Dear Parents/Carers

Whilst it is imperative we never measure the value of a young person on test scores, it would be remiss of me to not highlight how incredibly proud we are of our boys and their performance in the 2026 NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) examinations. These results indicate the strong foundations we are helping our boys to build so they can go on to do amazing things in their continuing education and also their lives beyond their education at Marist College Eastwood..

Some of the highlights include:

A message to the boys (and their families) who have done very well, congratulations. To the boys who may not be achieving the results you want to achieve yet (always have a growth mindset), the phrase “your future is shaped by the habits you repeat, not the goals you set” is a great philosophy to consider. It’s a popular quote from author James Clear (from the book Atomic Habits – a great read for everyone). Your daily routines and systems matter more than mere outcomes and are a great pathway to improving and future success. 

For the boys at Marist College Eastwood, make the little things a big deal so the big things don’t become a little deal. I’d rather be tackling issues with boys about uniforms and presentation than some of the much bigger issues we witness in the daily news. Boys get the daily habits right. Pack your school bag the night before, ensure your uniform is ready the night before, make sure homework is done when you receive it (don’t wait till the last minute), aim to always be early (to avoid the stress that comes with being late), say ‘hello’ and ‘good morning/afternoon’ to everyone.

Staff Development Day – 17 August 2026

As outlined in our College Calendar, Monday, 17 August 2026 will be a Staff Development Day. This means it will be a pupil-free day and no classes will be held for students.

Please also note that Homework Club will not operate on this day.

Students have been informed and encouraged to use this time productively – for assessment preparation, revision of key concepts, and ensuring they are up to date with the learning outcomes covered in class. This is a valuable opportunity for students to consolidate their learning in a focused and independent manner.

If you require supervision for your son on this day, we kindly ask that you complete the following google form by Thursday, 13 August 2026, so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

7-a-side Football

Our Junior and Intermediate 7-a-side football teams play up to two games each week. Our Senior team will be playing a State of Origin like 3 game series against Holy Cross Ryde.

Eisteddfod Achievement

YEAR 8 EISTEDDFOD ACHIEVEMENT 

The past few weeks have been an exciting and rewarding time for me. I recently took part in the Sydney and Ryde Eisteddfods, competing in several chamber music events with friends.

In the Sydney Eisteddfod, my friend Thomas and I were awarded Second Place in the 15 & Under Duo section. At the Ryde Eisteddfod, we were delighted to receive First Place in both the Open Unaccompanied Duet and the Piano Partnership Advanced categories.

The Piano Partnership event was one of the highlights of the Eisteddfod. It was created to bring together pianists and instrumentalists of a similar standard, creating opportunities for young musicians to meet new people and form new partnerships. I am very grateful to the Ryde Eisteddfod team for the time and effort they invested in making this event possible. After a few rehearsals during the school holidays with my new partner from Sydney Grammar, we performed the third movement of Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata. It was a wonderful experience learning to collaborate with a new musical partner.

I have also recently been accepted into the Sydney Chamber Music Institute, where I will be rehearsing with an ensemble throughout the remainder of the term in preparation for the first concert on 18 October. I am excited to work with other dedicated young musicians, learn from professional performers and continue developing my chamber music skills.

These experiences have inspired me to keep challenging myself, embrace new opportunities and enjoy every chance to make music with others.

Father’s Day Mass & Breakfast Invitation

On Friday 4 September, we will be celebrating a special Mass to honour our Fathers, Grandfathers and other significant male role models in the lives of our boys before Father’s Day. We would love you to join your son in this celebration at St Kevin’s Church Eastwood at 8.00am.

At the conclusion of the Mass, you are invited to breakfast with your son. To assist with catering please click on the registration link below by Wednesday 26 August to advise if you will be attending Mass and/or Breakfast.

Please be aware that street parking is limited around the College, so please allow time to park and walk to the Church before the start of Mass.

Reminder – Year 11 – Examination Timetable & Exam Instructions

Dear Year 11 Parents/Carers

Year 11 Examination Timetable

As we approach the Year 11 Final Examination block, commencing in Week 6 of Term 3, students enter a significant stage of their academic journey. These examinations provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate the depth of their learning and reflect their readiness for the transition into their HSC year in Term 4.

Links for the Year 11 Examination Timetable along with key information regarding examination procedures and expectations. We ask that both parents and students review these documents thoroughly to ensure familiarity with the College’s assessment policies. Adherence to these guidelines is essential for maintaining the integrity and smooth operation of the examination period. Please also note that Year 11 students will be given exam privileges and thus, are only required to be on school grounds for scheduled exams. However, this privilege can be revoked if behaviour and application are not to the high standards expected of a senior Marist Eastwood student.  

This assessment phase allows students to consolidate their knowledge and conclude Year 11 with confidence. We encourage the development of consistent and realistic study habits in the lead-up to the examinations, including targeted revision, practice tasks, and subject-specific goal setting. Students will also have access to the Alumni tutoring program and support offered in the Library after school.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your son’s education. With focused preparation and commitment, students will be well-equipped to approach these final assessments and begin their HSC year with purpose and confidence.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: Year 10 Work Experience Paperwork

Parents and students, please note that all completed Work Experience paperwork (Student Placement Record and Risk Assessment form) is strictly due by Monday, 24 August 2026 (Week 6). Timely submission is essential to ensure placement approvals are processed smoothly.

Action Required:

  1. Secure Placement: Finalise your employer arrangements.
  2. Complete Paperwork: Ensure the Student Placement Record (SPR) (including Section 3 by the employer) and Risk Assessment form are fully completed.
  3. Submit for Review: Submit your documents to Mr. Nguyen (via email or in-person).
  4. Finalise: Upload your completed documents to the designated Google Form.

Career Pathways & Job Spotlights

Pathways into Dentistry

Dentistry is one of the most competitive tertiary entry fields in Australia, requiring early preparation and a clear strategy.

  • What Dentists Do: Perform check-ups, treat decay, fit fillings, manage gum health and advise on oral care. Practitioners work in private practices, public hospitals, community health centers, defense forces and research.

  • High School Subject Focus: Chemistry and biology are critical for human anatomy and pharmacology. Mathematics and physics support calculations and imaging technology, while clear written and spoken English is essential for clinical notes and patient care.

  • Key Non-Academic Skills: Manual dexterity and fine motor skills are vital for delicate clinical work. Strong communication, critical thinking, problem-solving and physical stamina are equally important.

  • Undergraduate vs Graduate Entry:

    • Undergraduate (5 years): Available directly from high school at Charles Sturt University, Griffith University, James Cook University, La Trobe University, University of Adelaide and University of Queensland. Selection relies on high ATARs and strong UCAT scores.

    • Graduate Entry (3.5–4 years): Completed after an initial bachelor’s degree at University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, UWA and University of Queensland (GAMSAT & GPA required).

  • Backup Pathways: Completing a Bachelor of Oral Health (qualifying as a dental hygienist or oral health therapist) builds hands-on clinical experience while opening doors to transfer or postgraduate dentistry applications later.

Job Spotlight: Community Liaison Officer

Community Liaison Officers bridge the gap between development teams (such as major infrastructure projects or local councils) and affected local communities.

  • Core Responsibilities: Develop engagement strategies, host town halls, record community feedback, resolve complaints and write stakeholder reports.

  • Key Skills: Active listening, conflict resolution, approachable demeanour, written reporting and relationship building.

  • Entry Routes: Degrees in communications, urban planning, social work, or project management provide strong foundations. Volunteering with community groups or gaining local council experience is highly valued by employers.

Balancing Part-Time Employment & Schoolwork

Holding a part-time job builds fantastic workplace skills, but keeping it from overwhelming study requires clear boundaries:

  • Communicate Roster Needs Early: Inform employers weeks in advance regarding major assessment blocks or exam periods so shift rosters can be scaled back.

  • Lock in Study Blocks: Treat study sessions as fixed commitments on your calendar with set start and end times, exactly like a rostered work shift.

  • Recognise Burnout Signs: Consistently rushing assignments at the last minute or feeling fatigued during class are clear indicators that work hours need to be trimmed.

  • Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) Scholarship: Valued at $15,000 per year plus mentoring for students entering mining/engineering fields. (Opens 27 July 2026, closes 4 September 2026).

Reminder – Anti Bullying Information and Survey to Parents

Dear Parents/Carers,

At Marist Eastwood, the wellbeing and safety of every student remain our highest priorities.
As part of our ongoing commitment to fostering a safe, respectful and inclusive learning
environment, we continually review student wellbeing data and school practices.

Recent school data has indicated an increase in moderate incidents of bullying. While the
majority of our students continue to demonstrate the Marist values of respect, compassion
and responsibility, this emerging trend highlights the need for renewed focus and proactive
action across our community.

In response, Marist Eastwood aligned with Sydney Catholic Schools is strengthening its
approach to bullying prevention and intervention. This work aligns closely with the
findings of the Australian Government’s Anti-Bullying Rapid Review, which called for a
national reset in how schools prevent, identify and respond to bullying behaviours. The
review emphasises the importance of consistent procedures, early intervention, staff
capability building, and strong partnerships between schools and families.

As part of this commitment, staff will participate in professional learning workshops
throughout this term facilitated by Free to Be Resources. These workshops will focus on:

● Recognising subtle forms of bullying behaviours that can go unnoticed in the
classrooms.
● Language that interrupts behaviour without escalating conflict
● Strategies to hold behavior accountable while maintaining the integrity
● Practical proactive strategies strategies to reduce opportunities for bullying to occur
● Ensuring all staff have a shared understanding of school expectations and reporting
procedures.

In addition, students in Year 8 will be participating in a student workshop “The Social
Compass”, and a parent workshop for year 8 parents to build on this information will also
take place, facilitated by Free to Be Resources. More information will be provided to year 8
parents in a separate letter.

As well as this and along with Sydney Catholic Schools we will continue reviewing our
anti-bullying policies and practices to ensure they reflect current research, best practice,
and the recommendations outlined in the national review. As such we invite parents to
complete this survey. This survey will provide the College with additional information to
support our steps moving forward.

We recognise that addressing bullying is a shared responsibility between schools, students
and families. We encourage parents and caregivers to maintain open conversations with
their children about respectful relationships, kindness, and the importance of reporting
concerns when they arise.

Should you have any concerns regarding your child’s wellbeing or experiences at school,
please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Leader of Wellbeing.

Together, we can ensure that Marist Eastwood remains a community where every student
feels safe, valued, respected and supported to flourish.
