To make purchases at the Café, students can now pay using SmartRider card, provided you have added value to it through QuickCliq.

Lego Club

Lego Club

This week Lego celebrates it 90th Birthday! Our Logo club is also celebrating great success for our Primary School students!

Each lunchtime is set aside for a certain year group and the Lego Zone is cared for by our Student Leaders. They do a wonderful job making sure that the Lego area remains tidy, creations that are still “in progress” are looked after and in general make sure everyone is having a Lego-good time!

For those who would prefer a bit of competition rather than Lego construction, there is a table-tennis table in the room and this has also been a hit!

The allocation of this room along with the Lego and table-tennis has been a wonderful service to our Primary students especially during the wet weather.

Year 5/6 GRIT Program

Year 5/6 GRIT Program

Year 5 and 6 students are participating in a GRIT program for Term 3 and 4 each Friday afternoon, Session 6 and 7.

The word ‘grit’ is often used to describe resilience, perseverance and determination. GRIT aims to develop grit and much more. GRIT is an acronym for Getting Along, Resilience Thinking, Identifying Emotions and Taking Responsibility.

Over Term 3 and 4 the Year 5 and 6 students will participate in the following four rotations:

Rotation 1 is about Service Learning

Students learn educational standards through tackling real-life problems in their community. They will develop an understanding of homelessness in Mandurah and engage in community service with the Salvation Army by making meals for the homeless and sorting through donation items at the Thrift shop.

Rotation 2 is Gym Sports

Students will develop new skills and challenge themselves by participating in gym sports such as Gymnastics, Ninja warrior and parkour (this will take place at Infinity Gym Sports Centre, Greenfields). – See below for Gym Sports Action!

Rotation 3 is Industrial Arts

Industrial Arts is an educational program that features the fabrication of objects in wood or metal using a variety of hand, power, or machine tools. Students will follow the design process and create a functional item, such as a wooden money or jewelry box.

Rotation 4 is about Innovation and 21st Century Skills

Makey Makey is an incredible tool to get students thinking about how they can use technology to interact with their environment in imaginative ways. Students will use Makey Makey kits to connect the world around them to their computers.

Meet our Team – Miss Williams

Meet our Team – Miss Williams

Hi, I’m Miss Allison Williams, the K-12 Inclusive Education Coordinator. I began my teaching career here at FCC in 2000, and I made a return to Mandurah (and FCC) in 2020, after being at Thornlie Christian College for 16 years. I have worked in numerous leadership roles over the years within curriculum, literacy, student and staff development.

In Inclusive Education, I have predominately been liaising with parents/ guardians and staff to develop student documented plans; coordinating Naplan, OLNA and Oars PAT testing; working with staff in areas of Inclusivity – developing differentiated teaching strategies for all students, managing neurodiverse students; and working with leadership to develop stronger teaching practises.

Should you want to talk to me about your child, you can email me: allison.williams@fcc.wa.edu.au.

For Primary School Parents – Encouraging a Growth Mindset

Children with a growth mindset believe that if they work hard, they can achieve improved results. They have a more positive attitude towards learning, are more willing to face challenges and see failure as a part of the process of learning.

For Secondary School Parents – Supporting Organisation Skills for School

The restructuring going on in the brain during adolescent years involves the area of the brain that controls executive functioning, which includes planning, reasoning, organisation and thinking before we act. STUDY CAFé

It is so great to be back at FCC and now in Week 4, well into our curriculum for the term. Term 3 is a wonderful term where the ‘dust settles’ for new students and both socially and academically; students have great information from Semester One reports to review their progress to build on areas of strength and develop a growth mindset in areas of challenge – and we all have those!!

For me personally, as I often share with students was Maths!! I struggled in that area and required a tutor in Year 11 & 12 to support me, and that certainly helped!! It is important for our students to access as much assistance as they can, from their class teachers, great to attend Study Café in K Block (Senior School Common Room) every Wednesday from 3.15pm to 4.15pm, where Secondary Staff are present to give some valuable ‘one on one’.

EXPLORING ISSUES OF IDENTITY AND BELONGING

In Extended Home Class and in Christian Education we are exploring issues of Identity and belonging, also engaging with some RUOK, Mental Health curriculum to support resilience of mind and thinking!!! Our Year 7’s are also learning about their strengths and support available to help them in GRIT Elective.

When you speak honestly with young people today, they are struggling with the internal pressures they place on themselves to be ‘successful’ and to attain what the world defines as ‘the good life’; attaining a great job, buying a good house, having a good relationship… All those things are ‘good’, but we have been speaking more broadly about God’s desire for us to live with purpose, faith and integrity and to live a life that is ‘undivided’.

The confidence to live an undivided life – to be true to your faith and values takes courage in today’s society but is the pathway to living the life God has for each one of us- one of abundance and fulfilment!!

Secondary Uniform

We are developing some great consistencies in the area of uniform and the new updated guidelines will be available this week in classes, on our Facebook page in a new updated policy.

There are some slight changes that will support our school being ‘team’ and showing respect and care for our college through great stewardship of uniform.

From our Principal – Mr Stanway

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I trust that your week is going well. The first few weeks of term have flown by quickly. It is already the end of Week 4 and both staff and students are busy working through the curriculum. Also, in Term 3, both the Primary and Secondary schools will have their House Athletics Carnivals. It is great seeing the students practicing the different sports and getting ready to compete with one another. As long as they do their best and try their hardest; that is what matters the most.

Senior School Subject & Career Information Night

It was great to see so many students and parents attend the Senior School Subject Selection evening.  Mr Aspeling (Pathways Coordinator) and Mr Angelos (7-12 Curriculum Coordinator) organized a range of educational service providers to display information about their courses.

The Heads of Learning Areas also set-up display representing each learning area and the subjects available at FCC.

The aim of the night was to show students the connection between the range of subjects we offer at FCC and the pathways to various courses at TAFE, University or different Apprenticeships.

Mr Aspeling and Mr Angelos then explained how Pathway program works and the difference between ATAR and General courses at FCC. It was a wonderful evening, and I would like to thank all the staff for their work in putting on the evening. Well done!

Student Prayer Group & Bible Study

One of the most important priorities we want to continue to develop and invest into in the Secondary school is Christian living. I believe this area is pivotal to the development of our College, and therefore, it is imperative that we invest more into this area. As a CEN school, the distinction of being genuinely Christ-centred is paramount to who we are and what we do at FCC. ‘A WAY OF LIVING – Christian education is not just about a Christian way of understanding. It is also about a Christian way of living. When Jesus said, “Follow me”, he was expecting people to dedicate their whole lives to serving God. Christian education informs, invites, and inspires young people to live this way. The Christian school offering Christian education seeks to teach this way of life every day through all that is done and taught. It does this in a setting of a unified community of love and learning between parents, children, and teachers.’

(CEN website: What is Christian Education? – Christian Education National (cen.edu.au)

We are already seeing examples of this at school. Earlier this term, several students approached the staff about starting a lunch-time prayer group for students. This is such an exciting initiative, because it provides an opportunity for students to come together and prayer for the school. It also empowers the students to openly share their faith and encourage others in the process. Also, one of the Secondary teachers has started a Bible Study for some of the Year 9 & 10 students. This is another great opportunity for the students to grow in their knowledge and understanding of God’s word. This is so exciting!!!

Outreach & Community Service

Both the Secondary and Primary students are looking at practical ways of serving the local community and raising funds for outreach. The Primary students are partnering together with the Salvation Army to provide food for the homeless, and the Secondary students will be doing a ‘free-dress day fundraising event for Homestead for Youth, and also, they will be collecting ‘winter-woolies’ for the homeless in Mandurah. It is really important that young people look at ways of serving others. It is a great witness to the community, and it is wonderful to share God’s love in these practical ways.

God is so good, and we can see Him working in the hearts and lives of the children. May God bless you, and I look forward to seeing you around the College.

Kind Regards,

Mr Neville Stanway

Principal
