From the Head of Junior School

It has been a very successful first term for 2026, thanks to the dedication of our talented staff and the commitment and support of our parents and carers. Our wonderful P&F have also worked tirelessly throughout the term, and I take this opportunity to thank them sincerely for all they do to support our school community.

Staffing News

As Term 1 concludes, I would like to thank our treasured Junior School Teacher Assistant, Deborah Doyle, better known as ‘Miss Debbie’, and our much‑loved teacher, Eddie Park, who are leaving us at the end of this term. We are grateful for the care, warmth and commitment Deb and Eddie have shown our girls, and we wish them both all the very best.

Cross Country

Congratulations to all the girls who participated in this week’s IPSHA Cross Country event at The King’s School. Many of the girls achieved personal best times, which is a wonderful achievement. Our sincere thanks go to our Sports and Facilities teams for their efforts in supporting our Junior School long‑distance runners and making the day such a success.

Pre-K to Year 5 Crazy Hair Day
Thank you parents for getting into the spirit supporting Crazy Hair Day. Please read the article from our Churunga House Patron, Bernadette Weston.

Easter Egg Drive
This initiative, led by our Junior School P&F, continues to be a meaningful opportunity for our girls to give back. While the Easter Bunny still visits our younger learners, eggs that would usually be received by students in Years 3 to 6 are instead donated to the Wayside Chapel and Exodus Foundation. Thank you to our girls for their generosity and compassion in supporting this worthy cause.

I would like to wish all girls an enjoyable holiday break. I hope each girl has the opportunity to relax, continue reading, and rejuvenate before returning refreshed and ready for all that Term 2 will bring. If your family is celebrating Easter, I wish you a very Happy Easter.

I look forward to welcoming the girls back in their full winter uniform when Term 2 commences for students on Tuesday 21 April 2026.

Churunga Crazy Hair Day

Churunga Crazy Hair Day

This week, Churunga’s Crazy Hair Day was a wonderful celebration of creativity, community, and kindness. Girls arrived at school with the most imaginative hairstyles – bright colours, wild shapes, glitter, ribbons, and everything in between. It was wonderful to see so many students and families embracing the fun while also understanding the important purpose behind the day.

More importantly, Crazy Hair Day gave our school community the opportunity to come together to support the Leukaemia Foundation. Through generous donations, we were able to raise funds to support children and families affected by blood cancer.

It was a great reminder that even small actions, like wearing a crazy hairstyle, can make a meaningful difference when we work together. Thank you to all our students, families, and staff for your enthusiasm and generosity in supporting Churunga’s Service Learning this term, and for showing that we truly are Stronger Together!

Easter Egg Hunt with Pre-Kindergarten

Easter Egg Hunt with Pre-Kindergarten

On Wednesday afternoon, our Pre-Kindergarten students were delighted by a truly magical Easter Egg Hunt, filled with wonder and excitement. The children were convinced that the Easter Bunny must have hopped in ever so quietly – perhaps through reception with a sprinkle of Easter magic – carefully hiding colourful eggs in all sorts of clever spots in our playground while no one was looking. With eyes wide and hearts full of anticipation, the children set off on their hunt, discovering each hidden treasure with squeals of joy and laughter. The experience captured the enchantment of Easter, sparking imagination, curiosity, and shared sense of celebration that made the day unforgettable for all.

Congratulations to Year 9 and Cadets

Year 9 students and Cadets have returned from their eagerly awaited camps, and the feedback has been very positive. The Year 9 cohort was divided between the Urban Challenge and Cadets programs, each offering unique experiences.

Those who participated in the Urban Challenge enjoyed a clue-based adventure, complete with creative team themes and a Duke of Edinburgh trek along Sydney’s coastline. The activity fostered teamwork, problem-solving and a sense of achievement among the students.

Meanwhile, Cadets embraced a full schedule of activities, including hiking, kayaking, and high ropes courses. Students spent nights in hoochies, and throughout the week they developed resilience, teamwork and leadership skills in a supportive environment.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all staff members involved for their planning and dedication. The camps proved to be challenging, memorable and highly rewarding for our Year 9 cohort and our Cadets.

Staffing news

Following my article about the MLC School Baby Boom and some exciting internal promotions, I have some news for this term:

In Term 2 we will welcome Lara Keeton, Head of HSIE, who is joining us from Oakhill College where she serves as Academic Head – HSIE: Business Studies, Economics and Commerce. Her tenure there has seen strong academic growth amongst her students as she has driven innovative and data informed practices to seek excellence in the classroom. Following my announcement of Andrew Taylor’s new role at St Augustine’s, Amanda Gruchot, who is well known to the students, has accepted a more substantial role and will join the PDHPE team. Lucy Pero, Visual Arts teacher and Jo Cilia, Head of Futures and Pathways, will also be on Long Service Leave next term.

Happy Easter to all

We wish you all a very happy and safe holiday break and hope you manage to rest, enjoying some family time!

Round Square Term 1 Review: Dialogue, Leadership and Global Connection

Round Square Term 1 Review: Dialogue, Leadership and Global Connection

This term has been an important one for the IDEALS Society, as students engage deeply with the values that shape our school’s Round Square identity. Under the guidance of our Round Square & Community Captain, Emily Wu (Year 12), and the support of Mr Henry Wijanto (Round Square Coordinator) the Baraza Groups have continued to develop as thoughtful and purposeful forums for discussion. The Baraza model, drawn from East African tradition, centres on open dialogue, shared responsibility, and collective understanding. Bringing this practice into our school, has fostered an environment where students can explore complex issues with maturity and respect.

Throughout Term 1, our Baraza conversations have been both wide-ranging and grounded in real world relevance. We examined the Social Media Delay and how it is affecting students, as well as what responsible online citizenship looks like for young people today. We discussed the gender pay gap, not only in sport but across a range of industries and reflected on the structural inequalities that continue to shape opportunity. We explored the pink tax and the ways in which everyday consumer habits can reinforce gender expectations. And finally, we analysed this year’s “political Super Bowl”, looking at how political spectacle, media influence and public engagement intersect modern democracies. These discussions challenged us to think critically, articulate our ideas clearly, and listen with intention.

The skills developed in Baraza groups proved invaluable when participating in the Round Square Postcard discussions, notably MLC School’s own International Women’s Day Postcard.

Postcards bring together students from around the globe, for short, focused conversations on global themes, and stepping into that international space can feel daunting. Yet the habits we had built, including active listening, respectful debate and the ability to connect personal experiences to broader global contexts, meant we were well prepared. Engaging with students from different cultural backgrounds broadened our perspectives and reminded us of the shared values that underpin the Round Square network.

As we look ahead to Term 2, there is a strong sense of purpose and anticipation. Planning for Round Square Week, in Week 10, is already underway, with students working to design activities that will bring the IDEALS values to life across the school. The aim is to create a week that is engaging, reflective, and genuinely student led, offering opportunities for the wider school community to participate meaningfully.

Work will also continue the IDEALS mural, designed by Visual Arts Captain Maxine Hawkins (Year 12) and Kushla McCaul (Year 12) in late 2025, a project that will become a visual expression of our commitment to global citizenship. The mural represents not only artistic collaboration but also the collective identity of the IDEALS Society. Watching it develop has been a reminder that the values we discuss are not abstract; they are something we build together, piece by piece.

One of the most significant undertakings of the coming term will be preparing to host a tour for visitors from Brookhouse School, (Nairobi) who are sending a delegation to the annual Round Square Conference at Barker College. This is a major event in the Round Square calendar, and students are already stepping into leadership roles to support planning, logistics, and the overall vision for a pre-conference tour. Hosting delegates from across the world is both a responsibility and an opportunity, a chance to showcase our school’s commitment to the IDEALS and to strengthen our connections within the global Round Square community.

Reflecting on the term, the IDEALS Society has continued to grow not only in numbers but in depth of engagement. The Baraza Groups have helped us develop the confidence to speak, the discipline to listen, and the curiosity to question. The Postcard discussions have shown us the value of international dialogue and the importance of approaching global issues with openness and humility. And the work ahead in Term 2 promises to translate these conversations into action.

With the leadership of Emily Wu and Mr Wijanto, and the enthusiasm of all involved, the IDEALS Society enters the new term with momentum and a shared sense of purpose. As we move into Term 2, there is a shared belief that our continued collaboration will strengthen the IDEALS community and leave a lasting contribution to our school.

French Film Festival

French Film Festival

On Tuesday afternoon the Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12 French classes went to watch ‘A Nun in the City’ as a part of the French Film Festival. The movie was about a nun who escaped a convent to find her childhood sweetheart. We really enjoyed the movie, and found the experience to be immersive. We were surprised with how much we could understand and also picked up some new vocabulary and phrases. We are looking forward to going again in the future!

Year 7

Year 7

This week, we asked Year 7 to reflect on their first term of Senior School and the things that helped them to feel connected to our school community.

Some highlights:

          • Nearly all students said that they felt a sense of belonging at MLC School
          • Spending time with their Year 11 Big Sisters and Year 10 Peers Support Mentors were the two activities that made Year 7 most connected to the MLC School community.
          • Nearly all students said that they had a positive and supportive relationship with at least one staff member at MLC School
          • Many students said they were proud of how they had made new friends, learnt to stay organised and complete their first assessment tasks, and trying their best.

I’d love to share with you some of the Year 7 reflections below about what they most enjoyed about the Luminary program this term:

  • I have enjoyed meeting new people which made me feel like I have a place in this school and that I belong here
  • I enjoyed meeting with my Year 11 Big Sister, who was really kind, encouraging and supportive.
  • I have most enjoyed organising and completing activities with Year 10 Peer Support Mentors and my Year 11 Big Sister, as we get to interact and meet with people from different year groups as well as creating stronger connections throughout the school community
  • I enjoyed activities in Luminary where we discussed how our week was going and when we shared our strategies for how to be organised and complete homework.
  • I enjoyed activities such as creating the ‘hexagonal connections map’ with my Luminary as it helped me see the things I have in common with other students and make new friends and connections.

Heart Points

Last Friday, we also celebrated Year 7 students who were awarded 5 Heart Points this term for demonstrating our MLC School Values. Congratulations to the following Year 7 students Amy Hunter, Grace Ingram, Jesselle Jiao, Arielle McBrien, Emily Moore, Louise Morgant, Chelsea Shrestha and Kathy Zhang!

Year 8

Year 8

Well done to all Year 8 students and families on a successful Term 1. I have been very proud of the academic efforts of Year 8 this term, with many of the students really focusing on improving their study habits from Year 7. Year 8 have also shown great growth in their leadership, confidence and support of one another. This week, Year 8 ended the term with a fun Easter celebration with their Big Sisters, and Barazza groups talking about Earth Hour run by the Environment Club.

Next term, we will enjoy Week 1 with the House Swimming Carnival on the Wednesday (get your costumes, swimming and themed) ready! There is also cross-country trials, an ANZAC Day public holiday and celebration, and Year 8 will begin preparation for their Immersion Camp. Don’t forget to have perfect winter uniform from day 1! Drop those hems down over the break please and make sure blazers are ready to be worn each and every day. Details about the winter uniform requirements can be found on page 67 of the Parent Information Handbook.

Have a safe and happy Easter break, thank you for the support this term and I look forward seeing you all back at the end of April.

Year 8 French

Year 8 French

This term, the Year 8 French classes have been learning about French festivals and how they are celebrated. This week we have been exploring both Easter traditions and the celebration of Poisson d’avril, which is also known as April Fool’s Day. We have learnt about the traditions and culture of these holidays, and loved the Poisson d’avril tradition sticking paper fish on each other’s backs.

Year 10

Year 10

It’s been a great week as Year 10 are looking forward to the holidays. It’s time for a rest and relaxation with family and friends after a busy term. There are end of term rituals at MLC School that signal the end of term – communion with Rev Vinnie, Luminary celebrations and co-curricular awards nights to celebrate the achievements of the season. The Cadet camp has been a great success, and we look forward to hearing about it next term. The Year 10 Mock Trial team fought a winning case as part of their competition. Year 10 this week learned about the importance of academic honesty and registered their details with NESA. The details about work experience have been shared with the girls and through email with parents, and more information including the presentation can be accessed on Omnia. If you have any further questions about the work experience program, please contact Nicole Massara in the Careers department.

A letter regarding the Year 10 Immersion Program was also shared with the girls and parents. You can access the letter on the Year 10 page on Omnia.

When the girls return in Term 2, they will need to wear winter uniform. Remember to take a look at skirt lengths and ensure blazers are ready to be worn each day. Details about the winter uniform are available in the Parent Information Handbook.

On behalf of the Year 10 Luminary team, we wish the Year 10 community a Happy Easter and restful holiday break. Term 2 begins with all students returning at 8.15am on Tuesday 21 April 2026.

Head of Year 10

Year 11

Year 11

As we come to the end of Term 1, Year 11 are now officially one third of the way through their Preliminary HSC course and Diploma Program Year 1, which is hard to believe. I have been very impressed with the way they have approached this first term of their senior studies. I have seen them grow in maturity, independence and motivation as learners, and it has been pleasing to watch them rise to the increased expectations of senior school.

In this final part of the term, Year 11 have begun receiving assessment results. It is completely normal for them to experience an emotional response when tasks are returned, particularly when they have invested significant effort and the stakes feel higher. At this stage of the learning journey, it is important that the focus remains on feedback rather than the mark itself. Learning in the senior years is not a smooth, linear process, and setbacks or disappointments are a natural and valuable part of growth.

We see the greatest progress when students actively engage with feedback, apply it to future tasks, and continue to practise and refine the skills that need further development. As your daughter comes home with assessment results, I encourage you to move beyond simply asking about the mark. Instead, consider asking: What did you do well? What feedback were you given? What will you do differently next time, and how will you do it? These conversations help reinforce a growth mindset and keep learning at the centre.

I hope that you and your daughters can take some time over the break to rest, recharge and enjoy the Easter period. I look forward to welcoming Year 11 back for Term 2.

Uniform reminder for Term 2

All students will return in winter uniform next term. Please see below some reminders regarding uniform:

  • Either long navy socks or black opaque tights are to be worn (sheer tights are for formal occasions only).
  • On the way to and from school, blazers must be worn. Jumpers, cardigans or vests should be worn under the blazer if additional warmth is needed.
  • Long‑sleeve thermals, or thermals that sit lower than the neckline, are not permitted.
  • Pants and the duffel coat may be worn during Term 2 and Term 3.
  • Please check skirt length before returning in Term 2.
  • Piercings: please do not allow your daughter to get any new non‑uniform piercings over the holidays, as they will be asked to remove them next term.

Details about the winter uniform requirements can be found on page 67 of the Parent Information Handbook.

Year 12

Year 12

One term down, two terms to go for Year 12! What an exciting milestone to celebrate after a mammoth ten week term.

This week Year 12 returned to lessons after their examination block and returned with enthusiasm for the final four days of school. With many from the cohort beginning to receive feedback on their recent assessments, students were able to kickstart the all-important reflection process, where they consider their academic engagement this term and make clear plans for the break as well as the term ahead.

During Luminary on Monday, Year 12 had the opportunity to complete some ‘land’ practice for the synchro performances and check in their Luminaries after two weeks away from school. On Tuesday Year 12 leaders supported Reverend Vinnie by assisting to lead the Year 6 to Year 12 Communion Service. It was also an opportunity to farewell Deputy Head of Senior School – Wellbeing, Andrew Taylor and thank him for all his experience and time in creating and sustaining a range of wellbeing initiatives in the Senior School. On Wednesday, Eri Takeshita (Environment Captain) took over our Year Meeting to help recognise Earth Hour at MLC School. Eri asked all of Year 12 to make an environmental pledge about one small commitment they can each make to help the environment. To round out the week, Year 12 spent time celebrating Easter with their Little Sisters – a fun, colourful and yummy experience for all!

I want to take the opportunity to thank all of the Year 12 Luminaries for all their support of Year 12 (and me) this term. Year 12 are incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful team of people supporting them through this final year of school!

I trust all of Year 12 and their families will have a wonderful Easter break and can all take the time to have some down time together. See you all back for Day 1 of Term 2 on Tuesday 21 April, in winter uniform! Details about the winter uniform requirements can be found on page 67 of the Parent Information Handbook.

Private Music Tuition – Rotating timetable

Private Music Tuition – Rotating timetable

The vibrant and high quality music program at MLC School, showcased through outstanding performances and a wide range of ensembles, is driven by dedicated peripatetic music tutors, who provide expert tuition that nurtures talent and fosters a passion for music.

MLC School engages some of Sydney’s finest musicians as private music tutors. The tutors tailor lessons for each individual and are dedicated to the goals of the student as well as our department. Having your daughter learn an instrument or voice with an MLC School music tutor gives you peace of mind about the quality of guidance they are receiving, and is a decided advantage when approaching senior curriculum music as they are in regular consultation with the classroom teacher.

The School supports a process where students are able to come out of class on a rotational basis for lessons. This allows the convenience of having music lessons during the school day while minimising the impact on curriculum lessons. In the senior school, there is a week A and week B rotating timetable as well as the tutor rotating lessons to minimise impact.

We do have some exceptions to rotation. Parents may request a fixed lesson time when their daughter reaches Year 11 and Year 12; if they are undertaking two lessons at school (one may be a fixed), or in cases of special needs.

Recently, several tutors have reported pressure from families to fix lessons outside the above mentioned circumstances. I am sure you understand, we must maintain a process that is fair for everyone. Please refrain from asking tutors to accommodate your daughter at a fixed time. It is uncomfortable for them to be placed in the position of having to deny the request.

I am always here to help if you feel there is special circumstances surrounding this issue. The easiest way to contact me is via email at tmee@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au. If you provide your phone number, I will find an agreeable time to talk through your situation.

Junior School Taiko: Starting the Year in Rhythm

Junior School Taiko: Starting the Year in Rhythm

Our Junior School Taiko classes have had an energetic start to the year with Taiko drumming quickly becoming a highlight on Tuesday afternoons. For many students, Taiko is a new experience. Taiko is a traditional form of Japanese ensemble drumming known for its powerful rhythms, strong sense of timing, and emphasis on group performance. Students are learning not only how to play, but how to listen and keep in time with others. More excitingly, it has also been a great way to bring students together. Playing side by side encourages teamwork, and it has been lovely to see friendships forming within classes and across year levels. Over the course of this term their confidence has grown and so has their sound!

Taiko in the Community

A special concert taking place during the Term 1 school holidays is CATHARSIS performed by our Taikoz teachers, held on 17–18 April at the NIDA Playhouse in Kensington. It is a great opportunity for students to see where Taiko can take them, making it a meaningful way to connect what they are learning at school with performance beyond the classroom. For ticket purchase details and more information please visit https://www.taikoz.com/whats-on/catharsis-taikoz-at-nida-playhouse.

Throughout this year we are celebrating our anniversary of 140 years of excellence in girls’ education. As we close out Term 1, I would like to acknowledge MLC School’s exceptional teachers and support and operational staff (both current and past). Behind every improvement, new initiative, phone call, email, and assessment is an enormous amount of unseen work; much of it through the discretionary effort of our staff who are so committed to making MLC School the best that it can possibly be.

Already this year we have:

  • Completely reinvigorated our sports program
  • Founded the largest all girl cadet unit in Australia
  • Introduced a new, research-based approach to teacher professional learning
  • Undertaken our annual deep dive into academic performance of the Class of 2025 (always seeking to identify where further improvement can be found)
  • Introduced our Junior School academic advantage sessions for parents
  • Behind the scenes, we have become the first Australian independent school to implement Security Copilot to improve our IT security and data and information protection
  • Made further progress on our Capital improvement plans and
  • Are working closely with the P&F Executive and OGU to build further opportunities for community connection.

There is much to celebrate.

Thank you to those community members who have written, called or otherwise taken the time to acknowledge the ‘going above and beyond’ efforts of our staff and to those who have taken the time to attend our Information Sessions, Coffee with the Principal, Community Prayer Breakfast or P&F and OGU meetings and events. Along with incidental conversations with school leaders on the sporting sidelines or while attending the various co-curricular and out of hours activities, your attendance and input at these gatherings provide us with invaluable feedback and insights which are carefully considered and discussed.

Term 2 will provide further opportunities for community connection and education, including:

Cafe/Canteen Price Rise for Term 2

Cafe/Canteen Price Rise for Term 2

In response to the increasing fuel prices, Catercare has advised that there has already been significant impact on the cost of food items offered in the Cafe and Canteen.

From the start of Term 2, prices for hot lunches will rise by $1, and coffee will increase by .50c. There will be minor price rises applied to various other items sold through the Cafe/Canteen.

Chaplain’s Corner

Chaplain’s Corner

This term has been marked by vibrant spiritual engagement, meaningful connections, and a strong sense of community across our school. The ‘Spirit Strong 2026 On’ theme, woven throughout 10 House Services, encouraged each House to explore its unique sub-theme, such as: “Adventure, Leaping into Action, Leadership, Community, and Unity” (to name a few). These services provided opportunities for students to reflect, participate, and grow together, fostering an environment where everyone felt valued and uplifted.

We also had the opportunity to farewell our Year 12 students during their various House services. These gatherings were significant, as they marked the final House service for each student in their last year. The occasion provided a meaningful moment to acknowledge their journey and celebrate their contributions to the school community.

Weekly chapel services remained a cornerstone of our school faith life. The lighting of candles during the six weeks of Lent offered a visual and spiritual reminder of hope and renewal… and created space for contemplation in the busy school week. Students and staff embraced these moments, deepening their understanding of the significance of Lent, and its message of reflection and compassion.

Harmony Week was a highlight, with our special service celebrating the theme “Everyone Belongs.” The event brought our diverse community together, affirming our commitment to inclusivity and respect. Through shared stories, music, and prayer, we acknowledged the richness that each individual brings to our school and reaffirmed the importance of unity.

Last Tuesday, our Year 9 Chapel service welcomed a group of 20 students from Japan. The occasion provided a wonderful opportunity for cultural exchange and shared experiences.

As we conclude Term 1, I am grateful for the enthusiasm and spirit shown by our students, staff, and families. Our journey has been one of growth, togetherness, and spiritual discovery. I look forward to building on these foundations in the coming term, continuing to nurture a school environment where faith, belonging, and compassion thrive.

As we now approach Easter, we are reminded of its powerful message of resurrection, hope, and new beginnings. Easter encourages us to embrace renewal in our own lives and to carry forward the spirit of joy, generosity, and forgiveness. May the lessons and celebrations of this term inspire us to welcome the promise of Easter with open hearts, continuing to build a community where every person is uplifted and cherished!

  • Year 7 to Year 12 Study Hub+ – please click here to read further and to access the nomination form.

These operate 3.30pm–6pm Monday to Thursday during term time (please note they run till Wednesday only next week).

Year 11 and Year 12 After-Hours Study Hub

Recognising the importance of a conducive environment for focused study, MLC School has established a free after-hours Study Hub exclusively for our Year 11 and Year 12 students. Located on Level 3 of the Senior Centre, the Study Hub provides a quiet and supportive space where students can concentrate on their studies, complete assessments, and prepare for examinations under the supervision of experienced MLC School staff across many subject areas.

Key Features:

  • Experienced staff: Two teachers rostered each evening from different subject areas, to guide and assist students with their academic queries and provide valuable feedback.
  • Convenient location: Level 3 of the Senior Centre, providing easy access for Senior students.
  • Flexible hours: The study hub is open Monday to Thursday 3.30pm–6pm, allowing students to make the best use of their time outside regular school hours. Partial attendance is welcome.

We encourage all Year 11 and Year 12 students to take advantage of this excellent resource to enhance their learning experience and achieve their academic goals. The staff roster will be published in advance of each week in Audacia, the School newsletter. Students will be required to sign in on arrival to Study Hub and sign out on departure, as part of our student welfare management system.

There is no need to register for this program.

Study Hub+

Study Hub+

Term 2 2026 Study Hub+  – Fill in form

Study Hub+ is MLC School’s structured, pay‑per‑use after‑school study support program, designed for students in Year 7 to Year 12 who would benefit from more personalised academic guidance in a focused and supportive environment.

While the Study Hub provides a supervised space for independent study for Year 11 and Year 12, Study Hub+ offers a higher level of individualised, responsive support. Sessions are student‑led, allowing mentors to tailor assistance based on each student’s specific needs on the day. This may include consolidating class learning, clarifying assessment requirements, preparing for examinations, or developing effective and sustainable study routines.

Led by Program Coordinator Ela Huber, Study Hub+ is supported by a team of knowledgeable mentors, all of whom are pre‑service teachers or working towards a career in education. Most mentors are in the final stages of their undergraduate or Master of Teaching degrees and bring with them a strong depth of subject knowledge, alongside up‑to‑date, innovative and curriculum‑aligned resources. This ensures students receive guidance that is relevant and closely aligned with classroom expectations.

A key strength of Study Hub+ is the opportunity for students to work alongside a mentor, particularly when engaging with written tasks. Mentors can read through work with students, ask guiding questions, suggest improvements to structure, clarity and expression, and help students refine their ideas and arguments. While mentors are unable to mark work or provide grades, they can offer valuable feedback and editing support prior to submission, helping students better understand how to improve their work independently.

Mentors can support students with:

  • Revising and consolidating key concepts and class content
  • Examination preparation and revision strategies
  • Planning and organising assessments and study schedules
  • Reading through drafts alongside students and suggesting edits or refinements
  • Developing confidence, independence and effective study habits

Study Hub+ also plays an important role in supporting students in an era where AI is a valuable and encouraged tool at MLC School, but one that requires thoughtful, ethical and informed use. Students can sometimes over‑rely on AI when completing homework and assessments, which may leave them unsure about underlying concepts, task expectations or how to improve their own work.

At Study Hub+, mentors help reinforce the appropriate and ethical use of AI by guiding students to use these tools as a support for learning rather than a replacement for thinking. Mentors work with students to unpack questions, clarify concepts, check understanding and refine ideas, ensuring students remain actively engaged in their learning and confident in the work they submit.

Program Overview

  • Schedule: Monday to Thursday, 3.30pm–6pm (term time)
  • Location: Level 1, Senior Centre
  • Cost: $25 per session (2.5 hours) and charged to your daughter’s account at the end of term
  • Environment: Phone‑free zone to minimise distractions and promote positive study habits
  • Staffing: A minimum of two mentors per session, rotating to provide a range of subject expertise

Families are encouraged to register on a termly basis to support the development of consistent study routines, although weekly bookings remain available via Omnia and Audacia, the School e-newsletter. Students will receive a reminder email at approximately 2pm on their scheduled day confirming their session and assigned room.

Cancellation Policy

If your daughter is unable to attend a scheduled session, please provide at least 24 hours’ notice to avoid being charged. In cases of illness where your daughter is absent from school, families will not be charged.

Sporting Achievements

Sporting Achievements

Last week, nine of our Senior students travelled to Tasmania to compete in the Australian Rowing Championships. Across four days of racing, the team battled strong winds and challenging conditions, yet their determination and positive spirit never wavered.

Our School Girl Doubles crews – Jemima Blake (Year 11) and Nicola Keast (Year 11), Ella Hu (Year 12) and Clementine Hendriks (Year 12) – raced strongly in their heats, placing 5th and 4th respectively. Later in the regatta, Jemima and Nicola went on to win the C Final, while Ella and Clementine secured 7th place in the B Final.

On Friday, our School Girl Quad of Sophie Winnall (Year 12), Eve Parker (Year 12), Rebecca Beaton (Year 12), Eliza Kershaw McDonald (Year 12) and Alannah Ng (Year 8) won their heat, progressing confidently into Saturday’s semi‑final where they placed 3rd, earning a well‑deserved spot in Sunday’s A Final. The crew finished 7th in the country – an outstanding achievement at this level of competition.

The entire coaching team are incredibly proud of the students who represented MLC School in Tasmania. Each student carried themselves with maturity, resilience and sportsmanship throughout the event, and they should be very proud of their efforts. Congratulations!

A great week out for MLC School Touch Football. Across 7 teams, we made one Grand Final and three Play-off games. I am proud to say that all four of these games finished with MLC on top! 4 out of 4 wins on a cold, yet sunny Saturday was a fantastic way to finish the term, so a huge congratulations to all involved in the program. Everyone else, we’ll see you back on the pitch in term 4!

The biggest well-done of all however, to MLC03 – Coached by their fearless leader: Sam Harianto. They went away to Monte at 8am on the other side of the world (Macquarie Uni) and were clinical in a 3-1 win to bring home the premiership!

First Model UN Conference for 2026 a great success

First Model UN Conference for 2026 a great success

This year one of our new focus areas for co-curricular is developing our skills and participation in Model UN (MUN) events and activities. In Term 1 we started our after-school Model UN Junior (Year 7 and Year 8) and Senior (Year 9 to Year 11) classes.  Our two coaches are experts at participating in UN events and have been keen to pass on their knowledge to students.  When the opportunity arose to attend our first conference of the year at Our Lady of Mercy College, Parramatta we had many students eager to take part. See below for a report on the event from a coach and a student viewpoint.

From the Coaches perspective:

Last Saturday, 16 of our students from Year 7 to Year 10 represented MLC School at the OLMC Interschool Model United Nations conference, joining approximately 200 delegates from schools across the Sydney region in a day of rigorous debate, diplomacy, and global thinking. Across four committees, our students tackled some of the most pressing and complex issues on the world stage – from the proliferation of illicit small arms and weaponry to the emerging arms race in space, the ethical frontiers of neurotechnology, and the challenges of international debt. For many of our delegates, this was their very first MUN experience, and they rose to the occasion with remarkable confidence – negotiating passionately with other countries and delivering compelling speeches to the chamber, with many successfully passing amendments for each resolution paper. We are incredibly proud to share that our school achieved the highest award representation at the conference. Congratulations to our award recipients:

  • Best Speaker (UNSC): Katherine Woo (Year 10)
  • Best Speaker (ECOSOC): Clare Wei (Year 9)
  • Best Delegation (DISEC): Jiwan Park and Carreen Zhang (Year 10)
  • Best Delegation (UNHRC): Abira Sanan and Ashwini Kanesalingam (Year 8)

A remarkable result all round – we look forward to seeing what future conferences bring.

From the delegate perspective:

The OLMC MUN conference was a truly memorable experience, especially as it was my first MUN conference in Australia. It provided a valuable opportunity to learn about current global issues, such as preventing arms races and regulating illicit weapons, and gain insight into the perspectives of member states through both prior research and interactions with students from various schools. Compared to my previous MUN experiences in Singapore and India, this conference felt more collaborative and engaging, as I worked with a partner and we were able to share ideas and support each other throughout the debates. Carreen and I were proud to receive Best Delegation together, and this pleasant surprise at the end of the day made the experience even more rewarding. Overall, the conference had a fun and relaxed atmosphere that encouraged delegates, including myself, to actively participate, contribute and genuinely enjoy the process of amending and passing resolutions.

Happy Children’s Day!

Happy Children’s Day!

In preparation for Children’s Day in Japan, on 5 May, a joyful occasion that honours the happiness and growth of children, members of the Japanese Culture Society, students learning Japanese, and other eager volunteers have been participating in an ongoing project. They have been working together over several weeks to folding origami kabuto (samurai battle helmets). Hundreds of individual origami have been joined together to create koinobori, (colourful carp streamers) that are a familiar sight across Japan during Children’s Day.

These vibrant carp streamers are hung outside homes and schools to symbolise strength, courage, and good fortune for children as they grow. Carp are admired for strength and determination in Japanese culture, while the origami helmets represent bravery and protection. Traditional treats such as kashiwa mochi (sweet rice cakes wrapped in oak leaves) and chimaki (sticky rice dumplings in bamboo leaves) are also enjoyed during this time.

Thank you to all the wonderful students who helped create this beautiful artwork. We hope it brings happiness to your day! Kodomo no hi omedetou! (Happy Children’s Day!)
