140 Year Celebrations

Today, our community came together to mark a truly special milestone — 140 years of MLC School. From the very first day in 1886, our purpose has been clear: to provide girls with an education that is courageous, expansive and future‑focused. Today’s celebrations honoured that proud legacy while also recognising the vibrant, dynamic school we are today.

Throughout the day, it was wonderful to see students, staff, Old Girls and special guests sharing moments of reflection, joy and connection. It was a busy day with 140 Year Chapel Service, 140 Year Assembly, the Boarders’ luncheon and tonight we will honour 11 incredible Old Girls at the Back to College Dinner and Alumnae Awards.  The Assembly saw a fashion parade of uniforms over our history, which was absolutely fascinating, and of course the cake cutting was a highlight!

The celebrations now continue into the weekend with reunion gatherings for Old Girls marking significant anniversaries since leaving the School. These reunions are a powerful reminder that being part of MLC School does not end at graduation — it is a lifelong connection shaped by shared experiences, enduring friendships and a common belief in the power of girls’ education.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Gala Dinner on Saturday 13 June, as a truly special evening to mark this important year.

As we celebrate 140 years, we do so with gratitude for all who have shaped our story, and with confidence in the generations of young women who will carry our values forward.

Thank you to all the staff who have supported these events.

ANZAC Day commemoration

On ANZAC Day, along with Rev Vinnie Ravatelli and many MLC School parents and students, I had the great honour of attending the Burwood Community Dawn Service held in Burwood Park. I cannot begin to express how proud I was of our Cadets and Musicians as they participated in the Service; our Cadets showed such great discipline and skill as they carried out the traditions of ANZAC Day commemoration. The Catafalque party’s skill in military drill and ceremony was most impressive, and our musicians lead the singing of hymns and the national anthems of New Zealand and Australia to great acclaim. Later that day, a strong contingent marched on behalf of the Royal Australian Corps of Transport AASC RAE(Tn) TAASC RACT, 12 Transport Coy RAASC, 102 Coral Battery and 104 Field Battery Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery regiments in the Sydney ANZAC Day parade. On Tuesday, both the Cadets and Musicians impressed the student body at our School service.

Congratulations to all involved.

Thank you to the P&F for sponsoring this week’s parent forum by Yasmin London

Yasmin highlighted the rapidly evolving digital trends influencing student behaviours, relationships, and overall wellbeing. She emphasised the importance of understanding current online trends and terminology, as well as the risks students face, including cyberbullying, gaming dynamics, and the increased use of generative AI. Parents and educators are encouraged to respond to these challenges by listening and supporting rather than reacting impulsively, fostering open communication, and seeking support early.

Data presented demonstrated a 417% rise in AI usage among young people since 2024, with many seeking advice from AI due to feelings of isolation or lack of support. The discussion also addressed proposed social media restrictions for under-16’s, noting the challenges posed by unregulated access.

Practical strategies were shared for building digital resilience, such as her ABC framework, controlling Access, setting Boundaries, and maintaining open Communication. Emphasis was placed on the importance of nurturing supportive relationships, encouraging students to gently disrupt negative behaviors, offer private support, and report concerns safely. Barriers such as adult overreaction, victim blaming, and fear of punishment were identified as key areas to address in order to create a safer and more supportive digital environment for students.

At MLC School, we explicitly teach online safety in our luminary sessions, led by our Director of eLearning, Marianna Carlino. Marianna runs regular student and parent sessions, and her resources are available here. Some very helpful external resources are also listed here:

International School Nurse Appreciation Day

International School Nurse Appreciation Day

Wednesday 6 May 2026

While there isn’t a specific ‘School Nurse Appreciation Day’ in Australia, the main day to celebrate nurses, including school nurses, is International Nurses Day, which is on Wednesday 6 May 2026.

We recognise and celebrate the incredible work of our School nurses. Every day, they provide care, compassion, and reassurance to our students and staff – often being the calm and steady presence in moments when it’s needed most.

From managing student health needs and supporting wellbeing, to responding to unexpected situations with professionalism and kindness, their contribution to our School community is invaluable. Their work often happens quietly behind the scenes, yet it makes a significant difference to the safety, comfort, and wellbeing of everyone at our school.

We thank our School nurses for their dedication, expertise, and genuine care. Our community is stronger and healthier because of you.

Thank you, Katelyn Morris, Cathy Roach and Anna Zaher (Pictured above, respectively), for all that you do – wishing you a wonderful Nurses Appreciation Day.

Coming Soon: MLC School Senior Production – Romeo and Juliet

Coming Soon: MLC School Senior Production – Romeo and Juliet

Rehearsals for the Senior School Production Romeo and Juliet, presented in collaboration with Newington College, are well underway. Students from Year 10 to Year 12 have been gathering on Monday afternoons and Sundays, transforming rehearsal spaces into the star-crossed streets of Verona. From the Capulet and Montague rivalries igniting in the public square, to the quiet shadows of the moonlit Capulet orchard where Juliet’s iconic balcony scene unfolds, our students’ performances bring Shakespeare’s timeless characters to life.

Behind the scenes, our Stage Crew, with students from Year 10 to Year 12, play a vital role as the production crew, working across sound, lighting, costume and set movement. Their technical skill and creativity help shape Verona’s world from the grandeur of the Capulet household to the solemn still of the churchyard.

The DDE Department has been extremely impressed by the dedication, collaboration and passion shown by all students involved in this ambitious production. The commitment across both schools is already evident, with rehearsals brimming with energy, focus and a shared love of theatre.

Following the strong demand for tickets last year, additional performances have been added. Romeo and Juliet will be performed in Term 2, Week 7 on the following dates:

  • Tuesday 2 June 2026
  • Wednesday 3 June 2026
  • Thursday 4 June 2026
  • Friday 5 June 2026
  • Saturday 6 June 2026

Tickets will be available in upcoming weeks.

An Important Reminder about Speed and Road Safety

An Important Reminder about Speed and Road Safety

The School’s Value of Respect is particularly relevant for all users of the roads around the School and we ask our community to model and reflect this value at all times.

Please be respectful of all other road users, other drivers, our neighbours, our staff and be mindful to observe all the road rules. There are times when you might be in a hurry, but so too are many others. In particular, be respectful of our students who have the right to safety at all times.

40km/h school zones are in force on all notified school days (including pupil-free days).

Council parking officers and police regularly patrol school zones and stringent penalties apply.

Traffic Safety Reminder – Kent House Staff Car Park and Gordon Street

We kindly ask families to be mindful of parking around the Kent House staff car park. Vehicles that overhang the driveway – particularly during drop-off and pick-up times – can block staff from exiting and create a blind spot for those turning onto Gordon Street. This has been a recurring issue, especially involving provisional drivers and parents who may not be aware of the impact.

Additionally, we’ve observed some drivers performing three-point turns on Gordon Street to avoid congestion when turning onto Rowley Street. This practice poses a significant safety risk, particularly around 3.20pm when pedestrian and vehicle traffic is at its peak.

We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our School environment safe for everyone.

Some requests and reminders please:

  • If using the Junior School carpark, please follow the markings, directions of the staff on duty and park only in those spaces allocated for park and walk.
  • Please do not overtake other vehicles while in the carpark.
  • Adhere to posted speed limits.
  • The carpark is for School use only and is not available for all day parent parking.

Please do not pick up or drop off Junior School students on Park Road, this is dangerous and stopping is illegal in many spots.

On the streets surrounding the School:

  • These roads are heavily used by the general public, so please only drop off students in the marked zones.
  • Adhere to posted speed limits.
  • Do NOT park in or across resident and school driveways.
  • Do NOT double park.
  • Do NOT attempt 3 point or U turns during busy times. In recent weeks there have been numerous examples of such turns which hold up traffic, reduce visibility and put our girls at risk (this is a particular issue in Park Road and Grantham Streets)

Please remember to:

  • Buckle up
  • Slow down to 40km/h
  • Always park legally
  • Observe all signposting
  • Give way to pedestrians
  • Avoid illegal manoeuvres
  • Never queue across children’s crossings

For further information please refer to the flyers on the links below:

Challenging Every Learner: Growing Agile, Independent Thinkers

One of our whole-school goals is to ensure that every student is challenged at her point of need. As I have shared in previous newsletters, challenge is not reserved for the most academically able, it is essential for all learners. It is through challenge that growth occurs.

This week, our staff came together for a professional learning session centred on the work of James Anderson and his concept of Learnership. James Adams, our High Potential Learning Leader, designed an outstanding session for all academic staff from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12. Anderson’s framework invites us to think differently about what it means to be a successful student. Rather than focusing solely on marks or grades, Learnership emphasises the development of students as learners, young people who are agile, reflective, and increasingly independent.

Anderson makes an important distinction between students who are primarily working for a result and those who are working to become more effective learners. While achieving strong results is important, it is not the whole story. A student may perform well on a short-term assessment, yet still find it difficult to navigate complex, unfamiliar challenges over time. Our goal is to develop learners who can adapt, persist, and think deeply as these skills will serve them well beyond the classroom.

This is where challenge plays a crucial role. Students who are focused only on achieving the highest mark can sometimes avoid risk. They may “play it safe,” choosing certainty over stretch. In contrast, agile learners understand that growth requires discomfort. They are willing to take risks, to make mistakes, and to learn from them. They see challenge not as something to avoid, but as something to seek.

During our session, staff engaged deeply with Anderson’s Learnership rubric, reflecting on where our students are in their learning journey, from more directed learners, who rely heavily on teacher guidance, to more independent learners, who take increasing ownership of their learning. Importantly, this was not just an academic conversation. In keeping with our commitment to educating the whole child, our wellbeing and academic leaders worked side by side, sharing insights and strategies. Rich, cross-faculty discussions ensured that this work is cohesive and consistent across the school.

From these conversations, teachers began planning practical strategies to support students in developing greater independence, encouraging them to take initiative and embrace challenge with confidence. For parents, this may sometimes look different from what you might expect. Your daughter may be grappling with more difficult work, encountering setbacks, or being encouraged to persist with something that does not come easily. These moments are not signs of struggle alone. They are signs of growth.

Celebrating teacher excellence at MLC School

Congratulations to our talented Mathematics teacher, Toby Duncan, who will be presenting at Independent Schools NSW Mathematics Conference on Argumentation in Mathematics. Joseph Pfeffer has also had his paper accepted for the ISNSW English Conference: Words, Words, Words. Joseph will present to peers on ‘Explicit teaching of grammar and syntax for developing voice’.

Study Hub+

Term 2 2026 Study Hub+  – Fill in form

Study Hub+ is MLC School’s structured, pay‑per‑use after‑school study support program, designed for students in Year 7 to Year 12 who would benefit from more personalised academic guidance in a focused and supportive environment.

While the Study Hub provides a supervised space for independent study for Year 11 and Year 12, Study Hub+ offers a higher level of individualised, responsive support. Sessions are student‑led, allowing mentors to tailor assistance based on each student’s specific needs on the day. This may include consolidating class learning, clarifying assessment requirements, preparing for examinations, or developing effective and sustainable study routines.

Led by Program Coordinator Ela Huber, Study Hub+ is supported by a team of knowledgeable mentors, all of whom are pre‑service teachers or working towards a career in education. Most mentors are in the final stages of their undergraduate or Master of Teaching degrees and bring with them a strong depth of subject knowledge, alongside up‑to‑date, innovative and curriculum‑aligned resources. This ensures students receive guidance that is relevant and closely aligned with classroom expectations.

A key strength of Study Hub+ is the opportunity for students to work alongside a mentor, particularly when engaging with written tasks. Mentors can read through work with students, ask guiding questions, suggest improvements to structure, clarity and expression, and help students refine their ideas and arguments. While mentors are unable to mark work or provide grades, they can offer valuable feedback and editing support prior to submission, helping students better understand how to improve their work independently.

Mentors can support students with:

  • Revising and consolidating key concepts and class content
  • Examination preparation and revision strategies
  • Planning and organising assessments and study schedules
  • Reading through drafts alongside students and suggesting edits or refinements
  • Developing confidence, independence and effective study habits

Study Hub+ also plays an important role in supporting students in an era where AI is a valuable and encouraged tool at MLC School, but one that requires thoughtful, ethical and informed use. Students can sometimes over‑rely on AI when completing homework and assessments, which may leave them unsure about underlying concepts, task expectations or how to improve their own work.

At Study Hub+, mentors help reinforce the appropriate and ethical use of AI by guiding students to use these tools as a support for learning rather than a replacement for thinking. Mentors work with students to unpack questions, clarify concepts, check understanding and refine ideas, ensuring students remain actively engaged in their learning and confident in the work they submit.

Program Overview

  • Schedule: Monday to Thursday, 3.30pm–6pm (term time)
  • Location: Level 1, Senior Centre
  • Cost: $25 per session (2.5 hours) and charged to your daughter’s account at the end of term
  • Environment: Phone‑free zone to minimise distractions and promote positive study habits
  • Staffing: A minimum of two mentors per session, rotating to provide a range of subject expertise

Families are encouraged to register on a termly basis to support the development of consistent study routines, although weekly bookings remain available via Omnia and Audacia, the School e-newsletter. Students will receive a reminder email at approximately 2pm on their scheduled day confirming their session and assigned room.

Cancellation Policy

If your daughter is unable to attend a scheduled session, please provide at least 24 hours’ notice to avoid being charged. In cases of illness where your daughter is absent from school, families will not be charged.

For further information, please contact Ela Huber, Program Coordinator.

We have been blessed with lovely autumn weather for our ANZAC Day ceremony this week, along with our 140th Anniversary Back to College celebrations held today. Thank you to our Year 5 parents and carers who attended the Year 5 grade assembly this week.

The significance of a female role model

Mothers and mother figures, whether they are mums, grandmothers, aunties, or other caring women in a girl’s life, have a profound influence on primary school-aged girls. From the earliest years, their love and guidance form the foundation of a girl’s confidence and emotional security, helping her feel safe, supported and loved.

As Mother’s Day approaches, it’s the perfect time to acknowledge the many ways these women enrich the lives of our girls. As a school for girls, I am very mindful of the powerful example that mothers and other women provide for our young students. I see this daily: a mum’s encouraging smile at a school assembly; a grandmother’s gentle reassurance at drop-off; or one of our exemplary female staff members offering support when a girl is in need. This steady presence helps our students grow in confidence and develop a strong sense of self, sparking a passion for learning. On Mother’s Day, we thank all the mums, grandmothers, aunties and others who take on a mothering role and are constant champions in our girls’ lives.

Art Competition

Independent Schools NSW is pleased to launch the World Teachers’ Day Student Art Competition 2026, inviting students from all Independent schools to create original artworks celebrating the remarkable work of teachers.

Teachers play a vital role in transforming our future. Through their work with students, they nurture curiosity, instil confidence and ignite a lifelong love of learning. Their dedication helps students uncover their unique strengths and prepares them for life beyond the classroom.

To recognise and celebrate this impact, students are invited to submit an original artwork that showcases the important role teachers play in their lives and communities. For World Teachers’ Day 2026, the competition theme is Transforming tomorrow, today.

Selected artworks will be featured as part of the 2026 World Teachers’ Day appreciation campaign, highlighting student voice and creativity across the Independent sector.

Prizes for the winning submissions have been generously donated by Eckersley’s Art & Craft.

  • Artworks must be original and created solely by the student submitting the entry.
  • Participants may use any artistic medium, including but not limited to painting, drawing, sculpture, digital art, mixed media, and collage
  • Submissions should be accompanied by a brief artist’s statement (maximum 100 words) explaining the inspiration behind the artwork.

Each school can submit a maximum of two entries, so the competition will initially be judged in school, with two finalists selected for submission to Independent Schools NSW.

Please hand entries to Ms Doull in the Junior School Art Studio by Friday 8 May 2026.

From the Author

I believe the best writing comes from lived experience and connects deeply with the reader. Many people at one time or another will have felt excluded. We all long to belong. It is particularly true of young people who are beginning to build relationships outside of family, taking their first steps to becoming social beings.

Stories afford readers a safe space to explore their own feelings, question the world around them and empathise with others. This is why I entered the WestWords Picture Book Manuscript competition in response to the theme of Belong. The story follows an arc from exclusion to inclusion but does so in a child friendly way. I wanted to make the words dance with each other, evoking feelings, sparking curiosity and delight, while Freya’s images link the abstract concepts to familiar, adorable characters with which the reader can build a relationship.

My love of children’s literature spans decades. As a book reviewer, Teacher and Teacher Librarian I have had the privilege and joy of passing that love onto future generations. Having completed a Masters in Writing and Children’s Literature I know what young people are passionate to read and am humbled that I now have brought a story from conception to reality, that will sit in our library bookshelves among the books that I love and have read so many times.

Happy reading!

From the Head Senior School

Another fabulous week in the Senior School this week, with our ANZAC service and our Back to College 140th year celebrations today. Every week I am proud to be at this school, but I was especially proud this week!

It has been great to see the girls in their winter uniforms starting the term. We have been particularly pleased to see the hats worn at lunchtimes and at our whole school gatherings. A reminder as the weather grows colder, I reminded the girls of the following at assembly:

          • Blazers must be worn to and from school. They must not just be worn at the school gate, but all the way home including on public transport and at Westfield
  • If students in Year 7 to Year 9 choose to wear the scarf, they must still be wearing their tie
  • The tunic must be worn with the belt
  • Uniform and jewellery standards apply at co-curricular activities and at Sport

Mother’s Day celebrations

Looking forward to next week, our Mother’s Day celebrations will shortly be upon us. Melissa Boyd, Deputy Principal and I will be participating in the Mother’s Day Classic on Sunday, May 10. It would be wonderful to see as many of the community as possible walking with the MLC School team, it really is a wonderful morning, supporting women’s cancer research. Join our team! I hope to also see as many people as possible at the Mother’s Day breakfast.

Staffing news

We are very excited to announce that we have a new member of the Languages faculty this week as Helene Schmidt welcomed her baby girl! Felicitations to Helene and her family.

Following the break, we were advised that Janet Li would not be returning to her position as a Science teacher, taking a break from the full time classroom due to personal reasons. We wish her all the best. We are in the process of interviewing some excellent applicants to join the Science faculty with immediate effect. In the meantime, we are pleased that highly experienced Science teachers, Tina Harb and Felicity Cassidy-Powell will be taking the classes and our Head of Science, Maryellen Ottaway will be communicating with each class once a permanent allocation is made. I am confident that the classes will be supported to ensure that disruption is minimised.

Anzac Day 2026

Anzac Day 2026

On Saturday, I had the honour of attending the Burwood RSL ANZAC Service and the Sydney CBD ANZAC Day commemorations as part of the MLCSACU. The Burwood Dawn Service was a beautiful morning, the bagpipes, speeches and poetry set the scene for me to reflect on what the day truly means and the Australian Spirit we celebrate. I was proud to see not only the MLC cadet unit in attendance, but also the MLC School choir and band honouring the occasion.

Later in the day, I had the opportunity to attend the CBD commemorative march and helped carry a banner for one of the RSL clubs. It was evident that our participation was appreciated by the club’s senior members, adding a sense of purpose to the day. It was wonderful to see so many people waving Australian flags and commemorating our fallen soldiers and their sacrifices. A big thank you to CAPT(AAC) Maling and LT(AAC) Rudd for organising these events and bringing the MLCSACU to the high standard it is today.

– CPL Meena Kanthathas (Year 11)

Being apart of the ANZAC Service was a meaningful experience that made the significance of the day feel very real. I admired the community of people who came together to pay respects. ANZAC Day, to me, is about remembering sacrifice, courage, and resilience. It also reminds me of the deeper reasons I take part in cadets, to honour and commemorate those who fought in the war. It’s not just about participation, but about carrying forward respect and understanding of their service. ANZAC Day also means taking time to reflect on the sacrifices made by people I will never meet, so I can live in safety and peace today.

– LCPL Matilda Shipard (Year 10)

This year, I had the honour of marching in the 2026 ANZAC Day city march as a cadet—an experience I will never forget. Walking alongside veterans gave me a profound sense of respect and appreciation for those who have served our country. The opportunity to personally thank them was incredibly meaningful.

The parade allowed me to reflect on the sacrifice, courage, and mateship that define the ANZAC spirit. Marching beside veterans made the experience even more powerful, as their presence bridged the past and present. It was a moment filled with pride, reflection, and gratitude, and it deepened my understanding of the true significance of ANZAC Day.

Year 7

Year 7

Week 2 was another busy week for our Year 7 students. The week started with a glorious day, and a beautiful ANZAC Day Service held on the Sports Field. During the ceremony, the names of Old Girls who have died in any war were read aloud alongside those of Old Girls who are currently enlisted. Each student stood up to represent every Old Girl called. It was a truly moving moment for the entire school.

A reminder that every service or event held in the Sports Field, or any other open space in the School, requires students to wear a school hat or school cap. This is a new school rule, and I am so proud of my Year 7 cohort – practically every single Year 7 student had a hat on. This shows how organised the girls are. Well done, Year 7!

This week, we also had our first camp briefing in the Year Meeting on Thursday. This was led by Jack Rudd, our Adventure and Immersions Coordinator. There will be more sessions held, to ensure that every student feels ready to embark on such an exciting journey.

I reminded the girls that a positive attitude is a must when it comes to changing routines or trying new adventures. A positive mindset allows us to be open-minded, accept change, and deal with difficulties to the best of our abilities. And let’s be honest – camp is awesome, and I am sure my lovely Year 7 students will have so much fun.

For now, still working on remembering all names of all my girls… I will get there eventually, I am sure!

Acting Head of Year 7

Year 8

Year 8

For a four day week, Week 2 has definitely been jam packed! The ANZAC Service on Tuesday was full of reflection and respect from all the students. The students listened attentively and it was lovely to see everyone together to commemorate such an important day. Following the ANZAC Service, Year 8 had Xavier Maling, Jack Rudd and a number of Cadets in Year 9 to Year 12 to come and offer insights about joining the Cadet unit and their experiences from their time in Cadets. Year 8 will have an opportunity to come and try Cadet home training in Week 3 before signing up to begin in Term 3 of this year. Further information about this will be sent home to families soon.

This week was also the exciting Back to College Day, celebrating 140 years of MLC School. The girls enjoyed another assembly out on the field along with some celebratory birthday cupcakes!

In other news, Year 8 have been busy in Luminary and Year Group time with a cybersafety session and coming up the students will have a chance to hear from our Counselling team and spend time with their Big Sisters. All of these opportunities are designed to support Year 8 as they continue to learn how to manage relationships, challenge themselves and support their friends. It is hitting that time in Year 8 where relationships can start to change and sometimes become tricky. I am often meeting with groups of students to assist them to work through relational issues, sometimes about school, co-curricular activities or general friendships. This is a large part of my role as a Head of Year, however my support is not always about fixing the situation, but rather providing assistance, an opportunity for reflection and guidance to help Year 8 build their social and emotional skills. If your child needs assistance in this area, please encourage them to reach out to their Luminary as a starting point.

I wish you all a safe and lovely weekend.

Year 9

Year 9

It was lovely to enjoy a three-day weekend last week. I hope everyone made the most of the beautiful autumn sunshine.

On Tuesday we held our annual ANZAC Day Service. Our Cadet Unit looked outstanding in their uniforms and helped set a respectful, reflective tone for the occasion. During the ceremony, the names of Old Girls who have died in any war are read aloud, alongside those of Old Girls who are currently enlisted. A student stands for each name as it is read, and seeing the number represented in this way is a powerful reminder of the impact war has had on our School community over the years. One of this week’s photos captures the students standing during the service.

During Luminary time, Year 9 students were asked to set some goals for the term. Goal setting is essential for students to improve academic performance, increase engagement, and boost self-confidence by providing a clear sense of purpose and direction. Taking time to identify realistic and meaningful goals also helps students focus their efforts, track their progress, and build the habits that support steady improvement in learning and wellbeing.

In our second Luminary session, students discussed belonging – what it means to feel a genuine sense of connection to MLC School, and what it might look and feel like for a student who does not feel that they belong. A strong sense of belonging is essential for student success and is linked to higher academic achievement, increased motivation, improved mental health, and better attendance. These conversations encourage students to notice one another, reach out with kindness, and help ensure that no one feels isolated.

As this newsletter was written before our 140-year celebrations on Friday, I’ll be sure to share highlights in next week’s newsletter.

 – Kate Schurch
Head of Year 9

Year 10

Year 10

A very proud moment for MLC School as the Year 10 Cadets represented us during the ANZAC Service on Tuesday morning. The Year 10 Cadets are a large part of the MLC School Cadet corps and we look forward to their leadership and guidance of the corps in the years to come.

Assessments for Term 2 started this week and we wish the girls success. Pre assessment nerves are a normal part of the process, and such positive stress can be a motivating factor in preparation for tests. As part of their preparation, we encourage the girls to reduce their stress by planning ahead, making time for revision, using a study plan and prioritising good sleep and diet to support their memory. Assessments are an opportunity for growth and for students to see their accomplishments and reward. If you notice your daughter is struggling with pre-test anxiety that is impacting on her normal functioning (sleep, diet, mood), please reach out to your daughter’s class teacher for subject specific coaching. If the issue is more widespread over several subjects, please get in touch with your daughter’s luminary and me for support at school. Early intervention in Year 10 with these issues is essential for positive growth and mental health in Years 11 and Year 12.

Study Hub+, as well as the subject clinics run before school by Mathematics and English, are a great way for your daughter to use her time at school productively, leaving space for family, sports and relaxation after school. Details of Study Hub+ for Year 10 are on Omnia and you can contact Ela Huber (Study Hub+ coordinator) on ehuber@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au for details.

As this newsletter goes to press, Year 10 will have had a wonderful day of celebration for MLC School’s 140th Anniversary celebrations and we are looking forward to sharing the details with you via our socials.

Please continue to note your daughter’s uniform as we get into the winter term: skirt length (on the knee), jewellery and make up (no excessive makeup such as nail polish, false lashes, nail extensions, blush, mascara and lipstick). Thank you for your support in this space. Uniform passes can be obtained from my office prior to the commencement of the school day.

If you have any concerns about your daughter’s learning, please contact her class teacher. If you wish to discuss your daughter’s wellbeing or she needs some support at school, please get in touch with your daughter’s luminary and myself on 02 8741 9736 or sconnolly1@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au I am available for meetings, phone discussions or Teams meetings Monday to Friday.

Year 11

Year 11

This week has been a particularly special one for our Year 11 students. A large number of students took part in the Sony Foundation Camp interviews, and the feedback from staff involved has been overwhelmingly positive. It was a privilege to hear students speak so thoughtfully about their reasons for wanting to volunteer, their genuine excitement about the opportunity, and their willingness to be involved. The experience was truly heartwarming and a wonderful reflection of the compassion and generosity within this cohort.

During Luminary time this week, students continued their exploration of future career pathways. After listening to three MLC School Old Girls share their career journeys, Year 11 students have been reflecting on their own interests and aspirations. These conversations have prompted thoughtful discussion and encouraged students to consider a range of possible pathways beyond school.

Over the course of this term, students will continue to hear from Old Girls working across a variety of fields and engage in structured activities designed to support informed decision‑making about future directions. This learning will culminate later in the term with an excursion to the Careers Expo, providing students with further opportunities to explore options and ask questions as they begin to shape their plans for the years ahead.

Year 12

Year 12

A short week but a full week!

Tuesday morning saw the School hold our annual ANZAC Day Service. As always, the service was ably led by our Year 12 Cadets and students; who shared their reflections on the importance of the day, sung both hymns and anthems, performed in the band and honoured Old Girls who have served. Thank you to the Year 12 Cadet leaders who have again shown their commitment, strength and shared all that they have learned in their time in the program.

Following the service, Year 12 were joined by Year 11 for a Careers presentation by three Old Girls. Cassandra Diamantis (2015) shared her experiences founding the Dream Big Marketing Sydney-based social media agency. Ava Dean (2024) and Angelina Le (2025), who were both recipients of the UTS Bachelor of Accounting Co-Op Scholarship, shared their insights into the program.

Next week I’ll share reflections on Year 12’s contribution to and support of Friday’s Back to College Day where MLC School opened the doors and showcased all that we’ve built over 140 years.

Congratulations to Anisha Sivagurunathan who was selected for the U19s IGSA Netball Team to compete at NSW CIS Championships next week.

Well done to Abby Coxsedge and Layla Alameddine who attended the Sydney University Ngara Years 9-12 future focus day, experiencing campus and exploring academic skills and futures pathways.

Congratulations also go out to Kimberly Chou, Elena Sun and Serena Farley who were on Thursday awarded their Gold Duke of Edinburgh at Government House (pictured here with Mr. Glen Mole, Duke of Edinburgh Award Leader). This is a significant achievement, following their focus for many months on skills, fitness, and community spirit.

A Conservation Biologist’s Dream of Improving Endangered Species Survival – Discover Lecture Series with Macquarie

Organisation: Macquarie University
Location: Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus
Date: Thursday 21 May 2026

In the late 20th century, scientists around the world became alarmed by the sudden collapse of frog populations. Decades later the cause was identified as chytrid, a fungal pathogen. No invasive species has caused comparable destruction: chytrid has affected hundreds of species worldwide and driven at least 90 to extinction, surpassing the impacts of cats, rats, and cane toads.

Dr Anthony Waddle’s research focuses on increasing frog resistance to chytrid through vaccination strategies, artificial “frog sauna” shelters that allow frogs to clear infections, and molecular approaches to engineer genetic resistance in endangered species. Crucially, his team not only develops these tools but deploys them in real time to protect declining wild populations. Most conservation biologists only dream of seeing their work make a difference in wild populations and this team is doing just that.

This event is part of Macquarie’s Discover Lecture Series, monthly talks suitable for ages 10 and up that offer inspiring insights and a glimpse into the technological advancements shaping our future.

Clean Energy: Why It Matters and What Comes Next – Discover Lecture Series with Macquarie

Organisation: Macquarie University
Location: Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus
Date: Tuesday 23 July 2026

Clean energy systems such as solar, wind, and biomass are often presented as the answer to climate change. While they aim to reduce pollution, they must also deliver reliable and affordable energy for everyday life, powering homes, transport, and industry without disruption. If clean energy is so promising, why haven’t we fully switched to it yet? The answer lies in the practical challenges of performance, safety, and scale that must be solved before new energy technologies can replace the systems we rely on today.

In this talk, Associate Professor Fatemeh Salehi explores how engineering helps address these challenges, turning clean energy ideas into real-world solutions. This talk explains how understanding what affects performance, and identifying safety issues early, can make clean energy systems work at large scale. Through this lens, she provides insight into how research supports the transition from promising concepts to energy solutions that can meet future needs.

This event is part of Macquarie’s Discover Lecture Series, monthly talks suitable for ages 10 and up that offer inspiring insights and a glimpse into the technological advancements shaping our future.

Deputy Chief of Army Adventure Training Award

Deputy Chief of Army Adventure Training Award

During the holidays, I completed the Deputy Chief of Army Adventure Training Award (DCA ATA) in Tasmania alongside other cadets from all over Australia. The DCA ATA was one of the most challenging yet memorable experience. Although the weather was unforgiving with single digits throughout the whole 72 hours, it pushed us physically and mentally, giving that extra 10% or that extra 20% of effort. Although the DCA ATA is an individual achievement, all cadets that participated would agree that teamwork was the key skill that made us all individually stronger and pushed ourselves to be the best.

The first challenge was kayaking up Lake Barrington multiple times with six challenges and three bonus challenges all completed in nine hours. Each station was different whether it was setting up a tent blindfolded and constantly running into poles or fences, capsizing on purpose, or kayaking blindfolded. It showcased how with each activity completed, the mental and physical toll it took really showed. One thing that helped was just singing a bunch of songs whilst kayaking keeping the morale up and just trying to block out the thoughts of us being cold and stressed. One lesson that kayaking taught me was to just be patient and that there will always be challenges where you just don’t want to do it but aiming to push that extra 20-30% would pay off in the end and it’s a rewarding feeling. After the kayak, we walked from Billiards Creek up to the road where we would later ‘miss the bus’. Watching the bus drive off was gut wrenching but building that morale back up was much needed and just walking up the road until we got picked up by the bus. That night was a rough night with picketing happening every hour with a constant wake up every hour. It was quite hard to find the strength to not sleep through picketing especially at 3am.

The second challenge was canyoning and rafting. We abseiled down six rock faces and walked over to rafting. Abseiling was quite the challenge with free hanging rocks and loose rocks being the ultimate enemy. Rafting was the best time for a little bit of team bonding. With the NATCUO (Peta Gibsson) on our raft, we learnt many things about the role of being a NATCUO and the activities she needed to attend and the amount of work that goes into it. Capsizing the raft was also a challenge flipping the raft over twice and trying to get everyone back on. We eventually found a way to get everyone back on and paddle back to the watchtower. Rafting and Abseiling were one of the favourable activities with a break in between abseiling and rafting with a nice warm fire and music. ACS boosted our morale whilst we waited for the other group for rafting. The Nutbush was playing in the background as well as YMCA and the Macarena.

Finally the last day, climbing up Mount Roland and over to Mount Van Dyke. This activity was the most intense day out of the 72 hour challenge. Out of all the years of ATA being held out in Tasmania, it was the first time that it snowed up on Mount Roland. Putting in the effort to trek up Mount Roland was tough, but the view was completely worth it even if it was just a blur of land covered up by clouds. The snow was amazing and to see people witness snow for the very first time was heartwarming. Although the snow was lovely to see, it wasn’t necessarily in favour of us climbing up rocks. Slipping in mud and into bushes wasn’t planned but it made the hike a lot more enjoyable and memorable. It was a rewarding experience especially doing it with the friends you made over the three days and just constantly pushing that extra 10% or 20% knowing that the end result wasn’t to what extent you completed every task but how much you pushed yourself.

Overall ATA was the best experience I could ask for, creating many friendships not just from the NSW 2nd Brigade but from all states and territories. A big thank you to CAPT (AAC) Maling and LT (AAC) Rudd for providing this wonderful opportunity and I can’t wait to see cadets from the following years to attempt ATA and share their experiences.

Over the recent holidays, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Deputy Chief of Army Adventure Training Award (DCA ATA) trip in Tasmania, an experience that proved both highly rewarding and personally challenging. Throughout the course, I was pushed outside of my comfort zone – from summiting Mount Roland to kayaking up and down Lake Barrington – developing resilience, teamwork skills, and confidence in unfamiliar environments.

One of the most valuable aspects of the trip was the chance to work alongside cadets from units across Australia, which gave me a broader understanding of how different units operate and train. It was fascinating to share experiences and learn from others, while also forming strong friendships that made the experience even more memorable. Overall, the trip was an unforgettable highlight, combining challenge, growth, and connection in a way that I will carry forward in my cadet journey.
