Year 12

Year 12

Environment Week

Each term, Week 8 is Baraza Group Week. This week, the Year 12 students spent time on Monday watching a TedTalk tackling the big environmental issues like climate change and other global environmental issues. After viewing the film, the girls gathered in their Luminary groups and the House Captains led a discussion focusing on the following questions:

  1. How is our environment impacted by changes in our behaviour in response to global challenges?
  2. Are there lessons to be learnt from previous environmental challenges? What are they? How can these lessons guide our future actions?
  3. Is our desire to clean up our environment driven by wanting to put things right for the sake of our planet (for nature itself) or is it about creating a more sustainable future for our own sake? If we continue to damage our environment, are we ultimately only really damaging ourselves?
  4. If our aim is to maintain our civilisation and way of life, what is the trade-off between human growth and development and the creation of a sustainable future?
  5. How can we transform the way we behave so that we let our development be guided by our environment and its needs, rather than manipulating the environment to suit our development?
  6. What does sustainable human development mean to you? How can this be implemented to help address the issues we face in relation to the environment?
  7. Do you think that the combination of a lot of small, simple changes is enough to address our current climate crisis? Or are more large-scale changes necessary to make a significant change?
  8. What do you currently do that may negatively or positively impact the environment? What opportunities available to you for positive impact are you not currently making use of?

The depth of discussions and the deep understanding that our girls demonstrate regarding topical issues never ceases to amaze us and we have so much faith in the future with MLC School girls at the helm, they are truly amazing.

As we approach the final week of term, we encourage the girls to continue to persevere and dig deep as we tackle the last few days of Term 2. The mid-year break is in sight.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Enjoy the long weekend!
