President’s Report

President’s Report

Welcome to the new financial year…or term three. Regardless of how you look at things, we have just a few months left to get to where we want to be by the end of the year. Even as we accelerate our efforts and activities, please don’t miss some real milestones worthy of your attention.

For the Chapter Committee and the Conference Committee, our focus is very much on EDGE: The SA-NT Chapter Conference 2019 from August 29-30, 2019. This is an incredible opportunity to network and learn from over 100 advancement colleagues. We have an amazing lineup of speakers to help you EXPLORE the power of data, DISCOVER new communication strategies, GROW your knowledge and skills, and ENGAGE and share experiences with peers who know exactly what you’re going through and the challenges you face. There will be plenty of opportunities to network and build relationships at the Conference, as well as at the Conference Dinner on Thursday, 29 August at a secret CBD location. You are welcome to bring a partner along, but you must register here

I also wanted to ask you to join me in welcoming Andrew Cockburn, to the SA-NT Chapter Executive. Andrew has over 15 years of marketing and communications experience and currently serves as the Marketing Director of MGM Wireless, and brings a plethora of digital marketing and communications skills to the chapter committee from previous roles with Newscorp, Pedare Christian College, Pro AV Solutions and Panasonic Australia.

We are always on the lookout for advancement professionals that are looking to give back to the sector through volunteering on our committee, so please let me know if this is something you would be interested in.

Lastly, I wanted to thank our Chapter and Organisational Sponsors who invest deeply in our success. Thank you for your partnership and what you make possible.

As you read through the newsletter, we ask you to look out for these key dates:

If you were to write a book about yourself, what would you call it? Not sure what I’ll call it, but it will be in “Spanglish’ for sure!

What do you like most about Educate Plus? Its people! I love hanging out with like-minded people… Having great conversations with colleagues at PD days, and knowing that when you need a sounding board, there is always someone at the other end of the phone willing to help you out!

How has Educate Plus helped you in your career development? It has provided me with the opportunity to meet wonderful people and also has given me access to thought leaders who were not on my radar

What is the most rewarding part of your role at Scotch College Adelaide? I really enjoy working with students across the years in various projects including the Junior School Philanthropy Scavenger, Gratitude Week and TEDxYouth@Scotch.

How did you first learn about Educate Plus? It was so long ago (more than ten years!)  that I cannot remember! But I think it was probably through my boss at the time, Karin Dunsford, who has always been encouraging to me and suggested that I look at the development opportunities on offer.

Who would you like to be for a day? Maybe someone who does something completely different from what I do, but I wouldn’t like to be anyone famous for a day – not even for all the tea in China!

Favourite movie? The Usual Suspects with Kevin Spacey

What’s one thing you couldn’t live without? Ricardo (husband) would say my iPad, but the answer is definitely ‘Music’. As Friedrich Nietzsche said, ‘Without music, life would be a mistake!’

Who has had the biggest impact on your career thus far and why? Many people have impacted my career over the years, but I think my mum had a great influence on me… Her passion, commitment, work ethic and dedication ignited my desire to work hard from an early age.

Favourite travel spot? Carrickalinga, Phi Phi Island (Thailand), Mystery Island (Vanuatu), Playa del Carmen (Mexico), Morrocoy Islands (Venezuela).. anywhere warm and beachy really!

What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had? Not sure if they are weird, but I had a few interesting jobs in my youth – I once chopped strawberries galore for a “strawberries and cream” stall in an Edinburgh rural fair while studying English, and I also worked as a calligrapher at a greeting card shop back in Venezuela.

What are your three most overused words/phrases? Is this in English or in Spanish? LOL. I think I can be accused of over using emojis ;P
