From the Head of Junior School

From the Head of Junior School

Thank you to our Year 3 parents who attended the Year 3 assembly this week. It is a lovely opportunity for the girls to showcase some of their learning.

Parent Workshops

This week we continued our offering of parent workshops, with Year 6 Strengthening Positive Online Behaviour and Pre-Kindergarten’s Laying the Foundations for Lifelong Learning. The feedback has been very positive. I appreciate that it is not possible for all parents to attend; however, these sessions are designed to be delivered in person and are therefore scheduled prior to our Celebrations of Learning.

Next Monday at 8am, Kindergarten’s Foundations of Early Literacy will be held in The Daphne Line Hall. Current Pre-Kindergarten parents are most welcome to attend.

Staffing News

As Term 1 concludes we thank Lina El-Khoury who has been teaching Year 3E. We are very fortunate to have such a skilled and dedicated educator on our team. Lina will continue to work at MLC School as a casual teacher whilst also working for the Faculty of Education at the University of NSW.

This week we announced that Eddie Park has been successfully appointed to the specialist teaching position of Technology, eLearning and Innovations Leader at PLC Sydney. This is a wonderful career opportunity for Eddie, and he will be greatly missed by students, parents and colleagues.

We will also greatly miss Deborah Doyle, better known as Miss Debbie. She has given so much to the girls and staff during her years at MLC Junior School. Deb is retiring at the end of this term, and we hope to see her occasionally as she joins our casual teacher assistant team. We wish Eddie and Deb all the very best for the future.

Cardboard Challenge – a great success

What a wonderful community event. The evening was a great success, filled with fun, teamwork, creativity and friendly competition, and we even managed to avoid the rain! Thank you for your support and participation. The train carriages were fantastic.

Congratulations to Mooramoora, the winner of the Cardboard Challenge trophy. The cardboard train can still be seen on the red carpet, with thanks to Bede Schofield, STEAM Lab Coordinator, Marie Cassar, STEM Coordinator, and others for their engineering prowess.

Year 3 to Year 6 Swimming Carnival

Cheers could be heard across the entire School as students in Year 3 to Year 5 participated in our annual Swimming Carnival. It was a day of great spirit, participation and competition. Thank you to our Director of Sport, Scott Carpenter, the Sports department, and all the Junior School staff who supported this fun event.

It was wonderful to see so many parents involved – many in House colours – cheering the girls on. Congratulations to Churunga for winning this year’s Swimming Carnival.

Crazy Hair Day

Crazy Hair Day is coming up on Tuesday 31 March, and we’re excited to invite everyone to take part while raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Students are encouraged to come to school with the craziest, wackiest, and most imaginative hairstyles they can dream up.

Remember to bring a gold coin donation, with all funds going to support the important work of the Leukaemia Foundation. Please note that hair dye and hair chalk are not permitted, however creativity and craziness are very much encouraged. We can’t wait to see the wonderful ideas you come up with, and we appreciate your support for this cause.

Easter Egg Drive

As in previous years, students in Year 3 to Year 6 are invited to donate chocolate to our Easter Egg Drive. This is a service initiative, in lieu of students receiving Easter eggs at school. Thank you for your donations by Wednesday 1 April 2026.

Collected Easter eggs will be donated to the following charities:

  • Parramatta Mission
  • Wayside Chapel
  • Loaves and Fishes, Ashfield

If other families would also like to donate to this very worthy cause, it would be greatly appreciated.

Art Competition

Art Competition

Independent Schools NSW is pleased to launch the World Teachers’ Day Student Art Competition 2026, inviting students from all Independent schools to create original artworks celebrating the remarkable work of teachers.

Teachers play a vital role in transforming our future. Through their work with students, they nurture curiosity, instil confidence and ignite a lifelong love of learning. Their dedication helps students uncover their unique strengths and prepares them for life beyond the classroom.

To recognise and celebrate this impact, students are invited to submit an original artwork that showcases the important role teachers play in their lives and communities. For World Teachers’ Day 2026, the competition theme is Transforming tomorrow, today.

Selected artworks will be featured as part of the 2026 World Teachers’ Day appreciation campaign, highlighting student voice and creativity across the Independent sector.

Prizes for the winning submissions have been generously donated by Eckersley’s Art & Craft.

  • Artworks must be original and created solely by the student submitting the entry.
  • Participants may use any artistic medium, including but not limited to painting, drawing, sculpture, digital art, mixed media, and collage
  • Submissions should be accompanied by a brief artist’s statement (maximum 100 words) explaining the inspiration behind the artwork.

Each school can submit a maximum of two entries, so the competition will initially be judged in school, with two finalists selected for submission to Independent Schools NSW.

Please hand entries to Ms Doull in the Junior School Art Studio by Friday 8 May 2026.

All the best to Year 9 and Cadets

Year 9 students and Cadets will be heading off next week for their anticipated camps. The Year 9 cohort will be split between Urban Challenge and Cadets.

Students participating in the Urban Challenge will take part in a clue-based adventure, complete with team themes and a Duke of Edinburgh trek along a stunning Sydney coastal walk.

At the same time, Cadets will embark on a full program of activities including hiking, kayaking and high ropes, with students experiencing overnight stays in hoochies and developing resilience, teamwork and leadership skills.

Extensive planning has gone into both programs, and we thank the many staff involved for their commitment and care. All students are expected to return by Thursday afternoon, after what promises to be a challenging, memorable and rewarding experience for our Year 9 cohort and our Cadets.

Japanese Cultural Exchange – Building Meaningful Friendships

Japanese Cultural Exchange – Building Meaningful Friendships

Japanese cultural exchange with Senzoku Gakuen

Over the past two weeks, we have had the pleasure of welcoming 20 students and their teacher Mr Nakajima from Senzoku Gakuen in Tokyo, Japan. This week, their principal, Ms Miyasaka, also joined us for the day and shared her appreciation for being able to participate alongside her students as Rev Vinnie led a beautiful chapel service.

We have been thoroughly impressed by the Senzoku students’ commitment to learning English. They introduced us to Japanese culture through engaging presentations on traditions like the tea ceremony, classic games such as Kendama (ball toss) and ayatori (string figures), wearing yukata (Summer kimono), Japanese calligraphy, and origami. These cultural activities have enriched our community and inspired our students to deepen their interest in studying Japanese.

During their stay in Australia, the visiting students noted several distinct differences. They commented on the intense heat and the abundance of birds, whose loud chirping surprised them. They reflected on Australians having a very friendly nature, greeting one another throughout the day, which is less frequent in Japan. They also noticed everyday items seemed bigger and were amused to find Australian snacks much sweeter than those back home.

The students have built meaningful friendships with their Australian peers. They appreciate the warm welcome and are reluctant to part with their MLC School friends at week’s end.

The experience of hosting the Senzoku Gakuen students has been deeply rewarding for MLC School. We are grateful to the Japanese students who have acted as buddies and the teachers who have welcomed them into their classes. We look forward to the possibility of visiting their school in Japan in the future.

Year 7

Year 7

As we approach the end of Term 1, it has been a timely moment for Year 7 to pause and reflect on experiences of Senior School so far. It is completely normal at this stage for students to feel tired, overwhelmed, or perhaps unsure about friendships as they settle into routines and expectations become clearer.

During this week’s Year Meeting, Angela Renwick Head of Students – Year 7 to Year 9, spoke to Year 7 about how small moments can sometimes feel bigger than they are, especially during this time of the term. Angela also reminded Year 7 that MLC School is not about getting everything perfect. Instead, it is about showing respect, compassion, growth and courage. When things start to feel a bit hard or tricky, it is okay to pause, choose the kindest response you can, and reach out for help early.

This week, Year 7 also planned and ran an Easter activity with their Big Sisters.  Many Luminaries played games on the Bird Bath Quad or planned an Easter egg hunt! As always, it was a great opportunity to strengthen the important vertical connections within the Senior School. Some photos from the morning are included below and in the Year 11 article which you can view here.

Finally, with just one week to go, Year 7 are reminded to ensure their lockers are clean and reset for Term 2. This includes removing excess paper, throwing out rubbish, and taking home books or resources no longer needed at school.

Head of Year 7

Year 8

Year 8

Week 9 has been another busy week for our Year 8 students as they continue to balance learning, wellbeing and end‑of‑term routines. Across the week, students completed several assessments, including Languages and Mathematics, and were encouraged to use effective study strategies to support their preparation and organisation. In Luminary, students engaged in independent, screen‑free study time and an end‑of‑term reflection.

During our Year Meeting this week, Year 8 had a talk with Year 9 and the Acting Director of Studies – Year 7 to Year 10, Elizabeth Gilberthorpe, about Academic Honesty. I encourage you to speak with your child about the types of things covered in this session and her take aways. It was very valuable and productive. Looking ahead to Week 10, Year 8 will engage in Big Sister/Little Sister Easter Craft sessions, Communion and need to think about clearing out their lockers for the end of the term next Thursday 2 April 2026.

Have a lovely weekend, and please reach out to the Luminary or myself if you have any concerns.

Strong Together – Year 8 Service

Strong Together – Year 8 Service

Our year has started strong!

Some of our volunteers from last year attended an event in March hosted by Inner West Neighbour Aid as part of Seniors week activities. The 2026 Seniors Festival theme was ‘Live Life in Colour’. Our students listened attentively to a panel who shared some of their stories and accompanied them on a walk through the 5 Senses Garden at Rhodes Park. A highlight was discovering cucamelons – small grape sized fruit that resemble tiny watermelons and have a tart, citrusy flavour – try them in your next salad!!

Our regular monthly service started mid March, and we are thrilled to see the new cohort of volunteers doing a tremendous job continuing success of the program. They were thrown in the deep end, participating in a media interview with Burwood Council about the intergenerational program.

Here’s what one of our students Manjima Dutta-Gupta had to say….

‘My first time at the Strong Together volunteering was absolutely amazing. I was nervous at first but when we started the icebreaker and got talking it was just fun. I got to know so many people and hear such wonderful stories; it was such a nice time to just interact and talk with one another and learn so much. I even got the advice of a lifetime “Your passion is your spark, but don’t let it burn you out, find your well and let that replenish you”.  And it’s the kindness, laughter and smiles filling the room that just want to make you stay and talk for ages. Overall I had such a lovely spectacular time at Inner West Neighbour Aid.’

And from the program coordinator Emel….

‘Feedback from our clients has again been fabulous! Everyone was impressed with the maturity of the girls and their thoughtful responses to the various questions, especially one about their plans for the future. Many also mentioned how genuine the students were and how much they enjoyed their positive, youthful energy. It was lovely hearing the clients chatting with each other and feel their enthusiasm for the program.’

Year 9

Year 9

The time has come to go on camp! Next week Year 9 will either head off on Cadet camp or will be exploring Sydney on the Urban Challenge camp.

All cadet information has been shared via Xavier Maling. For those joining the Urban Challenge camp, here are some important things to note:

Students are to arrive and be seated in the Bird Bath Quad playground by 8.10am on Monday 30 March 2026.

The MLC School camp mobile number is: 0477 667 797

As the camp lead teacher, I will have this mobile. This number is for emergencies only. If a parent needs to be contacted during the camp, it will be via this number. Please do not message this number for general check ins – teachers will be busy spending time with your daughters, face to face, for the duration of the camp.

As per the camp communication guidelines outlined in the Code of Conduct you can expect: an app message on arrival, one – two social media posts (not all students may be featured), and an app message regarding return time to school once we have left the camp site.

As much as you might want to know that your child is alright, please do not allow them to take their phone or smartwatch or ask them to take these devices to camp. This is a device free camp.

Additionally, we request that students do not bring any valuables. We cannot guarantee that they won’t get lost.

Don’t forget to check in via the Urban Challenge website. There will be parent challenges where you can earn the teams more points.

I’m looking forward to seeing the growth of the students and I hope that all students have a fabulous week and thoroughly enjoy themselves.

This week’s photos highlight our Year 9 students undertaking gate duty and raising the flags. It is pleasing to see them embracing these responsibilities and demonstrating their leadership within the School community.

– Kate Schurch
Head of Year 9

Year 10

Year 10

Welcome to the last two weeks of term – Week 9 has been busy with cadet camp preparation; co-curricular finals and the end of term wrap up of activities. Congratulations to our Year 10 Tildesley Tennis representatives: Liesl Wong and Harlow Elsibai for their participation in IGSA Tennis last week. Read the Tildesley article here. Our DDE students are continuing to work hard on their preparation for the performance in Paris during the DDE tour later this year. The Rowing season ended last week, and Niamh Canadas will be in the Water Polo finals against St Catherine’s on Saturday.

In year meeting this week, the girls started their Careers Action Plan. Jo Cilia, Head of Futures and Pathways, presented to Year 10 and Nicole Massara, Futures and Pathways, created a great new resource for the senior girls that has all their career information in the one place. There is information on  work experience, pathways for VET and university entry and subject prerequisites – all helpful tools for Year 10 to plan their subject choices next term. Please ask your daughters to show you the resource on Canvas, it’s brilliant.

Friendship was the theme of our activities in Luminary this week. Discussions were held in Luminary groups around friendship and managing change – how and why relationships change over time and recognising the differences between healthy and unhealthy friendships. Part of the discussion was about things we can and can’t control, setting boundaries, self-respect and self-awareness. To sum up, we asked the girls who they could turn to problem solve friendship concerns – family, teachers and their Luminary, as adults who have the life experience to listen and support. Stressful times such as assessment periods and change can place a strain on relationships at school and at home, so managing stress with good sleep, diet, exercise and balance is key.

We’re looking forward to the last week of term and have some great activities planned.

If you are concerned about an academic issue, please contact your daughter’s class teacher. For pastoral and wellbeing issues, please reach out to your daughter’s Luminary or me on 02 8741 9736 and sconnolly1@mlcsys.nsw.edu. I am available for meetings on site and on Teams, Monday to Friday.

Head of Year 10

Year 11

Year 11

This week, Melissa Boyd, Deputy Principal and Sarah Jauncey, Director of Experiential Learning, officially launched Sony Foundation Camp 2026 with Year 11. The Sony Foundation Camp is an absolute highlight of the MLC School calendar, and it is incredibly exciting that it is now the Year 11 girls’ opportunity to step into this meaningful and rewarding experience.

Sony Foundation Camp is a four-day, three-night camp held at Land’s Edge, Mosman, where Year 11 students support children with additional needs aged 7–15 years. Preparation begins well in advance, with training days scheduled for Monday 20 July and Sunday 11 October 2026, before the camp itself runs from Wednesday 9 to Saturday 12 December 2026, concluding with a special Chapel Service and Christmas celebration.

If your daughter is interested in being involved, they are encouraged to apply, with the selection process involving a written application, interviews, role allocation and rigorous training. Applications close on Thursday 2 April 2026 at 3.15pm (no exceptions), and I strongly encourage all Year 11 students to consider applying for this unique and deeply rewarding opportunity.

On Thursday, it was the Year 7 students’ turn to host Big Sister/Little Sister, and it was wonderful to see Year 11 students supporting them in running a wide range of activities, including Easter egg hunts, games and quizzes. These moments continue to strengthen connections across the School and highlight the positive leadership Year 11 demonstrates within our School community.

We also wish all our Year 11 Cadet students a wonderful experience as they embark on Cadet Camp next week. We look forward to hearing about their adventures and achievements when we return in Term 2.

Year 12

Year 12

Congratulations go out to all of Year 12 on reaching the end of their two-week block of half yearly examinations! We are all incredibly proud of their hard work, determination, and the positive spirit shown here at school over the past fortnight.

As we look forward to the Easter break, there are still so many exciting things to unfold over the coming few days. Year 12 Rowers have already left for Tasmania to begin competing at the National Rowing Championships. The Advanced Party departed earlier today for the annual AFX Cadet Camp at Eungai with the remainder of Cadets to follow on either Sunday or Monday.

Thank you as always to our Year 12 families and carers for their ongoing support of the girls through this first academic milestone of this final year.

We are all thrilled to welcome Year 12 back on Monday for the final four days of term. This coming week, students will be given an opportunity to start the all-important reflection process, where they consider their academic engagement this term and make clear plans for the term ahead. Students will also have some opportunity to celebrate Easter alongside their Little Sisters from Year 8.

Head of Composition Presents at the Composing Futures Conference

I was thrilled to be invited to present at this year’s Music Education Conference organised by Independent Schools NSW (ISNSW) entitled Composing Futures: Creativity, Culture and Connection in the Music Classroom which took place on Tuesday 24 March.

The lineup included Dr James Humberstone (Sydney Conservatorium of Music, ex MLC School teacher), Amy Richardson (Head of Music, Santa Sabina), and Dr Candace Kruger (Griffith University).

Throughout the day, we gained crucial insights into the new Depth Study component of the new 7-10 Music Syllabus, as well as Educative Evidence Based Practice recommendations for music classrooms based on fresh research.

My own presentation centred around practical strategies for composing in the music classroom. I put the attending teachers in their students’ shoes, calling upon them to improvise, sing and compose. They were impressed when I showed them exercises that MLC School music students had successfully tackled.

The day had a brilliant atmosphere and I can’t wait to bring the insights I gained back to MLC School. Many thanks to Melissa McMahon, Head of Learning and Teaching, Amy Murphy, Director of Professional Practice Learning and Teaching, and Trevor Mee, Director of Music, for encouraging me to pursue this professional development opportunity.

From the Principal

On Tuesday evening, the House of Lords was alive with the chatter and energy emanating from the 140th Anniversary reunion in London. The event was graciously hosted by Old Girl Baroness Natalie Bennett (1983) of Manor Castle. Natalie served as the leader of the Green Party of England and Wales from 2012 to 2016. During her tenure, she focused on social justice, environmental sustainability, and democratic reform and she remains active in the House of Lords, advocating for issues such as universal basic income, and climate action.

As well as hosting our event on Tuesday evening, she busily dashed back into the House to debate and vote on an important issue before returning to address us all. Natalie described the importance of the ‘old boys network’ when it comes to having bills passed within the House and noted that as women, we need to build our own networks in order to have that same influence. She emphasised that MLC School reunions provide the perfect opportunity do just that and thanked the School for making such an opportunity possible.

Those in attendance ranged from Ros Coulson, who graduated in 1955 through to members of the classes of 2023 and 2025 who are studying or taking a gap year in the United Kingdom.

I never cease to be impressed by our Old Girls, they are such extraordinary women. Whether they graduated 30, 40, 50 years ago or in the last few years, they share common character attributes that span the generations. These include a quiet inner strength; a commitment to making a difference and working hard to achieve it; and a willingness to say what needs to be said. In my conversations, many also emphasised how the skills that they developed by being involved in co-curricular activities had later translated into opportunities beyond school.

We can sometimes lose sight of the ‘long game’  – the purpose of education. These women remind me that what really counts cannot be simply measured by an ATAR, a prize, or a leadership position while at school – it is who we become and how we make our way in the world that determines our success.  Hence the importance of ensuring a well-rounded education that provides the right amount of challenge for our girls across a range of pursuits.

In the coming months we will host our annual reunions for the classes of 2016, 2006, 1996, 1986 (and so on) and welcome everyone back on our 140th Anniversary Back to College Open Day and our Boarders for lunch on Friday 1 May 2026 – please spread the word to any former or prospective staff, students, parents and family members.

And finally, I hope that you have had a chance to see the fabulous Creative Types episode featuring MLC School Old Girl Andrea Lam (1999) on ABC iView.

As part of the episode Andrea returns to MLC School to reflect on her journey to becoming one of Australia’s most highly respected concert pianists and to share her expertise with current student Sylvia Li (Year 8) in a lesson filmed in our Music Centre. It is inspirational and yet another example of just where an MLC School education could take a student.

UTS Bachelor of Accounting Co-operative Scholarship – An MLC School Connection

UTS Bachelor of Accounting Co-operative Scholarship – An MLC School Connection

This week I attended the UTS Welcoming Ceremony and Awards Night for students in the Bachelor of Accounting Co-operative Scholarship. It was a memorable evening and a pleasure to see the continued presence of MLC School Old Girls within such a competitive and long running program of 36 years.

The Bachelor of Accounting Co-operative Scholarship accepts just 30 students each year that combines with a demanding academic program with structured industry placements, that provides corporate experience, critical to developing a competitive employment advantage. Students work with a wide range of corporate and specialist accounting firms, including Ernst and Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Lendlease, Macquarie Bank, MA Financial, QBE, Dexus, JD Sports, Coca Cola, Stockland, GPT, and others.

This year, Angelina Le (2025) was welcomed into the program, continuing a strong pattern of success for MLC School. She follows Ava Dean (2024), Mia Ecker (2023), and Briana Tran (2022). In total, MLC School graduates have secured five places in the program over the past six years, including four consecutive years. These students have not only gained entry into the program but have also been recognised for their achievements while enrolled. Briana Tran (2022) received a Distinction Achievement Award, while Ava Dean (2024) was awarded for an outstanding business case study project during her time in the scholarship.

While reading through the ceremony program on the night, it was striking to see how the 2026 intake recipients were described. Despite coming from different schools and backgrounds, every successful applicant was recognised for demonstrating a holistic approach to their high school education. Alongside strong academic results, these students had held leadership roles, contributed to their school and House communities, committed to sport, and engaged in a wide range of co-curricular activities. This reaffirms the importance of our school’s emphasis on character education as an additional layer to our academic rigour.

Angelina was no different. During her time at MLC School, she served as House Captain of Whitley, was actively involved in the Cadets Program, competed in MLC School 1sts Basketball and Volleyball, and strongly supported the Sony Foundation Camp initiative in Year 11. Her pathway reflects the balance of leadership, service, and commitment that both our school programs and many in-demand university courses, like the Co-Operative Scholarship, consistently seeks to prioritise.

What stood out most on the evening was the strength of the MLC School Old Girls network. Although these students come from different year groups and may not have known each other well while at school, there was an immediate sense of connection and support. Being part of the same MLC School Old Girls community encouraged conversation, mentorship, and confidence when making introductions, to their new respective networks, at both university and professional levels.

As a teacher, it was rewarding to see where former students have found themselves after leaving the school gates. Even more powerful was seeing how the MLC School Old Girls network continues to provide connection, opportunity, and support well beyond graduation. It was a clear reminder that the relationships built at school endure long after students move on.

From the Head of Learning and Teaching – Teachers as Learners

From the Head of Learning and Teaching – Teachers as Learners

To be the very best teachers they can be for our girls, at MLC School we are interested in growing our teachers as learners. We encourage them to embrace further study opportunities and we provide a vibrant professional learning community that empowers teachers to experiment with pedagogy in a collegial and safe environment. We want our girls to know that learning involves productive struggle and sometimes, failure. By modelling positive risk-taking and challenge as learners, teachers create a space for students to tackle the challenges of learning head-on.

This week, we are acknowledging and recognising the ways in which two of our teachers are stretching themselves as learners.

We are proud to announce that Luke Philpotts, our new Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) teacher, recently achieved first place in the Legal Studies’ Association Legal Briefs’ journal for his article entitled, Seeing the Unseen: The Government’s Approach to Coercive Control Reform. Luke’s article focused specifically on Domestic Violence and Coercive Control Reform – one of the biggest issues facing the criminal justice system in Australia at the moment.

In a subject shaped by constant law reform, textbooks can become outdated almost as soon as they are published. Legal Briefs enables teachers to keep their finger on the pulse of legal change, while also fostering professional dialogue through the sharing of lesson ideas, pedagogical approaches, and high-quality Legal Studies resources.

We are also celebrating Head of Composition, Alice Chance’s contribution to the Music Teachers’ Association Conference. You can read more about Alice’s achievement HERE. Congratulations to both Luke and Alice.

Please Meet New Staff Member – Codie Beerden

Please Meet New Staff Member – Codie Beerden

Spotlight on Codie Beerden, English teacher

New English teacher Codie Beerden brings energy, curiosity and a deep belief in lifelong learning to the classroom. I sat down with Codie to hear about the path that led her to teaching and what she’s excited to explore with students at MLC School.

Tell us a little about your background

Growing up, I was one of nine students from my high school to make it into university, so education has always felt both hard-won and deeply valuable. I also had an incredible Legal Studies teacher who inspired me to become a teacher who was someone who showed me what it looks like to champion young people and hold high expectations with real care.

I began my career at Chester Hill High School through a targeted graduate position. This was an especially meaningful start because it’s where both of my parents went to school. I trained in English and History, and over time took on roles that allowed me to support students beyond the classroom, including Year Advisor, Debating Coordinator and helping lead events like Multicultural Day.

I’ve always liked to keep moving and learning, so I later went to Marsden High School to teach English. It was one of those ‘jump in and grow quickly’ moments as within three months, the Head Teacher left, and I was successful in attaining the Head of English position.

What attracted you to MLC School?

The message of Daring to Be More really resonated with me, especially the way it invites both students and staff to stay curious and to keep moving forward as learners and leaders. I’m excited by the idea of learning about the process of learning: encouraging students to experiment, take risks, reflect and try again. Once you catch the learning bug, you want to keep learning and I don’t think we should ever become complacent.

What struck me straight away was the professional warmth of the community. I’ve felt genuinely supported to experiment at MLC School. There’s a safety net and a shared sense that we’re all in this together. The conversations about learning here are thoughtful and generous, and there’s a calm, positive energy. Nobody is walking in the shadows; any negativity is quickly outweighed by collegiality.

What do you love about teaching English?

English is such a practical, creative space. We read, we write, we play with language – and we learn how stories and ideas shape the way we see the world. I love that students can experiment, refine their thinking and find their voice. There’s always another interpretation to consider, another way to craft a sentence, another perspective to sit with.

What are your best hopes for English students at MLC School?

My hope is that students build the skills that give them confidence because when you can communicate clearly, you can do just about anything. I also want students to genuinely enjoy English. It’s a mandatory subject, and sometimes that can bring a bit of ‘tall poppy syndrome’, where students feel pressure to perform rather than permission to explore. I want our classrooms to be comfortable spaces where it’s safe to try things, make mistakes and grow.

Ultimately, I’d love students to leave with the sense that reading and writing can be part of their natural skillset, not just something you do for an assessment. English should feel a little like being an artist: experimenting, taking creative risks, and sometimes being a bit silly. In my classroom, mistakes are part of learning and growth (I’m even a fan of banning whiteout), because what matters most is the thinking and the process.

What do you love to do when you’re not teaching?

I’m a bit of a multitasker – there’s often an audiobook playing while I’m crocheting and watching a film. I also try to carve out as much downtime as possible, because teaching is such a full, busy job.

I love being in the park with my boys and seeing the world the way they see it – it really grounds me. Books and films do that too: they’re different ways of stepping into other people’s perspectives. And crochet is my way of creating something tangible. I love making things for other people and putting something a little handmade out into the world.

How are you settling in at MLC School?

Really well. It’s been a welcoming start, and I’ve been grateful for how generous people are with their time and expertise. I’m enjoying getting to know students and colleagues, learning the rhythm of the School, and finding the places where I can contribute – and where I can keep learning.

Study Support Opportunities

Study Support Opportunities

MLC School offers two Study Support Opportunities:

  • Year 11 and Year 12 After-Hours Study Hub
  • Year 7 to Year 12 Study Hub+ – please click here to read further and to access the nomination form.

These operate 3.30pm–6pm Monday to Thursday during term time (please note they run till Wednesday only next week).

Year 11 and Year 12 After-Hours Study Hub

Recognising the importance of a conducive environment for focused study, MLC School has established a free after-hours Study Hub exclusively for our Year 11 and Year 12 students. Located on Level 3 of the Senior Centre, the Study Hub provides a quiet and supportive space where students can concentrate on their studies, complete assessments, and prepare for examinations under the supervision of experienced MLC School staff across many subject areas.

Key Features:

  • Experienced staff: Two teachers rostered each evening from different subject areas, to guide and assist students with their academic queries and provide valuable feedback.
  • Convenient location: Level 3 of the Senior Centre, providing easy access for Senior students.
  • Flexible hours: The study hub is open Monday to Thursday 3.30pm–6pm, allowing students to make the best use of their time outside regular school hours. Partial attendance is welcome.

We encourage all Year 11 and Year 12 students to take advantage of this excellent resource to enhance their learning experience and achieve their academic goals. The staff roster will be published in advance of each week in Audacia, the School newsletter. Students will be required to sign in on arrival to Study Hub and sign out on departure, as part of our student welfare management system.

There is no need to register for this program.

Study Hub+

Study Hub+

Term 1 2026 Study Hub+  – Fill in form

Study Hub+ is MLC School’s structured, pay‑per‑use after‑school study support program, designed for students in Year 7 to Year 12 who would benefit from more personalised academic guidance in a focused and supportive environment.

While the Study Hub provides a supervised space for independent study for Year 11 and Year 12, Study Hub+ offers a higher level of individualised, responsive support. Sessions are student‑led, allowing mentors to tailor assistance based on each student’s specific needs on the day. This may include consolidating class learning, clarifying assessment requirements, preparing for examinations, or developing effective and sustainable study routines.

Led by Program Coordinator Ela Huber, Study Hub+ is supported by a team of knowledgeable mentors, all of whom are pre‑service teachers or working towards a career in education. Most mentors are in the final stages of their undergraduate or Master of Teaching degrees and bring with them a strong depth of subject knowledge, alongside up‑to‑date, innovative and curriculum‑aligned resources. This ensures students receive guidance that is relevant and closely aligned with classroom expectations.

A key strength of Study Hub+ is the opportunity for students to work alongside a mentor, particularly when engaging with written tasks. Mentors can read through work with students, ask guiding questions, suggest improvements to structure, clarity and expression, and help students refine their ideas and arguments. While mentors are unable to mark work or provide grades, they can offer valuable feedback and editing support prior to submission, helping students better understand how to improve their work independently.

Mentors can support students with:

  • Revising and consolidating key concepts and class content
  • Examination preparation and revision strategies
  • Planning and organising assessments and study schedules
  • Reading through drafts alongside students and suggesting edits or refinements
  • Developing confidence, independence and effective study habits

Study Hub+ also plays an important role in supporting students in an era where AI is a valuable and encouraged tool at MLC School, but one that requires thoughtful, ethical and informed use. Students can sometimes over‑rely on AI when completing homework and assessments, which may leave them unsure about underlying concepts, task expectations or how to improve their own work.

At Study Hub+, mentors help reinforce the appropriate and ethical use of AI by guiding students to use these tools as a support for learning rather than a replacement for thinking. Mentors work with students to unpack questions, clarify concepts, check understanding and refine ideas, ensuring students remain actively engaged in their learning and confident in the work they submit.

Program Overview

  • Schedule: Monday to Thursday, 3.30pm–6pm (term time)
  • Location: Level 1, Senior Centre
  • Cost: $25 per session (2.5 hours) and charged to your daughter’s account at the end of term
  • Environment: Phone‑free zone to minimise distractions and promote positive study habits

Families are encouraged to register on a termly basis to support the development of consistent study routines, although weekly bookings remain available via Omnia and Audacia, the School e-newsletter. Students will receive a reminder email at approximately 2pm on their scheduled day confirming their session and assigned room.

Round Square – MLC School Hosts Inspiring International Women’s Day Postcard

Round Square – MLC School Hosts Inspiring International Women’s Day Postcard

This week, MLC School was proud to host the annual International Women’s Day Postcard, bringing together students from across Australia and around the world for a thoughtful and engaging discussion centred on the 2026 theme, Balancing the Scales.

Despite some initial logistical challenges, our students demonstrated impressive flexibility, adaptability and composure. They responded to the changing circumstances with maturity, ensuring the event continued smoothly and that each conversation was led with articulation, depth and grace. Their ability to remain calm under pressure while creating a welcoming and inclusive environment was a credit to both themselves and the spirit of Round Square.

The event drew an exciting and diverse group of delegates, with participants joining from as close as Newcastle and Orange, and as far as Tasmania, India and North Carolina, USA. This rich mix of perspectives added enormous value to the discussions, allowing students to explore issues surrounding gender equity through a global lens.

Leading the Baraza groups were an outstanding team of student facilitators: Katherine Woo, Melisande Pitman, Caydence Sumantri and Hemani Ramesh from Year 10; Angelina Xu, Adelaide Abernethy and Ava McLean from Year 11; Jordan Vo from Year 12; and Round Square and Community Captain Emily Wu (Year 12). These student leaders guided conversations with confidence, empathy and insight, helping delegates feel heard while encouraging meaningful and respectful dialogue.

The Postcard was a wonderful example of student leadership in action and reflected MLC School’s commitment to fostering internationally minded young women who are prepared to engage thoughtfully with important global issues.

‘Facilitating a Baraza group for the International Women’s Day event was such a rewarding experience. It was inspiring to hear the diverse stories and perspectives shared, which reminded me how powerful open conversations can be in bringing people together even people with completely different backgrounds and experiences.’
– Hemani Ramesh (Year 10)
