Year 9

Year 9

This week during Luminary time, Year 9 explored the important distinction between being a bystander and an upstander. Building their discussions about the bystander effect from Week 3, students examined how choosing to ‘stand by’ can unintentionally support harmful behaviour.

With the guidance of their Luminary teachers, students unpacked the concept of an ‘upstander’ – someone who chooses to stand up and take positive action when they witness injustice. Through video resources and group discussions, students reflected on real-life scenarios and considered how they might respond in ways that are safe, respectful, and supportive of others. I encourage you to continue these conversations at home with your daughter.

Study Support at MLC School

As we near the end of the term, it is a natural time for each student to pause and reflect on their academic journey – what they have achieved, where they have grown, and where they might still need support. It is also a good time to remind students and families about the academic supports available at MLC School:

Their classroom teacher: Students are encouraged to speak to their classroom teacher if they have questions or need support in a particular subject.

Lunchtime clinics: Staffed by MLC School teachers, these ‘drop in’ clinics are run during lunch on the following days:

  • Mathematics: Tuesday and Thursday
  • English: Tuesday

Study Hub+: A pay-per-use after school program to support students with study and goal setting. Sessions run from 3.30pm to 6pm Monday to Thursday in the Senior Centre. There will always be a minimum of two tutors at each session and these tutors rotate daily to give the students access to a variety of tutors and subject offers. More information can be found here.

Wearne Library: Popular for quiet study, collaborative classes, group work and co-curricular clubs. The Wearne Library opening hours during term time are as follows:

  • Monday to Thursday: 7.30am–5.30pm
  • Friday: 7.30am–4.30pm

Study skills resources: We also encourage students to ensure they are using the resources on their Academic Care Canvas page. This page also includes the worksheets shared through Dr Salter’s Study Skills workshop in Year 7. A reminder that Dr Salter’s study skills site can also be accessed by you at home to support your daughter to develop productive study habits and practices:

Access can be found at: www.studyskillshandbook.com.au

Uniform reminders

A reminder that students are expected to wear their blazers to and from school as the outer garment for Term 2 and Term 3. I ask for your support to ensure your daughter is wearing her correct uniform to and from school, including her blazer.
