Year 7 at the Ron Horan Museum

Year 7 at the Ron Horan Museum

The Year 7 students have been lucky enough to visit the Ron Horan Museum at school as part of their Fortunate class.

The museum has wonderful items from across the history of Fort Street High school as well as dedicated displays on past Fort Street High School students and the impact they’ve had in the community.

We are hoping to open the museum to the rest of the school soon.

Principal’s Report

Principal’s Report

Dear Fortians, Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to the beginning of another exciting year at Fort Street High School. A big welcome to our new families and a special welcome to our Year 7 students.

I would also like to welcome our new staff:
Mr Moon – Mathematics Teacher
Ms Catalan – Technology Teacher (to commence shortly)
Alissa Tan – Learning Centre Teacher (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday)
Ms Christie – School Counsellor (Wednesday and Thursday)
Katie Mann – Student Support Officer (Wednesday and Friday)
Kate Jenns – Student Learning Support Officer (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday)

FSHS Anti-Bullying Policy
This policy has now been updated and can be found in Sentral Portal Documents under School Policies and Procedures. This has been discussed at stage assemblies with all year groups and staff have undergone PL in relation to the new policy. Bullying in any form will not be tolerated in our school community and will be treated seriously. Students are encouraged to report incidents of bullying to any member of staff they feel comfortable speaking with. Some suggestions would be – Year Advisers or Assistant Year Advisers, classroom teachers, learning centre staff, school counsellor, student support officer, Deputy Principals or any member of the non-teaching staff.

Speech Day 2022
Due to COVID restrictions around parents and visitors and the current requirement for cohorting, we have had to cancel Speech Day this year. Prizes and awards from 2021 will be given to students in Years 8-12 at dedicated assemblies to be held throughout the day this Friday. A special event for last year’s Year 12 Fortians will be held off site at Petersham Town Hall on Wednesday 23 February. Award recipients will be able to extend an invitation to two guests to this event.

Special Religious Education (SRE) and Ethics Education (SEE)
SRE commenced last week for students in Years 7-10. SEE classes also commenced last week for Year 7 students however, Year 8 SEE classes will not commence until Thursday 17 March (TBC), due to a shortage of trained ethics teachers at the moment. SRE and SEE classes take place on Thursday morning from 9am to 9:40am. If students have opted into either of these classes, it is now appearing on their Sentral timetable. Parents/carers who believe their child has been enrolled in the wrong class should contact Joel Morrison, Deputy Principal.
Year 7 students not enrolled in SRE or SEE will be supervised in quiet study/reading in the library during the SRE/SEE timeslot. Students in Years 8-10 not enrolled in SRE or SEE begin school at 9.40am on Thursdays. Students in Years 8-10 who need to be at school earlier than 9.40am should go to the library to be supervised by staff.

COVID-smart measures at school
A combination of layered safety measures – vaccinations, masks, cohorting, physical distancing, ventilation, rapid antigen testing (RAT), hygiene and cleaning – allows us to prioritise student and staff wellbeing while keeping the school operational.

Last week students received 4 RATs to take home with the intention that two a week will be used in weeks 4 and 5 at home before school.

Cohorting at Fort Street consists of staggered starts and finishes to avoid congestion at Petersham Station. Currently Years 7, 8 and 9 commence at 8:45am every day (except Thursday) and finish 15 minutes early being dismissed at 3:00pm. Years 10, 11 and 12 commence at 9:00am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and finish at the regular time of 3:15pm. Cohorting also extends to the playground which means that unfortunately students are restricted at the moment in terms of where they can spend recess and lunch.

Year 7 – students can spend recess and lunch either in the Fountain Quad or the Library
Year 8 and 9 – recess on the oval, basketball courts, futsal courts, cricket nets and volleyball courts. Lunch in the Upper and Lower Kilgour Quads
Year 10 and 11 – recess in the Upper and Lower Kilgour Quads and lunch on the oval, basketball courts, futsal courts, cricket nets and volleyball courts. Year 11 also have access to the library at recess and lunch.
Year 12 – recess and lunch in the Rowe Quad – new covered outdoor learning area or the library.

SRC Report

SRC Report

Dear Fort Street Community,

Although many of us have hoped for a return to school under different circumstances, the SRC is nonetheless continuing to boost school spirit and provide opportunities for the students.

Clubs and Committees Day

On Wednesday the 2nd of February, the SRC hosted a Clubs and Committees Day which is an event that introduces all the different clubs, committees and extracurricular activities around our school. On the day of the event, clubs and committee leaders (or nominated representatives) had the opportunity to host a stall specifically for their club. Students were invited to the hall to browse the vast number of extra-curricular groups, with groups from both within and exterior to Fort Street. This year, we had a total of 22 clubs/committees that signed up and hosted their own stalls for the event. Overall, the day was a huge success, with many expressions of interests from students and overwhelmingly positive feedback from students, staff and committees.

SRC Rose Drive

The annual SRC Rose Drive, a Valentine’s Day event, is upcoming on the 25th of February. Students will be able to purchase roses for their friends, teachers or special someone, from Thursday Week 3 (10th of February) until Thursday Week 5 (24th of February). Roses are $2 each or 8 for $15. All profits go to the SRC, to improve the school! These roses will be distributed during the last 15 minutes of period 2, Friday Week 5. In order to sell these in a safe manner we have decided to split the cohorts between two selling points, as follows:

Year 7 – Staff Common Room during all recess times

Year 8 and 9 – Old Uniform Shop during all lunchtimes

Year 10 and 11 – Old Uniform shop during all recess times

Year 12 – Staff common room during all lunchtimes

All hearts need to clearly state the full name and class of the recipient, and must be returned by the Thursday Week 5, 24th of February.

SRC Instagram

The SRC Instagram Page is a great way to stay updated with school business. We have changed our Instagram username to @fshssrc, so please give us a follow! The SRC are very active on that account and would love to reach more of the school community.

If you have any feedback or ideas on school related business, we would love to hear from you! Feel free to contact your SRC via email (srcfshs@gmail.com), Instagram (@fshssrc) or simply talk to one of our friendly SRC members.

Stay safe!

Alyssa Khaw (she/her)

Amnesty and Environment groups

Amnesty and Environment groups

The Amnesty group began the year resoundingly on Thursday with a call to the nation’s leaders not to proceed with the Religious Discrimination bill. The importance of the occasion was marked by a visit from Ms McMurray and a number of other staff members, who were keen to support our gender-diverse students and stress the need for equity and respectful communication in all contexts. Students and staff wrote emails to senators, adding their personal messages to guidelines provided by Amnesty Australia, and some went on to phone parliamentarians with their request.
The Amnesty and Environment groups will be meeting on alternate Thursdays in the Lecture Theatre at lunchtime this year, learning about human rights, environmental issues and the legal frameworks in which these can be addressed through citizen democracy. We will also engage in advocacy, and in project work within the school and community. Student leaders will work closely with teachers Jenny Xu and Elizabeth Maddox and the large number of new members who have joined us this year.
Fort Street Swimming Carnival 2022

Fort Street Swimming Carnival 2022

On Monday 7th February, the annual FSHS Swimming Carnival was held at Ashfield Swimming Pool. The day was a great success with students across all year levels competing in a range of events. The day got off to a slow start, as rain delayed the start of the first event. However, a minor detail such as the weather, was not going to dampen the famous Fort Street spirit. We pushed on and after the first couple of events the sun came out.
The student body should be commended on their excellent participation and effort in the pool, as well as their exemplary behaviour in the stands. With some great individual performances throughout the day and some brilliant mixed relays to finish the carnival, the day went off without a hitch.

With the school’s new House System to be implemented in the very near future, the students were split into their original year 7 homeroom groupings for the carnival. This made for an interesting mix and when the dust settled at the end of the day, there was a very close finish for first and second in house points. Congratulations to the temporary ‘O-House’ for coming out on top. Congratulations also to the following students, who put in a consistently high effort throughout the day and walked away as age group champions:

House Points:
1st: O – 288
2nd: T – 272
3rd: R – 255
4th : F – 219
5th: I – 119

12 Boys: Charlie Shao
13 Boys: Henry Wakeling
14 Boys: Ray Guo
15 Boys: Erick Zhang
16 Boys: Alex Howdin
17+ Boys: Kosta Giitsidis

12 Girls: Aoibhe Carty
13 Girls: Niki Lloyd
14 Girls: Joyce Chen
15 Girls: Daniela Guzina
16 Girls: Jasmine Loh
17+ Girls: Soraya Newlyn

The students who finished either first or second overall in each event will go on to represent the school at the Zone Swimming Carnival on 28th February (more information will be provided to these students in the coming days).

Thank you to You Wei Chung from Year 11, for documenting the event with his camera and taking some great shots! Thank you as well to all the staff for their assistance with making the carnival happen.

Matilda – cancelled

Matilda – cancelled

It is with great regret that we have had to cancel Matilda.  This is a huge disappointment to everyone concerned but we are looking forward instead to the Senior Drama Performance later this year.

Thank you to everyone in the school community who supported this project and especially to the students who displayed such energy , enthusiasm and commitment.
