Wellington Networking Breakfast

Some 20 of our Wellington based Educate Plus members had a wonderful breakfast meeting on the 25 March. Generously hosted by our Queen Margaret College colleagues, the networking event was a great way to connect with fellow advancement colleagues from other institutions being the first get together of the year in the region. Those who attended had lock down stories to share and exciting events planned ahead for in their schools and universities.

Otago Regional Networking event

The Otago Chapter was delighted to meet on a wet and windy morning for coffee. Participants included Educate Plus members from the University of Otago, John McGlashan College and Saint Hilda’s Collegiate School and guests from the Canon Foundation and the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra.

It was a fantastic morning to swap fundraising stories and exchanges ideas and learn from best practice. NZ Committee Members Graeme Mullin, Shelagh Murray and Kirstyn Sandall welcomed the group to the Otago Business School.

A Word with our Chapter Partners

A Word with our Chapter Partners

We pioneered executive search in the not-for-profit sector, taking the best of commercial headhunting and turning it into the right process needed for the sector. Many others have followed us but 30 years later that same honest and open approach we started tells us the not-for-profit sector appreciates and trusts us.

Our knowledge and experience gives us an in-depth understanding of the issues faced by our clients across the not-for-profit sector. We have consistently helped our clients with a clear definition of the role and translating expectations of success into meaningful selection criteria. Our approach to research and identification of candidates is creative and thorough and our consultants contact candidates personally, and with discretion.

“ We have used Execucare to manage the global recruitment activities for major gift fundraisers and other specialist alumni and development roles. They have consistently attracted high quality fields from which we were able to fill positions with exceptional candidates. I have no reservation in recommending their services to other organisations looking for high quality alumni and development staff. ”

Mark Bentley, Director Alumni Relations & Development, University of Auckland

Bend Before You Break: The Secret of Great Leaders Everywhere

Servant leadership. Coaching. Transformational. Democratic. Bureaucratic. Becoming a manager is as much about discovering your style of leadership as it is learning to oversee people’s workloads and guiding a team towards a shared goal.

You might even like to cultivate a reputation as one type of leader or another. Being known for a particular style can attract people to want to work with you, or give you recognition with the C-suite.

However, there is a problem with settling down one managerial path and honing your style with a single-minded focus. You lose out on the power of flexibility. Flexible leaders are able to change their style or approach strategically and with relative comfort in order to meet challenges or unpredictable circumstances.

What Flexible Leadership Looks Like Today

Given the world we now work in, flexible leadership might just be the key to not just surviving, but thriving as a people manager for the long-term.

With the global shift to remote work, we are currently witnessing some of the most impactful examples of flexible leadership at scale. Companies like AtlassianSalesforceSpotify and so many more are instituting permanent changes to their work location policies as a result of widespread remote work. Teams have learned to execute on projects and collaborate in the midst of children joining Zoom calls, people taking unexpected days off, or power or internet outages causing major disruptions.

How and Why Leaders Should Priortise Wellness Within Their Remote Teams

What if you discovered that your remote employees are likely feeling more isolated, stressed, anxious, and emotionally drained than ever before?

According to a global study across more than 10 industries by Qualtrics and SAP during the spring of 2020, 75% of people said they feel more socially isolated, 67% of people reported higher stress, 57% are feeling greater anxiety, and 53% say they feel more emotionally exhausted.

While it’s not the most chipper of statistics and hopefully isn’t the case for your team—it’s certainly the truth for many since the outbreak of the pandemic. Now that we’re a full year into the pandemic with many never having returned to the office, these percentages have likely increased even more.

In past years, companies have often separated work and topics surrounding mental health, claiming those areas were too personal or even ‘taboo’ to discuss with direct reports. However, work is where people spend most of their time (yes, even when remote) and has a huge impact on their mental, physical, and emotional wellness. Throw a global pandemic, sudden transitions to distributed work, and global political turmoil into the mix, and it’s easy to understand why employees need extra support—especially from their leadership teams.

Margaret Hudson, Director of Advancement, Liston College

Margaret was appointed Director of Advancement at Liston College in April 2019, a newly established office to engage with the wider Liston community, develop relationships, network and generate income streams to provide for the unmet needs of current and future students. Margaret’s previous roles overseas with Youth With A Mission and the Leprosy Mission, followed by serving as a Community Development & Funding Advisor for the Department of Internal Affairs, Fundraising Manager for Hospice West Auckland and Grants Manager for The Trusts Community Foundation, have provided invaluable training and experience for developing the infrastructure necessary for this venture.

Priorities over the past two years have been to locate Liston Old Boys via LinkedIn and Facebook, create a database/engagement website hosted by Potentiality which went live in March 2020, and to launch the Liston College Foundation Fund (LCFF) in July 2020, managed by Auckland Foundation. With lockdown restrictions now eased, the emphasis is on meeting Old Boys one-on-one, seeking their advice on more effective engagement, together with strategies for developing a culture of giving to provide opportunities for future generations of students. As Liston College will also celebrate its 50th Jubilee at Queen’s Birthday Weekend 2024, Margaret has plenty of projects to occupy her over the coming years – and she is loving it!

Margaret with the Liston College Prefects was taken at the Cocktail Party to launch the Liston College Foundation Fund. The Prefects were invaluable welcoming guests and serving as waiters throughout the evening.

7 Simple Steps to Create Better Boundaries When You Work From Home

March 22, 2021

The challenges of working remotely have shown a discordance of balancing everyday life with managing job responsibilities under the same roof.

Many of us working from home are also fulfilling the roles of caregivers and educators at the same time as managing our work responsibilities. According to Gwen Moran in an article for Fast Company, relearning how to set boundaries will help you have a better sense of separation and compartmentalization in your life.

Here are a few simple steps you can take that may help you find some boundaries again:

  1. Take care of yourself first. Before anything else, think about who you are, writes Moran. Are you a person who likes to be busy or someone looking for more work-life-balance? Knowing yourself helps you set the stage for setting boundaries.
  2. Set clear expectations. You need to understand your surroundings, work environment, and culture in order to set your boundaries and keep them. If your work has expectations, consider those before you set boundaries that oppose them, explains Moran.
  3. Focus on the outcomes. Communicate to your manager or supervisor how much you can deliver in one day and at what time according to your personal demands at home. Focusing on what you do, not how long you do it, is an important way to manage an overwhelming workload.
