Week 2 Term 4

23 October 2026

Dear Parents/Carers

When your son sits down to complete his homework, he isn’t simply finishing a daily task, he is actively rewiring his brain. For all students and boys in particular, learning new concepts requires moving information through distinct cognitive stages and designated homework can play a vital role in this progression.

During a lesson, new information enters a student’s working memory. Working memory acts like a temporary storage drive. A temporary storage drive can have limited space and holds information only for a short period of time. Boys often experience cognitive overload quickly when juggling new information, subjects’ specific terminology, or formulas. If this information isn’t reinforced soon after, a large percentage of it can be lost within 24 hours.

This is where homework acts as a powerful educational bridge. By providing structured, spaced repetition, homework forces the brain to revisit neural pathways established during the school day.

Through this repeated exposure, information transitions from short-term working memory into long-term memory. In long-term storage, concepts are organised into strong and reliable mental networks (schemata).

The ultimate goal of this process is automatic recall (i.e the ability to access facts, routines and rules effortlessly without consuming conscious mental energy). When basic skills become automatic through practice, boys free up valuable working memory capacity to solve challenging problems, write more complex essays and engage in critical thinking.

And if for some reason your son is not given explicit directions regarding homework or he believes he has no homework, reading over class notes and repeating tasks delivered during the school day will serve the same purpose. Hence my position for all boys is that “there is no such thing as no homework”.

All Souls Day

23 October 2026

Dear Parents/Carers

November is traditionally the month in which the Church remembers the dead, and in a special way we are invited to remember our family, friends and loved ones who have died, especially those who have passed in the last twelve months.

The Month of Remembrance commences on 1 November with All Saints Day. This is then followed on 2 November by All Souls Day, where we remember and pray for the dead. To commemorate this day, staff and students are invited to come together in St Kevin’s Church at lunchtime (1.15-1.45pm) to pray for the souls of loved ones who have passed.

You are welcome to join us in the church to pray at this time. If you are unable to make it, you can also fill in the name of a deceased loved one using this link and we will remember them during our Rosary.

Please contact me at colm.mccaughan@syd.catholic.edu.au if you have any questions.

Sincerely

Mr Colm McCaughan
Religious Education Coordinator

Careers Spotlights & Advice Articles

Understanding Course Entry Terminology

When researching university options, it is helpful to understand the distinction between common course entry terms:

  • Prerequisite: A specific school subject that must be completed to be eligible for entry.
  • Entry Requirements: The total set of requirements needed for admission (e.g., minimum ATAR, prerequisites, portfolio, or audition).
  • Assumed Knowledge: Subjects the course assumes you understand. You can still gain admission without them, but introductory units will build directly on that knowledge base.
  • Recommended Studies: Optional subjects that provide helpful background knowledge for the degree.

Job Spotlight: Logistics Manager

  • Role Summary: Logistics Managers coordinate the storage, movement and distribution of goods and materials across supply chains.
  • Key Skills: Analytical thinking, problem-solving, team coordination, organisation and communication.
  • Pathways: Senior school focus on mathematics and business studies; tertiary study via diplomas or degrees in logistics, supply chain management, or general business; or starting in entry-level warehouse and dispatch administration roles.

Reminder – Wearing Hats

16 October 2026

Dear Parents/Carers,

As we move into warmer weather and high UV index days, we want to ensure all our students stay safe, healthy, and energised while enjoying their breaks. Ensuring sun safety is paramount and we are writing to request your support in reinforcing the importance of wearing hats during active outdoor play.

While high school students are growing more independent, the risks associated with sun exposure and UV radiation remain significant. During recess, lunch and outdoor physical activities, students spend a substantial amount of time in direct sunlight.

To protect our students, students who do not bring or wear a hat will be directed to designated shaded areas for passive recreation during breaks and will be unable to participate in active play, games or sports.

We kindly ask that you check in with your child before they leave for school each morning to ensure they have their school hat packed in their bag. Labelling the hat with your child’s full name will also help prevent loss. Alternatively, if your son has lost their school hat that another is purchased.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our students safe, healthy and active throughout the school year. If you have any questions regarding sun safety or uniform guidelines, please feel free to reach out to your son’s Leader of Wellbeing.

Kind regards,

Ms Linda Codamo
Director of Wellbeing
