WA Chapter eNews May 2021 - 24 May 2021

President’s welcome

Hello to our members, both long-standing and new!

Well, after an unfortunate last-minute cancellation of our Networking PD, we are looking forward to getting this event back on the calendar. It’s going to be a great session, and we hope to see as many of you there as possible. Click here to register your attendance.

The committee have been working to put together fantastic PD opportunities for the remainder of this year and are excited to be launching those events shortly. We are also looking forward to moving away from the online sessions and are excited to be face to face with our members once again.

It has been wonderful to receive several messages from our members requesting specific professional development opportunities. We would love to hear from you if you are looking for specific training on something related to your area of work to help develop your skill-set, or if there is a particular topic in which you would like more training. Please contact me directly at susie.gill@stcatherines.uwa.edu.au if you would like to put in a request. This organisation has always been guided by its members, and we would love to hear from you!

I would also direct you to the Resources and Member’s Area of the Educate Plus website, which feature a plethora of shared knowledge – I would encourage you to take the time to peruse the offerings available in these areas.

One last reminder that our International Conference is going ahead from September 6 to 9 in Adelaide. For those of you hoping to convince your organisation to support your attendance, you may be interested in using this Convince Your Boss proposal that you can take straight to the top! I hope to see as many of you there as possible.

We have recently set up a WA Chapter Educate Plus Group on Facebook. This is a private platform for our WA members to chat about all things Advancement. Please join us in this group, ask questions, discuss any issues you may have in your role and share insights and achievements with other WA members.

I hope you enjoy reading the latest WA Chapter Newsletter, click on the topics on the right-hand-side of this page, or the arrows at the bottom of the page, to read the articles and information. As always, please feel free to contact me if there’s anything in particular you’d like included in the future.

WA Chapter PD on Networking

WA Chapter PD on Networking

We are excited to announce our next event on a PD session on networking.

Networking has many benefits:

  • allows you access to opportunities you might not be able to find on your own.
  • has the potential to provide you with insight into different fields
  • advice on how you can improve professionally.

Your network can be vital to your professional success. Networking is not only about trading information, but also serves as an avenue to create long-term relationships with mutual benefits.

We look forward to a presentation from Daniel McCullen, who made an appearance on the tv show Shark Tank

Presenter

Networking Expert Daniel McCullen, M.Ed. Co-Founder and CEO at SpacetoCo

Daniel has worked in education for over a decade including the administrative side of educational delivery by building programs, policy and staff management. He worked as  part of a founding team to commence what is now one of the largest secondary schools in WA, Ashdale Secondary College, involving rolling out the Federal Laptop for Students program and creating professional development opportunities to support teachers as well as classroom teaching. Daniel also successfully worked to earn endorsement for the school for an Autism Extension Program and as a Specialist Technology School.

All of Daniel’s experiences have culminated in the opportunity to be a co-founder of SpacetoCo, the Airbnb of short-term space hire. The business works to improve local economies by connecting people with spaces in their local community. Spaces on the program are as varied as tennis courts to board rooms to wedding venues. As a successful sharing economy platform, SpacetoCo has the opportunity to change the way people think about space and allows people to access the resources that they need at the click of a button.

His team also made an appearance on the television show, Shark Tank, in a bid to get financial support for their new business. In each of his roles, networking and meeting new people were a key component to ensuring that each project had the right people working ‘on the business’, ‘in the business’ and supporting the business. Daniel also has experience in networking from a fundraising perspective when trying to raise capital for their new venture. As a result of his varied experiences, Daniel has many skills he will share with us. He has worked both in schools, and in corporate environments and understands the advancement landscape.

Daniel’s business, SpacetoCo, is founded on networking, and we look forward to having him share his expertise in this area with our members. Join us at the Educate Plus networking PD to hear Daniel’s story.

5 tips to writing emails that will always get you a reply

Emails are just as fundamental these days as food and water in our lives, and they form a large part of our daily communications.

Roughly 300 billion are sent around the world every day, according to Statista. On average, each of us who works in an office gets 121 emails per working day on average! Yet we send them and read them without thinking about them for a second.

But emails are essential. In some situations, they can’t be replaced with a short meeting or a phone call. We send them because of traceability or a time difference, or we need to have many people reading the same thing.

A study of around 1 million emails that was done with Microsoft shows the average employee spends 28 percent of his or her day working on emails.

But given how essential emails are, did anyone ever teach you how to write one?

I have dedicated the last 25 years to learning and teaching. I have trained in the Scouts and the Israeli Army, and I teach business at a German university today. Just like anyone else, I send and receive emails and texts. Loads of them. I use them to stay in touch with customers, collaborators and students around the world.

Productivity Styles and why they matter for you and your team

You could call me a productivity junkie. I’ve read countless books on the topic, hired a business coach to revamp my systems—I even write about productivity for a living. But like every junkie, many of the things I’ve tried have left me feeling burned out.

There was the time I hired an assistant to create a folder system to tame my emails, only to find that I preferred leaving my messages out in the open in my inbox. Shortly after was the two-day stint where I managed to hyper-focus on one task at a time using the Pomodoro Method, but then I felt exhausted and reverted to treating my task list like a sampler platter—a little bit of this for five minutes, a little bit of that for the next. (I need variety!)

I was starting to think something was wrong with me. That is, until I learned about productivity styles.

Developed by consultant Carson Tate, productivity styles refer to the way your brain is wired to process information, solve problems, and complete tasks. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach to getting stuff done, these styles give you the tools and knowledge to make the most of your innate tendencies.
