEs and employers, as well as access to seminars and expert advice on future study and career options. To make the most of the experience, Year 11 are encouraged to prepare in advance by reviewing the Visitor Guide, identifying exhibitors and sessions of interest, and thinking about the questions they would like to ask. Please encourage your daughter to review the material so she can engage meaningfully with representatives and gain valuable insights into possible next steps beyond school.

Head of Year 11

Year 12

Year 12

On Tuesday this week, Year 12 attended a presentation by Old Girls Tiarna Cominos (2020) and Montana Cominos (2021) as part of the Careers and Futures program.  Tiarna shared her experiences of transitioning out of a midwifery pathway into her career as a Site Engineer. Montana outlined her journey into Medicine from Year 12 to now, via a Bachelor of Psychology, and to her current postgraduate medicine studies.

I do hope as many parents and carers as possible have organised their Year 12 Student Engagement Meetings. In information shared last week, we invite you and your daughter to attend the Student Progress Conversations to follow up on the discussions held in Term 4 2025. As with last year, these meetings are designed to support each student in reflecting on how they are currently engaging with their studies and to develop a clear, focused action plan for the important months ahead. Please note that these meetings will take place at MLC School on Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th May.

This coming week our wonderful Careers Department have organised Year 12s attendance at the Careers Expo held at Randwick Racecourse. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to look at a range of pathways beyond school and to hear from a range of speakers at subject-specific workshops.

I was so impressed by the beautiful voices of Inez Murray and Hannah Shortus as well as the musical talents of Juah Hyun and Tiffany Lai who performed at St Paul’s Lunch Time Concert in Burwood on Tuesday! Well done girls!

Parents were sent a letter this week regarding all Year 12 Events, so you can start planning for the end of Term 3 and onwards. You can view the letter here.

Congratulations to Zoe Pollard who was selected in the U17s NSW State Squad for Water Polo!

Stay Informed About University Open Days!

Stay Informed About University Open Days!

The Careers Department will continue to keep families informed throughout the term with regular updates on upcoming tertiary open days and events.

These updates are designed to help students and parents stay aware of key opportunities to explore university campuses, attend information sessions, and gain valuable insight into courses, entry pathways, and student life.

To support planning ahead, families also have access to the Open Days Guide, developed by Study Work Grow. This comprehensive resource brings together open day dates and details for universities across Australia, making it easier to compare options and map out visits.

Attending open days is strongly encouraged, as it allows students to experience campuses firsthand, speak with academics and current students, and make more informed decisions about their future study options.

We encourage students and parents to begin discussing which institutions and courses may be of interest and to use this guide to plan visits early, as many open days take place during busy periods in the school calendar.

Clean Energy: Why It Matters and What Comes Next – Discover Lecture Series with Macquarie

Organisation: Macquarie University
Location: Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus
Date: Tuesday 23 June 2026

Clean energy systems such as solar, wind, and biomass are often presented as the answer to climate change. While they aim to reduce pollution, they must also deliver reliable and affordable energy for everyday life, powering homes, transport, and industry without disruption. If clean energy is so promising, why haven’t we fully switched to it yet? The answer lies in the practical challenges of performance, safety, and scale that must be solved before new energy technologies can replace the systems we rely on today.

In this talk, Associate Professor Fatemeh Salehi explores how engineering helps address these challenges, turning clean energy ideas into real-world solutions. This talk explains how understanding what affects performance, and identifying safety issues early, can make clean energy systems work at large scale. Through this lens, she provides insight into how research supports the transition from promising concepts to energy solutions that can meet future needs.

This event is part of Macquarie’s Discover Lecture Series, monthly talks suitable for ages 10 and up that offer inspiring insights and a glimpse into the technological advancements shaping our future.

MLC School Music 2026 – Update

MLC School Music 2026 – Update

We have had such a fantastic start to Music this year, and we are full steam ahead for our upcoming 140 Year Celebration concert at the Town Hall.

Below we have addressed some important housekeeping matters relating to Music in 2026.

MUSIC INFORMATION

All information regarding Private Music Tuition and Music Co-curricular Ensembles can be found on the Co-curricular Microsite. Further information regarding the Junior School Curricular Instrumental Program can be found in the MLC School Parent Handbook

JUNIOR SCHOOL PRIVATE MUSIC TUITION (Pre-Kindergarten to Year 5)

Private Music Tuition in the Junior School is at capacityPlease do not place a new enrolment for any 2026 Pre-K through to Year 5 students. If you would like to go on our waitlist, please complete your details and expression of interest on our Junior School Private Music Tuition Waitlist;  We suggest you find an external tutor if you are seeking an immediate start to tuition, or are looking for a tutor who can fix a time outside of school hours.

Tuition is offered on a rotation basis during the school day to avoid missing the same subject repeatedly. Students do not have lessons before recess to avoid clashes with numeracy and literacy lessons. We can only offer a fixed lesson time in exceptional circumstances. Junior School students are expected to start with 30 minute lessons.

SENIOR SCHOOL PRIVATE MUSIC TUITION (Year 6 to Year 12) – New enrolments

For Year 6 to Year 12 students wishing to enrol in Private Music Tuition, please enrol via the Private Music Tuition – Payments Page

NEW ENROLMENTS

Once your daughter is enrolled in private music tuition, students are assumed to continue their private music tuition until the end of Term 3, Year 12. You do not need to re-enrol each term. The term fee will be added to your term fee statement. The tuition rates effective January 2026 are:

  • 30 minute private music tuition $512 per term (8 lessons provided per term)
  • 45 minute private music tuition $736 per term (8 lessons provided per term)
  • 60 minute private music tuition $960 per term (8 lessons provided per term)

Music Tutors will reconcile all lesson attendance for the year at the end of Term 4. Any lessons short of the 8 per term (32 per year) will be credited to your fee statement. Any lessons provided in excess of the 32 lessons per year (excluding extra lessons already paid for) will be added to your fee statement. Any queries relating to music charges should be emailed to music@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au

Our tuition is offered on a rotation basis during the school day. Lessons occur at different times each week, to minimise impact on other classes. Year 11 and Year 12 students may organise a fixed lesson time during their study periods. This is negotiated directly with the tutor.

PRIVATE MUSIC TUTION WITHDRAWALS

Should you wish to withdraw your daughter from private music tuition lessons you will need to provide written notification via the Private Music Tuition Withdraw Form by 10am, Friday Week 7 of the term preceding the term you would like effective withdraw from. Any withdrawals received after this time will take effect from the second subsequent term and the following term fees will be charged accordingly. Lessons provided will be reconciled at the time of withdrawal; any lessons provided in excess or not provided will be reconciled against the subsequent fee statement.  Any queries relating to music charges should be emailed to music@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au

TAIKO ENROLMENTS

There are limited places for enrolment in Taiko. Enrolment is done via the  Taiko 2026 Enrolments Payments page. When signing up, you are committing to the full year of tuition, and subsequent term fees will be charged to your fee statement each term. A new enrolment must be completed for each year when enrolments open in Term 4.

Tri-Service Leadership Summit 2026: Leadership in Action

Tri-Service Leadership Summit 2026: Leadership in Action

Last weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Tri-Service Leadership Summit for 2026 in Canberra. The summit consists of 10 Army Cadets, 10 Navy Cadets, and 10 Air Force Cadets, selected from across Australia to participate in leadership activities and bring their ideas to the table.

Throughout the Summit, I was able to listen to talks on Military Ethics, Operational Leadership and its realised impact on others in the field, tips for moving into a career in the ADF, and an insightful speech by Dr Felix Ho, the 2026 Northern Territory Australian of the Year. These talks included Lieutenant General (Three-Stars) Natasha Fox, the Chief of Personnel, as well as Brigadier Craig Shortt, who is highly decorated and has completed time in the Special Forces Units in the Middle East. Major General Michelle Campbell was also involved in the discussions which followed talks, and I was able to speak to her on a few occasions about her experience in the army and advice.

Something that stuck with me throughout this summit was leading through character. Throughout the activities, such as obstacle courses, discussions, and tours, I was able to see the impact of leading through character. Every dignitary there was not aloof and unapproachable, but rather open and welcome to questions, to help guide and nurture the future leaders I was able to work and grow alongside. This experience has absolutely taught me the value in leading well as well as the impact it has upon those you lead.

– CPL Chiara Hughes (Year 11)

Duke of Edinburgh to Cycle Victoria’s High Country these Summer holidays

Duke of Edinburgh to Cycle Victoria’s High Country these Summer holidays

Following a hugely successful inaugural trip last year, MLC School is once again offering students the chance to ride sections of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail in Victoria’s High Country during the December school holidays — open to both Year 9 and Year 10 undertaking the Silver or Gold Award.

View Padlet here

The six-day cycling adventure runs from Monday 14 December to Sunday 20 December 2026. Students don’t need to be experienced cyclists — provided they can ride a bike, the trip is structured to take them from beginner to confident rider over the course of the week. Last year’s group started the week with mixed experience and finished it as confident cyclists, having ridden one of Australia’s most renowned regional rail trails through Wangaratta, Myrtleford, Bright, Beechworth and Yackandandah. The route is fully sealed, mostly off-road, and winds through bushland, farmland, hidden valleys and historic towns — with plenty of stops for local food along the way. (See a glimpse of last year’s the trip using the padlet below).

View Padlet here

The trip counts towards the Adventurous Journey section of the Duke of Edinburgh Award — 25% of the requirement for Silver and 20% for Gold, with Gold participants also having the option to use it as their Residential Project. It satisfies aspects of both the Practice and Qualifying journeys, making it a genuinely efficient way to progress

Beyond the Award, it’s simply a brilliant week away. Students return with new skills, new friendships across year groups, and the kind of quiet confidence that only comes from doing something you weren’t sure you could.

The details:

  • Dates: Monday 14 December– Sunday 20 December 2026
  • Cost: Approx. $3,750 (includes return transfers to Albury Wodonga, transfers between towns, bike hire, accommodation and meals)
  • Who: Year 9 and Year 10 students currently undertaking or planning to undertake the Silver or Gold Award

  Expression of Interest

Places are limited and last year’s trip filled quickly. To secure consideration, please complete the EOI form as soon as possible.

For more information, contact Duke of Edinburgh Award Leader Glen Mole at gmole@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au
