Issue 11 - 25 March 2022

From The Principal

On Tuesday 1 March 2022 I had the opportunity to address those attending our first ‘in person’ school tour for some time. Despite the very wet conditions, many families took the opportunity to hear from staff and students and tour our beautiful facilities.

I spoke about the vision of our founders and the January 1886 Sydney Morning Herald announcement of the impending opening of the Wesleyan Ladies College, Burwood, which will ‘make provision for those who wish to prepare for University honours’ (and that this was only two years after the legal rights of women at the University of Sydney had been secured). I was again struck by the contrast between this daring plan and the lives of most women at that time.

In 1886, Australian women had no political voice, few protections from poverty or harm and Indigenous women had no rights at all. It was not until 1902 that most women in NSW were able to vote, and as late as 1962 when Indigenous women gained this same right.

Yet, despite this, many of MLC School’s earliest graduates went on to fight their way through discrimination; political and social barriers; and paved the way for the recognition of women and their rights.

Dr Susannah Hennessy (Susie) (O’Reilly, 1898) was a pioneering female doctor and a champion of professional women’s rights who became a renowned obstetrician, she was MLC School’s first Old Girl with a degree in Medicine.

At the University of Sydney, Susie achieved excellent results in her Bachelor of Science (1903), Bachelor of Medicine (1905) and Master of Surgery (1907) degrees. Despite the fact that she was an Honours graduate and was fourth in her year, her application for a residential post at Sydney Hospital was rejected in favour of male applicants with poorer academic records.

This discrimination on the grounds of her gender, spurred Susie into action and she became the focus of media attention and public debate in the form of editorials and letters to the newspapers about discrimination and the role of female doctors. Susie O’Reilly’s public battle with Sydney Hospital subsequently opened the doors of that institution to receive female residents. Her sister (and MLC School Old Girl) Dr Olive O’Reilly (1909) became one of the first two female medical students admitted to Sydney Hospital in 1912.

Amy Isobel Wearne (1889) was MLC School’s first university graduate (from the University of Sydney). After winning the University’s Frazer Scholarship in 1893 and then graduating with first class honours in History, Amy returned to teach at MLC School.

She, along with a contingent of girls, initiated MLC School’s Athletics Carnivals. The first athletics carnival for girls in Australia occurred on MLC School’s Sports Field on 3 November 1906. It was also during her reign that basketball was introduced in girls’ schools, and she was the coach of our very first team.

And more recently, Alison Mirams (Hocking, 1991) has had a remarkably successful career in property construction. When she was 32, she became a Director at Multiplex and was the first woman and the youngest person worldwide to hold this role. Alison is the CEO of major construction firm, Roberts Pizzarotti. In 2018, she was awarded the Laing O’Rourke Business Woman of the Year award at the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) NSW Awards for Excellence.

Elicia McDonald (Fowler, 2006) is leading the way for women in the male-dominated industry of venture capital. Elicia is a Partner at one of Australia’s largest Venture Capital funds, AirTree Ventures. In an industry heavily dominated by men, she is one of the few female Partners leading investments into technology start-ups.

So, when you hear us say MLC School girls ‘dare to be more’, we are referring to a long history of women who have challenged preconceptions, fought for justice, and proudly proclaimed the right for all girls to be given the same opportunities as boys. I hope one day, we can say that the job is done, but with “millions of women and LGBTI persons around the world continuing to experience discrimination in the enjoyment of civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights” there is a long way to go.

The MLC School website has a series of wonderful stories about the achievements of some of our alumnae and their part in the fight for women to be recognised as equals in every regard.

Celebrating the Class of 2021

Awards recognised Excellence in Academic Achievement for Subjects, Nominations in the Creative and Performing Arts, University Entrance, and NSW State Rankings.

A record 12 students received the highest possible ATAR of 99.95, but we celebrated the achievements of all the students of 2021 for prevailing over two years of lockdown and disruptions to all their planned final events.

Ros Pesman Medal

This year saw the introduction of a new recognition, the Ros Pesman Medal. The Medal is to be given to any student who attains a First in the State in an HSC subject. The inaugural Ros Pesman Medal was awarded to Elsa Tonkinwise (2021) for her First Place in the State in Ancient History.

Ros Pesman (Cooper, 1954)

After achieving excellent academic results at MLC School, Ros began her studies at the University of Sydney (USyd). She graduated with a BA (Hons) degree and was later awarded a PhD from the University of London.

Returning to Australia, Ros took up a history lectureship at USyd. She was promoted to Senior Lecturer, then Associate Professor and finally to a personal chair in history.

Ros has an international reputation both within her field as well as within tertiary education leadership; she held many key leadership roles at USyd. Notably, she was the first woman to be elected Chair of the Academic Board and was the first woman appointed to the Challis Chair in History.

In 2012, Ros was awarded an AM for services to tertiary education through academic and administrative roles.

Ros achieved many firsts for women in academia and has served the discipline with great distinction. It is fitting that girls who achieve great distinction within their subject receive an award named in her honour.

#BreakTheBias – International Women’s Day 2022

#BreakTheBias – International Women’s Day 2022

On Tuesday 8 March 2022, MLC School celebrated International Women’s Day with a breakfast. The School was fortunate to have the NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb APM as our guest speaker. As the Commissioner mentioned, the NSW Police Force only began to accept women in 1915, long after MLC School was founded to educate young women.

The IWD theme for 2022 was: #BreakTheBias. The Commissioner and guest panellists, including Newington College School Captain and Gender Equity Captain joined a lively discussion on this very relevant topic – addressing how we can challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements.

Photos of the event are on the MLC School Facebook page. A recording of the event can be found below.

Swimming Carnivals are Back!

Swimming Carnivals are Back!

It was wonderful to have everyone back together for our annual House Swimming Carnival. The pool deck was buzzing from 7.30am with eager House Captains and Heads of House decorating the House areas and preparing for the day ahead. Congratulations to all students who swam to get points for their House, cheered non-stop all day and encouraged and supported their friends. Well done to our Year 12 girls for the fantastic synchro routines.

No doubt, the highlight of the day was Frances Booth, Deputy Principal, jumping off the diving board! I’m sure everyone in Burwood could hear the students and staff chanting “Boothy, Boothy” as we watched in anticipation as she prayed at the end of the diving board and finally took the leap of faith! Click on the MLC Facebook page video to watch ‘Boothy’ here. Maybe next year she will be brave enough to go off the 3-metre board?

For photos from the day, please visit the MLC School Facebook page.

Looming with LOVE – How You Can Help

Our looming group has started back this year with great passion and enthusiasm. There are more than 20 new members who had never used a loom before, and have now learned how to make a beanie. The beanies made during the year are donated to Hats for Homeless which hands out the beanies to aid agencies and women’s shelters across the state. Last year MLC School students and keen staff members, made and donated over 250 of the 3917 Hats for Homeless donated last year.

If you would like to support this group, we welcome wool donations. If you have some around the house, please send it in for us to turn into a beanie made with love and care. If you are a keen knitter, we would love to add your beanies to our donations, so please do send those in as well.

The Looming with Love group meets Tuesdays at lunchtime and girls willingly giving up their lunchtime to do something for others. The small gesture to create a quality product to give away to help someone in need, makes a profound impact for those who receive the beanies.

I am so proud of all the girls involved.

Blessings

Mathematics Students Continue to Shine

Mathematics Students Continue to Shine

MLC School students with strength in mathematics continue to enjoy opportunities offered to them by the University of Sydney and the Australian National University. This year, Vicky (Year 12) and Cara (Year 10), have been selected to take part in extended problem-solving programs designed to challenge and further motivate talented mathematics students.

The National Mathematics Summer school at ANU was established in 1969 and is the oldest and most prestigious Summer School of its type in Australia. Old Girl, Cynthia Hu (2021) was invited to mentor the new 2022 students. Vicky shares her experience below:

‘I really enjoyed the week at NMSS as NMSS has offered me an awesome opportunity to explore the scope of Mathematics outside of school. We explored Number theory and Algorithms challenged me and gave me new perspectives on Mathematics. The questions were significantly different from what we do at school and take a lot of experimentation, sometimes reaching conclusions without an exact answer. Although it was a pity that we were not able to go to ANU in Canberra and have face to face interactions, the tutors and experienced groups were able to make everyone feel welcome through the many online games and I met some great people from all around Australia, including someone who’s also doing IB and has very similar subjects with me.’

We look forward to hearing back from Cara who will begin her journey with USyd’s Mathematical Problem Solving Correspondence Program (MaPS) this term.

The Mathematics department welcomes Alex Schroder who has taken on the role of Mathematics Enrichment teacher.  Alex will be coordinating our problem-solving programs and is introducing a Mathematics Club for talented Year 7 and Year 8 mathematics students. These sessions are designed to build our students’ mathematical thinking, communication, collaborative skills and problem-solving abilities.

Don’t Wait to Apply to Enrol

Don’t Wait to Apply to Enrol

Old Girls of MLC School are given preference for their daughters to be offered a place at the School whenever possible.

However, as many years are now moving to long waiting lists, such preference cannot be guaranteed, especially if you leave it late to complete an application.

To ensure your daughter can progress to an enrolment interview, it is highly recommended that your application be made by  her first birthday or at least three years prior to the nominated entry level. Putting in an application the year before your desired starting year is likely to mean that we will be unable to find a place for your daughter.

Enrolment interviews start 2.5 years before starting year. For example, interviews are currently being conducted for 2024. Families with applications for 2025 will start to be contacted by mid-2022. It is vital that an application has been received before the commencement of interviews for that entry year at the very latest.

For information on enrolment entry levels and enrolment steps please click here.

Should you wish to apply for your daughter you can now do so online here.

The enrolments team are always available to answer your questions, please contact either:

  • Nerida Coman, Registrar by email or directly on 8741 3165, or
  • Fadia Aoun, Enrolments Administrator by email or directly on 8741 3116

All applicants must observe the School’s enrolment procedures.
