{"id":2971,"date":"2021-12-17T00:54:23","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T00:54:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebuzz.net.au\/mlc-oldgirls\/?post_type=article&#038;p=2971"},"modified":"2021-12-17T00:54:23","modified_gmt":"2021-12-17T00:54:23","slug":"australian-mathematics-competition","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.thebuzz.net.au\/mlc-oldgirls\/article\/australian-mathematics-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian Mathematics Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the challenges of remote learning and the demands of onscreen time, MLC School students once again showed their tenacity with 134 girls taking the opportunity to compete in Australia\u2019s oldest Mathematics competition, <em>the Australian Mathematics<\/em> <em>Competition<\/em>. I am pleased to announce that 91 of our students achieved a <strong>Credit, Distinction<\/strong> or <strong>High Distinction<\/strong> award. Notable mention goes to <strong>Nitya Nimalan<\/strong> in Year 8, our <strong>Best in School<\/strong> and <strong>High Distinction<\/strong> Award recipient, placing her in the top 3% of the Junior Division.<\/p>\n<p>The following students received <strong>Distinction<\/strong> awards:<\/p>\n<p>Year 7 \u2013 <strong>Allegra Chiang, Kathleen Chrun, Jaslina Duong, Anna Obaid, Elena Sun, Isabella Zhou<\/strong><br \/>\nYear 8 \u2013 <strong>Misha Behi, Sarinna Cai, Claire Lee, Anisha Miah, Anita Mohanan, Aiesha Sivaranjan, Annaliese Yan<\/strong><br \/>\nYear 9 \u2013 <strong>Cara Britton, Fiona Feng<\/strong><br \/>\nYear 10 \u2013 <strong>Erica Chou, Chloe Jing<\/strong><br \/>\nYear 11 \u2013 <strong>Alicia Ding, Sarah Pearson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Four Year 9 students also braved the Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad, a four-hour examination attracting 1600 talented Mathematics students from Years 9 \u2013 10 across Australia. <strong>Cara Britton<\/strong> and <strong>Fiona Feng<\/strong> both received <strong>Credit<\/strong> Awards in this gruelling examination.<\/p>\n<p>Opportunities such as the Australian Mathematics competition, the Mathematics Challenge and Enrichment programs give our students exposure to Mathematics outside the classroom and a taste of the work mathematicians in university and scientific organisations (such as NASA) do daily. We hope that in the future more of our students take up the challenge of these external competitions. This year <strong>Tasha Wong<\/strong> from Year 8 was awarded a <strong>High Distinction<\/strong> in the Maths Challenge and <strong>Nitya Nimalan<\/strong> achieved a <strong>Certificate of Distinction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To further encourage our talented students to pursue the beauty that a problem offers in its complexity and solution, we will be introducing a <strong>Mathematics Club in 2022<\/strong> dedicated purely to solving the seemingly unsolvable and giving the girls the opportunity to immerse themselves in a problem for a sustained period of time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211; Penny Pachos<\/em><br \/>\nHead of Department &#8211; Mathematics<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the challenges of remote learning and the demands of onscreen time, MLC School students once again showed their tenacity with 134 girls taking the opportunity to compete in Australia\u2019s oldest Mathematics competition, the Australian Mathematics Competition.
