Queensland President’s Report

Since we’ve last ‘spoken’ we have seen incredible attendance across the five events which were held in Brisbane, Townsville or Bundaberg with 148 attendees. Thank you to the host schools – IONA College, Brisbane Boys’ College, Shalom College, and Citpointe Christian College. The QLD Chapter, our chapter, continues to go from strength to strength!

I’m thrilled that our next event is a Masterclass in donor communications and stewardship with the US-based ‘Donor Guru’, Lynne Wester on 10 June at Emmanuel College, UQ. Lynne presented at our Auckland Conference last year and it was incredibly valuable.

Our next benchmarking and networking opportunity is a combined Marketing and Admissions SIG (Special Interest Group) on 25 July at Nambour Christian College. I encourage all those working in those areas to attend this no cost, interactive session.

We already have over 150 registrations (not including sponsors) for the 2019 QLD Educate Plus Conference in Brisbane on 5-6 September. If you are only able to attend one PD this year, make it the Conference because your institution will thank you for the professional growth you return with. The Conference Committee has focused on members requests for assistance in ‘managing up’ with a strategic approach to Principals/Deputies, Business Managers and Board members joining a staff member at a 50% discount, if only for Day 1. It’s already bearing fruit with over 30 registered. Special thanks to Peter Franks, BBC for leading this initiative. View the program here

Congratulations to each of the 11 bursary or travel concession awardees as it will make all the difference in them attending our Conference and I know how inspired they will return to their institutions. There are still five remaining view details here

It is incredibly rewarding to see so many new members and conference registrations from our Regional initiatives in Townsville and Bundaberg this year, and Toowoomba and Rockhampton last year. Special thanks to Chapter Committee member Clare Grlj, Leading Marketing Solutions for leading this initiative.

Thank you to Digistorm as our 2019/2020 QLD Partner. We are grateful for the support of all our corporate partners as they enable the delivery of our quality program with exceptional value so please consider them for any opportunities you may have in the future. Special thanks to Chapter Committee member Alice Tidmarsh, St Aidan’s Girls’ School, for expanding this portfolio. Full list here.

Remember to make the most of your membership and follow us on Facebook and Twitter @Educate_Plus.

I look forward to welcoming you to our upcoming events as our QLD chapter continues going from strength-to-strength and “a rising tide lifts all boats” (JFK) so jump on board!

Review of PD – How to shoot video using your mobile

Review of PD – How to shoot video using your mobile

Thanks to Geoff Anderson from Sonic Sight who presented an excellent PD about using video in the school setting. With over 500 billion videos watched on You Tube every day around the world, we need to keep up and take a strategic approach to video content for our institution.

One of the main takeaways of the day was to always shoot landscape as this is how we view content best on the plethora of screens we use daily.

And why would we use a phone for video? Because “the best camera you have is the one you have now!” Such excellent advice.

There were many other gems regarding audio and lighting, effectively presenting our messages, editing and more. The attendees enjoyed ‘playing’ with some of the latest cameras and technology available, and appreciated the opportunity to practise what we were learning during the session.

I enjoyed this PD so much that upon return to my campus, I went to the sports hall and videoed the teacher versus student volleyball game – landscape of course – added music, used newfound techniques including slow motion and text, and had it uploaded to our Facebook page before the final bell. For the marketers out there, this post had excellent community engagement and reach!

Video works. And thanks to this Educate Plus PD, my video now works better.

Regional Colleagues Welcomed at Professional Development Days in Townsville and Bundaberg

Regional Colleagues Welcomed at Professional Development Days in Townsville and Bundaberg

EducatePlus CEO Neil McWhannell joined Chapter Committee members, Lea Walker-Franks, Sue Russell and Claire Grlj in Townsville on Monday 18 March for a day of learning and networking with regional colleagues.  Attendees also travelled from Cairns and Charters Towers.  For our Townsville attendees, the day was a welcome relief from the flood recovery efforts which had affected many of the schools in the region.

On Monday 30 April, EducatePlus were warmly welcomed by Shalom College Bundaberg.  Chapter Committee members, Lea Walker-Franks, Helen Turner, Lara Pickering and John Collins presented sessions and hosted Special Interest Groups for Fraser Coast region colleges.

Feedback from attendees on both days reflected the EducatePlus benefits enjoyed by all members with attendees saying they thoroughly enjoyed the connection, open sharing of knowledge, networking and learning from their peers.  Both groups expressed their gratitude to the teams for spending the day in their region.

With the Queensland Chapter Conference coming up in September, we currently have 34 delegates from 12 regional schools attending which account for nearly one third of registrations.  We’ll be welcoming delegates from Charters Towers, Townsville, Toowoomba, Sunshine Coast, Fraser Coast, Hervey Bay and the Gold Coast with more regional registrations expected in the lead up the conference.
