Principal’s Report

Principal’s Report

Dear Fortians, Parents and Carers,

We find ourselves at the end of another term at Fort Street. Congratulations to our students for showing resilience and striving to achieve their best this term. Thank you to all our wonderful staff for their hard work and their dedication to our students. Although we continue to operate with some restrictions in place, we have enjoyed a settled term 3 with most activities continuing, even if slightly modified.
The Department of Education will release new COVID-19 guidelines at the beginning of next term. The term 4 guidelines will include information about the protocols schools will need to follow to ensure teaching and learning activities and end of year celebrations are conducted in a safe manner. As soon as we know what restrictions will be in place for Term 4, we will release dates and information about Term 4 events.

Congratulations
2020 HSC Encore Nominations were announced on the last day of term. A huge congratulations to our talented musicians – Jamie Kwon (Yr 12), Emily Miers (Yr 12), Max Tosello (Yr 12) and Jaden White (Yr 12) for their nominations.
The 2020 Minister’s and Secretary’s Awards for Excellence have also just been released. Congratulations to Bridget Gard (Yr 12) and Anson Lee (Yr 12) – due to COVID-19 the annual ceremony held at Town Hall in which these awards are usually presented was unable to take place. This does not diminish the quality or significance of these awards. Both Bridget and Anson were recipients this year of the Minister’s Award for excellence in Student Achievement recognising that they have both excelled in their secondary years across academic excellence, sports, cultural and community leadership.

World’s Greatest Shave – despite all the restrictions Year 12 persevered with this event and raised an impressive $22 728.22 for the Leukaemia Foundation.

RSPCA NSW – Year 11 also enjoyed there day of fund raising recently raising over $400 to help the RSPCA keep animals who end up on their doorstep warm, fed, entertained, content and in many cases providing them with life-saving treatments they require.

Year 11
Year 11 students have completed their final exams and will hopefully be able to enjoy a truly restful break these holidays before officially commencing Year 12 courses in term 4. I would like to sincerely thank the executive members of the SRC for their leadership throughout this difficult year. They have remained dedicated and enthusiastic despite almost every event they had looked forward to planning and executing being cancelled – many thanks to Eleanor McLeod, Meg Raven, Tom Cannane, Ava Corey, Jennifer Dang, Oscar Iwas, Jordan Mai and Martin Vu.

Year 12 Farewell
On Friday 25 September Year 12 had their final farewell assembly to the school. The morning began with a Year 12 student and teacher’s brunch in the Fountain Quad with individually packed brunch bags containing either pastries, yoghurt and fruit or banh mi and fruit (pork, chicken and vegetarian). The assembly which followed was livestreamed to the rest of the school during periods 3 and 4 with all the traditional speeches and FLOP videos. Eventually, with many tears of joy and sadness Year 12 made their way out of the old school gates on Fort Street.

Year 12 Graduation
This will take place in the school hall on the evening of Thursday 12 September. Invitations will be sent to year 12 and their families next term. We are still waiting on specific guidelines around how many guests each student will be able to invite and there will be further details provided closer to the event around registering attendance of both students and guests.

HSC student advice
We know our students and staff have worked hard for the HSC. The safety of our students and staff remains of utmost importance. This year extra arrangements are in place to ensure that any disruption due to COVID-19 will have minimal impact on HSC exams.
Our school has put in place a number of contingencies to help ensure exams run as smoothly as possible. Part of this planning includes keeping exam cohorts to under 75 students. To implement this guideline we will require additional examination spaces this year for 4 of our larger exams. For this reason the library and school gym will be closed to all students and staff on four occasions early in the HSC examination period – in week 2, Tuesday 20 October and Wednesday 21 October and in week 3, Monday 26 October (before lunch only) and Friday 30 October (from lunch onwards).
The exams have been scheduled and our school has arrangements in place for exams to proceed as planned. It is important that students review their timetable and plan well so they turn up for their exams on time, healthy and rested.
Any student with a pre-existing condition, that presents similarly to flu-like symptoms, should be planning now and speak to their doctor/GP. The GP can provide a medical certificate ahead of the exams to ensure they are not sent home.
If on the day of the exam your child feels unwell with flu-like symptoms, they should stay home and get tested. HSC students are prioritised for COVID-19 test results.

It’s important to note that all students will be asked if they are well before entering exam rooms.
We want all our students to sit their exams but sometimes things happen. If your child is unwell and misses their exam, contact the school. Students who are unwell will be eligible for the illness and misadventure provision with NESA.
If there are any changes to exam arrangements we will communicate with HSC students through their Department email addresses. This will be the only source of communication for these types of notifications. If in doubt, please call the school.
We wish all our students well in the upcoming exams.

World’s Greatest Shave

World’s Greatest Shave

Every day another 47 Australians are diagnosed with a blood cancer; so now, more than ever your donations mean so much to families struggling with a blood cancer diagnosis.

The Year 12 Charity Committee’s World’s Greatest Shave Day was held on Monday of Week 10 in support of the Leukaemia Foundation. The day was a success with over $1,000 raised and saw Mr Prasad, Mr Morrison, Mr Pawley, and Mr Longfield shave, as well as many teachers sprout some colourful hair.

The Shave Day was initially positioned to take place Week 10 Term 1, however with the advent of COVID-19, it was postponed by two terms. Despite the logistical restructuring due to the pandemic, the day was a success. I would like to thank Ms Cameron for supporting the event’s new incarnation, as well as all the teachers who have bravely chosen to shave or dye their hair.

Our goal of $30,000 is yet to be reached and at $30,000, Ms Arcamone will shave her head. That means we are only $7,000 away from seeing a BALD MS ARCAMONE!

If you want to see Ms Arcamone’s luscious locks shaved off:

Every cent provides crucial assistance. I know these are tough times, but imagine the trials facing families who are enduring a life-altering cancer diagnosis.

You can find further information about blood cancer here

For your pleasure, see a *professionally* photoshopped picture of a bald Ms Arcamone below – may it inspire your spirit!

Thank you for supporting the Leukaemia Foundation,

Year 10 Engineering

Year 10 Engineering

Year 10 Engineering students recently studied the impact of energy use on global climate change and the energy efficiency of different kinds of lighting technologies.
Students designed and constructed task lamps using LED technology.

Some of the high quality materials used combine the warmth of natural timber with aluminium or laser-cut acrylic and plywood providing professional solutions of commercial quality.

Year 9 Commerce Financial Journalism

Year 9 Commerce Financial Journalism

Year 9 Commerce have studied how to be an effective consumer, marketing, economics and investing topics so far this year. To apply these concepts, students have written pieces of financial journalism recommending investors buy, hold or sell their shares based on their analysis of the impact of economic events and management decisions on the companies’ share prices.
Here are some examples of the students’ work. Of course, no responsibility is taken for anyone’s decision to act on this investment advice!

German Fashion Parade

German Fashion Parade

The Year 8 German class recently finished a unit of work about clothes and fashion. To show off their German skills and their unique style, the class held a fashion parade. Each student strutted down the runway while a friend read out a description of their fabulous outfit.
There were wigs, pyjamas and even a Schneewittchen (Snow White), but whatever their style, all students had a lot of fun.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards

Duke of Ed news

We are so excited that the Department of Education’s Term 4 COVID-19 guidance allows overnight excursions to go ahead, subject to preparation of a suitable plan. Yay!!!

We are going to attempt to run the Bronze expedition (with the grade split in two to allow more social distancing at camp), two Silver expeditions and a Gold practice expedition during the term. We are considering a Bronze expedition camping at Cockatoo Island combined with some harbourside walks, two Silver expeditions at the Royal National Park and the Great North Walk and a Gold Practice expedition at the Royal National Park. We are gathering expressions of interest from Silver/Gold participants and will then be able to make bookings and confirm dates.

If we can get a booking at Cockatoo Island, then year 9 students will be provided with a tent and a sleeping mat, but will need to carry their sleeping bag for the two days using their own backpack. Silver and Gold participants will need to provide all their own food and equipment, including tents, stoves and suitable backpacks. The Term 4 COVID-19 guidance does not include any restrictions on transport, so use of public transport for the Silver/Gold expeditions could make these events considerably cheaper than the day hikes that we had previously been hoping to run.

Fort St now has the biggest participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program of all public schools in NSW, and are the third biggest Award Centre in NSW after Scots and Kings. In 2019, 90 Fort St students completed their Bronze award, 29 people finished Silver and the Gold award was completed by Fortians Nicholas Mok, Danny Mai and Jamie Kwon.

So far this year, 139 year 9 students have logged at least one hour on their Bronze award, and the year group as a whole has logged over 35% of the total hours required for all year 9 students to achieve their Bronze awards. 76 year 10 students have registered for their Silver award. 27 year 11 and 6 year 12 students are active participants in the Gold award program. We have awarded 26 Silver and 66 Bronze awards to date in 2020 and are immensely proud of Dhuvaraha Baheerathan, Edmund Derwent, Emily Grimes, Aidan Limnios and Carmen Wen who have completed their Gold awards at Fort St in 2020.

It has been challenging for a lot of students to continue participating in their Award as some normal activities are still shut, and there are continued restrictions on some sports and arts groups. But it’s been wonderful to see how adaptable many Fortians are, and how you have been able to come up with new interesting activities to meet your goals.

We are looking forward to seeing lots of Fortians achieve their Duke of Ed awards in term 4!

Calligraphy Club

Calligraphy Club

The Calligraphy Club runs every Friday lunchtime in the library, run by the wonderful Ms Arcamone. Learning calligraphy not only allows you to develop calligraphy penmanship but also express yourself in a unique medium.  Along with the skills offered by Calligraphy Club, we also design signage for school events, such as our most recent project for Wear It Purple Day.

With the assistive guidance of Ms Arcamone, you will see your calligraphic skills flourish at an astounding rate whilst learning in a social and enjoyable environment. Calligraphy Club is also a relaxing period rendering it as a perfect end-of-week activity to take your mind off school work and de-stress. Whether you want to create aesthetically pleasing birthday cards, impress your friends, inscribe elegantly written passive-aggressive comments or simply grasp a new skill, please join us in the library every Friday lunchtime (all year groups are welcome). We look forward to seeing you there!

Welcome to New P&C Executive Member and Uniform Shop Representative

A very warm welcome to both Tania Koit who was elected to the P&C Executive at September meeting and to Teresa Matthews who is our new Uniform Shop Representative. It is energising to have Year 7 families getting involved with the P&C and we continue to encourage participation from parents and carers from all years.

Entertainment Book

You can support Fort Street High School P&C by purchasing the Entertainment e-book. The e-book can save you money when dining out, movies, car hire, hotels and much more. It’s also a great gift to give to someone for birthdays and Christmas presents. See this flyer for more information or go to https://www.entertainment.com.au/orderbooks/2d03327

Uniform Shop

From the beginning of Term 4, the Uniform Shop will open within Covid-19 safety guidelines. Purchases should still be completed online at www.quickcliq.com.au and deliveries will continue in class, however students will be able to return items to the uniform shop. Only one student will be permitted at a time in the uniform shop and must sanitise their hands on entry to the uniform shop. No cash will be accepted at the uniform shop. See https://www.fortstreet.nsw.edu.au/enrolment/uniform-shop/ from beginning of term four for latest updates.

P&C Next Meeting

The P&C has adapted well to online meetings and we would encourage parents and carers to attend the next zoom meeting on October 14th and learn more about what the P&C does and how you can get involved. The zoom link will be sent out from the school.

You may remember that in 2019 the IMP recorded our End of Year Concert. The DVD from this recording is currently being pressed, and will be available for sale at the start of Term 4. Keep an eye on your emails for more information.

With the loss of our live concert fundraising income in 2020, this DVD will be a major fundraiser for the year. Please make sure you get behind your IMP, and buy copies for all of your friends and relatives.

Arts Unit 2021 Applications NOW OPEN

Create NSW Grant
The IMP was very fortunate to be awarded a Create NSW grant to aid in setting up for digital delivery of concerts. Thanks to the IMP committee for spearheading the grant application. We now own the equipment we need to produce our own online concerts and performance opportunities.
