A recruitment event held at the Otago Business School recently was also an opportunity to announce two new scholarships for finance and accounting students.

On Wednesday 3 August KPMG and the Otago Business School hosted the session, where accounting and finance students could engage and learn from current pioneers in the industry, and the scholarships were announced.

KPMG Partner (Tax), Nick Hope, spoke at the August 3 session alongside other representatives from the firm before a social pizza session in the School’s atrium.

Mr Hope also announced two new scholarships from KPMG available to Department of Accountancy and Finance students.

“These scholarships will be awarded annually and are called ‘Fulfilling New Zealand’s prosperity’ to encourage students to step into the great potential they have for the future,” Mr Hope says.

“The prizes will be awarded on the recommendation of the School’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Robin Gauld, and after consultation with the Head of the Department of Accountancy and Finance.

“The first scholarship will be for the top student in the Financial Statement Analysis (ACCT 310) class and the second prize will be awarded to a third-year student who has undertaken extra community service alongside their academic excellence in accounting.”

The value of the prizes will normally be $1,000 and, separate to the monetary award, KPMG will fast track an interview or assessment day for each prize recipient.

How To Be A Leader No Matter What Your Role Is

There are certain roles that automatically lend themselves to leadership. For example, if you’re a manager responsible for supervising a team of 10, you can bet that there are going to be opportunities within your role to showcase your leadership skills (duh!).

But you don’t have to be in a managerial role to step up and show your leadership potential.

There are plenty of ways to be a leader at every stage of your career—no matter what your role, title, or job responsibilities might be.

But how, exactly, do you do that? Let’s take a look at how to be a leader—whatever your role might be.

Howick College honours alumni at the inaugural Distinguished Alumni Awards

Article from Times Online

Entrepreneur Tex Edwards and doctors Angela Lim and Helen Murray were recently honoured at the inaugural annual Howick College Distinguished Alumni Awards.

The awards were established as an opportunity to celebrate the college’s outstanding alumni and their impressive achievements since graduation.

Recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award, Tex Edwards, never thought of himself as academic and never imagined he would be honoured by his old high school.

With more than 30 years’ experience in international banking, investment management and infrastructure deployment, he is perhaps best known as founder of the mobile phone company 2degrees – and subsequently ending the telecommunications duopoly in New Zealand.

“I was proud to serve the New Zealand community…thank you [Howick College] for honouring me and the team I worked with,” he said.

Edwards says he learned the importance of building strong networks while at Howick College. Being able to connect with peers of similar interests and fit in with new groups has served him well over the years…

Miles Stratford, presiding member of the Howick College Board, said it was a privilege to bestow these awards on students who had gone on to achieve at the highest level.

“The whakapapa of the college and our alumni are intertwined. By strengthening the ties between us, we hope our current and future students will be inspired and have the courage to excel.”

Kiwis feature at International Educate Plus Conference

Kiwis feature at International Educate Plus Conference

We are delighted to announce that Educate Plus New Zealand members and institutions were recognised at the recent International Conference Excellence Awards Lunch.

In an organisation of almost 2000 members across Australasia, it was wonderful to hear that two of the Excellence Awards were awarded to our fabulous and dedicated Chapter members;

  • Carolyn Prebble – Volunteer Leadership Award
  • Kate Eatts – Newcomer Award

Carolyn Prebble
We don’t need to tell any of you how deserving Carolyn is of the Volunteer Leadership Award. Carolyn is, and has for the past three decades, been the glue that holds our Chapter together. A true leader who insists on not bearing any of the leadership titles but is deserving of all of them. There is nobody more generous with their time and more committed to the Educate Plus cause and our members.

Carolyn is also a past recipient of the Trevor Wigney Award, one of only two New Zealanders to receive this prestigious award. This year’s recipient was John Phillips of Brighton Grammar School in Melbourne.

Kate Eatts
Those of us who have been fortunate to work closely with Kate will appreciate that she is a truly worthy recipient of the Newcomer Award. Kate has served a year as NZ Chapter Manager, going above and beyond as a member by organising networking breakfasts and presentations. She has led alumni, fundraising and communications projects at Diocesan School for Girls and recently won a promotion to Development and Community Relations Manager, which is testament to her hard work and commitment. Kate’s trademark kind, helpful, capable, positive and enthusiastic approach is raved about by members and partners alike.

Special Mention
Our very own Member institution, University of Otago received a Special Mention for their submission in the Annual Giving/Fundraising Campaign Award category.

Fellowships
Educate Plus Fellowships recognising long standing service to the advancement sector were awarded to New Zealand members:

  • Angela Coe, Diocesan School for Girls
  • Jennifer Roshan, Howick College

Jennifer Roshan
Jennifer is uniquely experienced – not only has she served our Chapter as Chapter administrator, she is the only member, to our knowledge, who has held advancement roles across all three sectors i.e tertiary (AUT), state-integrated (Sacred Heart College) and state school (Howick College)

Angela Coe
Angela is also exceptionally unique in that she has served in education as an educator, a Board Chair, a Foundation Board member and a Director of Development in both the state school sector (Auckland Boys Grammar) and at her school, Diocesan School for Girls. Angela has been hugely supportive of our Chapter and we are very grateful for her wisdom, guidance and unconditional support.

Recognition
Alongside recently retired, long serving Committee members, all four women will be acknowledged at the NZ Chapter Conference in September and Jennifer and Carolyn will be presented with their awards by CEO, Mandy McFarland.

Congratulations!

It was an outstanding four days of high level and varied program content, an insane amount of networking after not having been together for so long and an opportunity to meet with 150 exhibitors and partners who are supporting Educate Plus and our industry.

Innovation, creativity and inspiration merged together and the energy was palpable!

Huge thanks to Wes at Tolhurst Creative for capturing the Conference vibe in stills and video.

Building great donor relationships that last – Playing the long game

Building great donor relationships that last – Playing the long game

Donor retention remains the biggest challenge fundraisers face, and donor acquisition remains a herculean task as we unpack and unpick generational and demographic preferences and tendencies, as well as the decreasing numbers of giving households. The bigger picture should lead us to a few logical conclusions at a time when charitable and fundraising leaders must ponder how to best respond to the noise all around them.

Article from NZ Chapter Silver Partner Giving Architects

Many organisations have had very good fundraising outcomes in the past two years. This included organisations that found themselves at the frontline of communities impacted by the pandemic.  Many organisations who simply continued to communicate very effectively about the unmet needs they served and the positive impact they were having also experienced very good giving outcomes.

However, there are early signs that the recent rate of giving growth, the ‘Covid giving surge’, has slowed.  Drawing from this trend should encourage for-purpose organisational leadership to focus on effectively resourcing the hard work that is required to achieve donor retention. This may be helped when most (not all) realise that when they have had a surge in giving, it’s often come from donors they already knew.

So how might you achieve great donor retention with donors who have already shown you that they care about what you are doing?
