From the Head of Junior School
It may be a short week due to the public holiday, but it was a busy week for many parents and carers who visited our Junior School campus. On Wednesday we hosted our ‘Tween to Teen’ workshop for Year 4 parents. Thank you to all those who attended this session facilitated by two of our School Psychologists. This was followed by the Year 4 Celebration of Learning. On Thursday morning it was the turn of Year 5 to host their Celebration of Learning, and we also had Kindergarten’s assembly that afternoon. We cherish these opportunities when parents and carers may visit our School to see the girls. And the girls are delighted to see their important visitors at School.
Year 2 students ventured to the Sydney Opera House this week as part of an excursion for their studies in Drama. We look forward to hearing more about their day next week.
We welcome Elizabeth Grasso from the Australian Catholic University who will be working with Kindergarten and teaching Italian for the remainder of Term 2 and during Term 3.
Piano, Voice and String Festival
We wish all the girls participating this afternoon’s Piano, Voice and String Festival all the very best. It is pleasing to see so many Junior School girls participating.
Smart Phone Addiction
This week research was made available from Macquarie University regarding children’s time on screens. This research found children in upper primary school were spending around 6.5 hours per day on screens (this includes television). It was a topic of discussion at our Year 4 ‘Tween to Teen’ parent workshop. Not all screen time is unhealthy. It can be purposeful, educational and entertaining. However, there are aspects of extended screen time that is not heathy for developing brains. The report noted that children with high screen use experienced up to three times more negative developmental effects than their peers. Screen time is a community responsibility, including school and home.
