Issue 10 - 17 December 2021

Thank you to our MLC School Old Girls’ Union

As the year winds to an end, I want to take the time to highlight one of the many special aspects of MLC School. The support of donors and volunteers across the School makes a profound contribution and speaks of the type of community we are: kind, generous, considerate of others and willing to make a difference. I am truly thankful to be a part of such a community.

Thank you to the MLC School Old Girls’ Union (OGU). The OGU is an active participant in the life of MLC School, ensuring we stay connected with our former students through events, communications, personal contact and supporting School-wide initiatives such as the Teachers’ Scholarship. Recently, the OGU has worked with the School to rejuvenate parts of the Chapel, and has helped to enhance the presentation of Potts Hall. The OGU was a significant seed donor to the School’s Bursary program contributing $100,000 to the fund.

  • Sue Cartwright (Packham, 1981), President
  • Helena Grahame (1959), Vice-President
  • Joanne Brady (Foster, 1989), Secretary
  • Ingrid Zhang (2001), Treasurer

In 2021, Old Girls, parents and staff gave 762 individual gifts towards Giving Day, Scholarships in general and the Building Fund (117 were given anonymously).

Our first ever Giving Day, in May, far exceeded our target of $160,000, to raise over $210,000.

Your support be it financial, time or contribution of insight means that the School can extend its function and purpose beyond what can be achieved through our own staffing and resourcing. More importantly, it provides a connection that forms the very life blood of our wonderful community.

Despite having to manage the multiple personal and professional demands posed by an incredibly challenging year, volunteers have continued to support the School in a number of ways:

MLC School Council

Members of the School Council give countless hours of time and expertise in order to ensure that the School is well governed. Although much of what they do goes unseen, it is as a consequence of their vision and hard work we have a clear, shared vision for MLC School; high quality, ever-improving facilities and can plan for the future with confidence. The current Chair is an Old Girl, as was the former Chair, evidence of the enduring commitment of our Old Girls to the School.

  • Dr Paraskevi (Eve) Tsironis (1988), Chair
  • Kylie Bryden-Smith (1989), Deputy Chair
  • Dr Suresh Cuganesan, Treasurer
  • Lynn McNally, Secretary
  • Colman Chan
  • Ita Farhat (1996)
  • Fiona Hollier (1974)
  • Pauline Johnston (1988)
  • Dr David Mulford
  • Rev Danielle Hemsworth-Smith
  • Rev Lindsay Cullen

Facilities and Infrastructure Committee Member

  • Darren Kindrachuk

MLC School P&F Members

Members of the Parents and Friends committee serve the School in a wide variety of ways. In addition to welcoming and supporting new parents, fundraising and running parent forums and community events, the committees also ensured that the exceptional efforts of our staff were recognised. Again, many Old Girls serve on the P&F, including the current President of the P&F and President of the Junior School P&F.

  • Abirami Ravichandra (1996), President
  • Elizabeth Keast, Vice-President
  • Penny Chu, Treasurer
  • Linda Tsang, Vice-Treasurer, Junior School Treasurer and Junior School Parent Representative
  • Aleksha Mehta, Secretary
  • Rebecca Lim, Community Relations Coordinator
  • Sarah Prince (1996), Junior School President
  • Cassandra Bourke, Junior School Vice-President and Junior School Parent Representative
  • Emma Munro (1991), Junior School Co-Secretary
  • Dee McGuire (1992), Junior School Co-Secretary
  • Cassandra Black, Junior School Book Club Coordinator
  • Judith Flett, Senior School Parent Representative
  • Marnie Reid, Senior School Parent Representative
  • Sharlene Zeederberg, Senior School Parent Representative

  • Lexi Dodd, Middle Years Parent Representative
  • Nicole Fung-Coady, Middle Years Parent Representative
  • Nicole Williams (1988), Merchandise Coordinator
  • Deniz Ulutas, General Member

Donors and Volunteers

Thank you to our generous volunteers and donors for your love and support for the School. The list is a long one (and I am humbled to see just how many names appear here), it is true indicator of the willingness of our community to lean in and help others.

Please take the time to view the full list of all our supporters, which can be found here.

Please note: We have endeavoured to ensure this is a full and accurate list of all those who supported the School in 2021. However, we may have made errors. If that’s the case, please accept sincere our apologies and contact Michele Dunn via mdunn@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au so we can correct our records.

As we see 2021 out, I wish you all the joy and peace that Christmas brings. I hope you relax and enjoy your family, emerging in 2022 with renewed energy to face whatever the New Year might bring our way. Happy Christmas!

Thank You Colman Chan for Your Exceptional Service

Thank You Colman Chan for Your Exceptional Service

At the end of this year, we farewell long serving Council member Colman Chan who was appointed to MLC School Council in June 1998.

Colman has worked tirelessly on behalf of the School over the time of his tenure. He has represented the MLC School Property Trust and was made a ‘Fellow’ of the MLC School Foundation on 15 March 2006.

Many of you will recognise Colman from his regular attendance at School functions and we are incredibly thankful for his support and advice. We know that you will join with us in thanking Colman for his exceptional service to the School over so many years.

Farewell to the Class of 2021

Farewell to the Class of 2021

Despite a year of restrictions and cancelled events, we were finally able to properly farewell the graduating class of 2021 in the last week of Term. The 2021 Valedictory Assembly and Service was held on Monday 6 December 2021 in the Bird Bath Quad with parents, staff and Year 12 2021 in attendance.

The morning was filled with captain farewell speeches, academic prize announcements and the traditional distribution of House candles. The girls then took their final lap of MLC School through a guard of honour created by MLC Senior School students, to the beat of our Taiko drummers.

Below is a link to a webpage with more videos and photographs from the day.

On behalf of everyone at MLC School, we wish our newest MLC School Old Girls all the best for the future and look forward to seeing what they accomplish.

Speech Day and Speech Night at the ICC

Annual Speech Day for Junior School and 136th Annual Speech Night for Senior School was held at the International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour. With many restrictions lifted, parents and family members were able to attend their first major school event in nearly six months.

The occasions were an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the girls for their hard work throughout 2021. All MLC School girls dared to be more and should be extremely proud of what they accomplished this year. Congratulations to the prize winners on their academic achievements.

Old Girl presents work at Melbourne Fashion Week

Congratulations to MLC School Old Girl Georgia McNaughton (2017), currently at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) doing honours in Fashion. Georgia was one of the students chosen to show her works in the Student Runway at Melbourne Fashion Week in November. Melbourne Fashion Week ran from 15–21 November 2021.

‘My collection is titled ‘Rejects Reborn’ and it seeks to explore a collision between the extraordinary and the everyday. Most of my materials were sourced from recycle centres around Melbourne and my aim is to turn found material into something valuable, giving materials another life by undergoing a material transformation.’

MLC School takes 1st and 2nd Place at RoboCup Junior NSW Open

MLC School takes 1st and 2nd Place at RoboCup Junior NSW Open

On Tuesday 14 December 2021 there was a virtual presentation for the RoboCup Junior NSW Openand the two MLC School teams placed 1st and 2nd in the OnStage Division!

For the competition they were required to submit a 1-2 minute performance using robots they had designed, built and programmed and a student interview explaining the technical aspects of the performance. RoboCup Junior is open to all primary and secondary students in NSW (so its even more exciting that our two junior school teams placed 1st and 2nd).

The girls worked so hard to complete their entries for the virtual competition despite the challenges of lockdown, we are so proud of them to have come away with 1st and 2nd Place! We will receive the trophies and medals in the new year.

1st Place:
Year 6 Team – ‘Dare to be Robots’ (the girls named the teams 😆)
Nicola Keast, Nectaria Constanti, Violet Le, Cheylene Leung, Isabelle Forster.
Mentor : Marie Cassar

2nd Place:
Year 5 Team – ‘The Mad Scientists’
Ada Savage, Caydence Sumantri, Ethelia Cassar, Catia Placanica, Rithika Vinoth.
Mentor: Bede Schofield

We have also started a STEM Club in Science during Term 4, called Girls for Science (pro scientiae). We have 18 girls from Year 7 to Year 11. We have started by using an online light generator to look at light and colour and build a digital production to music. Student will soon be creating holiday lights using biology and phosphorescent bacteria, chemical reactions that create fluorescent lights and assembling and coding LED lights using physics principles. The girls will showcased their productions in Week 10 (week commencing Monday 6 December 2021) as we celebrated the end of the year and the start of the holidays!

Australian Mathematics Competition

Australian Mathematics Competition

Despite the challenges of remote learning and the demands of onscreen time, MLC School students once again showed their tenacity with 134 girls taking the opportunity to compete in Australia’s oldest Mathematics competition, the Australian Mathematics Competition. I am pleased to announce that 91 of our students achieved a Credit, Distinction or High Distinction award. Notable mention goes to Nitya Nimalan in Year 8, our Best in School and High Distinction Award recipient, placing her in the top 3% of the Junior Division.

The following students received Distinction awards:

Year 7 – Allegra Chiang, Kathleen Chrun, Jaslina Duong, Anna Obaid, Elena Sun, Isabella Zhou
Year 8 – Misha Behi, Sarinna Cai, Claire Lee, Anisha Miah, Anita Mohanan, Aiesha Sivaranjan, Annaliese Yan
Year 9 – Cara Britton, Fiona Feng
Year 10 – Erica Chou, Chloe Jing
Year 11 – Alicia Ding, Sarah Pearson

Four Year 9 students also braved the Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad, a four-hour examination attracting 1600 talented Mathematics students from Years 9 – 10 across Australia. Cara Britton and Fiona Feng both received Credit Awards in this gruelling examination.

Opportunities such as the Australian Mathematics competition, the Mathematics Challenge and Enrichment programs give our students exposure to Mathematics outside the classroom and a taste of the work mathematicians in university and scientific organisations (such as NASA) do daily. We hope that in the future more of our students take up the challenge of these external competitions. This year Tasha Wong from Year 8 was awarded a High Distinction in the Maths Challenge and Nitya Nimalan achieved a Certificate of Distinction.

To further encourage our talented students to pursue the beauty that a problem offers in its complexity and solution, we will be introducing a Mathematics Club in 2022 dedicated purely to solving the seemingly unsolvable and giving the girls the opportunity to immerse themselves in a problem for a sustained period of time.

7A Debaters Take Out Archdale Grand Final

7A Debaters Take Out Archdale Grand Final

The Grand Final of the Archdale Debating Competition was held during the week starting 22 November 2021. Congratulations to our 7A team (Amelia Tchan, Umaiza Mahfuz, Anna Obaid, Harriet Hahn and Elena Sun) which was victorious over Kambala to take out the Grand Final.

Our eight teams began debating back in April 2021, so it’s been a long haul to get to the end.

Most of the competition has been conducted online this year and for the finals our teams were able to prep together in a room at school. Our 7A team defeated Pymble to make it through to Tuesday evening’s Grand Final.

The Grand Final started with a coin toss to decide sides and then topic selection. Teams have a choice of three topics they can list in order of preference. Our team took the Negative side debating the topic, “Political parties should not be able to advertise on TV” against Kambala. It was a lively debate with excellent speakers on both sides, a panel of three Adjudicators gave the win to MLC School.

In the overall points tally for the Archdale shield, MLC School came in second, just one point behind the winners for 2021, SCEGGS. Congratulations on an outstanding season to all our debaters.

Debating Coordinator

MLC School Cadets Continue to Excel

MLC School Cadets Continue to Excel

MLC School cadets have had a busy time leading to the end of this year. On Friday 19 November 2021 we travelled to Newington College to parade as a whole Unit for the first time in Semester 2. We welcomed 48 new recruits and three new staff, our new RSM* Jacqueline Flett lead the unit of over 500 with her loud strong voice across the field and we welcomed back an old MLC School Student, LT Riley Bradford to virtually present the Long Tan Award for Team Work and Leadership.

The ADF Long Tan Youth Award recognises students who demonstrate leadership and teamwork within one’s school and local community. It is named after the Battle of Long Tan, which took place in 1966 and was one of the most significant engagements between Australian forces and the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War. At Long Tan, Australian soldiers supported by New Zealand artillery found themselves exchanging fire with a force approximately 10 times their size.

Cadet Coordinator

*Jacqueline is the first female Regimental Sergeant Major of the Newington College Cadet Unit, which is the longest running cadet unit in Australia. This is one of the highest student leadership positions in the unit.

New Sports Fields in Action

New Sports Fields in Action

During lockdown, work on replacing and upgrading the hockey/sports fields at the School was undertaken. The former synthetic hockey/sports pitch was originally built as a training field for the Sydney Olympics 2000. The new fields were officially handed over last week with full access now available for students for all sport and activities.

The new sports field covers 5,800m2 and due to the need for the fields to be marked to cater for a large variety of sports, the builders deemed the project one of the most complex they had ever completed. During the upgrade, 90 tonnes of sand was removed and recycled for use on a golf course, the original synthetic turf and rubber underlay was relocated for reuse in a skirmish centre, saving it from going to landfill.

The use of only Australian Made products was a significant factor in the School’s choice of company to undertake the works. The courts are made from 100% Australian Made Poligras H2Oz COOLplus turf with permanent linemarking for hockey, 9 x tennis courts, 3 x netball courts and 3 x basketball courts. Poligras was recently used for the Olympics in Japan and has received rave reviews for its Green Technology.

In the midst of the project, NSW’s lockdown halted all construction work for some time, interstate logistics were delayed and adhering to the NSW Health Orders meant extra safety measures had to be enforced.

In the end, MLC School has an outstanding new facility to benefit the entire student body.

G Block Classrooms Upgraded

G Block Classrooms Upgraded

The maintenance and renovation never stops at MLC School. Our Maintenance crew was exceptionally busy during lockdown and whilst the sports field was the major project, there were plenty of other tasks undertaken.

One of the challenges of updating and renovating an historic school is to sympathetically retain the history and architectural features throughout the decades, whilst bringing a modern feel to new generations of MLC School girls.

In the middle of the year, G Block classrooms received a much needed refurbishment. The beautiful windows in this block have been highlighted to play a starring role, whilst new carpet, fresh paintwork and mirrors (dance) have been added to give a contemporary feel.

Snowsports Recognition for both Student and Teacher

Claudine Talbot (Year 12) has been recognised for her contribution to Interschool Snowsports and has been announced as a finalist for 2021 Snow Australia Community Sport Awards – Spirit of Interschools Awards.

‘Claudine has been actively involved in leading, promoting and recruiting skiers and boarders at MLC School Sydney for the past six years across all disciplines, with a personal focus on Cross-country skiing. Talbot was the School’s Snowsports Captain in 2021, and whilst she was on student exchange in the USA she embraced innovative ways to captain her team remotely.’

Congratulations Claudine!

Kylie Bickerstaff
Assistant Director of Sport

Snowsports Recognition for Kylie Bickerstaff

Congratulations to our Assistant Director of Sport, Kylie Bickerstaff, on her recognition from Snow Australia for her contributions to the Interschools community. In the absence of Snowsports School of the Year and Outstanding School Achievement awards (due to COVID event cancellations in the last two seasons) that are traditionally presented at the Community Sport Awards, Snow Australia wishes to recognise school snowsports coordinators for the role they play in driving participation in snowsports. School coordinators for the Interschools Championships play a major role in encouraging new families into the sport, along with supporting those who already participate.

With over 600 schools currently competing in the Interschools Championships across Australia, Snow Australia is recognising Kylie, who has been nominated by our MLC School community. Kylie Bickerstaff at MLC School is a very encouraging, fun, and supportive school coordinator.

Kylie has built a snowsports family at MLC School through pre-season training programs, organises on-snow training, dinners and informal gatherings. She goes above and beyond her role even organising lessons for parents to give cross country skiing a go. Kylie has developed a supportive environment within the team and challenges to try an event that they wouldn’t normally have competed in. She is proud of every single girl that has a go.

Director of Sport

Scholarship Updates

Did you know that we have 128 Old Girls with daughters currently enrolled at MLC School?

Did you know that daughters of Old Girls are prioritised for interviews and there is a special Old Girls Scholarship for daughters of Old Girls entering Year 7?

The Edna Curtis (daughter of an Old Girl) Scholarship – is awarded to the applicant who achieves excellent results on the entrance examination and successfully meets the ‘all rounder’ criteria but is also the daughter of a former student of the School. The half scholarship is awarded by the Old Girls’ Union.

The process for 2023 is now closed but information for girls commencing 2024 will be available on the MLC School website in May 2022.

This year MLC School also introduced an all-rounder scholarship for girls to commence in Year 5.

The School believes that Year 5 is the time for girls to take a leap in terms of independence, responsibility and organisation – it is all about providing a platform for girls to step up to their full potential and become role models for the younger girls in the Junior School. This new scholarship provides more girls with the opportunity to access the School’s unique upper primary program to gain the confidence for a smooth transition to the Senior School.

Since its doors opened in 1886, MLC School has played an important role in revolutionising girls’ education in Australia, and its history bears all the hallmarks of the changes the School has led.

Challenging preconceptions of women’s roles and redefining expectations of what girls can and should achieve shapes the School’s educational philosophy today as much as it did in those early days, 135 years ago.

The School’s motto, Dare to be More, is not mere lip service, but a genuine attitude that continues to drive how the School approaches the teaching girls and young women. In turn, as each girl graduates, she is charged with taking forth that courageous attitude into the rest of her life.
