The Value of a Humanities and Social Studies Program at a Christian School

A strong Humanities and Social Sciences program at a Christian school is not just about learning historical and geographical facts or analysing political cartoons and data. It’s about shaping students into well-rounded, thoughtful individuals who can engage with the world from a faith-informed perspective. By blending academic rigor with biblical principles, these programs help students develop a deeper understanding of human nature, society, and their role as caretakers and stewards of God’s creation.

In FCC’s Humanities curriculum, students engage with a wide range of subjects, including history, politics, and economics, all through the lens of Christian values. They explore key historical events and figures, not just as isolated facts, but in relation to the ways God has been at work throughout history. After all history is His story. Biblical teachings are integrated into discussions about justice, morality, and the common good, helping students see how Christian principles have shaped (and continue to shape) societies around the world.

Geography is also a key component of the Humanities program, where students are exposed to the wonders of the created world, the processes that affect our world and environment, as well as the various people groups and cultures that exist across the face of our blue planet. They will also be exposed to the various world views and ideas about the environment that are held by people groups around the globe. Through the lens of faith, students can evaluate these ideas and worldviews critically, discerning the virtues and flaws of human nature, as well as seeing how God’s truth might be reflected, or distorted, in different narratives.
