Year 12 – Personal Health, Development and Physical Education Update
Sports, Exercise and Health Science Internal Assessments are in full swing
The Internal assessment (IA) is an integral part of the SEHS course, contributing 20% to the final assessment in the SL (Standard Level) and the HL (High Level) courses. It enables students to demonstrate the application of their skills and knowledge, and to pursue their personal interests. The Year 12 Sports, Exercise and Health Science (SEHS) students have been organising their IA data collection over the past few weeks. They are required to complete their own personal investigation on a topic of their choice and write a 12 page report. Some of the areas that are being completed this year are:
- The impact of fatigue on the accuracy of consecutive chest passes in Netball
- To what extent does no sound, booing and cheering impact on the time taken to complete a basketball agility test
- An investigation into how the lane choice in athletics affects the performance of a 200m runner
- To what extent does changing the weight and material composition of a softball bat impact on how hard a ball can be hit measured by the exit velocity of the ball
For each investigation the students needed three independent variables, five repeat trials and 10 participants. It takes time and patience to complete the data collection as they need to control as many variables as possible to ensure that the only aspect being analysed is the condition being tested. After collating their data the students are able to complete a series of statistical tests and answer their research question.
Thank you to all the students who have been able to assist the Year 12 SEHS students in their data collections. We really appreciate your help.
