Eleni started at MLC School in Kindergarten and is excited to have the opportunity to support the students in the Junior School as they explore art in its many forms. Looking forward to seeing many of our mums and girls at next Monday’s (12 May 2025) Mother’s Day Breakfast commencing at 7.15am on the main campus. Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums, grandmothers and significant other women.

The Power of Compassion in Our School Community

Compassion is more than just a word; it is a way of life that can transform our school community into a nurturing and supportive environment. At MLC School, we believe that compassion is a fundamental value that should be cultivated in every student, teacher, and staff member. It is through acts of kindness and empathy that we can build stronger connections and foster a sense of belonging for everyone.

Compassion involves recognising the feelings of others and taking action to support them. It is about putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes and understanding their feelings and experiences. By practicing compassion, we create a positive atmosphere where everyone feels valued and respected. This, in turn, enhances the overall well-being and happiness of our school community.

There are many ways we can demonstrate compassion in our daily lives at school. Simple gestures like offering a helping hand, listening to a friend in need, or sharing encouraging words can make a significant difference.

Here are some examples of how we put compassion into action:

  • Community Service: Participating in community service projects that benefit those in need. Both Booralee and Prescott will hold fundraising events this term in service of others.
  • Inclusive Actions: Being actively inclusive ensure everyone feels welcome and included, regardless of their background or abilities. One thing we teach through our URStrong program is sitting in a horseshoe shape, which is open ended, allowing others to easily join.

To cultivate a culture of compassion, it is essential to teach and model compassionate behaviour and create opportunities for students to practice empathy. Additionally, incorporating lessons on empathy and kindness into the curriculum can help students develop these crucial skills. That is a focus in Term 2 where we focus on and learn about our School Value of Compassion.

Celebrating Compassion

At the end of the term we will have a celebration assembly where special awards are given out to students who staff noticed demonstrating compassion.

Conclusion

Compassion is a powerful force that can transform our school community into a place where everyone feels supported and valued. By embracing empathy and understanding, we can create an environment where students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Let us all strive to practice compassion in our daily lives and make our school a beacon of kindness and respect. Together, we can make a positive impact and build a brighter future for everyone.

Year 5 Round Square Show and Tell session

Year 5 Round Square Show and Tell session

Year 5 leaders Olivia Wang, Mackenzie Kelly, Avni Narang, Sadie Wilson and Lana Hutchison attended the Round Square Show and Tell international meeting representing MLC School and the Service and Technology leadership portfolios. It was exciting seeing people from Thailand, India, and Australia. Our theme topic was ‘Your favourite adventure.’ One of the schools we found most interesting was a school in Canberra that had a lot larger playground than us because it was positioned at the bottom of a hill. We also noticed that all the classrooms had different ways of organising things. We also had a part where we asked questions to other schools and other schools could also ask questions to us as well. We appreciate our Year 5 teachers Ms Concannon and Mr Naylor and also Ms Sharpe and Mr Sandral for giving us this experience to have this meeting.

Goodbye and Good Luck!

Yesterday we bid farewell to Liane Simpson who has been a part of MLC School as a staff member and parent for the last 17 years. She has had an incredible impact right across the school, most notably in the Drama and Visual Arts Departments in the Senior and Junior Schools, making sure our student’s learning is showcased in a professional manner that does justice to their achievements. Thank you so much for your commitment to our staff and students Liane!

ANZAC Service

Our ANZAC service this year was a poignant and meaningful event, reminding us all of the sacrifices made by so many for our freedom. It was a deeply moving occasion that brought together our community in a spirit of remembrance and gratitude.

Our students did a wonderful job marking the occasion. I was particularly proud of Ella Baker (Year 12) and her leadership of the Cadets and Marirose Giann (Year 12) for her words of welcome. Zoe Likely (Year 12) delivered a meaningful historical reflection and Michaela Kwaan played the last post and the Rouse beautifully. I also extend my thanks to Inez Murray (Year 11) , Uma Singleton (Year 12) and Sharon Laurens (Year 12) for leading the assembly as soloists for the hymns and anthems.

Opera House Concert

I have been so excited listening to our rehearsals for the Opera House concert. Trevor Mee (Director of Music) and his music team have been working so hard to prepare the students and musicians for the night. Earlier this week, you will have received a very detailed letter regarding the logistics for the evening. You can read it again here. Due to the unusual nature of the day, those students that are onsite in the morning will be in classes, however we will be adjusting the timetable and lesson structures in order to accommodate the fact that we will have staff supervising a large number of musicians at the Opera House and to ensure that those students do not miss content delivery.

Please log in to Omnia for access important information pertinent to your daughter and to submit permission.

Please note that all students are expected to wear their blazer to and from school until they arrive at home. Year 10 to Year 12 need to wear sheer black stockings and not the regulation black tights. Students have now adjusted to wearing the winter uniform and should expect to receive Accountability Points if they are not wearing their blazers.

Year 7

Year 7

Thank you to all the families who tuned in to the Year 7 to Year 9 Parent Webinar on Online Safety with the Director of eLearning, Marianna Carlino. We hope that it was informative and useful for opening conversations with your family about safe online practices, learning and boundaries. During our Year Meeting this week, Year 7 also viewed a presentation on online safety and have been asked to sign the Cyber Safety Pledge on page 11 of the Student Diary. Students have also been asked to sign the Technology guidelines on page 156. Over the weekend your child should be asking you to view this as both of these sections of the diary require a parent signature. We request your support in ensuring your child abides by the rules set out in these parts of the diary, for a successful journey through high school.

This week also saw a really special ANZAC service, followed by a Luminary Peer Support session with Year 10.  In the Peer Support sessions Year 10 build their leadership skills and help Year 7 build vertical support systems through fun games and activities. Year 7 will have two more Peer Support sessions with Year 10 throughout the term.

The countdown is now on until camp – three weeks of school to go! There are around 15 outstanding permissions so please log onto Omnia and approve this as soon as possible.

Have a wonderful weekend, especially to all the mother’s and mother figures in our lives. Please reach out to your daughters Luminary or teachers if you have any questions.

Year 8

Year 8

This week students in the Senior School honoured ANZAC Day with the MLC School ANZAC service. As always, it was impactful to see students from our school stand in honour of Old Girls who have served during times of conflict. Students from Year 8 were represented in the school band and I want to congratulate them on them on another exceptional musical accompaniment.

We hope the Online Safety Webinar with Marianna Carlino (Director of eLearning) helped you understand our school’s technology use. Marianna highlighted parents’ roles in guiding their daughters through the digital world. If you missed it, watch the recording here. Over the weekend, Year 8 students may ask you to review the Cyber Safety Pledge and Technology Use agreements with them.

During Luminary time on Tuesday, students were provided an academic preparation period to assist them in working towards the completion of upcoming assessment tasks. Their Luminaries shared with me that their focus and preparedness to support each other with quizzes, questions and proof reading was wonderful to see. Well done Year 8 on supporting each other during a busy academic session! As a reminder for all parents and students, there are a range of resources available through the Academic Care Canvas page (linked through Year 8 Luminary page) as well as the Study Skills website (accessed as per below) to assist students with their organisation and time management.

Year 9

Year 9

It has been wonderful to see how Year 9 have engaged with their learning and reconnected with their peers over the first two weeks of term.

This week during Luminary time, Year 9 set a ‘growth mindset goal‘ for the term. A growth mindset goal is about continuous learning and development, rather than just achieving a specific outcome. For example, instead of aiming to get a certain result, a growth mindset goal would be to improve problem-solving skills by practicing regularly. During this activity, Year 9 were encouraged to identify what steps they would take this term to achieve this goal, and who they can ask for help and support

Year 9 students also attended the MLC School ANZAC Service on the Sports Fields on Tuesday. Thank you to all the cadets and musicians who took part in the service; all Year 9 demonstrated leadership and respect during this important occasion.

Finally, a reminder about some important dates for the diary:

  • Monday 19 May 2025 – The Opera House Concert
  • Thursday 22 May 2025 – Year 9 Sydney Science Park Fieldwork Excursion
  • Thursday 29 May 2025 – Parent Information Evening Empower Ed – Navigating Respectful Relationships

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me or your daughter’s Luminary teacher if you have any queries, concerns or simply wish to touch base about her academic, social and emotional wellbeing.

Year 10

Year 10

It’s been a busy and meaningful Week 2 for Year 10. On Tuesday our Cadet Students helped lead a moving ANZAC service. They did a brilliant job, demonstrating their commitment and hard work while paying their respects to our past and present military service members.

Also on Tuesday, our Year 10 Peer Support Leaders ran the Year 7 Luminary session. These sessions are a wonderful opportunity for Year 10 to connect with and mentor the younger girls. While they may not always realise it, their presence and guidance play a significant role in fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for our Year 7 students. It’s been encouraging to receive feedback from teachers, especially highlighting how much smoother and more confident the Peer Support Leaders were this week—clear signs of their ongoing growth as leaders.

Meanwhile, the Year 10 students who are not currently Peer Support Leaders engaged with this term’s Luminary theme of Compassion. At MLC School, we are committed to providing a holistic education, and Luminary sessions are a pivotal part of our pastoral care program. This week, students created their own “Compassion Bingo Cards” filled with acts of kindness they’d like to see more of within their year group. Their ideas were thoughtful and inspiring, ranging from sharing study notes to supporting one another’s learning, to showing appreciation for their teachers, listening to one another, and volunteering their time.

I look forward to seeing these acts of kindness come to life in the coming weeks, helping to further build a school culture rooted in empathy, support, and community spirit.

Year 11

Year 11

This week has been another eventful one for our Year 11 students at MLC School.

We commenced the week with an informative presentation by Deputy Principal Melissa Boyd and Director of Experiential Learning Sarah Jauncey regarding the annual MLC School Sony Camp. Year 11 students will have the opportunity to lead this camp in 2025, taking on various roles such as camper companion, camper relief companion, camp organization staff, media team, and scrapbook team. This is a valuable experience that students will undoubtedly cherish. Additionally, Year 11 will be organising the bake sale at the MLC School annual colour run, scheduled for later this year. There are numerous ways for students to contribute to the success of the Sony Camp.

This week also featured our Anzac service. The cadets performed admirably, and special congratulations are extended to the Catafalque party, comprised entirely of Year 11 students: Olivia Ebel, Rebecca Beaton, Evelyn Kerr, Elena Tulloch, Eliza Kershaw Macdonald, Georgia O’Connor, Yuuki Onuma, and Sophie Winnall. Congratulations are also due to Inez Murray (Year 11) for being selected to perform the hymn ‘Abide With Me’.

During Luminary time, students were encouraged to reflect on their goals for the term. This included not only academic objectives but also social and personal aspirations. Discussions focused on strategies for achieving these goals and the necessary steps to be taken.

Year 11 Legal Studies 2: 100% Test

Year 11 Legal Studies 2: 100% Test

With the students returning from the Easter school holidays and everyone feeling refreshed and energised, it was a good time to check in with everyone’s study notes as we get close to the halfway mark of Year 11. The students had been given notice that the Easter school holidays was a good time for them to review and consolidate their study notes to ensure they stay on-track with the content heavy course.

Rather than simply having the students display their notes to me for reviewing I setup a 100% test. The 100% test involves the students answering 15 questions using their notes that cover a range of content from the syllabus dot points however the whole class needs to find the correct answer. They are able to compare their notes and discuss the questions, they are not able to use the internet or the teacher, even the running of the test was capably led by Seraphine she said, “I have a new appreciation for how challenging it can be to keep everyone focused on task.”

This task assists students with collaborating to share their knowledge and understanding. Collaboration and leveraging social networks is beneficial for students to reduce the stress of engaging with a range of complex topics. The students were able to successfully complete all of the questions correctly as a class reinforcing each others knowledge and at times deepening understanding. Amelia reflected, “sometimes I can figure out the answer in multiple choice questions by eliminating the incorrect one but being able to ask others why the correct answer is correct has helped my understanding of this point.”

Year 11 Excursion to PhysXrehab

Year 11 Excursion to PhysXrehab

As part of their depth study in Health and Movement Science, Year 11 students attended an excursion to PhysXrehab. Under the guidance of sports scientists and physiotherapists, they explored optimal biomechanics and safe sporting techniques. Students analysed their running technique using Vuemotion AI technology and dynamometry and assessed throwing and jumping techniques with HumanTrak and force plates.

This hands-on experience gave students a deeper understanding of the technology used to enhance sports performance and support injury prevention in elite teams. It also allowed them to develop valuable skills and knowledge relevant to their future studies and personal athletic performance.

Year 12

Year 12

Booralee House hosted our chapel service this week, led by the Rev. Vinnie Rivetali. House Captains Gabi Wilkie (Year 12) and Sophia Malas (Year 12) worked with luminary Sarah Papachristoforou to organise and present the readings. I wanted to share with you part of the service – the affirmation of faith, which discussed the themes of courage and generosity.

“We believe in courage…

courage to believe,

courage to stand up for the people we love,

courage to love without hesitation.

We believe in giving what we have.

We believe that actions of generosity change us.

We believe that these small acts can change the world.”

The Tuckwell Scholarship is a highly prestigious scholarship from the ANU and we are very fortunate to have three Year 12 students who have proceeded to the second round: Lana Goodall (Year 12), Tasha Wong (Year 12) and Sarina Nagra (Year 12). The process is very involved, and we wish them the absolute best for their applications.

Next week (starting Monday 12 May) in luminary – Year 8 will be preparing Big Sister Little Sister activities for their big sisters.

If you have concerns about your daughter’s progress, please contact the subject teacher. If you are seeking support for disability provisions or learning support, please contact myself or our Learning Enrichment faculty.

For wellbeing and pastoral issues, please reach out to me or your daughter’s luminary. I am available Monday to Friday on 02 8741 9736 and sconnolly1@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au

From the Principal

In recent weeks we have held several significant community events that have reminded us all of the rich history and strong community of which we are a part. This week at both the Alumnae Awards dinner and the school reunions I was struck by the number of times that our Old Girls referred to the fact that through their schooling at MLC School, they grew up knowing that they could do anything that they set their minds to. They were free from the stereotypes and limitations in society that they first encountered at university or work. As one Old Girl said, “by the time someone tried to tell me I couldn’t, I already knew that I could”. The importance of that sense of self cannot be underestimated and is at the core of our call for every girl to ‘Dare to be More’.

Congratulations to the 2025 Alumnae Award Winners

On Friday 2 May, members of the MLC School community gathered to recognise the achievements of some of our most outstanding Old Girls.

The MLC School Alumnae Awards started in 2020 and aim to celebrate Old Girls who are prepared to think differently; have courage and conviction; and lead with passion.

There are MLC School Alumnae Awards and Young Alumnae Awards (for those under the age of 40 years) for those shown to have made a significant impact in their field of endeavour in one or more of the award categories:

We congratulate the following 2025 award recipients:

  • Cynthia Gunn (1960) – Alumnae Award for Contribution to MLC School
  • Carol Edds (Hamilton, 1968) – Alumnae Award for Professional Achievement and Academia
  • Jane Noake (1974) – Alumnae Award for Sporting Achievement and Philanthropic Endeavours
  • Anne Gripper (1982) – Alumnae Award for Sporting Achievement and Philanthropic Endeavours
  • Ani Satchcroft (Satchithananda, 1998) – Alumnae Award for Professional Achievement
  • Tara Sarathy (2001) – Alumnae Award for Social Welfare and Impact
  • Amanda Shalala (2003) – Young Alumnae Award for Professional Achievement
  • Alice Chance (2011) – Young Alumnae Award for Cultural Contribution
  • Cynthia Farah (2012) – Young Alumnae Award for Professional Achievement

I encourage you to read the full details about each of our award winners on the School’s website.

2025 Old Girls Reunions

On Saturday 10 May, the School was abuzz as we hosted 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 year reunions for our Old Girls. It was a marvellous opportunity for them to reconnect and share stories of their time at school while also learning about how each other’s lives had unfolded. Keep an eye out on our social media pages for further photos from the day.

ANZAC Day Commemoration

On Tuesday 6 May we commemorated ANZAC Day with a moving service that showcased the MLC School cadets and their leaders and reminded our community of the sacrifices and contribution made by MLC School students and their families during times of conflict.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day, I want to take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate the incredible mothers and mother figures in our community. Your unwavering dedication, love, and support play a vital role in shaping the lives of our students and fostering a nurturing environment for their growth and success.

Thank you for all that you do, and I hope you have a wonderful and joyous Mother’s Day filled with love and happiness.

My curious spirit
Mia Li (Year 6)

“When I was little, I had a favourite stuffed toy. I would often hug it and bite it. This portrait blends my memory of biting the toy’s ear with things from my imagination. Half of my face transforms into my favourite animal – a cat. Cats are curious and adventurous, always wanting to explore and discover. This represents my way of seeing the world – mixing real experience with fantasy.”

International Nurse Appreciation Day: 12 May 2025

International Nurse Appreciation Day: 12 May 2025

While there isn’t a specific ‘School Nurse Appreciation Day’ in Australia, the main day to celebrate nurses, including school nurses, is International Nurses Day, which is on Monday May 12 2025.

This day commemorates the birth of Florence Nightingale and recognizes the vital role nurses play in healthcare.

The 2025 theme is “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies”.

At MLC School, we have three nurses that run the health centre. They are dedicated and passionate, and we thank them for taking care of our girls.

The Health Centre is a safe place for our girls to attend for both physical and mental health concerns.

They are well looked after and supported. Our girls and MLC School are lucky to have such wonderful and dedicated nurses.

Thank you, Katelyn, Cathy and Anna, for all that you do – wishing you a wonderful Nurses Appreciation Day.

The Power of Attention: Helping MLC School Girls Thrive in a Distracted World

Has your daughter’s teacher mentioned she needs to improve her attentiveness in class? You’re not alone. Many parents and educators are noticing how difficult it has become for young people to focus in today’s fast-paced, hyper-connected world.

Learning begins with attention. As cognitive scientist Stanislas Dehaene reminds us, we cannot learn what we do not attend to. Attention is the gateway to memory, understanding, and creativity. Without it, even the most engaging lesson becomes background noise.

Yet attention is under siege. In Stolen Focus, journalist Johann Hari explores how technology, stress, and environmental overload are undermining our capacity to focus—especially for young people. Daniel Goleman, in Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence, argues that managing one’s attention is now as important as traditional academic skills for long-term success and wellbeing.

It’s also important to acknowledge that attention challenges can be more than just situational. For neurodiverse girls, particularly those with ADHD, the struggle to maintain attention may be rooted in neurological differences—not a lack of effort or motivation. These students often work twice as hard to stay on task, and their needs are best supported with empathy, structure, and tailored strategies rather than pressure to conform to “normal” attention spans.

Supporting Attention at Home: Strategies for All Learners

Here are some ways parents can help nurture and support their daughter’s attention—whether she’s simply feeling scattered or managing ongoing attention difficulties:

Reduce Cognitive Overload

Create a calm, uncluttered space where your daughter can work. Reduce background noise, limit open tabs or apps, and break large tasks into smaller, manageable chunks.

Encourage Single-Tasking

Multitasking feels productive but weakens attention and learning. Encourage her to do one thing at a time: reading without checking messages, or writing without music with lyrics. Use timers to structure focus periods (e.g., 25 minutes on, five minutes off).

Teach Her About Attention

Explain that attention is a skill that can be built, not something you either have or don’t. Share with her what scientists like Dehaene have found—that attention shapes how our brains process and store information. Knowing this can empower her to take control of her learning.

Use Movement and Mindfulness

Encourage your daughter to take regular breaks, go outside, or use gentle movement between tasks. Mindfulness practices—like deep breathing or a few moments of quiet—can help her “reset” and become more present.

Co-Create Focus Routines

Involve her in designing a system that works. What time of day is she most focused? What helps her get started? A shared plan builds agency and signals that attention isn’t about discipline—it’s about finding what works for her brain.

For ADHD and Neurodiverse Learners: Personalised Strategies

If your daughter has ADHD or another diagnosis, consider tools such as visual schedules, movement breaks, noise-canceling headphones, or assistive technologies. Positive reinforcement, short goal cycles, and collaborative problem-solving often work better than punitive approaches.

Establish a Nightly Sustained Reading Routine

Encourage a nightly reading routine to help your daughter wind down and focus. Sustained reading not only improves attention but also enhances comprehension and critical thinking skills. Choose books that interest her and set aside a specific time each evening for reading. This routine can become a calming and enjoyable part of her day, fostering a lifelong love of learning.

As Stanislas Dehaene reminds us, the brain is built for learning—but it must be engaged with intention and focus. At MLC School, we are committed to nurturing these essential skills, ensuring our girls are equipped to thrive in both their academic pursuits and their personal lives.

Farewell and thank you

Farewell and thank you

Lisa Filby – Director of Sport

To the families and students of MLC School,

As many of you know, my time here at MLC School has come to an end. While leaving is never easy, it is also exciting for the opportunities that lie ahead. This school and community has been my happy place for nine years. And while I’m excited about the future, I’m also deeply grateful for the past.

When I look back, I don’t just see wins on the field or trophies in the cabinet. I see the faces of the MLC School girls. I see our colourful house carnivals, I see the dedication of coaches, the unwavering support of parents, and the collective spirit that makes MLC School so special.

We’ve built something special together. We’ve created a sporting culture where every student feels valued, teamwork is paramount, and sportsmanship is celebrated. We’ve seen athletes go on to achieve incredible things, but more importantly, we’ve seen young women grow into confident, resilient, and compassionate individuals.

That, to me, is the true measure of success. It’s about the lessons learned in sport that translate into life skills. It’s about the friendships made, the challenges overcome, and the character built through sport.

I want to thank the students, past and present, who have given their all, who have shown grit and determination, and who have represented our school with pride. You are the heart and soul of our sporting program.

To the coaches, thank you for your tireless dedication, your expertise, and your commitment to nurturing not just athletes, but also good young women. You are the backbone of our teams.

To the parents, thank you for your unwavering support, your volunteer hours managing teams and getting your daughters to early morning trainings, and your belief in our program. You are our biggest cheerleaders.

And to the entire school community, thank you for creating an environment where every athlete is supported, and where we all come together to celebrate the achievements of our young sportswomen.

I will leave with many fond memories. I’ll cherish the memory of our many sports trips and competitions that were always lots of fun, and the friendly faces that come to the sports office window to say hello, or to tell us of your recent achievements. Though I will be moving on, MLC School will always have a special place in my heart.

Keep having a crack, keep trying something new and keep striving to achieve your personal best. Go MLC School!

Important Sports Notices

Important Sports Notices

The Sports Department is located in the Aquatic Centre on the pool deck level and is open from 7am – 5pm Monday to Friday should you wish to speak to a staff member.

REMEMBER!

Please make sure you regularly read the Sports Update each week, follow our Facebook page, and check your emails. These forms of communication will give you upcoming sports dates, the weekly fixtures, student achievements and other important information relating to carnivals, grading etc.

IMPORTANT PROCEDURES FOR SPORT

Absences from Sport

What to Do When You Are Not Able to Make Training or a Game

On the rare occasions that it may be necessary for a player to miss training or a competition, please follow these instructions.

  • If the inability to attend is known in advance – a written explanation (email) from the player’s parent/guardian is to be given to the coach and sports department in advance. This notice should be given as early as possible.
  • If the player is absent from school on the day of training or on competition day – the player’s parent/guardian is asked to advise the coach and sports department of their child’s absence from training or the game.
  • Do not ask your friends or team mates to give your coach the message
  • Do give as much notice as possible
  • If there is a clash with another sport or school event, please speak with the sports department to determine which game/event you should attend.

Please Note: Continued failure to attend training or competitions without a timely written explanation is unacceptable and may jeopardise the player’s continued involvement in sport.

A member of the sports department will contact Parents/guardians of students whose non-attendance at training or games is not notified in the correct manner.

Pockets are only awarded to students who have met all requirements of training and games.

Wet Weather

What do I do if it is Wet Weather?

While on most occasions we would not cancel training for wet weather, cancellations may occur if rain is too heavy to train in or weather conditions deem it unsafe. Additionally, we may be required to cancel training when we cannot accommodate students safely in an indoor space.

FOR MORNING TRAINING

The decision to cancel any morning training sessions will be made by 8pm the night before training.

Wet weather cancellations will be posted on the MLC School Sport Facebook Page, and a notification on the MLC School app.

No Facebook post, or app notification means that activities will still go ahead.

FOR AFTER SCHOOL TRAINING

The decision to cancel any after school training sessions will be made by 1pm on the day of training.

Wet weather cancellations will be posted on the MLC School Sport Facebook Page and the MLC School app.

ON SATURDAYS

If you are playing an IPSHA Sport, please download the IPSHA App – this can be downloaded from the App store and has information for parents. It is also used to send push notifications for Girls Saturday Sport weather updates and for marshalling calls at Major Carnivals.

IPSHA normally make a decision about wet weather by 7am.

If you are playing an IGSA Sport, go to the following link https://igsasport.spawtz.com/

The IGSA website will let you know if your venue is closed or open.

When possible, we will also post the cancellations on our Sport Facebook Page and the MLC School app.

On all occasions, it is the individuals’ responsibility to check the wet weather information. The sports department, coaches and managers are not always in a position to relay any game cancellations.

Harriet wins through to the Region Final of the Plain English Speaking Award

Harriet wins through to the Region Final of the Plain English Speaking Award

On Thursday morning I accompanied our Year 11 Public Speaking student Harriet Hahn to a Sydney Local Final of the Plain English Speaking Competition.  There were nine speakers in the heat, and all presented their eight-minute prepared speech first before participating in a round of three-minute impromptu speeches. The standard of speeches and presentation was high from speakers ranging from Year 10 to Year 12.  It is a complex task to write a thoughtful and well-structured speech whose content catches the attention of the judges.  Harriet gave an insightful analysis of the motivations behind RUOK day and how the particular challenges of schizophrenia might be better dealt with by our society.  She was rewarded for her hard work and confident speaking skills with a win through to the Regional final to be held on 2nd June.

Harriet has represented MLC School at multiple public speaking events from Year 7 right through to this year and always puts in a focused effort that has been rewarded with many wins over the years.  She has developed her skills to a high level and over the next few weeks will be preparing to compete in two important competitions, the Plain English Region Final and the Final of the inaugural Dame Enid Lyons Oratory competition held at the Opera House on Wednesday 21 May 2025.  All this while also training and debating every week as our essential 3rd speaker in our Senior debating team.  Harriet is a great example of an MLC student who has used the opportunities provided by our co-curricular programs in Debating and Public Speaking to develop some lifelong skills and personal accomplishments.

IPSHA Debating

IPSHA Debating

IPSHA debating season began with a bang. There was no time to waste. With only ONE day to prepare for the debate topic: That we should ban school assemblies – the challenge was on.

The Year 6 team travelled to Trinity and faced their first debate in front of sea of boys. But they were not daunted. Their arguments were solid, they had communicated effectively as a team and the result was a double victory for MLC School. Congratulations to everyone involved.  Keep up the good work as the rest of the season progresses.

Craft Club Update

Craft Club Update

The Arts and Craft Club is back! This week, the Arts and Craft club-built connections-literally. The club meets weekly in SCG06 on Wednesday, and this week students were gathering to learn the art of bracelet making in a creative environment, with snacks! Many chose to make friendship bracelets with bead and charm-based designs, experimenting with color, texture, and patterns.

“I love how relaxing it is, and how many snacks there are!,” said one Year 6. “It’s a chance to chat with friends, but feel productive.”

The club participated in a competition at the end, where the winning participants were awarded a small slime toy for their efforts. Coming up, the club is planning for global charity “Days for Girls” to come and work with our members to package care kits for women in need.

With endless options for beads, the atmosphere at the club is always stress free. If you’re interested in the arts and craft club, drop by every week on Wednesday! We are open to all year groups, and all supplies are provided!

See you there next week!
