Year 10

This week in Luminary, the groups nominated our first round of Luminary Representatives which I can announce in next week’s newsletter. As with anything, I have noticed varying degrees of enthusiasm regarding Luminary Representatives but for the most part many have been positive to have a representative to voice their ideas regarding Luminary and what is happening within our Year group. It is great to see many taking more ownership over making positive change around them. During the Year meeting last week, it was interesting to see the girls’ ideas on the role description for a Luminary Representative. Many have quite high expectations of the role, although I anticipate this is a safe practice ground to lead discussion, negotiate with staff on behalf of others and learn new skills.

Also, in Luminary this week, many of the groups discussed what happens to you when you don’t drink water, and the short and long-term effects of caffeine. We have seen a significant increase in coffee drinking and also energy drinks, which are purchased on the way to school. The temptation is there after late nights working on assessments. It is worth having a discussion at home regarding the substitution of sleep with energy drinks, which can often result in a highly emotional student throughout the day.

On Wednesday a voluntary group of Year 9 and Year 10 girls went to the Stand Tall Event 2021. This inspirational event hosted many speakers with the aim to provide students with key resilience skills to manage challenges to motivation, perspective, making good decisions and bullying. Claire White, Head of Year 9 who accompanied the group, told me that the Year 10 girls that went along were awesome, that they embraced the opportunity and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Thank you Anais Siu (Year 10), India Makovec (Year 10), Mimi Jones (Year 10), Keiralyn Dao (Year 10), Laura Andrikis (Year 10), Anna Xu (Year 10), Erica Chou (Year 10), Jasmine Stavros (Year 10) and Jenna Wright (Year 10) for representing MLC School so well.

After a challenging term, I am happy that the cohort has a long weekend ahead of them to relax and tie up any loose ends for the term, as they have been working very hard.

If you have any current concerns for your daughter’s wellbeing, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, by phone 8741 3278 or email arenwick@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au.
