For all students and boys in particular, learning new concepts requires moving information through distinct cognitive stages and designated homework can play a vital role in this progression.

During a lesson, new information enters a student’s working memory. Working memory acts like a temporary storage drive. A temporary storage drive can have limited space and holds information only for a short period of time. Boys often experience cognitive overload quickly when juggling new information, subjects’ specific terminology, or formulas. If this information isn’t reinforced soon after, a large percentage of it can be lost within 24 hours.

This is where homework acts as a powerful educational bridge. By providing structured, spaced repetition, homework forces the brain to revisit neural pathways established during the school day.

Through this repeated exposure, information transitions from short-term working memory into long-term memory. In long-term storage, concepts are organised into strong and reliable mental networks (schemata).

The ultimate goal of this process is automatic recall (i.e the ability to access facts, routines and rules effortlessly without consuming conscious mental energy). When basic skills become automatic through practice, boys free up valuable working memory capacity to solve challenging problems, write more complex essays and engage in critical thinking.

And if for some reason your son is not given explicit directions regarding homework or he believes he has no homework, reading over class notes and repeating tasks delivered during the school day will serve the same purpose. Hence my position for all boys is that “there is no such thing as no homework”.

Respice Finem

Mr David Sullivan
Principal

["post-7019","article","type-article","status-publish","hentry
["GET
