NZ Chapter eNews November 2020 - 19 November

President’s message

Kia ora,

Hope you are well in your respective institutions at this very busy time of the year as you celebrate successes and achievements at various events, whether they be graduation ceremony, prize-giving, awards dinner or donor functions, as well as looking ahead and start planning for 2021.

As we move rapidly towards the end of the academic year, we are also approaching our Annual General Meeting for Educate Plus New Zealand Chapter.

This year, the AGM will be held in Christchurch on Friday 20 November, 4.30pm. We warmly welcome all those nearby to join us at 3.00pm at the UC Arts City Location (Old Chemistry) for a private tour and enjoy the newly opened exhibition ‘MYTHS AND MORTALS: Life in Ancient Times’ at the Teece Museum of Classical Antiquities prior to the AGM. Following the AGM, we will then have a networking get together over a drink or two and have a panel discussion reflecting on ‘Year 2020 – What have we learnt? What will we retain? And what is going to change?’ (This event is free to attend. Welcome drink and nibbles will be provided)

For those members who aren’t able to join us in person, please participate in the New Zealand Chapter’s AGM as we welcome your nominations for committee, votes by proxy, and any items you wish to bring up for general business.

Carolyn Prebble – Celebrating 29 years at King’s School, Auckland

On behalf of the New Zealand Chapter Executive Committee and all New Zealand Chapter members, both past and present, it is a privilege to congratulate Carolyn Prebble on the closing of a tremendous tenure at King’s School.

Carolyn’s commitment and significant contribution at King’s School cannot be summarised easily but she has quietly shared with me the headline which is … ‘29 years, 4 Headmasters, and many millions of dollars raised for the school.

Carolyn was one of the founding committee members of ADAPE New Zealand Chapter and has played a critical role in the organisation of the two New Zealand-hosted International Conferences in 2006 and 2018, plus numerous Chapter Conferences over the years.

Carolyn was the recipient of the Trevor Wigney Award in 2014 – the most prestigious recognition awarded by Educate Plus. A true testament and acknowledgement of Carolyn’s significant and selfless contribution to Educate Plus and the entire sector. Even though she is retiring from her role at King’s School, Carolyn will continue to be involved with Educate Plus in providing guidance for our members and looking after our ever-growing membership in New Zealand.

What an outstanding achievement and legacy Carolyn has left behind! During Carolyn’s time at King’s School, she has generously shared her knowledge and experience with so many of us new and maturing practitioners. I remember my first Educate Plus Conference (ADAPE as it was back then) in Auckland in 2006, like so many new members to Educate Plus, she made me feel so incredibly welcomed and I immediately felt part of the ‘family’. Thank you Carolyn for supporting our committees and our members through your phone calls, emails and supportive and encouraging conversations. I congratulate you on the conclusion of a stellar chapter and for leading the way here in New Zealand in the world of Advancement. Thank you for all that you have done to support us all while you have been at King’s School, Auckland.

President, New Zealand Chapter

Kirstyn Mawdsley is now Kirstyn Sandall

We would like to congratulate Kirstyn, our Chapter Treasurer, and Director of Marketing & Development at John McGlashan College, who had a birthday celebration a few months ago which turned out to be a surprise wedding – an intimate ceremony with close friends and family. Kirstyn is now Kirstyn Sandall.

Welcome to our New Zealand Chapter Manager – Kate Eatts

The New Zealand Chapter Committee is delighted to announce the appointment of Kate Eatts as our Chapter Manager. Originally from Australia, Kate currently works part-time as the Development Administrator at Diocesan School for Girls in Auckland. In her role as the New Zealand Chapter Manager for Educate Plus, she will be providing assistance to the Chapter Committee.

Auckland Members Celebrate Return to Level 4

It was more good luck than good management that saw more than 20 members from all over the Auckland region gather at Diocesan School for Girls on the first morning of Auckland’s return to Level 4 on Thursday 8th October, for a delicious breakfast, natter and chatter over coffee. After eight long months and lots of zoom gatherings, all present felt very grateful to finally be able to see their Educate Plus friends and colleagues again.

The morning was kindly hosted by Angela Coe and the team at DIO and included a particularly insightful and practical presentation by the DIO team who shared their ‘applied projects and practices’ all initiated as a result of the Educate Plus training they’ve enjoyed over the past several months.

We learned about their Charidy-based Annual Appeal (for Covid-affected students); DIO’s newly-established and rapidly-growing LinkedIn group; the functional, value-add online tools, YouTour and NoticeMatch; and DIO’s revised donor stewardship practices adopted during the first lockdown with a focus more on communication and contact than ‘donor moves management’.

The special morning was capped off by a tour of the incredible, recently opened, Dio Arts Centre. We suspect that performing artists throughout Auckland will be clambering to get onto the stage and into the practice studios and concert chambers featured in this superb addition to the Dio campus.

Our heartfelt thanks to Team DIO – Angela, Kate, Aly and Dennis for their considered preparation and generous hospitality. We all had a great morning!

New Zealand and Australia Universities’ Continued Investment in Fundraising Reaps High Returns

Total New Funds Secured Grew From 2018 to 2019, With Median Value AUD8.3 Million

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education released findings from an annual survey measuring philanthropic impact on the higher education sector, based on data from 33 universities in Australia and New Zealand, the highest participation rate in eight years since the survey began. This increase in participation amounted to a rise in philanthropic funds secured, peaking at AUD783 million. The CASE Support of Education Survey, Australia and New Zealand shows new funds secured grew by 15 percent from 2018 to 2019, with a median value AUD8.3 million, while cash income which typically corresponds to and follows the new funds secured, grew by 11 percent from 2018 to 2019 with a median value of AUD8.1 million.

Other key findings from the 2019 survey data include:

  • 101 cash gifts of AUD1 million and above were received by 23 institutions in 2019, with more than half of these received by just four institutions. For a consistent cohort of 30 institutions[1], the cash gifts of AUD1 million and above showed an increase of 20 percent over 2018 figures.
  • New bequest intentions confirmed increased 36 percent1 from 2018 to 2019, up from a 28 percent decrease during 2017 to 2018. Go8e and non-Go8 institutions saw increases of 37 percent and 34 percent respectively.
  • Production and distribution costs of an alumni magazine saw a reduction of 8 percent from 2018 to 2019, following a 13 percent decrease from 2017 to 2018.
  • While the number of contactable alumni has grown by 11 percent from 2017 to 2019, alumni donors are on an overall downward trend with a decrease of 16 percent during the same time period.

Christmas gifts and koha needed? Make the Chooice to go New Zealand made!

Christmas gifts and koha needed? Make the Chooice to go New Zealand made!

As much as we try to ignore it, that pre-Christmas vibe is definitely in the air! The supermarkets seem to roll out the Christmas decorations and those unavoidable carols earlier and earlier every year!

If you need to source some unique gifts and supporting small artisan Kiwi businesses appeals to your community conscience, look no further than the Chooice (with two o’s) website and Facebook page for a huge range of quality, New Zealand made products and services… from artworks to jewellery. Christmas decorations, toys, photography, food items, skincare and beauty products, pet accessories products, cooking and homewares, plants and gardening, candles, linen, office and school supplies … you name it, you’ll find a suitable choice for your donors, colleagues, family and friends at Chooice!

Chooice (initially set up as the Buy New Zealand Made Facebook page) was a Lockdown initiative set up by enterprising Wellingtonian Sarah Colcord who wanted to help talented Kiwis who, with the closure of their local markets, had suffered potentially catastrophic declines in sales.

And so, the Buy New Zealand Made (now known as “Chooice”) Facebook page was born. And New Zealanders came out in force to enrol their products and services and support fellow Kiwi artisans and business owners. With 1,434 retailers and 544,000 members, Chooice has quickly grown to be one of the largest shopping malls in the country, and created and saved thousands of livelihoods along the way!

Happy shopping! Hope you get a few Chooice prezzies!
