WA Chapter eNewsletter – November 2025 - 28 November 2025

From the Chapter President

Advancement is a Contact Sport

In our roles, everything we do relies on connection… real, human, intentional connection. You can have the best systems, the sharpest strategy or the slickest campaign, but without genuine relationships, none of it lands. I’ve been reminded of that constantly this year, including through my involvement in the Leadership WA Signature Leadership Program, where one idea kept resurfacing: connection isn’t the “soft” part of our work. It’s the hard part. And it’s the part that makes everything else possible.

The more I heard it, the more I recognised it in our sector. In advancement, we meet people at defining moments: families making decisions, Alumni reconnecting after years away, donors exploring their legacy, students finding their confidence, communities wanting to feel seen. We build trust in small, consistent ways, by listening deeply, by meeting people where they are, by staying present even when the pace is relentless. We’re shaping belonging.

That’s why educate+ works the way it does. It’s because the organisation is held together by people who care about one another and care about building something meaningful. At the recent WA Chapter AGM, that was clear. We connected, we learnt, and we thanked those who are stepping off the Committee, who have contributed time, energy, passion and wisdom. We also acknowledged those staying on, for their hard work to date and their contributions they will continue to make. And we also welcomed new Committee member, Julia Bairstow from Great Southern Grammar as our Regional Representative, adding an important voice from across the State. To all of you, thank you. And to our Sponsors and Partners, whose support strengthens professional learning and community-building across WA, we are incredibly grateful.

As I look toward next year, I keep coming back to one thing: the heart of our work isn’t in the metrics or milestones, it’s in the moments of connection that allow all those things to happen (even if our managers claim otherwise)! When we show up with empathy, curiosity and presence, our impact reaches further. People feel it. Communities grow because of it.

So, as we head into summer, it’s worth remembering that in sport, the off-season isn’t just about rest, it’s where some of the most important work happens. Some of us will be taking a well-earned break, and some will be quietly laying the groundwork for the year ahead. Both matter. What’s important is that we each find the space we need to reset, refocus and return with energy and purpose, particularly so we can all meet up, fresh and ready to go at our Welcome Sundowner on Wednesday 18 February!

Advancement is a contact sport, and the way this community plays means we all come out winners. Heading into 2026, I’m energised knowing I have this network as my team, and I hope you feel the same.

All the best,

Laura Kendall

Let’s Meet a Member

Each eNews, we introduce you to one of our wonderful Chapter Members.
In the hot seat this edition is Anushia Suppiah – Admissions & Growth Manager, Penrhos College

What is the length of time you’ve been in educational Advancement and what is your prior experience?

I have been working in educational Advancement for more than 25 years, and have been involved in everything from international student recruitment to enrolments and fees. I am coming up to 3.5 years with Penrhos College, and previously worked for 17 years in Student Management within Higher Education (UWA & Murdoch). Before that I worked in Malaysia with British Council and INTI College.

What is your proudest achievement?

My proudest achievement has been building authentic, long-lasting relationships within the various organisations I have worked in. I’ve always believed when you invest in people and work collaboratively within teams, every goal is achievable. A 20% increase in enrolments in my first 12months from process improvements is also another highpoint!

What has been your biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge has been managing the evolving expectations of various stakeholders simultaneously and staying true to core values. Working within educational Advancement requires both strategy and heart, and finding that equilibrium is ongoing; not to mention trying to maintain a work life balance as well.

What is the most impactful book or podcast you’ve consumed recently?

I am currently in the middle of Kaizen by Sarah Harvey; a recommendation from my 17-year-old son! Not sure what change he’s hoping for and for who’s benefit but I’ll give it a go!

What are three tips or words of advice for new members and/or those new to Advancement?

  • Patience is truly a virtue — everything takes time and you will get there
  • Keep learning – this is an ever-evolving sector
  • Be your authentic self – genuine honesty can be hard to accept but people do appreciate it

What do you find most valuable in being a member of Educate Plus?

The networking with like-minded professionals who have been so generous with their knowledge and support. It’s been incredibly invaluable and refreshing to share ideas, challenges, and successes with others who actually understand the “unique” world of educational Advancement.

Future-Ready Schools: Marketing Smarter with AI

Future-Ready Schools: Marketing Smarter with AI

With the 2025 edition of Face-2-Face Magazine just moments away from dropping, we are thrilled to share a sneak peak into an article from your very own WA Chapter colleague, Margo Bastow!

(And keep an eye on your inbox for the F2F Magazine launch – there are a couple more fabulous articles from fellow WA Chapter Members … plus over 20 contributions from across Australia, New Zealand and Asia!)

Budgets are tight. Teams are lean. Expectations keep climbing. For marketers in education, the pressure to “do more with less” has never been greater.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is beginning to offer us a way forward — not just for speed, but for smarter, higher-quality work. Its promise lies in freeing people to focus on the most human parts of the job: building relationships, telling stories, and shaping the future of our schools.

“AI is not about speed for speed’s sake. It is about working better and smarter.”

Moving Beyond Dabbling

At the 2025 WA Chapter Summit, I introduced the CRIT method for prompting — Context, Role, Interview, Task (a framework created by Leadership coach Geoff Woods). It turns even a basic chatbot into a purposeful partner. Since then, AI has accelerated fast. The question is no longer whether institutions should use it, but how confidently and consistently they will.

Following, are the five levels of AI where educational institutions need to be building skills. The key is not to stop at Level 1. Each level builds on the last. The schools that thrive will be those that keep progressing.

  • Level 1. LLMs (Chatbots). Most institutions start with ChatGPT or Gemini for quick drafts and summaries. They are useful but limited, struggling with memory and consistency. Better prompting, such as CRIT, matters for purposeful results.
  • Level 2. Custom GPTs + Projects. Together, these move beyond one-off chats into reusable systems. Custom GPTs become digital teammates, shaped to your institution’s voice and values. Projects act like a personal filing cabinet, holding context, resources and your GPTs in one place so you do not start from scratch every time. Both features are available on the free plan, although paid plans offer higher limits and more capability. This level brings consistency and time savings, helping staff spend less time repeating work and more time building relationships that matter.
  • Level 3. Workflows. Tools like Zapier, Make, or n8n connect AI to your existing systems, automating tasks such as routing enquiries, updating databases, or triggering Communications. They free staff for higher-value work while ensuring routine processes happen reliably.
  • Level 4. AI Agents. Unlike workflows that follow recipes, agents work autonomously toward a goal. You set the outcome, such as “run an Open Day campaign,” and the agent decides the steps: drafting emails, segmenting audiences, posting reminders, and adjusting based on engagement.
  • Level 5. Vibe Coding. On the horizon, this will allow you to describe an App in plain English, and AI builds it for you. Early platforms like Lovable, Replit, and Reverence AI are already showing what’s possible. Imagine creating a parent engagement tool without writing a single line of code.

At its best, AI is not replacing our people but amplifying their capacity to do the work only humans can do.”

The Leadership Imperative
The age of casual experimentation is fading. The marketers who thrive will be those who move beyond dabbling, investing in stronger systems, clearer strategies, and more confident teams.

“AI will not wait for us. The question is… will we step up and shape it, or be shaped by it?”

Key Tips

  • Master prompting. Clear input creates accurate, values-aligned output.
  • Build systems. Use Custom GPTs + Projects (paid plans) to reduce repetition and scale consistency.
  • Keep progressing. Move beyond LLMs toward Workflows, Agents, and Vibe Coding to stay ahead.
