{"id":1089,"date":"2022-11-16T14:29:04","date_gmt":"2022-11-16T03:29:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebuzz.net.au\/educateplus-nz\/?post_type=article&#038;p=1089"},"modified":"2022-11-16T14:29:04","modified_gmt":"2022-11-16T03:29:04","slug":"small-wins-big-progress-10","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.thebuzz.net.au\/educateplus-nz\/article\/small-wins-big-progress-10\/","title":{"rendered":"Small Wins, Big Progress"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Student Volunteers Cook up a Storm at Ronald McDonald House<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A placement on a paediatric ward inspired an Otago Physiotherapy student to lead a volunteer effort at Ronald McDonald House.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth year student Lily Montgomery worked closely with the families of paediatric patients at Christchurch Hospital and witnessed the stress they were under.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe families go through so much and the last thing they want to worry about is figuring out what\u2019s for dinner,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Lily wanted to make a practical difference so organised a team of fellow Year 4 Physiotherapy students as kitchen volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>The nine-strong group took their cooking skills to go into Ronald McDonald House, the \u2018home-away-from-home\u2019 for families who travel to Christchurch for their child\u2019s medical treatment, where they prepared hot evening meals for children and their wh\u0101nau.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like that by volunteering at RMDH you can directly give back to the families. We got a chance to meet some of the families and saw first-hand how much of an impact just a couple of hours of our time can make.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was such a rewarding experience and it was fun to do the cooking alongside my peers.
