Length of time in educational Advancement and prior experience?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0
\nFourteen years, first at an independent girls\u2019 school and now at a boys\u2019 school. I started as a newspaper journalist before working in public relations, completing a postgraduate degree in strategic communications, and then moving into the education sector.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Proudest achievement?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0
\nBeing a working mum! Professionally, having a seat on the School Executive and influencing decisions that affect the entire school and its direction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Biggest challenge?<\/span><\/b> \u00a0
\nLearning how to manage staff and keeping up in the ever-evolving digital space.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Most impactful book or podcast you\u2019ve consumed recently?<\/span><\/b> \u00a0
\nI\u2019m currently reading \u2018Power Play\u2019 by former lawyer and politician Julia Banks about gender dynamics in the workplace \u2013 an interesting reflection on both subtle and overt sexism. It reminds me of how fortunate I am to work in an industry where so many women are leading the way. I\u2019m also reading \u2018Ikigai\u2019 about the secrets to a long and meaningful life. Finding your purpose is a key ingredient, which reminds me of how lucky I am to be able to blend my love of writing with my passion for education.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Three tips \/ words of advice for new members and\/or those new to advancement.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Although you are not a teacher, you are vital to the effective functioning of your school. You are probably one of the only, if not the only person with your skill set at your school, which makes you the expert in the room!<\/span>\u00a0<\/li>\n
  2. Whether you are new to Advancement or a seasoned professional, there is always more to learn and ways to hone your craft. <\/span>\u00a0<\/li>\n
  3. Build a good relationship with your CFO! Unfortunately, some see marketing-related costs as expenses rather than investments. Demonstrate ROI.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    What do you find most valuable in being a member of Educate Plus?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u00a0
    \nThe networking, professional development opportunities and support available. In our own schools we are probably the only one doing our particular job, so it\u2019s wonderful to have a network of colleagues with whom we can discuss our professional practice.\u00a0<\/span>
