Science Week Adventures in Primary School

Science Week Adventures in Primary School

On 22 May our Primary School celebrated Science Week by dressing up as something Science!

Students and Teacher wore costumes “anything science” featuring Scientists, Crazy Professors, Doctors, Nurses, Veterinarians, Science Experiments, DNA, Bejamin Franklin, Geologists… The list goes on and the creativity both in costumes and in the classroom, activities showed us that WE LOVE SCIENCE!!

Each Primary class created a wonderful display or experiment, and classes were able to visit each class and spend time enjoying what had been created.

We were so grateful and proud of how our amazing parents helped students create their costumes – what a wonderful learning experience for us all! Thank you!

Year 11 Camp – Highlights by Mrs Johnston

Year 11 Camp – Highlights by Mrs Johnston

Mrs Johnston, Mrs Burnley, Mr Holdsworth, Dr Williams were the staff blessed to take our Year 11s on their annual camp which took place on the last three days of term 2. This year the crew stayed at Busselton Baptist campsite.

Students were kept busy with visits to the Crooked Carrot, Busselton Jetty, Observatory, campsite, foxholes, Ngilli caves in Yallingup, mini golf Busselton, campsite, spoons and games at night, cleaning/packing up, forest adventures for archery and zipline/climbing/obstacle course.

We had amazing food – nachos/chicken schnitzels/pancakes/bacon and eggs and make your own rolls for lunches! Our Year 11s are a pretty chilled well-behaved group which made for a great time of bonding and enjoying God’s creation.

The weather was cold but sunny on the first day. Raining and windy on the second day but stopped when we needed to do our activities. Praise God!

Year 3 Strings

Year 3 Strings

Our entire Year 3 cohort participate in our Strings Program.

Each Year 3 class had their first live performance in front of their peers in preparation for their end of year performance for their families.

This is our 3rd year of having the Strings Program and we can see students learning more and more in shorter spaces of time. We might just have our own orchestra soon!

Special thanks to our Music Team who helped prepare our students for this special event.

Secondary Worship and Christian Living

Secondary Worship and Christian Living

Mrs Kennedy has been leading Christian Living Sessions at the College this year and ministering and guiding each year group as a whole on a weekly basis.

Coupled with the amazing worship assemblies our Secondary Students have been attending, we are being so blessed to see our students worshipping God and seeing many hearts turned to the Lord because students are having a greater understanding of His love for them. We are also encouraged by the number of students willing to serve and lead the worship with Chaplain Mitch.

This is a wonderful gift to our students and is another way that we partner with families to nurture our student’s faith journey. We are excited to see this ministry bear much fruit!

KABOOM! Music Incursion @ FCC

Our Music Team invited Kaboom Percussion to conduct an incursion at the college during Term 2. They performed 2 shows, one for Primary and one for Secondary and captivated students for each of the one-hour sessions!

They showed off the different percussion instruments they had made, all from recyclable materials, including a chair, bottles, pipes, and even a squeaky toy chicken!

Not only was the incursion entertaining but gave students inspiration on how the most everyday items can make interesting sounds for percussion, a must for Music!

NAIDOC Assembly

NAIDOC Assembly

NAIDOC week was celebrated a week early and students took part in activities such as damper making, Indigenous Art and storytelling, and the week finished with our NAIDOC Assembly.

The theme for this year was “Keep the fire burning” and Mr Stanway spoke to us about how important community is to the Indigenous people. It is through community children learn from their elders, the elders make decisions on behalf of their community and any new ideas must be endorsed by the elders before being adopted into the village. By children learning from their elders, the fire of community will keep burning.

Mr Stanway explained how the Bible also tells of the importance of living and learning in our Christian community and that the Holy Spirit was represented as fire on the day of Pentecost.

He went on to remind us that our College is a wonderful community with amazing families, and we are all very passionate about teaching our children the values God wants our children to learn.

Our Unity Banner which was created in 2018, was also on display, and features the scripture from Romans 12:5: “So we, being many, are one body in Christ and individually members of one another.” A reminder that while we are individuals, we are one in Christ.

Primary Worship

Primary Worship

Primary Worship is held fortnightly, and it is very special to see the students (accompanied by Mr King and Miss Botrous) lead the worship songs both vocally and playing instruments.

Each fortnight is a virtue theme and one student from each Primary class in nominated for showing that virtue. Pictured below are students who received their virtue certificate for the virtue of Compassion.

Market Day – end of term Celebration!

Market Day – end of term Celebration!

Congratulations to our Year 9 and 10 HASS Students on producing amazing stalls for our third annual Market Day.

The event was enjoyed by the whole College, and we were impressed at the creativity and entrepreneurial skills that were shown by Market Stall holders. There was a huge variety of sweets, savoury food, trinkets and handmade items. It was encouraging to see a majority of students choosing to make products to sell and being so creative in their chosen products.

Part of the lunchtime entertainment was a performance by some of our Strings Students and their tutor Miss Andrews.

The event was part of their HASS unit where students had to form a team, choose a product, market it, make it and sell it. After the event, each stall handed in their tokens, and taxed according to their earnings. All taxes will be donated to the chosen charity “Voice of Grace”. Last year over $700 was raised, given the number of students happily shopping, one can hope this total will be beaten this year!

As a College we also wore free dress in exchange for a gold coin donation and Mrs Kemp was overjoyed at your generosity! This will also be added to the donation to “Voice of Grace”!

Congratulations Mrs Kemp and Mrs le Roux for coordinating such a wonderful event, it is a highlight on our calendar and brings so much joy to the end of term 2!

Family Rock Climbing Night was a HIT!

Family Rock Climbing Night was a HIT!

Over 50 people attended our Family Rock Climbing Night. We enjoyed a short message by Mr Stanway and then it was all climbing from there! So many of our new climbers scaled the full height of the beginner’s tower and our more experienced climbers showed off their skill on the higher levels. It was also great to see some parents climbing and showing their kids “how it’s done” too!

Key dates for Year 12 Students!

The time is coming to celebrate our Year 12s. There is much work to be done before the celebrations, and here are the dates to keep in your diary so we can lift up our amazing Class of 2024 in prayer before we farewell them on 16 October!

Mother’s Day Stall

Mother’s Day Stall

A big thank you to all of our Volunteers who prepared and purchased gifts to go towards our annual Mother’s Day gift stall.

Foundation Friends provides this unique shopping opportunity for students to choose a gift for their Mother or Mother-figure in their life. It is a blessing to see the joy on each child’s face when they find that perfect gift for Mum.

Healthy Harold returns to FCC!

Healthy Harold returns to FCC!

Our Primary School Students enjoyed their annual visit from Healthy Harold.

Healthy Harold is a giraffe, accompanied by his teacher, who encourages students to be healthy in all aspects of their life. Whether it be learning:

  • How to be a good friend
  • How to take care of your body – hygiene and healthy eating
  • How to respond in an emergency situation
  • How to be responsible online…and more!

Each year group covered a different theme that was relevant to their age and students loved meeting Harold, both as a life-sized giraffe and a puppet!

Year 5 and 6 GRIT – Inter school Sports!

Year 5 and 6 GRIT – Inter school Sports!

Our Years 5 and 6s have been participating in the PSSA (Peel Schools Sports Association) Competition this term in the sporting codes of: Hockey, AFL, Soccer, Netball, Volleyball!

Our first lots of competition was against Assumption Primary School and our Hockey and Soccer Teams had wins! For some students it is their first taste of team sport, or even in that particular sport, so we are very proud of their resilience and tenacity to keep on going! Further competitions were against Frederick Irwin, Mandurah Baptist and Mandurah Catholic Colleges.

A massive thank you to our Year 5 and 6 Teachers and parents who have been training our students and then attending the games.

Science Week action in Secondary..

Wednesday’s Lunchtime Highlight…

The lunchtime activity hosted by our Senior Science Team was called “Great Balls of Water”. Students mixed a solution of Sodium Alginate with a solution of Calcium Lactate and VOILA! Bubbles containing water were formed! AND they were food grade so could be tasted! Students were amazed at seeing how two liquids can come together and create a water bubble they could handle.

Secondary Cross Country action!

Secondary Cross Country action!

Our Secondary Cross Country event was a great success and the weather held out for us to enjoy a wonderful time outdoors! We were so pleased that the rain stayed away.

Well done to Mr Aspeling and his team for doing a great job organising the Secondary Cross Country.

Please enjoy the images from the event and special thanks to student photographers Emily and Eli, for helping me with photography on the day!

Year 10s head to Perth Convention Centre for Careers Expo

Year 10s head to Perth Convention Centre for Careers Expo

On Friday 17 May, our Year 10s headed to the Perth Convention Centre to attend the Careers Expo with Mr Aspeling our Pathways Coordinator!

The group travelled by train to the centre and spent the day listening to presentations by employers and also had the opportunity to speak with various training organisations.

This is an invaluable experience for students to help them plan their final years of schooling to launch their career.

Special Guests for ANZAC Day Service

Special Guests for ANZAC Day Service

Our College commemorated ANZAC Day early this year and we were blessed to have three very special guests attend and participate in our ceremony.

We welcomed back our Patron of History, Mr Kevin Fowler and he led us through the Ode of Remembrance, The Last Post and The Rouse. Mr Michael Baker, one of our College Music Tutors, played the bugle for The Last Post and The Rouse. Visitors, Staff and Students all commented how having a War Veteran lead the Ode and have The Last Post and The Rouse played live, had a great and wonderful impact on those attending the ANZAC Ceremony.

Our guest speaker was Commander Paul Tucker, RAN and he not only described the work that our armed forces do for our country, but he also explained to us what the ANZAC spirit meant. Here is an extract from his address that explains what this means…

“But what does the ANZAC spirit actually mean? And what should it mean to you? Students, I put it to you that it’s more than just a word, it describes qualities found in everyday Australians, not just men and women serving in the Profession of Arms.  It can be applied by all of us in our everyday lives.

The ANZAC spirit represents a sense of purpose and direction. The original ANZAC’s knew what they had to do, they knew the dangers and the difficulties that they would face, but they dug in and did not let those difficulties stop them from executing their objective. …

Now students, you too can apply this in your everyday life. You know what work needs to be done at school and you know what jobs your parents have set you around the house. No matter how difficult things might become, think of the ANZAC’s and their fighting spirit, dig deep, push those difficulties to one side, and accomplish your task.

The ANZAC spirit also represents an acceptance of responsibility. ……Take responsibility for everything you do. It is easy to say ‘I did that’ or ‘that’s my work’ when everything goes right, but sometimes things don’t quite go to plan. Sometimes you do something that is against the wishes of your parents or teachers. When this happens, remember the ANZAC spirit, and take responsibility for what you are doing or what you have done.  For only You can take responsibility for your actions, you should celebrate your wins, but you need to own your losses.

The ANZAC spirit also includes a sense of compassion. This is often referred to by Australians as a sense as mateship. This means we watch out for our mates; we help them at all times, we pick them up if they fall, and support them when they’re having a bad day…. don’t ever pick on someone for being different than you, or for being less fortunate or defenceless.  That person may one day save your life in the heat of battle or be there when you just need a friend.

So, when somebody asks you what the ANZAC SPIRIT is all about, you can now say it’s about purpose and direction, acceptance of responsibility, and a sense of compassion and mateship. You might also use words like Honour, Integrity, Courage, Trust and Selflessness.

Like every other person in Australia I pray to our Lord and Saviour, that we will never again be involved in another great war – but students, the message that I leave you with here today, is that you don’t need a war to demonstrate the ANZAC spirit, you don’t need a war to honour the men and woman who gave, or continue to give their lives to ensure our freedom. You don’t need a war to demonstrate courage or selflessness.  You can do this at home, in the classroom or on the playground.  It’s up to you.”

ANZAC Day is a very special occasion of remembrance on our college calendar and we are very grateful for the service our special guests gave to us.

Lest we forget.

Student Achievement – Ethan Peake

Student Achievement – Ethan Peake

Ethan swims with Pinjarra Swimming Club and he was recognised at the recent School Sport WA Presentation Night.  Ethan, an MC swimmer was presented a Sportsmanship Award for his incredible actions at the National Championships back in August 2023. Whilst in marshalling he was teaching Auslan to kids from NSW who wanted to learn how to communicate with a deaf swimmer in their team.  The joy from the deaf swimmer when his teammates signed to him was heart-warming and a joy to those who witnessed the exchange.  Well done Ethan!

It just goes to show that actions are remembered by those around you and months later, Ethan was recognised for his kind actions!

Student Achievement – Addison Heatley

Student Achievement – Addison Heatley

Addison, currently in Year 12, is an avid sailor sailing a ILCA-4 (Laser 4.7); and after gaining a top 5 position in the National Championships earlier this year, she has qualified to compete in the 2024 ILCA Youth World Championships to be held in Viana do Castelo (Portugal)! She will be part of the Australian Team and one of 140 girls selected from around the world who will compete at this regatta.

Addison is also one of our Outdoor Education Students who excels in her course. She says she has a passion for being outdoors and really enjoys the beauty of being out on the water (along with the thrill of competition!). Addison’s “home club” is the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club, and at her “City” club, the Royal Perth Yacht Club she is able to train, compete, and hold the position of JR. Dinghy Captain.

Addison has also been successful in receiving a scholarship with P.R.A.S. (Peel Regional Academy of Sports) where she will receive support with services such as strength and conditioning coaching and plan, gym membership, nutritional plans and education, as well as access to talent development workshops and coaching support.

Congratulations Addison – we pray for a wonderful and successful experience in Portugal!
