A Student asks, ‘Why do Duke of Edinburgh (DofE)?’
As the DofE Award Leader at MLC School, I was recently asked by a Year 9 student, ‘What benefit is there in doing the Duke of Edinburgh Award?’ This question made me think that there might be other students and parents wondering the same thing, especially with everything else going on at the school. Who needs another distraction?

Firstly, as the Award Leader, my role is to help students make the most of all the curricular and co-curricular activities they are already involved in, whether it is at school or in their home life. My aim is to ensure as much as possible counts towards their award. Also, with the DofE Teams guidance and an engaged student, can have Bronze, Silver and Gold finished at the end of Year 10.

Here was my answer to the student: ‘It helps set you apart from other Year 12 students across the State by showcasing your exceptional time management skills, commitment, and dedication to serving the community. The award highlights to future employers and course interviewers that you can face challenges, step out of your comfort zone, and embrace growth opportunities. The DofE is a journey of personal development and transformation, empowering you to become resilient, resourceful, and confident leaders. Moreover, it provides a chance to build lasting friendships and connections with like-minded peers, fostering camaraderie and mutual support, showing your awareness of what it is to be part of a Team. The skills and experiences gained not only enhance academic and professional prospects but also contribute to a well-rounded and fulfilling life. Additionally, the award’s recognition by universities and employers adds significant value to your resume, making you stand out in a competitive environment. The sense of achievement upon completing the award is unparalleled and testifies to your perseverance and hard work. The DofE is an international award that officially rewards and acknowledges everything you do here at MLC School.’

We have regular DofE meetings in SG001 every Monday lunchtime, where students can drop and get their questions answered.
