Safer Internet Day
Safer Internet Day, celebrated on Tuesday 11 February 2025, is a global initiative aimed at promoting a safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially among children and young people. This day represents a collective effort to raise awareness about online safety issues and to empower individuals to navigate the digital world with confidence and security. It serves as a reminder of the importance of creating a safer online environment for everyone, particularly for girls who may face unique challenges and risks in the digital space.
The significance of Safer Internet Day in our society cannot be overstated. For girls, the internet can be a double-edged sword, offering opportunities for learning and connection while also exposing them to potential dangers such as cyberbullying, online harassment, and exploitation. By focusing on the specific needs and experiences of girls, we can work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive online community. Encouraging open communication is crucial in this regard, as it allows girls to share their concerns, seek help, and build resilience against online threats.
In addition to fostering open communication, it is essential to educate both young people and adults about the importance of digital literacy and online safety practices. This is why here at MLC School we incorporate a Cybersafety/eLearning scope and sequence that spans across Kindergarten to Year 12. This includes understanding privacy settings, recognising and reporting harmful content, and promoting positive online behaviour. By working together, we can ensure that the internet remains a safe and empowering space for everyone, especially for your daughters who deserve to explore the digital world without fear. We at MLC School will use Safer Internet Day as an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to a safer and more inclusive online environment.
If you would like an opportunity to further your horizons in this space, the eSafety commissioner provides regular free parent webinars covering several topics in this field. Please click here to access the registration page.
