Week 8

12 June 2026

Dear Parents/Carers

Close enough is good enough

As educators, we often see a common mindset emerge in young men: the belief that a “close enough is good enough” approach to life will be enough. Whether it is rushing through an assignment, leaving chores half-done, or presenting themselves with an indifferent attitude, settling for the bare minimum can be a tempting trap for boys. While it may save them time in the short term, this habit quietly erodes their potential. When “good enough” becomes the standard, it stifles excellence, breeds complacency and prevents them from discovering what they are truly capable of achieving.

The danger of this mindset is that it follows them far beyond the classroom. How a young man approaches his schoolwork and personal presentation reflects how he will eventually approach his career, relationships and responsibilities as an adult. By encouraging our boys to slow down, take pride in the details and understand that true presentation reflects self-respect, we help them build a foundation of integrity and resilience. I am grateful for the support we receive from our parents and continue to partner with us in challenging them to trade the convenience of “close enough” for the lasting reward of what can be achieved by giving their best.

The Resilience Project

All of our staff regularly undertake professional development to ensure we continue to offer the best possible holistic education for our students. One opportunity all staff participated in recently was a presentation from the Resilience Project. We use this program as the basis of a number of our wellbeing initiatives. The project has three main areas of focus when it comes to student wellbeing:

  • Gratitude
  • Empathy
  • Mindfulness

Our staff worked through tools and strategies that we in turn pass on to our students for use in their daily lives. Like all wellbeing practices, they are somewhat of a choose your own adventure in terms of how they are actually used. But regardless, we still believe it’s important to deliver a broad range of skills and strategies to our boys who then take them away and be selective in their use based on what suits their own personal needs.

We also heard a snippet of a podcast called “The Imperfects”. It is created and hosted by members of the Resilience Project team. We had our attention drawn to one episode in particular, a discussion with Maggie Dent. Maggie is a highly regarded Australian parenting author, educator and speaker, with a background in teaching, counselling and palliative care. She is widely recognised for her no-nonsense, no-guilt approach to raising resilient children and supporting families.

Being a parent of a number of boys, Maggie leans into her own experiences raising them in the world today. It can be listened to on most podcast providers (Apple, Spotify, etc) and for free via YouTube (Link to YouTube video). As a teacher with in excess of 20 years of experience in boys’ education and a parent of a teenage son myself, the information shared reinforces so many things we as parents know about our boys, but also prompted reflection and direction (or redirection) to improve how we support our sons to grow and become quality human beings.

Teachers of boys and parents (of boys and girls) will benefit from Maggie’s wisdom, sense of humour and tips for raising our boys. It is quite a long podcast (1 hour 20 minutes), so I’d encourage you to play it in the car on the way to work or on weekends. Maggie’s sense of humour and stories capture perfectly the challenges and possibilities (and untapped potential) of educating and raising boys.

Week 8 – Term 2

12 June 2026

Dear Parents/Carers

As Term 2 starts to head towards its conclusion, I wish to remind families that the last day of classes for all students will be Thursday 2 July 2026. The Learning Centre will be closed from 3.00pm on this day.

On Wednesday 1 July from 3.15pm-7.00pm and Friday 3 July from 9.00am-3.30pm, we will be holding our Parent Teacher Interviews for Years 7, 8 and 9 as advertised on the College Calendar. On Wednesday 1 July 2026 all students will be dismissed early to accommodate Year 7-9 Parent Teacher Conferences. All students will be dismissed at 1.15pm. On Friday 3 July no students will be onsite. Should you require supervision for your son on Friday 3 July, please complete this Google Form by 8.00am on Monday 29 June 2026.

Information regarding these Parent Teacher Interviews was shared in Parent Communications on 5 June 2026.

As we reach the end of a full and energetic Term 2, I want to extend my thanks for your ongoing support of the boys and of our College community. This term has been marked by strong participation, spirited celebration and a genuine commitment to learning and growth.

Our celebration of Champagnat Day was a true highlight of the term, bringing our Marist identity to life in a meaningful way. The boys entered into the liturgy, activities and service experiences with genuine enthusiasm and maturity. It was inspiring to watch them engage with the values of St Marcellin Champagnat, especially the call to community, humility and presence.

As we look ahead, we anticipate a purposeful and productive start. Term 3 traditionally brings renewed academic focus, key assessment periods and a range of co‑curricular opportunities. We encourage the boys to return rested, organised and ready to build on the momentum they have created so far this year.

Thank you once again for your partnership and support. I wish all families a safe, restful, and enjoyable break, and I look forward to welcoming the boys back for another positive term of learning and growth.

We look forward to welcoming all students back to Term 3 on Monday 20 July 2026 in full College winter uniform.

Warm regards

Ms Melinda Alvarez
Assistant Principal

Webinar – Boys: Building Strong Young Men from the Inside Out

12 June 2026

Dear Parents/Carers

As previously stated, Marist College has subscribed to the Happy Families School Membership. Owned and run by Dr Justin Coulson, one of Australia’s leading parenting experts, the membership offers a wealth of parenting education and resources.

Weekly in Parent Communications I have shared resources available through our membership with you. Dr Justin Coulson will be hosting another webinar Boys: Building Strong Young Men from the Inside Out. This will air on Wednesday 17 June 2026 at 7.00pm.

In Boys, Dr Coulson reveals what decades of research suggests: when boys get what they actually need, they thrive. Not through force or fixing, but through connection, meaningful challenge, and someone who refuses to give up on them. This presentation hands you the ‘Playbook’. It cuts through the noise with practical, research-backed strategies for the battles you’re fighting right now. Gaming. Pornography. Self-control. Friendships. School motivation. How to discipline without destroying trust. How to stay close when he’s pushing away. But beneath the tactics lies something more powerful: a vision of masculinity worth fighting for. Boys who help others feel safer and stronger. Who create surplus value. Who become not just good men, but the best version of themselves. Your son already has everything he needs to get there.

Please register here if you are interested in attending this webinar. Please use the school name when you register to assist with tracking engagement with the service.

In addition, please note the College will be hosting Digital Wellbeing for Families Workshop, run by The Resilience Project. This will be on Tuesday 21 July, 6:30-7:30pm here at the College. More details are in the flyer below and further information and details about registration will be sent out in the coming weeks. A reminder that parents have access to The Resilience Project Family Hub, please click here for details.

I strongly encourage you to engage with these resources so that we can work together to best support your sons.

Kind regards

Ms Linda Codamo

Year 7-9 Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences

The Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences for students in Years 7 to 9 will be held on Wednesday 1 July and Friday 3 July. Wednesday evening is scheduled from 3:15pm to 7:00pm and will be face-to-face meetings to accommodate those who work and Friday will take place from 9.00am to 3.30pm online. Friday is a pupil free day for all students.

Students are requested to attend with their parents as valuable feedback on their learning will be provided and their progress will be discussed. Students and parents can also use this time to ask questions, share information and receive advice about their learning.

Optimal learning performances will be achieved by students who:

  • Reflect critically on their learning goals and lead the discussion on strategies to enhance their learning.
  • Seek feedback from their teachers on ways to improve their achievement in all future assessment tasks.
  • Attend all scheduled classes and engage with the class work in every lesson.
  • Complete all assigned class work and homework and seek feedback on the quality of the work.
  • Ensure that time is spent each day on exercise and relaxation, or stress-reducing activities.

All Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences will be booked via Compass. The Compass portal will be open to make bookings on Monday 22 June at 8.00am and closes Monday 29 June at 8:00am. Reminder – Year 12 – HSC Trial Timetable & Instructions

29 May 2026

Dear Year 12 Parents/Carers

Year 12 HSC Trial Timetable

As we approach the latter half of Term 2, we enter a crucial phase in the academic journey of our Year 12 students. This period marks an important opportunity for students, families and staff to start working collaboratively in preparation for the upcoming HSC Trial Examinations.

Attached to this communication, you will find the official timetable for the HSC Trial Examinations, along with detailed instructions regarding exam procedures. We ask that students take the time to carefully review these documents and ensure they are familiar with the College’s Assessment Procedures. Adherence to these guidelines is vital to maintaining the integrity and smooth operation of the examination period.

Term 3 and the Trial HSC Examinations represent a pivotal stage in the HSC year. It is essential that students approach this time with focus, discipline and a commitment to consistent study. We strongly encourage students to establish realistic and effective study routines over the remainder of the terms as well as the holiday break, incorporating regular revision and practice to build confidence and competence in each subject area. The College will be running classes during the July holidays. A timetable of these offerings will be published closer to the holiday period.

We sincerely thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in your son’s education. Together, we can help ensure that each student is well-prepared and positioned for success in the final stages of their Higher School Certificate.

Kind regards
