From the Principal – Who should you call?

As you have no doubt discovered, MLC School is a complex organisation. For this reason, I thought it important to outline some of the roles and responsibilities and to provide guidelines that will assist you to contact those who can resolve any matters as quickly as possible.

As a general guide, your first contact should be with the person closest to the concern.

For academic matters this will be your daughter’s class or subject teacher.

This is an important first step as the teacher will usually be able to provide solutions or suggestions to address the concern and may also have insight into the situation of which you are unaware.

In the Senior School, if an academic matter remains unresolved, the Head of Department should be contacted.

If you are concerned about your daughter’s wellbeing, in the Junior School the class teacher is once again your first point of contact. In the Senior School, the Heads of Year will be able to assist.

The Junior School and Senior School have Deputy Heads of School with specific responsibilities for Academic and Pastoral/ Wellbeing leadership. They are involved in managing more complex or unresolved matters and will provide support and expert advice to their teams and to parents and carers as required.

The Heads of School, Daniel Sandral (Junior School) and Joanna Graffen (Senior School), are responsible for the day-to-day management of all aspects of their respective schools and more serious or unresolved matters should be escalated to them.

There are also Executive staff with whole school roles. They include Deputy Principal Melissa Boyd who has responsibility for of all aspects of whole school operations (including co-curricular sport and music) and student wellbeing. Linda Emms, as Head of Learning and Teaching, is responsible for the quality of pedagogy and learning in every classroom and the associated operational requirements.

As well as being visible and available to members of the MLC School community, my role is to be focused on the future. Working closely with the School Council, I am responsible for ensuring that the planned strategy is realised; that our approach to risk and compliance are best practice; that we plan for the future by carefully managing enrolment numbers; that we are regularly reviewing our masterplan; working with the Business Manager to ensure that we have the capacity to build new facilities and upgrade our current ones; and to ensure that we are up to date with current research and understandings in education and school operations. Representing the best interests of MLC School, girls’ education and independent school education is also key and, for this reason, I serve on several boards and regularly attend meetings where this representation is needed.

Principal

From the Deputy Principal – Connection

As we begin the new school year, it is important to remember the role that connection plays in building a strong school community. Connection is vital for fostering a positive learning environment, where students feel supported, encouraged, and motivated to learn. This weekend, I had the privilege of attending our first Senior School Family House Chapel Services for Whitley and Wade. I was taken with the beauty of this tradition, hoping that each student and their families felt connected to the rich MLC School history, fostering a sense of continuity, and belonging.

The Whitley House service theme Unity is strength, emphasised the importance of working together and being united to achieve our common goals. Whitley students asked us to consider that when we work together and collaborate, we can accomplish more than they would be able to achieve on our own. Year 12 students were presented with a candle to celebrate their time as Whitley students and to recognise their leadership. Thank you to the generosity of Whitley families whose offerings during the service will support Uniting, who seek to improve the lives of the elderly through fostering social connections.

The Wade House service on Female Empowerment focused on enabling women to have control over their own lives and be able to make decisions that affect them. Each Year 12 student tied a ribbon to the Wade House tree to signify their belonging and connection to Wade House. Thank you to the generosity of Wade families whose offerings will be used to support Dress for Success, an organisation that works with women to find employment opportunities, allowing them to gain qualifications and experience to ensure their financial independence.

Between services, Wade and Whitley families joined together in Potts Hall for morning tea. The act of sharing a meal with others was not just about enjoying delicious treats, but also an opportunity for people to connect, bond, and build relationships. Traditions like these House Chapel Family Services are a way of passing down important values and teachings from generation to generation, including our moral values, religious beliefs, and cultural practices that help us to understand our place in the world and how we should interact with others.

As a School community, we are committed to fostering connections between students, teachers, and families. We thank the students, parents, grandparents and siblings (and even a Whitley pet) who joined us last weekend and encourage everyone to continue to take an active role in building and strengthening our school community through participation in our events, volunteering, and engaging with one another in meaningful ways.

From the Head of Learning and Teaching – NAPLAN

From the Head of Learning and Teaching – NAPLAN

This week saw the updating of the My School website with the 2022 NAPLAN data. The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills. Each year students in Year 3, Year 5, Year 7 and Year 9 participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

At MLC School we were very pleased with how well the students performed overall. In the table below you can see how MLC School performed in relation to statistically similar schools. The pale green and dark green bands indicate where our school average performance was above and well above like schools.

In 2023 there has been a change to the timing of NAPLAN. Unlike previous years the testing will occur in Term 1. The reason for this change is so that results can be returned to schools earlier in the year which will support teachers to understand the learning needs of their students and plan accordingly. At MLC School the tests will take place Wednesday 15 March to Friday 17 March 2023.

The testing is conducted online so it is important that your daughter’s device is in good working order and fully charged on the day if she is in Year 5, Year 7 or Year 9. Girls in Year 5 should also remember to bring their keyboard to school as the writing test will be conducted online. Year 3 will complete their testing using the iPads provided by the School. Their writing test will be completed by hand. The School will have backup devices in place for any emergencies that occur on the day. All students must bring headphones.

NAPLAN tests are just one part of our school learning assessment program and questions are primarily based on knowledge, understanding and skills gained from the prior year of schooling. Your daughter does not need to study for these tests. She has been well prepared by the academic program in place at MLC School. The best preparation for NAPLAN is to make sure your daughter has a good night’s rest the evening before and that she has had a healthy breakfast before commencing the school day.

In the coming weeks we will undertake activities to help the girls to become familiar with the format and functionality of the online tests. These activities are not an assessment of student ability and will not be marked. If you would like to see the type of questions asked on these tests parents can access the public demonstration site to familiarise themselves with NAPLAN and the types of questions and tools available.

More detail about NAPLAN can be found in the below fact sheets. If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact Natalie Hird, Deputy Head of Junior School – Learning for Year 3 and Year 5 or Penny Pachos, Deputy Head of Senior School – Academic for Year 7 and Year 9.

From the Head of Junior School

The wet weather this week has resulted in our school photographers not been able to complete all our group photos. Another day is being arranged and we will inform you as soon as possible.

Year 3 to Year 5 Cross Country

The wet also hindered our Cross Country Carnival on Thursday for Year 3 to Year 5 and some Year 6 girls. This is the first interschool House sports event for the year and it was great to see our newly appointed Sports Captains leading the cheering and demonstrating sportspersonship. Whilst we were unable to conduct the fun run, we were able to complete all the age championship races. Congratulations to all the girls who gave their ‘personal best’ and to those students who were successful to next represent MLC School at the IPSHA Cross Country Carnival. Thank you to our Sports Department for hosting our carnival.

Staff Spotlight – Lucy Aurelius

Lucy Aurelius is a creative and dedicated primary school teacher from the U.K., where she has taught mainly Kindergarten to Year 2 for 15 years. Having recently relocated to Sydney from London with her Australian husband and 9-year-old daughter she is very excited to continue her teaching career at MLC School. Children’s wellbeing is at the heart of all she does, and this was the focus on her post-graduate studies at Kingston University. She firmly believes that children learn best when they are happy and strives to provide a welcoming, engaging environment in which her students can thrive. In her spare time, she enjoys singing in a choir (and has led school choirs), going to the theatre, reading (including a passion for children’s books; sharing stories with her class is one of her favourite activities) and being out in nature with her family. She is very much looking forward to exploring more of our beautiful country.

From the Deputy Head of Junior School – Wellbeing – Cyber Safety and Social Media

From the Deputy Head of Junior School – Wellbeing – Cyber Safety and Social Media

No matter how young our children are, they are never too young to learn about good digital citizenship. Too often children have access to devices and use them in ways that we, as parents, are not aware. Young people today are often much more tech savvy than their parents. The issue of setting up rules around device use and supervising our children online is a serious one.

I know, from talking to parents, that device use is a concern in our community. Understandably, parents find it difficult to navigate what “everyone else” is allowed to do and what you, as parents, feel comfortable allowing your child to access.

I came across an article by Michelle Mitchell titled Setting up Social Media Safely: A Crash Course for Parents of Tween girls, which I think is worth a read.

At school your daughters receive cyber safety education in Library lessons. Jody Gilroy ensures the girls are made aware of keeping safe and being good digital citizens online. We are also very clear with parents and the girls that social media has recommended ages for using the sites and this is for a very good reason. So many issues we deal with, at school, involve the inappropriate use of social media because young people do not understand the ramifications of how they use these sites.

Michelle Mitchell gives some thoughts to consider when your children have access to devices, but especially when considering giving them a mobile phone and access to the internet. She says to consider not only when to buy a phone but how young people are allowed on social media.

As a brief overview some things she says to consider are:

  • Never give a device as a gift
  • Have clear usage agreements
  • Insist on transparency
  • Talk openly about issues your daughter may face online
  • Expect the best and prepare for the worst

At the end of the article Michelle also gives several names of cyber experts families can access. She recommends you follow some on social for regular, bite sized information on trending platforms and safety issues. And don’t forget the eSafety Commissioner who provide a wide range of support for parents including technology agreements.

At MLC School we also have a Director of e-Learning, John Clear, who can be contacted should you wish to get any further advice.

It is so important that we work together to ensure we set boundaries and educate the girls to keep safe and be responsible digital citizens.

Junior School Collaborative Artwork – Every Heart Needs Art

This week, we unveiled our Junior School Collaborative Artwork – Every Heart Needs Art.

Each student in the Junior School from Pre-K to Year 5 created a beautiful mini artwork with a design unique to them. They represented themselves in their design with lines, shapes, patterns, symbols and images meaningful to them while focusing on the theme of ‘hearts’.

Our Junior School artists began by creating their design using their choice of oil pastels. Then they painted over the top with watercolours, creating a beautiful background. This technique is called watercolour resist because the watercolours resist the oil-based pastels.

The variety of designs and colours used by all girls in the Junior School has created a vivid and colourful collaborative artwork. This is a wonderful reflection of our school community – unique, vibrant and a delight to be a part of.

The message of our artwork, Every Heart Needs Art, highlights our collective love and appreciation for looking at and making art. Most importantly, art makes us happy!

Year 1 Excursion to Rouse Hill Estate

On Friday 17 February 2023, Year 1 students were immersed in history at the Rouse Hill Estate. Students experienced the types of chores children may have been responsible for in 1889, including collecting water from the pump, cleaning the stables, polishing saddles, ironing and more! All this before beginning a day at school! After lunch our students dressed up in aprons and got ready for school lessons such as sewing, writing using slate boards, and exercise class with the maypole. The teacher, Mrs Fox, was very strict. She even showed us the cane that was used in 1889 as a punishment for two boys who had dipped a girl’s braids into the ink well. There are so many differences between the past and the present. Schools, clothes, games, transport and jobs are just a few of the areas that we learnt about. We had a wonderful time being so engaged in this experience and can’t wait to put our learning into practice during our Collaborative Learning Project (CLP) lessons at our school in the year 2023.

A great start to Term 1 in the Junior School Library

What a start we had in the Junior School library this term.

We considered the theme for Safer Internet Week; Connect, Reflect, Protect in all grades, through story and discussion. Year 5 students were asked to create a google doodle to promote the theme. You will find a design by Ashwini Kanesalingam (Year 5) in the photos below. They were all so creative. Google should have asked our girls to design their Safer Internet Week design this year!

We celebrated Valentine’s Day with book gifts delivered to each class and students writing recommendations for books they wanted to promote.

Next week we welcome author Kate Foster to the Junior School. On Wednesday 1 March 2023, Kate Foster will meet with students in Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5. Kate Foster is author of Paws and the Bravest Word. Kate is skilled at writing stories with neurodivergent characters and characters dealing with life changes. She will join us to talk about her books and life as an author.

If you would like to purchase her books, please click here to order.

2023 Junior School Parent Ambassadors and P&F Year Representatives

2023 Junior School Parent Ambassadors and P&F Year Representatives

The MLC School P&F is a vital forum for parent input and discussion regarding issues across the School. A key role for the P&F is to provide a means to connect all parents and carers through school community events and supports the students and the School with a number of key fundraising initiatives.

There are some key roles we would like to take the opportunity to outline for our community. In addition to our Junior School P&F Executive Committee, we have two additional roles in the Junior School:

  • Parent Ambassadors for each year group
  • P&F Year Representatives

Year Group Parent Ambassadors are an integral part of the MLC School community. The Parent Ambassadors support the School community by:

  • Arranging smaller social gatherings for individual year groups
  • Assisting with communications and minor issues
  • Guiding our new families on getting settled and providing day-to-day information for parents
  • Assist the P&F with the running and organisation of P&F fundraising events and social functions.

Junior School Year groups help coordinate the JS P&F events and fundraising activities during the year and manage parent volunteers for their Year group to help at International Night. Your Parent Ambassadors will be in touch soon to set up a roster of volunteers for International Night – we look forward to seeing you there!

The schedule of P&F events and fundraising activities for 2023 is as follows:

Date Event JS Year Group responsible
Friday 24 March 2023 International Night All year groups (Pre-K to Year 6)
Friday 5 May 2023 Mother Daughter Disco Year 2
Wednesday 10 May to Friday 12 May 2023 Mother’s Day Stall/raffle/personalised gift Year 1
Wednesday 30 August to Friday 1 September 2023 Father’s Day Stall/raffle/personalised gift Pre-K and Kindergarten
Friday 1 September 2023 Father Daughter Cardboard Challenge Year 3
Friday 8 September 2023 Book Week Book Swap Year 4

*dates subject to change.

Our Junior School P&F Year Representatives make up a subcommittee of the P&F. The role of the P&F Year Representatives includes:

  • Assisting in strengthening communication between each year group and the P&F and also across the Parent Ambassador groups
  • Working with Parent Ambassadors to communicate with the P&F Executive team any matters raised by parents that are appropriate for consideration or discussion by the P&F Executive
  • Working with Parent Ambassadors to assist with sharing any relevant P&F matters with their year group

Generally, the P&F gets involved with issues that impact a broad group of girls – either across specific grades or across the whole Junior School.  We encourage concerns and questions about individual matters to be directed to Junior School staff.

The 2023 Junior School P&F Year Representatives are:

  • Pre-Kindergarten: Karina Sumantri
  • Kindergarten: Jessica Tregeagle
  • Year 1: Billie Ashour
  • Year 2: Kacie Tulliani
  • Year 3: Baneesha Narang
  • Year 4: Dao Coorey
  • Year 5: Stephanie Kazacos
  • Year 6: Ming Kuo

The P&F Executive team thanks all of the Parent Ambassadors and Year Representatives for volunteering to help support the MLC School community in 2023!

JS P&F Executive

From the Head of Senior School – Academic Mentoring and Study Success

This year we have again allocated each Year 12 student with an academic mentor to assist them with support in managing their workloads and organisation. This support is in addition to the oversight already provided by Head of Year 12, Angela Renwick, teachers and key staff. Research has shown that mentoring and positive relationships can have a number of benefits including socio-emotional benefits, resilience and positive academic progress.

With this in mind, Year 12 students have each been allocated a teacher to provide regular check-ins and guidance when planning for upcoming assessment tasks. It is not necessarily one of their current teachers, and it is not designed to be a ‘tutoring’ relationship, but more of a motivational and organisational supportive relationship. Teachers spend time developing rapport and identifying stressors and supports that the students have in their lives, providing advice and guidance around ways to best harness their academic potential whilst also making the most of the many opportunities available at MLC School.

I was very pleased in my second meeting with one of my students this week when she brought in one of the study planners in that I had given her, claiming she had never used a planner before. Her words to me were; ‘I have never made lists like this before, it is so satisfying!’ It was certainly satisfying to me, that a teenager was up for trying a new process – and who doesn’t enjoy crossing something off a list!

Good luck to all the Year 12 students heading towards examinations next week; my advice to families is to have lots of chocolate and supportive hugs on hand!

Head of Senior School

Hearts for Hearts and International Women’s Day

Last week saw the inaugural MLC School Hearts for Hearts charity drive raising money for Heart Kids Australia. Heart Kids Australia is a fabulous charity which works with children with congenital heart diseases and their families providing support, care and information. Spreading love and happiness MLC School celebrated Valentine’s Day with cheer and a sense of joy. Each morning saw smiles as students came pouring in the gates as everyone enjoyed settling into Term 1 and the infusion of chocolate onto campus. Over five days we sold nearly 500 chocolates, and put together our positivity mural. The mural now on display in the Senior Centre is composed of hundreds of notes written by staff, students and even a few parents. The notes were messages of support, care, Taylor Swift song lyrics, positivity and fun. A sense of fun and happiness is infectious and that was seen across the School as everyone got involved with leaving a message for a friend, themselves or for the community as a whole. We’d like to thank everyone for their enthusiasm and in the wise words of one of our favourite notes pinned to the board ‘You are all amazing, unique and special. Have fun every day and don’t let anything get in your way!’.

A brief reminder that the International Women’s Day Breakfast is on Wednesday 8 March 2023 at 7am. Year 7

Another great week in Year 7 where students have adapted to the changing demands of the weather with great skill and absolutely no fuss. Year 7 students are navigating their new environment with such aplomb!

This week they had their individual photos taken with House photos and group photos to be held later (date to be advised). They had a Year meeting with the Deputy Head of Senior School – Pastoral, Andrew Taylor, and participated in bonding games during Luminary time.

As the term gets into full swing, please check in with the girls to see that they are managing their assessment tasks and homework load. Assessment tasks are starting to come in and they need to be allocating time at home to work on these tasks. Diary management is key here. If you would like to access the assessment schedule it is on the parent portal for you.

Please contact me if you have any concerns at all and I will leave you with a message from the health centre. Have a great weekend.

Year 8

Year 8

This week in Luminary time students worked together to come up with their top 10 rules for being in inclusive and respectful friendships. Some of the aims of this were to build on their sense of self, connections with others and to understand that being inclusive and respectful in and of all types of relationships is essential. I encourage you to speak with your child about what made their list, and what would make yours? In Year 8, particularly in Luminary sessions and Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) we talk about values and priorities. We discuss how these vary between people and how ‘finding your tribe’ is about finding people who although they may be different in personality, likes and dislikes, they align on their values.

Next week Year 8 students will have House time on Friday to assist with preparations for the House Swimming Carnival which is on Friday 10 March 2023. The swimming carnival is a compulsory school event, participation based and loads of fun. Ask your Year 8 student what their House theme is for 2023 and I encourage all Year 8 students to dress up and show their House spirit.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming school events and as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Claire White
Head of Year 8

Year 9

Across this week students have shown they are well and truly settled into their new routines. Excursions are running, assessments are being set or completed and students are starting to attend clinics across a range of subjects. As well as this, co-curricular activities and sports are back in full swing with students attending training in the mornings or workshops after school. It truly is fantastic to see the Year 9 cohort so committed to the experiences on offer at MLC School.

This week we saw the Middle Years Leaders (MYL) host the Middle Years Assembly, which was attended by students in Year 6 to Year 9. These assemblies are a wonderful way for students from the Middle Years to be recognised for their achievements and to share positive experiences with their peers. The MYL organised a quiz-style activity that the audience participated in. It involved a range of questions and some consequences for incorrect answers. I look forward to seeing what the MYL can offer the cohort and the Middle Years students’ this year as they keep looking to develop their role.

As I have done the last two weeks, I would like to share the insights of Year 9 following Safer Internet Day, which was held on Tuesday 7 February 2023. Year 9 students were asked to reflect on the theme for the year, Connect. Reflect. Protect. Below, in their own words, are what one group thought:

‘Connect – Connection in terms of e-safety means to communicate effectively, positively and socially. It also means to use social media and online platforms the way they are meant to (to connect socially with others) and to not take it for granted and use it against someone or to hurt or exclude someone.’

‘Reflect – Reflection in e-safety means to think carefully about what you’re writing and to not disrespect, harm or bully someone online. As mentioned in the video, don’t send someone anything that you wouldn’t say in person and a good test for this could be if your parent wouldn’t be happy with what you’ve sent, don’t send it.’

‘Protect – You can protect yourself by being educated and aware of what you are exposing yourself to and who you are connecting or communicating with. You need to make sure you are being safe online by educating yourself on signs of scams, cyber-bullying and knowing the ways in which you can report messages.’

Bridget Kovats
Head of Year 9

Year 10

Year 10 students had a great week. On Monday they visited the Sydney Jewish Museum as part of their History studies. Year 10 students are studying the Holocaust and a site visit to the museum was a very meaningful way to engage with the past. The students participated in workshops that consolidated their learning from class, including ones on genocide and the origins of the events. The thing they were most looking forward to was the survivor talks, where a survivor from the Holocaust shares their story. The girls were so respectful and gave their full attention, while also asking very insightful questions. The subject matter is very sensitive but the girls were able to connect with the guides, all of whom had Holocaust trauma experience in their families. Allowing your daughter to discuss her experience and share the story is also a very powerful way to engage with their learning. In class next week, the girls will be writing a reflection and an opportunity will be given to discuss their interpretation of the day.

As we head into the middle of the term, you might notice that your daughter is getting more tired as activities and assessments are creating a busy schedule. Schools are busy places and MLC School is no exception. Support with time management and commitments is something that Luminaries and I can offer as part of the Luminary program. This can be as part of a formal study plan or a chat about how students work best and what helps them stay motivated.

If you would like to discuss any aspect of your daughter’s progress, you can call me on 02 8741 9736 or email sconnolly1@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au for meetings via phone, Microsoft Teams or on site.

Year 10 Historians Visit the Sydney Jewish Museum

On Monday 20 February 2023, MLC School’s Year 10 cohort attended an excursion to the Sydney Jewish Museum as part of their investigation into World War Two and the Holocaust. Whilst all the girls were moved by the experience, particularly their engagement with a Holocaust Survivor, two have chosen to share.

Sophia Malas (Year 10)

‘One of history’s most recognised genocide was the Holocaust, or Shoah, in which 6 million Jewish, Romani, disabled, Jehovah’s Witness, and homosexual people were murdered by Nazi Germany. On Monday, as a Year group, we were lucky enough to further develop our understanding of this horrific event, by visiting the Sydney Jewish Museum. Entering the museum, I felt privileged to experience a memorable opportunity. I was able to discover new stories and learn more about the hardships of the Holocaust. We were separated into smaller groups and had a tour guide who showed us around the major parts of the history of this event. The guide herself, had a strong connection with the Holocaust as her father was a survivor. She had always felt the need to continue telling her father’s story to younger generations in hopes that they would carry the knowledge and stories to future generations. The most impactful part of the day for me was meeting a holocaust survivor named Dasia Black. Hearing her story, gave me a rare insight on the Holocaust and the severity of how it impacted a whole religion. Visiting the museum was a unique experience from which I gained new aspects, knowledge, and memories.’

Amelia Armstrong (Year 10)

‘On Monday 20 February 2023, we went to the Sydney Jewish Museum in Darlinghurst; it was an insightful and emotional experience for everyone. The day began with a presentation on World War II and the Holocaust, which was a great way to consolidate what we have been learning in class over the past few weeks. Following this, we were taken around the Museum by a guide – my group was lucky enough to be guided by a second-generation descendant of a survivor of the Holocaust. One of the most confronting sections of the Museum was the Children’s Memorial – the names and photos of all the 1.5 million children senselessly murdered during the Holocaust were displayed. After this, we were extremely fortunate to be able to meet a survivor from the Holocaust – her name was Dasia Black. She survived in the ghettos with her parents until 1942, when she was sent to live with a Catholic family. Sadly, both her parents were murdered in the Holocaust, leaving her orphaned. Once returning to her hometown, she discovered her Aunt and Uncle were still alive, and she was adopted. Her story left everyone with a newfound sympathy for the survivors and a deeper understanding of the devastating, lifelong effects it has had them. Overall, our excursion to the Sydney Jewish Museum was an extremely valuable and memorable experience which gave us all new insights into the horrors of the Holocaust and World War II. I am incredibly grateful we had this opportunity.’

Year 11

This week has seen our Term 1 Luminary Leaders run both Luminary sessions, so thank you to the following students for their collaboration and leadership:

  • Abbeythorpe – Angelina Hu (Year 11)
  • Booralee – Isabella Kristallis (Year 11)
  • Churunga – Sara Yaqub (Year 11)
  • Leawarra – Tiana Roins (Year 11)
  • Lester – Ava Dean (Year 11)
  • Mooramoora – Lily Hatton (Year 11)
  • Prescott – Vivian Qin (Year 11)
  • Sutton – Sofia Sefein (Year 11)
  • Wade – Sienna McCormack (Year 11)
  • Whitley – Catherine Kong (Year 11)

The group decided that for the first session, they would talk about the importance of sharing gratitude and then give students the opportunity to contribute leaves to a gratitude tree. The top things to be grateful for seemed to be our pets, our parents and our friends which is a good reminder of the importance of connections.

In our second session, the leadership team decided it would be beneficial to then write a personal letter of gratitude to someone in our community who may not expect it. Sharing gratitude is important because it can have a positive impact on both the giver and the receiver. Expressing gratitude can help build and strengthen relationships, increase feelings of happiness and wellbeing, and reduce stress and negative emotions. It can also promote a more positive and grateful mindset, leading to increased resilience and coping skills during difficult times. Sharing gratitude can be a simple yet powerful way to acknowledge and appreciate the good things in our lives and can help us cultivate a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the people and things that bring us joy and happiness.

I am certainly grateful that our Luminary leaders approached the sessions this week with such interest and care, and I’m proud of what they achieved.

Fiona Pow
Head of Year 11

Year 12

Often during the week before an examination block, I see the effects of the pressure building on the students which then begins to dissipate once examinations are under way. While some of Year 12 are discussing how they have self-doubts about their preparation, what I am seeing currently is a cohort determined to get through a challenging term. I have no doubts that a great many families are seeing and supporting a contrasting image at home. All these moments are building their skills, resilience and preparation for final examination and life beyond high school. If you have any concerns, please reach out to class teachers, Luminaries, or myself. I can be reached by emailing arenwick@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au or calling 02 8741 3278.

Traditions and memories

For the Ash Wednesday service this week, we were fortunate to have our own Year 12 Chapel, which is often the custom the week before the examination block, to wish them on their way. This is one of last few year group Chapel services that we have left, and I am already feeling nostalgic about the ‘lasts’ that are approaching.

Year 12 Wade and Whitley enjoyed their respective last House Chapel Services last weekend. I attended the Wade House Chapel Service and watched the Year 12 girls tie on a ribbon to the Wade Tree which is a tradition that I have seen with previous Year groups, particularly when I was Head of House of Wade and our current Year group were in Year 6. It is quite something to think of Erica Chou, Elizabeth Giannacopoulos, Zaara Chalak, Taotao Jiang and Mahi Shah on the side of the pool for the 2017 MLC School Swimming Carnival while I was encouraging them all to swim in races and cheer for the older girls.

Final details for the 2023 Year 12 jerseys are being finalised this week. A special thanks to the Jersey Committee and in particular Athena Nikalopoulos, Zahli Harris, Claire van der Stel and Jana Edrees who have helped with this.

Unfortunately, only the individual and sibling photos went ahead on our Photo Day on Wednesday. House photos and our special Year 12 formal and muckup photos will occur later. Students will be informed of the date as soon as I know.

I wish all families the best of luck during the Year 12 Half Yearly examinations.

Year 12 IB Biology – Ecology Excursion

Last Thursday our Year 12 IB Biology students were super busy during their Ecology excursion. The girls headed to Long Reef in Collaroy early in the morning and spent the day learning how an Ecology field study works. They were using quadrats to count snails, starfishes, sea anemones and many other organisms to see how their abundance changes depending on temperature and salinity of water. Who said that Science is only done in a lab?! Our IB students had an awesome time and learnt that collecting data on the field is a major part of Ecology studies.

Important Procedures for Sport

Absences from Sport

What to Do When You Are Not Able to Make Training or a Game

On the rare occasions that it may be necessary for a player to miss training or a competition, please follow these instructions.

  • If the inability to attend is known in advance – a written explanation (email) from the player’s parent/guardian is to be given to the coach and sports department in advance. This notice should be given as early as possible.
  • If the player is absent from school on the day of training or on competition day – the player’s parent/guardian is asked to advise the coach and sports department of their child’s absence from training or the game.
  • Do not ask your friends or team mates to give your coach the message
  • Do give as much notice as possible
  • If there is a clash with another sport or school event, please speak with the Sports Department to determine which game/event you should attend.

Please Note: Continued failure to attend training or competitions without a timely written explanation is unacceptable and may jeopardise the player’s continued involvement in sport.

A member of the Sports Department will contact parents/guardians of students whose non-attendance at training or games is not notified in the correct manner.

Pockets are only awarded to students who have attended at least 80% of training and games.

Wet Weather

What do I do if it is Wet Weather?
While on most occasions we would not cancel training for wet weather, cancellations may occur if rain is too heavy to train in or weather conditions deem it unsafe. Additionally, due to safe distancing measures and government guidelines, we may be required to cancel training when we cannot accommodate students safely in an indoor space.

For morning training

The decision to cancel any morning training sessions will be made by 8pm the night before training.

Wet weather cancellations will be posted on the MLC School Sport Facebook Page, followed by an email.

No Facebook post, or email means that activities will still go ahead.

For after school training

The decision to cancel any after school training sessions will be made by 1pm on the day of training.

Wet weather cancellations will be posted on the MLC School Sport Facebook Page, followed by an email.

On Saturdays

If you are playing an IPSHA Sport, please use this link to take you to the IPSHA Wet Weather site.

Once on the site, select your venue and there will be a notification if your venue is closed. IPSHA normally make a decision by 7am.

If you are playing an IGSA Sport, visit https://igsasport.spawtz.com/. The IGSA website will let you know if your venue is closed or open.

When possible, we will also post the cancellations on our Sport Facebook Page.

On all occasions, it is the individuals’ responsibility to check the wet weather information. The Sports Department, coaches and managers are not always in a position to relay any game cancellations.

Year 3 and Year 4 Band Students Teach their Parents

Last Saturday we had our first ever Hit the Ground Running Day for Year 3 and Year 4 students playing a band instrument. The girls had a fabulous day of intensive music making and it was a fantastic opportunity to get a head start on their instrument (and enjoy a sausage sizzle)! The girls also had a lot of fun teaching their parents and carers how to play their instruments, who we think have a much better understanding of how hard our girls work now!

The fabulous trio responsible for this event were Richard Coward, Head of Bands, Elizabeth Gilberthorpe, Assistant Director of Music, and Sophie Grattan-Smith, Junior School Music Coordinator, with the help from some of our Music tutors.

The MLC School Environmental Group

The MLC School Environmental Group

With our wonderful Year 12 leaders having a gap-term to focus on their half yearly exams, the Environmental Group had our first meeting of its next era this Tuesday lunch gone.

There was plenty of positive discussion about ideas to further encourage recycling and energy efficiency at school. We also workshopped possible fundraising ideas, including ones to complement the Thrift Store the Year 12 students will come back next term to organise.

With that, please keep aside any clothing your family no longer needs. The highly acclaimed Thrift Store will run again late Term 2.

The MLC School Environmental Group meetings are on Tuesday Week B lunchtimes, in SCG06. Everyone is welcome.

DART Society is back!

We kicked off the term with our Thursday lunchtime club where we do all things art, design, and technology. With returning and brand-new students, we had one of our most exciting and popular sessions yet. With a focus on the individual, we are invested in encouraging students to explore their own uniqueness and individuality through our activities. Our first activity was to create a personalised key ring using clay that expressed student interests. Through this activity we saw a diverse array of themes including sports, foods, and favourite characters. Our next activities will include a Food Technology activity where we will decorate cookies and a textiles project involving hand sewing and tie dying. We hope to see you there!

Japanese Culture Society Week 4 Update

Last week at the Japanese Culture Society, we delved into how Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Japan!

In Japan, Valentine’s Day is traditionally celebrated by women giving chocolates or other sweets to men as a sign of affection rather than the exchange of gifts that is common in many other parts of the world. The types of chocolates given can vary depending on the relationship between the giver and recipient. The three main categories of chocolates given on Valentine’s Day are:

  1. Giri-choco (義理チョコ) – “obligation chocolate” or “courtesy chocolate” that is given to male colleagues, bosses, or acquaintances out of courtesy or obligation.
  2. Honmei-choco (本命チョコ) – “true feeling chocolate” or “favourite chocolate” that is given to boyfriends, husbands, or the person a woman is romantically interested in.
  3. Tomo-choco (友チョコ) – “friend chocolate” that is given to female friends as a sign of friendship.

Fun facts:

  • Some women make their own chocolates at home and decorate them with personalised messages and/or designs to make their gifts more special.
  • Additionally, in recent years, some men have started to reciprocate this act on 14 March, known as White Day, as they give gifts to the women whom they received chocolates from. This has led to a more reciprocal exchange of gifts and increased sales of chocolates and other gifts in Japan!

Speech and Drama Studio Week 4 News

All Speech and Drama Studio (SDS) programs are now well under way and there is a buzz of excitement in the air as the students are all thrilled to be back and flexing their creative muscle. Speech and Drama students are having fun learning improvisation and impromptu speaking skills this term. This body of work lays the foundation for performance, acting, characterisation and public speaking skills ahead.

Eisteddfod Preparation Begins

Many of our students will be representing MLC School at the Inner West Eisteddfod in May.

The Speech and Drama Studio is a proud supporter, sponsor and committee member of our local Eisteddfod and our students have competed for the past 26 years. Eisteddfods are a great opportunity for students to utilise the skills they are developing in class, increase confidence and most importantly to have fun performing. Students have commenced preparation of speeches, monologues, duologues, scenes, poems and prose readings. A number of our students in our Year 4 to Year 10 group Speech and Drama classes and Theatresports Club students  will be putting their amazing improv skills they are developing into practice in the IWE Improvisation Category.

Some students will also be representing MLC School at the Ryde, Parramatta, Penrith and Sydney Eisteddfods.
