Newsletter | Term 1 | Week 1 2026 - 30 January 2026

From the Principal

A very warm welcome to 2026 – I’ve truly enjoyed seeing the joy and excitement on students’ faces as they entered both the Senior School gates and walked the red carpet at the Junior School.

This year, MLC School celebrates an impressive milestone: its 140th anniversary, highlighting our long-standing commitment to excellence in girls’ education. Throughout the year, there will be many chances to take part in these festivities, so please watch out for event invitations.

On Friday 6 February 2026, we will host our first parent social event for the year, the Principal’s Welcome Evening. This is an informal opportunity for parents to meet each other and many of our staff. I look forward to seeing you there. Kindly note that students do not attend this event.
Please RSVP here.

Class of 2025 Academic Results

No doubt you have seen the communication and social media posts regarding the outstanding academic results achieved by the class of 2025. The highest ATAR achieved was 99.95, with more than half the cohort achieving above 90. Our IB students excelled, including three students who achieved a perfect 45 and five who achieved 44. Equally impressive were the achievements of our HSC candidates; we celebrated a First in state placement, All‑Round Achievers, and numerous Showcase selections and even more Showcase nominations. Perhaps less visible but equally worthy of celebration are those girls who achieved well beyond what was predicted because of their hard work, and the outstanding support and expertise of their teachers who worked beside them to cultivate this growth.

Behind every result is a girl who has grown in confidence, responsibility and purpose; and a team of teachers, mentors and school leaders who have worked tirelessly to support her. Particular thanks are due to Head of Learning and Teaching Melissa McMahon, Head of Senior School Joanna Graffen, Deputy Principal Melissa Boyd, Head of Students Year 10 to Year 12 Fiona Pow, Head of Year 12 Sharon Connolly, Year 12 teachers and the academic and pastoral leadership teams who were relentless in their efforts to ensure that the girls were expertly taught, challenged, followed up and cared for during their final year.

Staff

A very warm welcome to our new staff and congratulations to those returning staff who have earned promotions to leadership roles. In their newsletter articles, Joanna Graffen, Head of Senior School, and Daniel Sandral, Head of Junior School, have included information about the new staff in their parts of the school.

It is my pleasure to announce that Luisa Bland has taken up the role of Chaplain Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12, working closely with Rev Vinnie to guide the Spiritual life of the School. Luisa is well known to many of our girls and their families because of her time teaching in the HSIE department. Luisa has great passion and experience in building the links between service-learning and the spiritual life of schools and we look forward to working with Pastor Luisa in her new role.

Traffic and Safety

Please take great care and follow all road rules and School car park processes when driving in and around the School area. Careful driving not only protects our students and staff but also helps maintain a calm and orderly environment for our neighbours during busy drop-off and pick-up times.

In particular, Junior School parents are reminded that Park Road is not to be used for pick up or drop off. In the past we have experienced a child being struck by a car and numerous ‘near misses’ as a result of parents not following this directive. The couple of minutes that you might save are simply not worth the risk.

Farewell and Thank You to Susan Rowley

After a most enjoyable period of Long Service Leave at the end of 2025, Susan has decided that it is time to step back from the demands of her leadership and teaching position at MLC School to pursue improved work life balance and take up other opportunities to utilise her passion for teacher education and expertise as an educator.

As well as being a long serving staff member, Susan is an MLC School Old Girl and was a Prefect and a member of the Student Council during her time as a student.

First commencing as a staff member at MLC School in January 1988, Susan was a Science teacher for 16 years while also becoming a mum to Emily Church (2007) and Stephanie Church (2009) in the early 1990s.

In January 2004, Susan became the Head of Science at St George Christian School where she remained for five years. During this time Susan introduced project-based learning to her Science students to encourage creative thinking.

We were fortunate to welcome Susan back to MLC School in 2009 as our Head of Science. In this role she led her team of staff to focus on enhancing each girls’ confidence and competence in learning Science. At the same time Susan also taught HSC Chemistry, HSC Extension Science, and IB Chemistry.

After 13 years, Susan moved into a new role at MLC School as the Director of Teacher Accreditation. She has held this role for four years with distinction, overseeing the accreditation process for all the teaching staff at the School and working closely with our university partners.

Susan was an active member of the Old Girls’ Union for many years, mainly in executive roles. She also served for a time as the OGU representative on the MLC School Council.

We thank Susan for her remarkable contribution to MLC School and the positive impact that she has had on so many students and staff over her time with us. We wish her all the very best for the next phase of life and look forward to her continued connection with the school through the OGU.

Episode 7 – Inspiring Journeys of Alumni Award Winners – Dr Jan Milburn

In this episode of ‘Dare to Be More’, host Anthony Perl speaks with Dr Jan Milburn OAM, whose remarkable journey from MLC School student in the 1950s to award-winning educator and principal demonstrates the transformative power of exceptional education.

Jan shares her memories of MLC School during an era when most teachers were single women dedicated to their vocation, and when the School was one of the first girls’ schools to offer physics and chemistry. She describes how the depth of learning and strong values she experienced at MLC School opened up horizons that would shape her entire life, from her PhD studies in London to her career as a teacher, principal, and education consultant.

Episode 5 – The Power of Music in Education: Building Confidence Through Music at MLC School

Trevor Mee, Director of Music at MLC School, speaks about the School’s exceptional music program and the profound impact music education has on young women’s development.

Trevor shares his journey from the Queensland Conservatorium to teaching at Newington College and ultimately to MLC School, explaining how his passion for group music-making and the social aspects of music led him to education. He describes the fascinating differences between boys’ and girls’ schools, noting how girls often need encouragement to step forward but produce incredibly fine work once they do.

The conversation explores MLC School’s comprehensive music program, which begins in Pre-Kindergarten and continues through Year 12. Trevor explains the compulsory string program in Years 1 and 2, the introduction of band instruments in Year 3, and the diverse range of ensembles including string orchestras, symphony orchestras, jazz bands, choirs, and rock programs. He describes how MLC School has built on its reputation as one of the finest classical music schools in the country whilst expanding to offer equally strong contemporary and jazz programs.   Listen here

She explains how her role supports both students and teachers, ensuring a clear vision for teaching and learning whilst providing responsive support for teacher wellbeing and professional growth.

The conversation explores how learning today differs from previous generations, with Amy highlighting the increased agency, voice, and choice that students now have in their learning. She discusses the focus on developing dispositions and soft skills – self-awareness, self-regulation, resilience, and collaboration – alongside content knowledge, preparing students to apply learning to any context in the world.  Listen here

Chaplain’s Corner – Beginning a New Year Together

Chaplain’s Corner – Beginning a New Year Together

As we commence the new year, standing at the School gate welcoming our girls to school was an exhilarating experience as I witnessed the hugs, laughter, joyful expressions, and excitement…even for our new students! The energy at the start of a new academic year is truly infectious and watching the students arrive, each with their own hopes and dreams, reminds us of the privilege and responsibility we have in shaping their journey ahead.

It reminds me of the first four lines of our school song:

Here in this house where we are singing thus
Long generations will come after us;
Friends we have never known will come to share
This life of ours, wondering what we were.

These lines beautifully capture the enduring legacy of our School. We are part of a continuum, building on the foundations laid by those before us and preparing the way for those who will follow. Our actions, traditions, and spirit shape the experiences of future generations; and as we welcome new faces and continue cherished customs, we are reminded that our community is ever-growing, connected by shared values and the pursuit of excellence.

As we celebrate the 140 year anniversary in 2026, it is my prayers that we’ll embrace this new year with open hearts, mindful of our role in this ongoing story. Together, we will create memories, overcome challenges, and celebrate achievements – leaving a mark for generations yet to come.

God bless you all!

Reminders from the Health Centre

Reminders from the Health Centre

The Health Centre would like to mention a few things to keep in mind for 2026.

Illnesses are always going to be circulating in the community. Currently in NSW, Influenza A and B are prevalent in the community. We please ask that you remain vigilant and if your daughter is unwell, please keep her home and resting. Health and Wellbeing are paramount and the key ingredient to academic success. This website has a great reference guide on when to stay home from school.

If you are ever in doubt, please call the Health Centre on (02) 8741 3134.

As a general rule of thumb, students should not attend school unless they have cleared 24 hours of symptoms such as:

  • Fever
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting

This also includes no use of medications that may mask symptoms in the 24-hour time frame.

Medications

  • If your daughter takes a regular prescribed medication (eg: ADHD, Anti-Anxiety or Antidepressants) please update the Health Centre. No student should be carrying prescribed medication on their person unless it is an essential Critical Emergency medication such as an Adrenaline injector (Epipen)/Asthma Puffer.
  • If medications need to be taken by your daughter during school hours (8am–3.30pm), please adhere to the following:
  1. Provide a letter from the prescribing doctor, detailing the medication and dose.
  2. Provide the medication in its original labelled packaging (box or bottle).
  3. Fill out the Medication Authority form.
  • If your daughter takes a regular medication, we strongly encourage you to update the School as there are certain medications that are contraindicated or have side effects, so this best helps us to support your daughter if she were to present to the Health Centre.
  • If your daughter takes a regular prescribed medication and there is a camp, all S4/S8 medications are to be brought in the week prior to the camp departure date in a Webster Pack. This is supplied by your pharmacy and usually requires >48 hours notice.

Updating Medical Details

If there has been a change in your daughter’s medical history, please update the Health Centre via your Omnia dashboard/my students. scroll down to Key Information/Medical Information/View-Edit. This is an imperative process for MLC School to maintain safety both onsite and offsite. We strongly encourage this be completed at time of diagnosis or yearly if a general update.

As always, if any queries please contact the Health Centre on (02) 8741 3134 or mlcnurse@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au.

Risk Warning (Under Section 5M of Civil Liability Act 2002) Issued on behalf of MLC School

MLC School organises many recreational activities within and beyond the curriculum during the course of a year (‘Activities’).

MLC School expects students to behave in a safe and responsible manner and to comply with the MLC School Code of Conduct and to take responsibility for their own safety by wearing any compulsory safety equipment and by behaving in a safe and responsible manner.

While MLC School takes measures to make the Activities as safe as reasonably possible for participants, there is a risk that students can be injured and suffer loss (including financial loss) and damage as a result of their participation in these Activities. A risk of harm can arise as a result of a variety of causes, actions or situations whilst participating in these Activities. Parents, spectators and officials could also be injured or suffer loss.

Such injury can occur while the students are engaging in or watching the Activity or travelling to or from it. The injury may result from a student’s actions, the actions of others, the actions or inaction of any of MLC School or activity provider, the state of the premises or equipment failure. Such injuries can occur when the students are engaging, or watching the activity or travelling to and from the event.

On some occasions, an injury can be serious (such as torn ligaments, dislocations, back injuries, concussion or broken bones) and result in permanent disability. If a student has a pre-existing injury, participating in an Activity may exacerbate that condition.

From the Learning Enhancement Department

From the Learning Enhancement Department

The Learning Enhancement Department is looking forward to partnering with you once again in 2026. This year brings renewed energy, thoughtful refinements to our programs, and a continued commitment to supporting all students who engage with us at their point of need. Communication and collaboration with families remain central to everything we do. Through this newsletter, key updates, opportunities, and insights into learning across the year will be shared, and we warmly invite you to engage with us throughout Term 1.

I am delighted to introduce you to members of our team.

Meet James Adams, High Potential Learning Leader

Having joined the School during Term 3 2025, James Adams serves as one of two High Potential Learning Leaders working across Junior and Senior School in 2026. James brings extensive expertise in High Potential and Gifted Education, having previously held the roles of High Potential Coordinator and Head of Oratory at Cranbrook School. James holds a Master of Science in Gifted Education from the University of Oxford and a Master of Educational Leadership from Harvard University. James also lectures in Gifted Education at the University of Sydney and currently serves as the Australian Delegate to the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children (2025–2027).

2026 Horizons Program

In Term 4 2025, MLC School successfully piloted the Horizons Program with a selected group of Year 7 and Year 8 students. Following the immense success of this pilot, MLC School will expand the program to include Year 5 to Year 9 from Term 1 2026. This evidence‑informed initiative is designed to extend high potential learners by engaging them in intellectually rigorous topics that move beyond the standard curriculum and reflect the depth and inquiry characteristics of university‑style learning. During the Term 4 2025 pilot, students investigated key concepts in Psychology which included the influence of social dynamics and conformity on human behaviour.

Applications for the 2026 Horizons Program will be released progressively in the coming weeks. Year 9 applications are now available via this link. and will close on Monday 9 February 2026.

Supporting a positive start to 2026

Evidence demonstrates that effective support for diverse learners begins with careful observation that is responsive to need. The NSW Department of Education emphasises that ‘observation informs responsive teaching and planning.’ By observing how students respond to changes in routines, environments, and expectations, teachers can plan supports that are timely and individualised. This deliberate observe‑then‑plan approach reduces uncertainty, builds confidence, and supports continuity of, and engagement with learning.

During the initial weeks of the school year, Learning Enhancement staff will observe your daughters to gain a comprehensive understanding of how they participate in the learning process. These observations will inform collaborative planning conversations and enable adjustments and supports to be thoughtfully aligned to your daughter’s learning profile which may include the development of a Personalised Academic Learning Plan.

We look forward to engaging with you.

Study Hub+ in Term 1

Study Hub+ in Term 1

During 2025, we were delighted to see a steady increase in students taking part in Study Hub+, particularly in Year 8 and Year 9. Many families have shared that the program has been a valuable space for students to build on their prior learning, stay on top of homework and develop positive and consistent study routines. Our mentors also play an important role in strengthening students’ understanding of their classwork, something especially helpful at a time when using AI tools can sometimes leave students unsure about the task or concept they are working on. It has been wonderful to see students becoming more confident, independent and engaged in their learning.

Study Hub+ is MLC School’s structured, pay-per-use after-school study support program for students in Year 7 to Year 12. Sessions run Monday to Thursday, from 3.30pm to 6pm, on Level 1 of the Senior Centre.

Please use the form above to nominate the day(s) your daughter will attend in Term 1 2026. You may select all Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays, or choose specific dates on a weekly basis.

Led by Program Coordinator Ela Huber and supported by a team of knowledgeable mentors, all of whom are pre-service teachers. Study Hub+ offers subject-specific assistance across a wide range of disciplines, including English, Mathematics, Sciences, History, Legal Studies, Economics, Geography, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE), and Drama.

Program Overview:

  • Schedule: Monday to Thursday, 3.30pm–6pm
  • Location: Level 1, Senior Centre
  • Cost: $25 per session, charged to your daughter’s account at the end of term
  • Environment: Phone-free zone to minimise distractions which will allow students to build good study habits.
  • Support: A minimum of two mentors per session, rotating to provide diverse subject expertise.
  • Additional Assistance: Mentors can assist with study plans, exam preparation techniques, and provide verbal feedback on drafts.

To foster consistent study habits, families are encouraged to register on a termly basis. However, weekly bookings remain available via Omnia and the newsletter. Students will receive a reminder email at around 2pm on their scheduled day, confirming their session and assigned room.

Cancellation Policy:

If your daughter is unable to attend a scheduled session, please provide at least 24 hours’ notice to avoid being charged. In cases of illness where your daughter is absent from school, you will not be charged.

For any questions or further information, please contact Program Coordinator Ela Huber.

Nomination Form for Study Hub+

From the Head of Junior School

From the Head of Junior School

It has been a delight to welcome all our new and returning families to the 2026 academic year at MLC Junior School. Our Pre‑Kindergarten to Year 6 girls have had a very successful start, getting to know their teachers, settling into routines, and making new friends.

At MLC Junior School you will often hear the phrase ‘you are only new for a day.’  To our new families, a very warm welcome to the MLC School community. I know our continuing families and staff will reach out to you and help you feel welcomed.

140 Year Anniversary

This year MLC School is celebrating 140 years of excellence in girls’ education. To commemorate this occasion each girl will receive a badge that she may wear with her School and House badge.

Assembly

Each Thursday afternoon at 2.20pm, our Kindergarten to Year 5 students attend the Junior School assembly. Pre‑Kindergarten will join when they move into Kindergarten, and Year 6 are invited to attend the Senior School assembly later this term.

At this week’s assembly, our School Value Courage was introduced as the theme for Term 1. This is particularly fitting, as many girls are stepping up to demonstrate courage – whether by making new friends or, for some, starting at a new school.

During Term 1 and Term 2, each grade from Kindergarten to Year 5 will host an assembly, and parents, grandparents and carers are most welcome to attend.

As the girls settle into the new school year, I encourage you to read the article by our Deputy Head of Junior School – Wellbeing, Joanne Sharpe, in this week’s newsletter, here. It explores courage and offers practical suggestions for supporting your daughter as she adjusts to the new school year.

Thank you for attending. If you have daughters in more than one grade and are unable to attend each session, we will ensure all relevant information is sent to you in writing.

Class Timetables and Term Overviews

Term 1 timetables are available on our parent portal, Omnia. Term overviews will also be available next week.

Absences

If your daughter is absent, please submit details via Omnia

If she is arriving late or leaving early, please email Junior School Reception at jsreception@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au, and copy in the class teacher where possible.

Lunch Orders

If you would like your daughter to have lunch supplied, please order via Flexischools, particularly for Pre‑Kindergarten to Year 5. While students may purchase some items over the counter, lunches must be ordered in advance. Morning tea and other items may also be ordered online.

Birthday Celebrations

Birthdays are an exciting time and often a joy to share. Many parents and carers like to send in a treat for their daughter’s class. Please be mindful of allergies –particularly nuts. Treats should be individual items the teacher can distribute easily, as outlined in our Parent Handbook

We kindly ask that birthday (or other) gifts are not distributed via the School.

Staff Spotlight

During Term 1 we welcome Dylan Kuronuma, who is teaching Year 4 while Selina Clarke is on leave, and Lina Elkhoury, who is teaching Year 3 while Samantha Edwards is on maternity leave. Both Mr Kuronuma and Mrs Elkhoury are well known to our School community.

We also welcome Carol Peterson, who is teaching Year 5, and Brooke Panagopoulos, our new Kindergarten Coordinator.

In upcoming newsletter editions, new staff will be featured so you can get to know them a little better.

Brooke Panagopoulos

With more than 20 years of teaching experience across Australia, London and Singapore, Brooke brings a rich global perspective to her work. She holds a Bachelor of Education (Primary) from the Australian Catholic University and a Master of Education in Gifted Education from UNSW. Brooke is deeply committed to meeting the diverse learning needs of all students.

Her previous role as Gifted Education Coordinator at Santa Sabina College strengthened her passion for nurturing and challenging learners so they feel valued, happy and successful. She has a particular interest in girls’ education and the ways in which young learners can be empowered both academically and personally. She is especially excited to return to Kindergarten, where curiosity, joy and foundational learning come together in such meaningful ways.

Once again, welcome to the 2026 school year. I look forward to supporting your daughter to achieve her very best this year and to meeting many of you at our upcoming welcome drinks on Friday 6 February 2026 at 6pm.

Courage – A School Value

The start of a new school year marks a fresh chapter filled with possibilities, challenges, and the promise of growth. Among the many values that help us navigate this journey, courage stands out as an essential quality for both students and educators. Courage is not just about facing fears; it is about stepping out of comfort zones, embracing change, and striving to become the best version of ourselves.

Courage can be defined as the ability to do something that frightens one or to persevere in the face of adversity. It is not the absence of fear, but the decision to act despite it. In the school environment, courage manifests in many forms, from trying out for a new sport or club, to asking questions in class, to standing up for what is right.

Why is courage important?

  • Facing New Challenges: Each school year brings new grades, teachers, classmates and new spaces. Courage helps students adapt to these changes and overcome the anxiety that often comes with the unknown.
  • Building Confidence: When students act courageously – by speaking up, participating, or making new friends – they build self-confidence and learn valuable life skills.
  • Promoting Growth: Mistakes and setbacks are part of learning. Courage enables students to learn from errors rather than be discouraged by them, fostering resilience and a growth mindset.
  • Supporting Others: Courage is also about helping classmates who may be struggling or standing up against mean on purpose behaviours. It contributes to a safer, more inclusive school environment.

As we embark on a new school year, let’s make courage a guiding value in our learning and interactions. By embracing courage, we open ourselves up to new experiences, overcome challenges, and support one another in our shared journey. Every act of courage – big or small – makes a difference and sets the tone for a rewarding and successful year ahead.

From the Head of Senior School

From the Head of Senior School

We have had an excellent beginning to 2026. Our Year 7 students have adjusted wonderfully after a busy week of transition, which included Commencement Day, plenty of Luminary time, and ended with their incursion today titled ‘The Journey.’ This program focuses on friendships, peer connection, stress management, and building positive relationship behaviours. It is a vital step in supporting the wellbeing of our girls at school.

At the other end of the spectrum, our Year 12 students are eager for the year ahead. They were thrilled to receive their lockers in the undercroft this week, where they have been assigned the top lockers. Their ‘Little Sisters’ in Year 8 have the bottom lockers. We have already noticed encouraging cross-year group interactions and positive modeling of behaviour among our students.

This year, from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12, our emphasis is that every lesson counts. Whether it is a class, a House event, an assembly, or an incursion, we recognise that attendance and genuine participation are crucial for students to feel connected to the community. As parents, we ask that you help us by keeping absences to a minimum and scheduling appointments and vacations outside of school hours whenever possible.

As we mark our 140th year of excellence in girls’ education, it feels especially meaningful that this week, Katherine Bennell-Pegg was honoured with the Australian of the Year award. She is an Australian astronaut and the Director of Space Technology at the Australian Space Agency, and is the first Australian woman to qualify as an astronaut. Her ambition is to be the first person sent into space as part of an Australian mission.

Bennell-Pegg said on Sunday, ‘For Australia to be able to influence and to contribute to addressing the global issues of the next years, the next century, we need every curious mind engaged, regardless of gender, of background or of postcode.’

As a woman, a parent, and a leader in this school, I was thrilled to hear her say this because at MLC School, it reflects our core purpose: educating girls to Dare to Be More and to become the best she can be.

Mobile Phones

The School rules allow students in Year 7 to Year 12 to bring a mobile phone to school each day though they must leave their mobile phones in their locker for the duration of the school day. This means, that once they enter the School gates, they must not be using their phones.

Year 12 students will be permitted to check their phones in the Common Room during breaks if necessary. Parents wishing to get an urgent message to their daughters are to do so through the Studies Office by calling 02 8741 3117.

Please also note that students will only be permitted to use their student cards, cash or a physical credit card to purchase at the Café. Students are not permitted to use their phones to purchase through ApplePay.

Thank you for your support on this.

Sun safety

Please ensure that your daughter has an MLC School hat to wear each day. If she is in the sun at recess and lunch, she will be required to have a hat or she will be required to sit in the shade. Our next outdoor assembly is the Cadets Establishment Parade on Thursday 26 February 2026. The Parade has been scheduled for the morning at 8.30am to reduce the impact of the sun, however all students must have a hat in order to participate in the event. Students and staff alike have also made good use of the new sunscreen stations around the School.

PDHPE: Building Healthy Habits for Life

PDHPE: Building Healthy Habits for Life

A very warm welcome to the 2026 school year. We hope you and your family enjoyed a restful and refreshing break. The Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) Department is delighted to welcome two new staff members, Daniel Lomax and Natalie Smith, as Sarah Papachristoforou begins parental leave. As lessons commence, it has been wonderful to see smiles, energy, and laughter return to the field.

What to Expect in PDHPE This Term

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) is a core learning area that plays a vital role in supporting students’ health, wellbeing and social development, while equipping them with the skills to make informed decisions and engage in lifelong participation in physical activity.

PDHPE combines both theory and practical learning experiences, Lessons are designed to cater for a wide range of abilities, encouraging students to challenge themselves within a supportive and inclusive environment. The subject also offers senior pathways, including HSC Health and Movement Science and IB Sports, Health and Exercise Science.

Uniform and Participation

To ensure safety and full engagement in practical lessons, students are expected to wear the correct MLC School PE uniform, including a hat and appropriate footwear. Sunscreen and a water bottle are strongly encouraged. Please note that bike shorts are not permitted.

If a student is unable to participate in a practical lesson, a parent or guardian email is required prior to the lesson. Where appropriate, students will remain meaningfully engaged through alternative activities or roles such as umpiring, coaching, or skill observation.

We value strong partnerships with families. If you have any questions about the PDHPE program, please contact your daughter’s PDHPE teacher via email or feel free to contact me directly.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to a wonderful year!

– Jane Timor
Acting Head of Department – Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)

Year 7

Year 7

What a wonderful start to the year for Year 7! It has been a joy to see students engaging so enthusiastically in all the commencement activities, including Luminary time, Peer Support and The Journey incursion. I have been particularly impressed by the resilience Year 7 has shown as they navigated the campus for the first time – sometimes getting a little lost, but using their diaries, asking for help, and even offering support to others. Hearing, ‘I know the way, let me show you!’ echo through the lockers has been a real highlight.

As we know, transitioning into high school is both exciting and challenging. To help our students feel grounded and supported, Year 7 participated in a full‑day incursion, The Journey, intentionally designed to strengthen peer relationships, foster belonging and equip students with the social and emotional skills they need as they begin high school. Facilitated by Enlighten Education, this program is a key component of our orientation program and helps prepare students for the adventures and challenges of Year 7.

Through interactive, hands‑on activities, students explored strategies for stress management, building positive friendships, and the importance of including others. By the end of the day, many Year 7 students reported feeling more connected to their Luminary group, their peers and the broader school community, providing a strong foundation for the year ahead.

Staying organised for the week | Reading the Weekly News

Each week, I will post a Weekly News for students on their Year 7 Canvas page. This includes key events for the upcoming week, along with important reminders. I have encouraged all Year 7 students to make a habit of reading this on Sunday evening so they can be well prepared for the week ahead.

An example of what might be included in the Weekly News would be a reminder about school photos. We begin Week 2 with school photos on Monday 2 February 2026. Please remind your daughter to bring her blazer. A detailed schedule will be shared with Year 7 through their Weekly News. Sibling photos will take place on Wednesday 4 February 2026.

School Photos on Monday

It’s important students are in full School uniform for photos next week. Find out how to order and read more about this by clicking here.

Who to contact?

A reminder of some key contacts within the School:

Academic matters: Contact the class teacher first, then the Head of Department if needed.

Year 8

Year 8

Welcome back Year 8 families and students. I am looking forward to another wonderful year. It was fantastic to see the students return in beautiful uniform, excited to see their friends, mostly excited to see their teachers and ready to go. The students were excited to move into their new lockers which are now placed below their Year 12 ‘Big Sister’ so that we can continue to develop their vertical connections here at school.

We are beginning the year with a few new rules that I would like to reiterate here.

Phone usage and headphone usage

Students are not to have their phones out at all when on school grounds. This means from the moment they are on campus, until they leave, their phones should be in their bags, and bags are in lockers during the day. Students should lock their lockers to ensure their belongings remain safe. Headphones/airpods are only permitted to be worn around school if a student has a Headphone Pass given to them by their Head of Year. Students should not be arriving at, or leaving school with headphones on, or around their necks. Students are permitted to carry headphones with them in their laptop bags to use in class if directed by their teacher.

Next Monday 4 February 2026, is School Photo Day, so please make sure the hair, uniform and jewellery are perfect, including polished shoes and minimal make up.  Please read more by clicking here.

I hope you all rest up after a big first week and have a chance to get ready for Week 2!

Happy New Year and Welcome Back

I am delighted to be continuing with this cohort in 2026 and to support the students as they progress further into their secondary schooling and begin their journey towards becoming senior students.

There has been a positive and energetic atmosphere around the School this week, with many students enjoying the opportunity to reconnect with friends and teachers. However, we recognise that returning to school can be challenging for some students. If your daughter is experiencing anxiety or concerns about the start of the year, please be assured that a range of supports are available. I encourage you to contact me via email here so we can address any concerns early and work collaboratively to ensure all Year 9 students feel comfortable, confident, and supported in their school life.

This year, Year 9 students commence their elective subjects – an important milestone that allows them greater agency and choice in their learning. Given the wide range of electives on offer, students may find themselves in classes without all of their close friends. We have been encouraging students to step outside their comfort zones, build new connections, and engage positively with new classmates and teachers. Students will remain in their chosen electives for the first four weeks, allowing sufficient time to experience the subject content. In Weeks 5 and 6 of the term, students will have the opportunity to request a change of elective, subject to timetable availability.

The Luminary System continues to play an important role in student wellbeing, providing each student with an additional trusted adult within the School who can offer guidance and support. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding your daughter’s school experience, you are welcome to contact her Luminary or myself. Over the coming weeks, each Luminary will be in touch to introduce themselves and conduct an early check-in, ensuring your daughter has made a positive start to the year.

The Luminaries for each group are:

Abbeythorpe Xavier Maling
Booralee Derek Truong
Churunga Megan De Souza
Leawarra Phoebe Sze
Lester Maryellen Ottaway
Mooramoora Wayne Symes
Prescott Sarah An
Sutton John Purcal and Lynne Bondar
Wade Elizabeth King
Whitley Nicole Guymer

A reminder that House Chapel Services will be held throughout the term (see dates below). These are compulsory school events, and all students are expected to attend. If your daughter is unable to attend her scheduled House Chapel Service due to prior commitments, we ask that a parent communicates this by emailing both the Head of House and myself. All absences must be explained, and students who are unable to attend their House Service will be required to attend a Chapel Service for another House.

I look forward to working closely with you throughout 2026 and supporting our Year 9 students as they continue to grow and thrive.

Year 10

Year 10

Welcome to Year 10 2026. I’m looking forward to working with you all this year as Head of Year. I am grateful to Emily Marsh, for all her help and support in the transition to the new group and I work closely with Fiona Pow as Head of Students – Year 10 to Year 12.

The girls have had a positive start to the term on Wednesday with our first-year meeting, Luminary time and getting straight into classes.

We welcome four new students this year, and we are excited to have some new faces share the senior journey with us – Eloise Dyster, Elsa Zhu, Jiwan Park and Evelyn Stupart. They have been working with their buddies to get used to new routines and spaces and making new connections in their Luminary groups, teams and classes.

I’m privileged to be working with such an experienced team of Luminaries – most of whom have worked with the girls since Year 7. Joining us is Jo Cilia and Ashleigh White in Sutton and Louise Piggott in Abbeythorpe. Jo and Louise bring a great deal of expertise to the senior space – Jo as Head of Futures and Pathways and Louise as Head of Library Services, as well as being experienced Luminaries.

Year 10 begins their Careers education program next week with the Careers Profiling Test and follow up interviews in Week 5 (week commencing Monday 23 February 2026). Please click here for further details.

In wellbeing this term, we focus on a number of key areas of social and emotional learning – navigating friendships, dealing with change, managing emotions, resilience and the importance of gratitude. Stress management is a key component of the Year 10 Luminary program as we help students to manage challenges – both academic and personal. In conjunction with the careers program, we will be looking at Character Strengths and using these tools to build self-esteem and resilience. The Academic Care space works within our Luminary program also and we will be looking at study skills for Year 10, the science of learning and team building.

As part of our commitment to support the parent community, your daughter’s Luminary will be contacting you to check in on your daughter’s transition to Year 10. Please flag any issues you wish to discuss for us to follow up. In my role as Head of Year, it is my aim to support you to support your daughter as you progress through Year 10 to Year 12. It is an exciting time with lots of things to look forward to – work experience and the Year 10 Immersion in Term 4.

I look forward to meeting you at the Parent Information Evening on Wednesday 4 February 2026 and the Parent Welcome Event on Friday 6 February 2026.

A reminder too about photo day on Monday 2 February, it’s important students are in full School uniform for photos next week. Find out how to order and read more about this by clicking here.

Year 11

Year 11

What a great week it has been welcoming Year 11 back to school. It was a joy to see them return looking refreshed, positive, and ready to embark on the beginning of the final stage of their schooling journey.

During our Year Meeting, we spoke about the unique nature of Year 11 as a transition year. Transitions bring excitement and opportunity, but they can also feel a little daunting. The girls are clearly energised by the prospect of starting their new courses, and I can sense their enthusiasm for the challenges ahead. At the same time, it’s natural for them to feel some uncertainty – What does it look like to be a senior student? How do I use study periods effectively? How do I balance increased academic demands with co‑curricular commitments, sport, friends, and family?

I reassured them that these questions are completely normal, and that this year is as much about learning the skills of being a senior student as it is about the subjects themselves. Importantly, they are not navigating this alone. They have a fantastic team of teachers and staff who are here to guide, support and encourage them to achieve their personal best.

We also discussed what it truly means to be a senior student emphasising the importance of attendance, accountability, responsibility, respect, and perspective. These qualities will help them not only succeed academically but also grow personally.

I am very much looking forward to seeing many of you at the Parent Information Session as well as at our Parent Welcome Drinks. Building strong partnerships with families is a vital part of supporting each student, and I am excited for the year ahead as we work together to ensure every Year 11 student feels confident, supported, and set up for success.

Year 12

Year 12

It has been a wonderful start to the year for our Year 12 cohort. The energy, enthusiasm, and maturity they have brought into this first week have set a positive tone for all students. From supporting new students on Commencement Day, setting good first day vibes at the main gate and leading the singing of many favourite songs or hymns during Chapel, our cohort has been shining all week long!

As our students step into their final year, it has been heartening to see them reconnect with peers, engage thoughtfully in their lessons, and approach new responsibilities with gusto. I am thrilled to be back with the cohort and to assist them through all the joy this year will bring! I am grateful for the ongoing support of our families and carers and look forward to partnering with you all throughout this important and exciting year. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Daniel Lomax (Sutton) and Helen Kondos (Leawarra) to our Luminary team for 2026!

At the end of the school year, over 100 students from the Year 12 cohort volunteered over at the 2025 MLC School Sony Foundation Camp. All staff were amazed by the support our students showed to their campers, engaging with them with compassion and care at every turn. Their selflessness was evident in the way they worked together, demonstrating leadership, empathy, and genuine care for others. I am confident this experience will be among some of their most treasured memories from their time at school.

Mentor Program: As our Year 12 students embark on their final year of school, we know this stage brings excitement, ambition, as well as some heightened anxiousness. As such, this week we formally commenced the Year 12 Mentor Program. This initiative is designed to provide students with an additional layer of personalised care as they navigate the academic and emotional demands of the year. Each mentor will check in with their mentee across the year at a time which works for both students and staff. I’d like to thank all our amazing MLC School staff from every corner of the School for supporting this program and reinforcing the community of care around our girls.

Permission to Drive: I was very excited to hear that over the break and even just this week some students in Year 12 passed their driving tests and received their Ps – congratulations! If your daughter now has her provisional licence, please ensure the ‘Permission for a Student to Drive to and From School’ form is completed (found on Omnia). Once completed, students can submit the form to Fiona Pow, Head of Students – Year 10 to Year 12.

Hats: Senior School students must wear an MLC School hat (visor, bucket hat, or cap) for all outdoor events or assemblies to stay sun safe.

Photos Monday 2 February 2026: it’s important students are in full School uniform for photos next week. Find out how to order and read more about this by clicking here.

Welcome To Sport in 2026

Welcome To Sport in 2026

Welcome to 2026! We have a big year planned for sport at MLC School. We have been back for a number of days and already the School is alive with the girls training and preparing for the year in sport!

This year our theme for all our programs is making the impossible possible through sport. This is not just solely focused on record-breaking performances; instead, it is about empowering each individual to overcome self-doubt and embrace new challenges. In the coming year, we will encourage all students –even those who may be unsure or unfamiliar with certain sports – to participate. We believe that the next athletics star may well be in the hallways and have yet to discover their passion for sport. Ultimately, sport at MLC School isn’t just about winning (although we really really like to win!) – it’s about belonging. It’s about cheering so loudly at House Athletics Carnival that the neighbours start asking if we’re hosting a concert. It’s about high-fives, team bus singalongs, and those moments when a teammate helps you up and says, ‘You’ve got this.’ That’s the kind of community spirit that makes our School a place where everyone’s on the team.

Sport is not reserved for the super talented or experienced, but is open to everyone, especially those who may have questioned their own abilities. 2026 will be the time to challenge yourself and give something new a go, make the impossible possible!

We have already made significant strides in enhancing the overall sporting experience by investing in the development of our coaches, upgrading our training venues, and expanding the range of programs on offer. Our coaches last week undertook professional development and ‘coach the coach training’ and will continue to do so throughout the year with each new term of sport. We are embracing new techniques and approaches that cater to athletes of all skill levels, ensuring that every student receives tailored support, encouragement and greater skill development. You will have also noticed increased communication across all sports this term. If your daughter has signed up to a Term 1 sport you should have received several emails from the coordinator informing you of training days/plans for the term.

Friday afternoons will be buzzing with the new Junior School sport afternoon. We have programs from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6 running. As of this week we have over 70 Junior School girls signed up ready to be active!

In the gym we have the newly designed MLCFIT program open to students from Year 5–Year 12 and with our Diving coach ‘Golden’ Shixin Lee we have more sessions and programs available.

Make sure you keep up to date with the newsletter each week so that you don’t miss any new and exciting opportunities that will be available.

Don’t forget, lets all join in and make 2026 the year to make the impossible possible!

Sport Department Staffing 2026

Sport Department Staffing 2026

Last year saw a huge improvement in attendance in games and training for all Saturday sport teams. We would like to build on that this year. All students that have signed up and made a commitment to play sport are required to turn up to every game and training session. Consequences for those students who do not fulfil their commitment remain in place. Students in Senior School will be given an Accountability Point for the first offence in a term. After that sport detentions will be given. Let’s keep supporting each other and the School by not only ‘showing up’ each week but having fun, learning some new skills and showing the amazing School Spirit that we have.

If your daughter is unable to attend a game or training session, please ensure you contact the Sports coordinator well in advance so that a replacement can be found for the matches. The night before does not help, so as much notice as possible is appreciated by everyone.

Diving – Country Championships, Orange 17 January to 18 January

Members of our MLC School Diving team with coach Shixin Lee travelled to Orange to compete at the Diving Country Championships. The Team achieved some fantastic results and gained lots of competition experience. During the holidays we also held a Diving Camp where girls were able to practice and learn new skills. In Orange the girls achieved the following results:

  • 4th place 12/13 girls 1m

Daisy Han (Year 7)

  • 1st place girls pathways level 6
  • 6th place 12/13 girls 1m

Calais Durie (Year 6)

  • 4th place 11/u girls 1m – qualifying for Nationals in April

Harper Begnell (Year 4)

  • 4th place girls pathways level 5

Ada Savage (Year 10)

  • 1st place 14/15 girls 1m
  • 1st place 14/15 girls 3m

In Orange we all had such an amazing and fun time diving while facing new challenges that come with diving in an outdoor pool like wind, rain, and intense heat spread across both days we were out there. Country championships were such a great way to start off diving in 2026, and I hope the rest of the competition season goes as well as this.

Rowing

Over the summer holidays, the MLC School Rowing team travelled to Chifley Dam in Bathurst for a pre‑season training camp. Across the week, students collectively rowed well over 100,000 metres, pushing through early mornings, challenging sessions, and the occasional headwind. The camp balanced hard work with plenty of camaraderie, team bonding, and moments of fun on and off the water. The experience has provided a strong foundation for what promises to be a busy and competitive term of racing. With improved technique, and a strengthened team culture, the rowers are well‑positioned for an exciting season ahead.

Holiday Production Fun!

Holiday Production Fun!

Congratulations to our amazing casts of our December holiday production The Nutcracker Princess and our January production KPop Down Under.

After auditioning and casting roles, the students embarked on a magical journey into the world of theatre. They rehearsed scenes and learnt lots of dances, added costumes, set and lighting bringing it all together for the big performance for family and friends. Our amazing casts performed brilliantly, and the shows were a hit!

The productions are a wonderful opportunity for students to have fun with their friends and meet new ones from all year groups. We see an enormous amount of confidence develop over the production week and for some students it is the first time they have performed on stage in front of an audience.

Enrolments for our April Holiday production will open in Week 6 (week commencing Monday 2 March 2026)
