FCC News – October Wrap-Up - 17 November
From our Principal, Mr Stanway

From our Principal, Mr Stanway

Dear Parents/Guardians,

So far this term, we have celebrated the Year 12s who have finished their classes for the year, and they are now sitting their final ATAR exams. It has also been a wonderful few weeks celebrating the Creative Arts at FCC. Well done to Mr Shanhun and the Arts team on presenting the different Visual & Media Art displays, Musical performances, and Drama monologues.

Family Camp out

On Friday 28 October, we had over 150 people camp out on the back oval. It was a wonderful evening of sporting activities, camp-fire, sausage-sizzle, groups games, spot-light, etc. Families arrived at 5pm onwards to set-up camp with either their caravan, tent or swags around the Secondary oval near the MPH. It was a great opportunity to spend time together as family, have fun, and build community. Thank you to all those who helped set-up and cook the BBQ. Please see this Foundation Friends Article with images from this exciting event.

Please note: The next Fathering Project event will be a Fishing outing in Term 1, 2023. (Date TBC)

Exams & Assessments

Over the next few weeks, the students will be sitting for exams across the different year levels. These exams form an integral part of the assessment process and contribute towards the Semester Two reports that will be issues at the end of term.

Here are the SCSA Assessment Principles and Reflective questions:

Assessment should be an integral part of Teaching and Learning

  • Assessments should arise naturally out of the teaching and intended learning of the curriculum and syllabus.

Assessment should be educative

  • Assessment practices should be educationally sound and contribute to learning.

Assessment should be fair

  • Assessment needs to take account of the diverse needs of students, to be equitable with regard to gender, disability, background language and socio-economic status and not discriminate on grounds that are irrelevant to learning.

Assessments should be designed to meet their specific purposes

  • Information collected to establish where students are in their learning can be used for summative purposes (assessment of learning) and for formative purposes (assessment for learning) because it is used to inform subsequent teaching.

Assessment should lead to informative reporting

  • Reporting happens at the end of a teaching cycle and should provide an accurate summary of the formative and summative assessment information collected for each student. The purpose of reporting is to provide feedback to students, parents, and teachers.

Assessment should lead to school-wide evaluation processes

  • Highly effective schools pay particular attention to teachers’ qualitative and quantitative data and standardised test data.

Primary & Secondary Award Assemblies

Towards the end of Term 4, both the Primary and Secondary schools have their Awards assemblies.  It is a time when we recognise and honour the achievements of students across the different learning areas. Staff go through a process of nominating various students for awards, then decide on the recipient of that award as a team. The following awards will be presented during each assembly:

  • Christian Endeavour
  • Citizenship Award
  • Academic Excellence/DUX
  • Most Improved
  • Creative Arts
  • Visual Arts
  • Sports Award
  • Technology Award
  • Positive Image
  • GRIT

Year 10 – 12 awards are the same as above, but in addition they also have:

  • Academic Excellence ATAR
  • Academic Excellence General
  • Academic Excellence VET

Congratulations to all award recipients. Awards and photos of the each of the events will be featured in the 2022 Yearbook. Both the staff and students are working hard to end the year well leading up to the Semester Two reports. We are very impressed with all their efforts!

The term is going by quickly, and there is always something exciting happening, including celebrating the Queen’s Jubiliee (have you noticed the new trees planted in the Nature Play area and outside the Senior School?) along with our 25th Birthday. Please keep Thursday 1 December free for our 25th Birthday Assembly and Family Picnic.

Kind Regards,

Mr Neville Stanway

Principal

Year 4 Excursion – Canning River Eco Centre

Year 4 Excursion – Canning River Eco Centre

Wetlands are an important part of our environment in Perth and especially in the Peel area where we live. On Monday 24 October Miss de Swarts and Mr Mitchell’s Year 4 classes visited the Canning River Eco Centre. The weather was perfect, and the day was a busy one full of learning. We were grateful to our parent helpers who travelled with us. Thank you to Mrs Arthur, Mrs Hazeldean, Mrs Orchard and Mrs de Villiers. The Eco Centre staff educated us on the environment of the area, the ecosystems within it and the creatures living there.

One highlight was sampling the water of the river to see the micro invertebrates swimming in the water. This was great fun and extended the vocabulary.  Students took the opportunity to sample and record the amazing and diverse macroinvertebrate communities that live in the Canning River. Students used field equipment to investigate the critical role of aquatic life in maintaining the health of wetland ecosystems

The second part of the excursion was learning about the health of the river catchments. Sustainability and natural resources are part of our curriculum so finding out where the Canning River comes from and where does it flow fitted well into our learning plans. A big picture view of our waterways was presented, and students interacted with a 3-D model to consider the human impacts on the Swan-Canning River catchment, the consequences for living things and action people can take for sustainable change.

Funding and FINANCES

We would like to acknowledge Bindi Henry, the College’s Business Manager, and the finance team as they work on next year’s budget.

End of Year

As the school year comes to a close we have been privileged to attend some special events including the Year 12 Final Assembly and College Awards Nights. It is always deeply moving to see our graduates prayed for by younger students as well as families and friends at the final assembly and farewelled in style through the whole-school guard of honour. We pray our graduates would continue to seek the Lord in all things and grow in knowledge and understanding of Him.

Congratulations to our newly appointed 2023 Student Leaders! What an exceptional group of emerging leaders, ready and committed to learn and serve and lead.

Blessings to staff and families at FCC, thank you for your continued support and involvement.

Celebrating our Year 12s – at a Whole College Assembly

Celebrating our Year 12s – at a Whole College Assembly

Our Year 12 Farewell Worship Assembly was held on Thursday Thursday 20 October !

What a special time of prayer, worship and celebration of a group of fine young men and women.
We worshipped together,  Mr Stanway shared a wonderful message to our Graduates and families and students were able to pray for their graduates.
What is special about this FCC annual tradition is that our younger students are encouraged to pray for our Graduates – what a gift for our young students to be able to step up  and encourage one another in this way.

At the conclusion of the assembly, the whole College made a guard of honour and celebrated as our Year 12s walked through to the flag pole to throw their mortarboards in celebration!

It is our hope that this experience means our younger students will look forward to their own graduation worship assembly in years to come.
God is good!

Enjoy these images from the event.

Operation Christmas Child – back at FCC!

Operation Christmas Child – back at FCC!

During Term 4, all Secondary School students learnt about Operation Christmas Child and their Shoeboxes in Christian Education classes.
Mr Coman coordinated this initiative and encouraged students to consider packing a Christmas shoebox to send to children in developing countries.

His goal was for 50 shoeboxes to be filled and 61 in total were filled and taken to headquarters recently!

Well done Mr Coman and our amazing Secondary Students!

If you would like to see some information about this work, please checkout the Operation Christmas Child website.

Technology Week 2022

Technology Week 2022

This year we launched the inaugural technology week at Foundation Christian College. The amazing technology teaching team prepared four lunch time sessions with activities geared to stretch students 21st century skills.

Students were engaged with the following activities, that showcased the different technology areas within the College.

Monday: Students were challenged to create Vege Animal’s using only food! We saw some very creative interpretations of animals!

Tuesday: Students were challenged to work together to build a tower of cups without physically touching the cups with any part of their body. In true Mr Botha style students were also challenged to come up with the “best” dad joke.

Wednesday: Here we had students come together in the Goodwill Centre to compete in a Minecraft building challenge, a directional programming challenge using Probots and lastly they got to experience some amazing games designed by the Year 8 students.

Thursday: The engineering challenge set out was to use only skewer sticks and tape to hold up a brick paver. One team successfully made a 35cm tower which held a brick for over 10 seconds! WOW!

Students doing great things in our Community.

FCC Students Chelsea and Max Turner have joined the Leo Lions Club to do fundraising in the community. We are particularly proud of the leadership role they have undertaken and congratulate Chelsea on writing her first newsletter for the club. The newsletter is attached for your information. Well done Chelsea and Max!

The Fathering Project: Talking About Cyberbullying

Although development of online technology has provided us with some amazing new ways to communicate and socialise, it can, unfortunately, provide a new space for bullying to occur.

Research has shown that many of the children and young people start off with face to face and move to online bullying. So, it is important to get in early and teach your children better ways to behave socially before these bullying become intrenched as a pattern in their social behaviour.

Family Games Night and Camp Out

Family Games Night and Camp Out

Over 150 people came to our Annual Camp Out and enjoyed a lot of fun games including Dodgeball (parents Vs kids – OH the competition was STRONG!) and Glow Stick Spotlight!

It was awesome to see families come together to meet for the first time, or catch up – there was no technology in sight and children and parents played soccer – actually they would have happily played soccer if we let them but Mr Stanway and Mr King had the games planned and were ready for action!

Sausages were cooked and enjoyed around the campfire and many marshmallows were eaten!

There were tens, swags and caravans around the perimeter of the oval – we made our home away from home!

The rain did come early and we were up early packing away, but we wouldn’t have changed the occasion – we can’t wait for the next one!

Thank you to all families who supported this event, especially our Dads Team who did the cooking on the night – Trent Costelow, Zach Sowerby, Mike Ruwodo and JP le Roux.
