Learning Beyond the Classroom

At MLC School, we believe that learning is a holistic process that encompasses curiosity, engagement, and the nurturing of critical thinking, and these final weeks are providing an opportunity for our girls to develop these dispositions and more.

While we will certainly reflect on the timing of various assessment tasks and our reporting schedules now that the school year aligns with the calendar year, Term 4 provided a wonderful opportunity for teachers and students to connect and engage with learning in a different way. MLC School’s Immersion program has long been regarded as an outstanding example of rich, integrated, real-life learning. From the introduction of the Broken Hill experience over 25 years ago, we have recognised that learning is an expansive concept that goes far beyond assessments. It encompasses a wide range of experiences, skills, and personal growth which demands that learning take many forms and occurs in a variety of settings.

Aside from the creative and rich learning that is taking place in our classrooms, in recent weeks our Year 12 2025 students spent valuable time preparing for their final year of schooling at their retreat in Katoomba; our Year 10s were immersed in new and challenging environments locally and internationally; our Year 9s undertook a memorable unit on The Future of Food; and our Year 8s worked in teams to complete the Sydney Urban Challenge.

As they participate in these transdisciplinary opportunities, our students are developing a range of essential skills and learning dispositions.

Inquiry-based learning such as this, where students investigate questions and problems, fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential in the real world.

We also know that the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively is paramount. Learning in different environments that promote teamwork, discussion, and the sharing of ideas help students develop these vital skills.

The activities are also designed to develop our students’ ability to think critically and reflect on their own understanding. This means analysing information, evaluating different perspectives, and making informed decisions. These skills are crucial for navigating the complexities of modern life.

And of course, learning is not just an intellectual pursuit; it also involves emotional and social growth. By working in groups and in a variety of settings, students are developing empathy, resilience, and self-awareness which are essential skills for building healthy relationships, managing stress, and navigating challenges, and preparing them for success beyond the classroom.

So far from wasting time, during these final weeks of school our students were encouraged to embrace a holistic approach to education, engage with the complexities of real-life problems, work with teams and overcome challenges; essential preparation for years to come and life beyond school. I would like to acknowledge the remarkable commitment that our staff have shown in planning, implementing and being part of these rich learning experiences.

A great education is not confined to grades and tests but is a journey of discovery and transformation.

Wishing all our future families a joyful and restful Christmas season. May your holidays be filled with peace, love, and happiness.

Immersive learning at MLC School

Immersive learning at MLC School

At MLC School, immersive learning is key to our educational approach. We believe education extends beyond the classroom, fostering critical thinking and personal growth through diverse experiences. Our Experiential Learning Program includes co-curricular activities, service projects, and outdoor education, placing students in real-world environments. This enhances academic knowledge and equips students with essential life skills for success. Below are highlights of the immersive experiences in the Senior School this term.

Year 10 Urban Challenge Immersion

Our Year 10 girls embarked on an incredible journey across Sydney, embracing challenges with enthusiasm and teamwork. From cracking codes in escape rooms and surfing to budgeting exercises, dance workshops, and preparing meals for those in need, they’ve demonstrated remarkable skills and compassion. These activities are part of our commitment to providing a holistic education that fosters personal growth, resilience, and community spirit.

Duke of Edinburgh Holiday Trips

Over the Term 3 holidays we had a number of students undertaking their Adventurous Journeys and Residential Projects.

A mixture of Year 9 and 10 students headed to Central Australia. The students were lucky to see the waterfalls of Uluṟu in action, as the area experienced one of its rare rain days. As is the case in Central Australia, the rain quickly moved on and was replaced by blue skies. Students continued on to visit the Valley of the Winds at Kata Tjuṯa, circum-navigate Kings Canyon, including venturing down to the Garden of Eden and finished off with a 3am wake up call to climb Mt Sonder for sunrise. The final day was about recovery, so a swim in Ormiston Gorge was organised, wrapping up the trip with relaxing campfire on the last night.

History Tour 2024 – Germany and Italy

During the September/October school holidays, 34 students and five teachers embarked on an unforgettable History Tour to Germany and Italy. Our students explored key historical sites in Munich, Nuremberg, Berlin, and Salzburg, gaining deep insights into WWII and the Cold War. Highlights included visits to the Nazi Rally Grounds, Dachau Concentration Camp, and the Berlin Wall.

In Italy, the journey continued with visits to Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Rome. Students experienced the rich history of Ancient Rome, from the Colosseum to the Trevi Fountain, and even enjoyed a pizza-making class in Sorrento.

This tour provided us with immersive learning experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of history and culture. We invite prospective families to join MLC School, where educational adventures await!

Year 3 at Stanwell Tops

This year’s Year 3 Camp was an unforgettable adventure filled with laughs, challenges, and bravery. Our young explorers showed their daring sides with each activity, making us incredibly proud.

The giant swing was a highlight, with students soaring through the air amidst screams of excitement. They also enjoyed an Indigenous session, tasting lemon myrtle and wattle seed, learning about traditional hunting weapons, and playing new games. Rock wall climbing tested their courage, with many reaching the top and celebrating with huge smiles and high-fives.

We had a blast and are already counting down to next year’s camp for more laughs and new memories.

Festival of Speech 2024

Festival of Speech 2024

Early in Term 4, on a Friday evening and all day Saturday, MLC School hosted the IGSA (Independent Girls’ Schools Association) Festival of Speech 2024. This vibrant two-day event brought together girls from independent schools around NSW and ACT and provided a platform for young voices to shine through self-expression and creativity.

Throughout the festival, participants engaged in a variety of speech and performance activities, showcasing their talents and passion.  The atmosphere was electric, filled with enthusiasm and camaraderie as students supported one another in their endeavours.

IGSA administers and convenes inter-school activities such as the IGSA Festival of Speech. The festival, which began in 1996, now sees participation from over 500 students from 27 schools. Girls from Year 7 to Year 11 can perform in areas such as drama, debating, poetry, prose readings, theatresports, current affairs, and religious and ethical questions.

The IGSA Festival of Speech is more than just a competition; it is a celebration of the power of words and the importance of communication. It provides a unique opportunity for girls to develop their public speaking skills, build confidence, and form lasting connections with their peers from other schools.

Moreover, this festival underscores the importance of girls’ education. By participating in such events, girls are given the chance to flourish in an environment that encourages intellectual growth and self-expression. The festival empowers them to voice their opinions, share their stories, and engage in meaningful dialogue, all of which are crucial for their personal and academic development.

Girls’ education is pivotal in shaping future leaders and change-makers. Events like the IGSA Festival of Speech play a significant role in fostering a sense of confidence and resilience in young women. They learn to articulate their thoughts clearly, stand up for their beliefs, and inspire others with their words. This not only prepares them for future challenges but also helps them to become active and informed citizens.

My gratitude extends to the large number of staff and students who volunteered their time and effort to ensure the smooth running of the festival. They welcomed guests; supported the various events, the conveners and judges. Their hard work and enthusiasm exemplify the ‘can do’ spirit of MLC School and the welcoming nature of our community.

The host of student volunteers (almost 100 students from Year 7, 8, 9 and 11) were exemplary ambassadors for the School. They showed themselves to be capable, resourceful young women. The entire event reflected positively on our facilities, staff, students and our professional approach to planning and event delivery.

My sincere thanks to Sarah Jauncey, Director of Co-curricular; Andrea Rowe, Debating Coordinator; and Jillian Avramis, Event Manager who were the driving force behind the festival. I received so many compliments and was extremely proud of our School.

Thank you to everyone who participated and supported the IGSA Festival of Speech 2024. Your contributions made this event a memorable and inspiring experience for all.

Middle Years Production: Wendy and Peter Pan

Our talented Year 7 to Year 9 students and dedicated staff have produced another fabulous drama production.

This year’s play, Wendy & Peter Pan by Ella Hickson, was a vibrant reimagining of J.M. Barrie’s classic tale. Set in the magical world of Neverland, the story focused on Wendy’s perspective, exploring themes of courage, loss, and adventure.

Pre-K Rainbow Chapel and Celebration

Pre-K Rainbow Chapel and Celebration

The Pre-K Rainbow Chapel and Celebration at MLC School was a truly magical event that brought together our youngest learners, their families, and the entire school community. The Chapel service, hosted by our enthusiastic Pre-K students, was a wonderful display of joy. Our School Chaplains Rev Vinnie and Pastor Caitlin and Principal, Lisa Moloney, led the service, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that resonated with everyone present.

Parents’ faces beamed with pride as they watched their little ones participate in the service, singing songs and sharing messages of love and kindness. The Junior School campus was filled with an air of excitement and anticipation, which only grew as the service concluded.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the surprise visit from Santa Claus. The girls’ faces lit up with the biggest smiles as Santa made his grand entrance, much to their delight. We were thrilled that Santa accepted Pre-K’s special invitation, bringing along some Senior School ‘elves’ to assist him. These ‘elves’ added an extra touch of magic to the event, helping Santa distribute small gifts and spreading holiday cheer.

Santa and his helpers didn’t stop there; they made sure to visit other grades on the Junior School campus, ensuring that every child experienced the joy of the season. After their whirlwind tour, Santa and the ‘elves’ bid farewell and returned to the North Pole, leaving behind a trail of happiness and festive spirit.

This event was a wonderful reminder of the strong sense of community at MLC School. It showcased the collaborative efforts of students, staff, and families, all coming together to create memorable experiences for our children. For our alumni, it’s a nostalgic nod to the cherished traditions and the enduring spirit of MLC School that continues to thrive.

2024 MLC School Dance Showcase

2024 MLC School Dance Showcase

We are excited to share the footage from our 2024 Dance Showcase, titled Fortitude: Stories of Resilience, which took place on Sunday 8 September 2024, at the NIDA Parade Theatre. This year’s showcase celebrated the inspiring narratives of individuals who have triumphed over adversity throughout history.

At MLC School, we view dance as a vital communicative art form. Our program emphasises critical thinking and non-verbal communication, encouraging students to transcend traditional aesthetics. Fortitude: Stories of Resilience allowed our dancers to explore movement as a means of storytelling, showcasing the strength and courage of both renowned figures and unsung heroes. We encouraged each student to integrate their personal perspectives into the thematic narrative, ensuring an authentic representation of overcoming challenges.
