{"id":8392,"date":"2025-11-12T00:07:05","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T00:07:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebuzz.net.au\/fortstreet\/?post_type=article&#038;p=8392"},"modified":"2025-11-12T00:07:05","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T00:07:05","slug":"balkanology-wins-again","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.thebuzz.net.au\/fortstreet\/article\/balkanology-wins-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Balkanology Wins Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\" data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Recently, I and the members of my recorder quartet (Owen Druery, Hugo Newman, and Henry Shannon) were excited to hear that we won an international recorder competition run by the Early Music Shop in England, and await the delivery of our prize, 3 quality pearwood recorders worth over $2000.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">This quartet was formed for my HSC Music Extension ensemble piece, and we\u2019ve spent a year rehearsing the fiendishly difficult and entrancing\u00a0<i>Balkanology<\/i>\u00a0by Jan Rokyta. As well as being part of my Encore-nominated HSC Music program, we\u2019ve performed at the recent Year 12 Graduation, the Echos in the Nave concert in June, and in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall as a part of the Festival of Instrumental Music. Our performance of\u00a0<i>Balkanology<\/i>\u00a0also won us $200, the Woodwind Prize, in Musica Viva\u2019s\u00a0<i>Strike a Chord\u00a0<\/i>competition which has been put towards purchasing a bass recorder for Fort Street\u2019s Recorder Consort.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">At very few schools could you take a university final recital level piece to a recorder consort you formed and have their reactions be \u201cWow\u2026 we better get practicing!\u201d\u00a0It\u2019s been a pleasure working with Owen, Hugo, and Henry to rehearse and perform this piece, and I wanted to thank them for the hours they\u2019ve put into this (now twice competition-winning)\u00a0quartet.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Kit White<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I and the members of my recorder quartet (Owen Druery, Hugo Newman, and Henry Shannon) were excited to hear that we won an international recorder competition run by the Early Music Shop in England, and await the delivery of our prize, 3 quality pearwood recorders worth over $2000.
